6. Cultivating Self-Control in FinTech: Evidence from a Field Experiment on Online Consumer Borrowing.

Abstract

We report the results of a longitudinal intervention with students across 5 universities in China designed to reduce online consumer debt. We allocate participants to either a financial literacy treatment group, a self-control treatment group, or a zero-touch control group. Our self-control training intervention features detailed tracking of spending and borrowing, budgeting, and introspection about consumption choices. This intervention reduces online borrowing and delinquency charges, mainly driven by a reduction in entertainment-related spending and borrowing. In contrast, financial literacy interventions improve test scores but only marginally affect borrowing. Our results suggest that cultivating self-regulation and budgeting skills can improve borrowing behavior on e-commerce platforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We study risk taking in a panel of subjects in Wuhan, China - before, during the COVID-19 crisis, and after the country reopened. Subjects in our sample traveled for semester break in January, generating variation in exposure to the virus and quarantine in Wuhan. Higher exposure leads subjects to reduce planned risk taking, risky investments, and optimism. Our findings help unify existing studies by showing that aggregate shocks affect general preferences for risk and economic expectations, while heterogeneity in experience further affect risk taking through beliefs about individuals’ own outcomes such as luck and sense of control. Abstract

Our research design allocates individuals to either a financial literacy treatment, a self-control training program, or a zero-touch control group. Financial education interventions improve test scores on general financial literacy but only marginally affect future online borrowing. Our self-control treatment features detailed tracking of spending and borrowing activity with a third-party app and introspection about individuals' consumption with a counselor. These sessions reduce future online borrowing, delinquency charges, and borrowing for entertainment reasons - and are driven by the male subjects in the sample. Our results suggest that self-regulation can affect financial behavior in e-commerce platforms.

Abstract

We examine whether the choice of cash flow disclosure under International Accounting Standard 7 has an influence on the cost of capital incurred by Australian listed companies. Results indicate that indirect method companies incur a significantly higher ex‐ante cost of equity than direct method companies using a combined equity model approach. We also demonstrate that using an optimal weighted combination of equity models reduces model variance and bias compared to using a single equity model. Our findings support mandating the direct method and have the potential to induce companies to report the direct method to increase company value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. A hybrid information approach to predicting corporate credit risk

Abstract

This article proposes a hybrid information approach to predict corporate credit risk. In contrast to the previous literature that debates which credit risk model is the best, we pool information from a diverse set of structural and reduced-form models to produce a model combination based credit risk prediction. Compared with each single model, the pooled strategies yield consistently lower average risk prediction errors over time. We also find that while the reduced-form models contribute more in the pooled strategies for speculative grade names and longer maturities, the structural models have higher weights for shorter maturities and investment grade names.
