There is some evidence that seed traits can affect the long-term persistence of seeds in the soil. However, findings on this topic have differed between systems. Here, we brought together a worldwide database of seed persistence data for 1474 species to test the generality of seed mass–shape–persistence relationships. We found a significant trend for low seed persistence to be associated with larger and less spherical seeds. However, the relationship varied across different clades, growth forms and species ecological preferences. Specifically, relationships of seed mass–shape–persistence were more pronounced in Poales than in other order clades. Herbaceous species that tend to be found in sites with low soil sand content and precipitation have stronger relationships between seed shape and persistence than in sites with higher soil sand content and precipitation. For the woody plants, the relationship between persistence and seed morphology was stronger in sites with high soil sand content and low precipitation than in sites with low soil sand content and higher precipitation. Improving the ability to predict the soil seed bank formation process, including burial and persistence, could benefit the utilization of seed morphology–persistence relationships in management strategies for vegetation restoration and controlling species invasion across diverse vegetation types and environments. Previous studies indicated that grazing can cause significant changes in abiotic and biotic environment in grassland. However, how these changes impact germination trait selection in grassland has not been well studied. Thus, we aimed to explore whether grazing can significantly change germination trait diversity and composition of grasslands community. We measured the germination traits of species in the laboratory, and compared their performance in grazed and nongrazed grasslands. Then, we compared the community-weighted means of germination traits and functional diversity of grazed and nongrazed grasslands based on these germination traits to know whether grazed and nongrazed grasslands differed in their germination trait structures. At the species level, we found that the changes of abundance in grazed and nongrazed grasslands were not related to species' germination traits. However, at the community level, compared with nongrazed grasslands, species in the grazed grasslands generally exhibited a higher seed germination percentage. Moreover, seed germination response in grazed grasslands was more positively related to alternating temperature than in nongrazed grasslands, and breadth of the germination temperature niche was narrower in grazed than in nongrazed grasslands. Compared with nongrazed grasslands, seed germination trait diversity was increased and germination trait evenness decreased in grazed grasslands. Grazing can change microhabitat conditions, thereby changing germination trait selection by environmental filtering, resulting in a significant difference in germinate trait composition at the community level. Quantifying intraspecific trait variation (ITV) is crucial for understanding species local adaptation and regional distribution. Intraspecific seed mass variation (ITVsm) is expected to vary with environmental gradients or co-vary with related biotic attributes, but these relationships are not well known in a multispecies space. We performed interspecific and phylogenetic analyses to evaluate the relative power of three species biotic attributes and four niche breadth traits in explaining ITVsm variation for 434 eastern Qinghai–Tibetan species. We showed a positive relationship between species' ITVsm and their niche breadth in the light, moisture and disturbance dimensions, supporting the idea that high ITV allows species to match their traits to different habitat conditions and thus to distribute in a wide range of environments. However, we did find significant direct effect of species' thermal niche on individual seed mass variation. Meanwhile, we showed significant effects of seed dispersal mode, but not of life form and pollination type, on ITVsm. This suggests that the covariation or co-evolution between seed and disperser was related to the pattern and magnitude of ITVsm, but not to plant lifespan, the quality and allocation pattern of available resources and the availability of pollination vector. Lastly, all multivariate models showed a significant combined contribution of species' biotic attributes and niche breadth to their ITVsm, implying that intrinsic biotic limitations and extrinsic abiotic pressures may operate simultaneously in controlling regional-scale intraspecific seed development. Summary: Assumptions about the germination ecology of alpine plants are presently based on individual species and local studies. A current challenge is to synthesise, at the global level, the alpine seed ecological spectrum.We performed a meta‐analysis of primary data from laboratory experiments conducted across four continents (excluding the tropics) and 661 species, to estimate the influence of six environmental cues on germination proportion, mean germination time and germination synchrony; accounting for seed morphology (mass, embryo : seed ratio) and phylogeny.Most alpine plants show physiological seed dormancy, a strong need for cold stratification, warm‐cued germination and positive germination responses to light and alternating temperatures. Species restricted to the alpine belt have a higher preference for warm temperatures and a stronger response to cold stratification than species whose distribution extends also below the treeline. Seed mass, embryo size and phylogeny have strong constraining effects on germination responses to the environment.Globally, overwintering and warm