Abstract: Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

10. Disturbance reduces the moss‐dominated biocrust inhibition on infiltration and improves soil moisture storage within the Loess Plateau, China.

Abstract: Various factors influence biocrust effects on infiltration and soil moisture. On China's Loess Plateau, well‐developed moss‐dominated biocrusts reduce infiltration and suppress shrub growth, however, the interrelationships between rainfall conditions and disturbance management to alleviate these impacts are unknown. In a semiarid watershed on the Loess Plateau, we applied two forms of disturbance, scarification (controlled harrowing) and compaction (simulated grazing), at four intensity levels (control‐intact, light, moderate, and heavy) to well‐developed moss‐dominated biocrusts and a bare soil (BS) for comparisons to form eight treatments with three replications. Rainfall intensity and depth, soil moisture, run‐off, and sediment yield were measured during the rainy season (July–October). In total, well‐developed biocrusts did not significantly affect infiltration but reduced soil moisture at depths of 120–180 cm (p < 0.05), and disturbance increased infiltration and deep soil moisture beneath biocrusts (p < 0.05). Rainfall conditions changed the effects of biocrusts and disturbance. Under long, low‐intensity rainfall, moss‐dominated biocrust infiltration was slightly greater than BS, but scarification increased infiltration and compaction reduced it (p < 0.001). Under short, high‐intensity rainfall, biocrusts reduced infiltration, and disturbance intensity increased infiltration and sediment yields (p < 0.001). Light grazing or using light or moderate scarification improves well‐developed moss‐dominated biocrust infiltration in the pastures during May–June before the rainy season during July–October on the Loess Plateau, while avoiding increased soil erosion. 11. Lichen biocrusts contribute to soil microbial biomass carbon in the northern temperate zone: A meta‐analysis.

Abstract: Biological soil crusts (biocrusts) have crucial ecological functions in dryland ecosystems, yet understanding the variations in soil microbial biomass within biocrusts across diverse ecosystems, climates and soil conditions remains limited. This knowledge gap constrains our understanding of how microbial communities within biocrusts regulate terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycling. Hence, we conducted a meta‐analysis using 255 paired observations from 42 study sites across the northern temperate ecosystem. The analysis revealed that biocrusts harbour significantly higher soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen (SMBC and SMBN, respectively) levels than bare (non‐biocrust) soil across all habitat types. Notably, deeper soil layers (5–10 and >10 cm) accumulated less SMBC and SMBN than biocrust and biocrust–5‐cm soil, revealing that biocrusts influence shallow soil environments. Ecosystem type, soil texture, depth and season emerged as key factors influencing the distribution of SMBC within biocrusts. Of particular interest, lichen biocrusts accumulated the most SMBC compared with other biocrust types. Furthermore, the difference in SMBC between biocrust and non‐biocrust soils was more pronounced in oligotrophic habitats (e.g., desert, grassland, sand and sandy loam soils) than in eutrophic habitats (e.g., forest and loam soils). Random forest analysis confirmed that soil variables affected SMBC accumulation in biocrusts more than climatic factors. Soil organic carbon (SOC), as the primary source of SMBC, could be the most important determinant. Moreover, the disparity between non‐biocrust SMBC and biocrust SMBC increased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) or decreasing altitude. These insights underscore the substantial contribution of lichen biocrusts to SMBC and emphasize the need to incorporate this knowledge into regional models for predicting the effects of climate change on soil carbon budgets within biocrust microbiomes in temperate ecosystems of the Northern Hemisphere. Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Abstract: The estimation of fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is important for identifying and monitoring desertification, especially in arid and semiarid regions. By using regression and pixel dichotomy models, we present the comparison of Sentinel-2A (S2) multispectral instrument (MSI) and Landsat 8 (L8) operational land imager (OLI) data regarding the retrieval of FVC in a semi-arid sandy area (Mu Us Sandland, China, in August 2016). A combination of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) high-spatial-resolution images and field plots were used to produce verified data. Based on a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) regression model, the results showed that, compared with that of L8, the coefficient of determination (R2) of S2 increased by 26.0%, and the root mean square error (RMSE) and the sum of absolute error (SAE) decreased by 3.0% and 11.4%, respectively. For the ratio vegetation index (RVI) regression model, compared with that of L8, the R2 of S2 increased by 26.0%, and the RMSE and SAE decreased by 8.0% and 20.0%, respectively. When the pixel dichotomy model was used, compared with that of L8, the RMSE of S2 decreased by 21.3%, and the SAE decreased by 26.9%. Overall, S2 performed better than L8 in terms of FVC inversion. Additionally, in this paper, we develop a verified scheme based on UAV data in combination with the object-based classification method. This scheme is feasible and sufficiently robust for building relationships between field data and inversion results from satellite data. Further, the synergy of multi-source sensors (especially UAVs and satellites) is a potential effective way to estimate and evaluate regional ecological environmental parameters (FVC).

