This article highlights the importance of Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G networks in sustainable cities, focusing on disaster management systems. It also discusses suitable 5G communication technologies in disaster affected and communications outage areas. The article surveys various potential emerging communication technologies such as IoT, device-to-device communications, vehicular networks, cloud and fog computing, unmanned aerial vehicles, and sensor networks for disaster situations. The presented work offers insight in collaborative solutions using diverse technologies, which benefit from ever rising wireless connected devices to support communications in natural catastrophes. The article also presents extensive taxonomy for disaster communication systems and shares key results in selected areas. The key requirements for successful deployment of a robust communications system are also presented.

The main challenge in designing a wireless sensor network is the optimization of the energy consumption and the delay in passing the signal from leaf nodes to the base station in different application areas. Examples of sensor networking applications include fire detection, disaster recovery, crowd management and many others. The two parameters; signal delay and energy consumption are very interconnected with a huge tradeoff as trying to control one of them will certainly affect the other adversely. The objective of this paper is to propose a scheme of network architecture where both parameters are optimized resulting in minimum energy consumption and minimum possible signal delay. We propose implementing partial aggregation as opposed to no aggregation or full aggregation. Results obtained from the test carried on an actual network setting have shown that partial aggregation works better compared to the other two techniques.

Small Cells (SCs) are considered as a key enabling technique for future 5G cellular networks; whether they are deployed for Macro Cells networks densification or ensuring a standalone broadband access service. However, one of the critical challenges facing SCs deployments is a stable and an economical backhaul network. Particularly, if we consider SC for green-field deployments where operator transport infrastructure is bad or absent. Indeed, the question that arises in this specific case: what is the backhaul design that best meets economic constraints and end users Quality of Service (QoS) requirements? In this paper, we propose a novel method to design a cost-efficient SCs backhaul for green field deployment, while respecting linking technologies constraints. In fact, we formulate the problem of backhaul planning as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), wherein the objective is to minimize SCs-Core Network connection cost while providing necessary access to operator mobile broadband by using a set of different technologies. Implementation results corroborate the benefit of wireless backhaul over wired one, and give to mobile operator insightful guidelines for designing a SCs backhauls for green field deployment.

International audience; In this paper, we address the problematic choice of linking and aggregating Small Cells (SCs) access nodes with a dedicated and cost-efficient backhaul designated to offer a new coverage service for infrastructureless area. We formulate this issue as an optimization problem, and solve it by providing an Integer Linear Program (ILP). For high instances, three heuristic algorithms are investigated. Implementation of those different approaches, for three use case topologies, leads to compare linking generated cost for considered topologies as a function of own traffic of each SC node. Obtained results yield to make first step to light up the problem of backhauling a full SCs access network conceived to cover a green field area.
