The aim of the present paper is to carry out a preliminary study of the Nahua preHispanic god called Techalotl. The first part focuses on the animal avatar of this deity, whose identification in colonial sources ranges from squirrel to skunk and mole, and which, at the same time, shares many characteristics with the opossum. The next step consists on the comparison of the limited data about Techalotl included in the alphabetic and pictographic documents from Central Mexico, in order to determine the domain of this god. It has been noted that on the iconographic level he resembles the “gods-Five” or macuiltonaleque, which links him to the field of dances, songs, performances, mockery (hence his description as “god of buffoons”) and excesses. The latter aspect is reflected, among others, in his relation to sexuality and transgression, quite evident from the festive context in which the figure of the impersonator of this deity appears. The sexual connotations of squirrel are also visible in the symbolism of this animal among the Nahuas and, more broadly, in Mesoamerica, that has survived to this day in various indigenous communities., El objetivo del presente trabajo es realizar un estudio preliminar del dios prehispánico nahua llamado Techalotl. En la primera parte se identifica al avatar animal de esta deidad, que en las fuentes coloniales oscila entre ardilla, zorrillo y topo, y que al mismo tiempo comparte muchas de sus características con el tlacuache. El siguiente paso consiste en cotejar los escasos datos acerca de Techalotl provenientes de los documentos pictográficos y alfabéticos del centro de México para determinar el campo de acción de dicho dios. Se observa que este a nivel iconográfico se parece a los “dioses cinco” o macuiltonaleque, lo que le vincula con el ámbito de bailes, cantos, espectáculos, burlas (de ahí su descripción como “dios de los truhanes”) y excesos. Este último aspecto se traduce, entre otros, en su relación con la sexualidad y la transgresión, que se puede percibir a partir del contexto festivo en el que aparece la figura del representante de esta deidad, así como en el simbolismo de ardilla entre los nahuas y, más ampliamente, en Mesoamérica, que perdura hasta el día de hoy en varias comunidades indígenas. more...

The aim of this paper is to present that in the Nahua culture during the religious feasts not only is the food ritually transformed into the offering, the communion or the means of communication with the divine, but also it becomes a form of the artistic expression. In this way it is used in the preparation of the prop elements that enrich the “scenography” or as the corporal painting of the participants in the festivities. This alternative function of the food is visible in the particular application of the “breads” or figures made of the amaranth seed dough called tzoalli, of the popcorn (momochitl) gathered in garlands which was the substitute for the flowers and, finally, of the honey and the “divine food” (teotlacualli) applied as a body painting. The food, likewise, forms part of the artistic complex which characterizes the religious festivities and it is closely related to other types of the expression such as choreography. For this purpose the author uses the information from the colonial written sources of XVI and XVII century and the iconographic material from the pictorial manuscripts that proceed from the Central Mexico., El objetivo de este trabajo es probar, tras el análisis de las fuentes coloniales escritas de los siglos XVI y XVII y el material iconográfico de códices procedentes de los valles centrales de México, que en el ámbito de la cultura nahua en las fiestas religiosas la comida no sólo está ritualmente transformada en una ofrenda, un objeto de la comunión o un medio de comunicación con las deidades, sino que también se vuelve una forma de expresión artística. Así sirve para la elaboración de los elementos de utilería que enriquecen la “escenografía” o para el adorno corporal de los participantes en las festividades. Esta función alternativa de los alimentos se observa en el uso particular de los panes o figurillas hechos de masa de bledos llamada tzoalli, del maíz tostado (momochitl) recogido en guirnaldas que sustituía a las flores y, por último, de la miel y de la “comida divina” (teotlacualli), aplicadas como pintura corporal.