temperatures are key drivers of germination in alpine habitats. The interplay between germination physiology and seed morphological traits further reflects pressures to avoid frost or drought stress. Seeds are the colonizing propagules for many plants and may therefore contribute to the filtering of species during the process of colonization and community assembly. Environmental filtering of seed traits may occur among species and influence community composition, or within species and influence the environmental breadth that a given species inhabits. To test for evidence of such filtering of seed traits, we measured morphological and germination traits of seeds of 408 angiosperm species collected across an elevational gradient in the eastern Tibetan Plateau grasslands. We tested for elevational filtering of traits at the species level, as well as within 22 of those species that occurred at different elevations, in order to test whether within‐species variation reflected among‐species patterns. Elevational patterning occurred in both seed morphology and seed germination. Seeds were smaller, more elongated and had a higher surface area:volume ratio and shorter germination times at higher elevation. Seed morphology was associated with germination such that more elongated and smaller seeds with a higher surface area:volume ratio germinated faster, leading to earlier germination in seeds from high elevation. Within species, elevational variation in seed traits was observed in several species, but species differed in how those traits were distributed across elevation. These results suggest that taxonomic differences in seed traits may contribute to elevational variation in the species composition of plant communities, but that seed traits may be variably selected by elevation within species. Smaller seeds might encounter more severe selective pressure than larger ones because they have fewer food reserves and are more easily buried; thus, seed mass can be considered to be directly related to the effect of light on germination. To investigate the effect of light on seed germination and associated seed mass variation within a whole plant community, we compiled germination data for common herbaceous species from an alpine meadow on the eastern Qinghai- Tibet plateau. The results showed the following. (i) Light had a general positive effect on seed germination. Under light, the proportion of species with lower germinability was decreased, mean germination percentage was increased by 20% and the speed of germination was doubled. (ii) Irrespective of light environment, species with medium-sized seeds (seed mass ranging from 0.11 to 0.5 mg) had higher germination percentage and speed when compared with species within the largest seed mass group. (iii) The germination of smaller-seeded species was more dependent on light stimulation than larger-seeded ones. In darkness, the species within the smallest seed mass group had the lowest percentage and speed of germination; however, under light, the species within the largest seed mass group had the lowest percentage and speed of germination. Our results suggested that the germination characteristics and especially seeds' response to light among species in the alpine meadow might be an adaptation to natural selective pressure. 1. Many plants disperse their seeds in waterbodies via hydrochoric transport. Despite a growing body of research into hydrochory, little is known about the fundamental seed traits that determine floatation ability or hydrochoric transport behaviour more generally. Seeds are transported in fluvial systems in one of three phases: surface transport, within the flow or incorporated in bedload. Seeds are often categorised as buoyant or non-buoyant based on density, with little consideration of the morphological traits that determine how long seeds spend in each transport phase. 2. We investigated the seed traits that best predict time spent floating under laboratory conditions, using sixty species of riparian plants from south-eastern Australia. We measured and calculated key physical attributes (length, width, volume, surface area, mass, density, sphericity, roundness and shape category) and categorised seeds according to their primary dispersal modes (water/wind, vertebrate, adhesion, ants and unassisted). 3. We used Cox's proportional hazards modelling to reveal that seed density and volume : surface area ratio were the physical traits that best predicted time spent floating. Volume : surface area ratio represents both seed size and shape, as it increases with size and sphericity. Coir results showed that denser, larger and/or more spherical seeds (i.e. higher volume : surface area ratio) were poor floaters. They are therefore more likely to be transported in subsurface flow or as bedload. 4. We combined our data with geomorphic models of sediment transport in flow to develop a biophysical process model of how hydrological forces and seed physical traits determine hydrochorous seed transport behaviour in rivers. The model describes how surface tension, buoyancy and flow velocity act on seed density and volume : surface area ratio to characterise time spent floating. We extrapolate from our data to conceptualise how these traits predict transitions between surface, subsurface and bedload transport. Hydrochoric seed transport behaviour and deposition are both threshold-driven and multidirectional. 5. Coir process model is likely to be applicable across a range of different seed types in a range of rivers. It substantially increases our understanding of hydrochoric processes in rivers, lakes and lotic wetlands and will help illuminate the links between seed traits, hydrochoric transport and patterns of riparian vegetation and species composition.