Abstract: Biocrusts (Biological soil crusts) are a living ground cover widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide and provide important ecological functions in ecosystems. As an important part of biocrusts, the microorganisms in the formation and succession of biocrusts should not be underestimated. However, the microbial processes among different types of biocrusts are poorly understood. We used high-throughput sequencing to identify soil bacteria and fungal community in two types of biocrusts, lichen crust and moss crust, in the Mu Us Sandland. The aims were to explore the composition, diversity, and ecological function of the microbial community in two types of biocrusts. Our study found that (1) The diversity of bacterial and fungal communities was significantly different between the two types of biocrusts. The Shannon index (6.18) of fungi in moss crust was higher than that (5.75) in lichen crust, and the operational taxonomic units of bacteria and fungi in moss crust were also higher than those in lichen crust by 3.22% and 30.61%, respectively. The bacteria and fungi community structure in two types of biocrusts were significantly different, while the differences were not significant. (2) In the microbiomes of lichen and moss biocrusts, Actinomycetes, Cyanobacteria, and Proteobacteria, the sum of which accounted for 68.01% in lichen crust and 59.88% in moss crust at operational taxonomic units level, were dominant phylum of bacteria, while the dominant phylum of fungi was mainly Ascomycota. Microcoleus (11.10%) and Exophiala (7.37%) were dominant genera in lichen crust, while the dominant genus in moss crust was RB41 (5.16%). (3) The pH, soil dissolved organic carbon, and soil organic carbon were the top three factors that correlated with both bacterial and fungal community structures. (4) The metabolic function of the bacterial community in two types of biocrusts was quite different. Abstract: Biocrusts (biological soil crusts) are a living consortium of microbes that form a protective cover on many dryland soil and rock surfaces and provide important ecological functions in ecosystems. Characterising biocrust microbial communities is an important step in understanding their functional traits. Our aims were to explore the composition, diversity, and ecological function of the microbial community in two types of biocrusts in the Mu Us Sandland, China. High-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) and Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) were used to analyze the soil bacterial and fungal communities in two types of biocrusts and their potential functions. In our study we showed that the richness and diversity of bacterial and fungal communities was significantly different between the lichen and moss biocrusts based on high-throughput sequencing. Dominant bacteria in lichen biocrusts (68.0%) were Actinomycetes, Cyanobacteria, and Proteobacteria, with 59.9% in moss biocrusts. In lichen crusts the dominant phylum of fungi was mainly Ascomycota. Microcoleus (11.1%) and Exophiala (7.4%) lichen crusts, while the dominant genus in moss crusts was RB41 (5.2%). The top three factors that were correlated with both bacterial and fungal community structures were pH, soil dissolved organic carbon, and soil organic carbon. Further analysis by FAPROTAX corroborated that the function of the bacterial community in two types of biocrusts was quite different. The relative abundances of metabolic functions in moss crusts, such as chemoheterotrophy, ureolysis, aromatic compound degradation, and nitrate reduction, were significantly higher than those in lichen crusts, however, the relative abundances of cyanobacteria, oxygenic photoautotrophy, photoautotrophy, and phototrophy were significantly lower (P < 0.05). Together, our results showed that the taxonomic and metabolic diversity, including specific species, have significant effects on the biocrusts types and their functional traits. This study provides a theoretical basis for elements of the soil microbiome restoration that may influence the establishment of plant communities.

Abstract: Caragana korshinskii Kom.sprouts readily when the stems are browsed by animals and is widely distributed in the China Loess Plateau and Hexi Corridor.C.korshinskii is a very ecologically adaptable shrub with an extensive root system capable of adsorbing large amounts of water and resistant to adverse environmental conditions.It is also very useful as forage and fuel wood.However,C.korshinskii degrades after 6—8 years as the branches die back and it is attacked by serious insect pests,decreasing its economic and ecological value.Pruning was used to stimulate regeneration of C.korshinskii,and resulted in desirable effects.Leaves and branches of C.korshinskii grew rapidly after cutting.However,little is known about the interaction between pruning and the rapid growth,and this lack of knowledge inhibits progress in managing planted shrublands.This study compares unpruned(control) to pruned(treatment) C.korshinskii plants to study the effects of pruning on the photosynthetic rate,transpiration rate,water use efficiency,the branch water potential for this kind of plant,and soil moisture content.First,the results show the effects of pruning on the physiological characteristics of C.korshinskii varied at different stages of growth.During the June flowering season,the net diurnal photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of pruned C.korshinskii declined by 14.72% and 33.33%,respectively,when compared with the control.The corresponding diurnal transpiration rate of pruned plants increased by 27.31% compared with the control.With the onset of the growing season,July to September,the net photosynthetic rates of pruned C.korshinskii gradually increased and finally exceeded the rate of the control.At the same time,the difference between the transpiration rates of the two groups decreased.Water use efficiency of the pruned plants increased quickly during the growing season,by 222.5% overall,while water use efficiency of the control increased by only 108.3%.By September,the water use efficiency of the pruned plants was 4.76% higher than the control.Second,the branch water potential of the treated plants was higher than the control during the entire growing season,both daily and monthly.Third,during the entire growing season except for May,the average soil moisture remained higher for the pruned plants when compared with the control treatment at a depth of 50—240 cm,while the variation of soil moisture was minor at the depths of 0—50 cm and at 240—300 cm.Fourth,the correlation coefficients between net photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate of both the pruned and unpruned plants increased from the beginning of the flowering season(June) through the growing season into September.The correlation analysis shows pruning significantly and negatively affects the physiological properties of C.korshinskii while positively affecting soil moisture during the first growing season after pruning.More research is needed to understand the mechanisms involved in increasing the vegetative re-growth capacity of pruned C.korshinskii.

Abstract: To better understand the effects of biological soil crusts (BSCs) on soil moisture and wind erosion and study the necessity and feasibility of disturbance of BSCs in the Mu Us sandland, the effects of four treatments, including moss-dominated crusts alone, Artemisia ordosica alone, bare sand, and Artemisia ordosica combined with moss-dominated crusts, on rainwater infiltration, soil moisture, and annual wind erosion were observed. The major results are as follows. (1) The development of moss-dominated crusts exacerbated soil moisture consumption and had negative effects on soil moisture in the Mu Us sandland. (2) Moss-dominated crusts significantly increased soil resistance to wind erosion, and when combined with Artemisia ordosica, this effect became more significant. The contribution of moss-dominated crusts under Artemisia ordosica was significantly lower than that of moss-dominated crusts alone in sites where vegetative coverage > 50%. (3) Finally, an appropriate disturbance of moss-dominated crusts in the rainy season in sites with high vegetative coverage improved soil water environment and vegetation succession, but disturbance in sites with little or no vegetative cover should be prohibited to avoid the exacerbation of wind erosion. Abstract: Grazing represents the most extensive use of land worldwide. Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and species-poor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure.
