Frosty pod rot (FPR), caused by Moniliophthora roreri (MR), is one of the most important diseases of cacao, causing losses of up to 90% in areas where it is present. A limited number of resistant clones have been identified, but additional sources of disease resistance are being sought by breeding programs. RNA-sequencing was used to identify differences in constitutive (mock-inoculated) and pathogen-induced gene expression in cacao pods from trees resistant and susceptible to MR. The greatest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (n=2,039) was identified in susceptible material following inoculation with MR (7 days post inoculation), with the most common pathway categories being cell growth/death (n=102), signaling (n=308), and carbohydrate metabolism (n=141). Resistant material showed little overall change in gene expression (5 DEGs) following pathogen inoculation, suggesting that infection had not become established. For this reason, differences in constitutive gene expression are likely to provide the most relevant information on FPR resistance in this study. In the absence of the pathogen, 144 genes were expressed at a higher level in the resistant material, and 265 at a higher level in the susceptible material. The genes most highly upregulated in resistant material encode for disease resistance proteins in the leucine rich repeat family and cysteine-rich receptor-like protein kinases. Ten DEGs were located within QTL on chromosomes 2, 7, and 9 previously associated with FPR resistance in this population. This study provides the first analysis of constitutively expressed genes contributing to FPR resistance and identifies significant genes within known disease resistance QTL.

We present the whole genome sequences of 56 wild Erythroxylum species from Africa, China, and the American tropics. Deep Illumina sequencing was performed on a single leaf of each voucher. We de novo assembled sequence reads and then identified and used conserved regions across all preassemblies join contigs in a finishing step. The raw and assembled data is publicly available via Genbank.

The flowering plant genus Erythroxylum contains approximately 300 species, including the economically and socially consequential crops called coca. We present the genome sequences of Erythroxylum coca and E. novogranatense, two cultigens produced for medicinal and quotidian use in the Andes and Amazon regions of South America, as well as the international cocaine industry. Sequencing was performed on an Illumina X-Ten platform, and reads were assembled by a de novo method followed by finishing via comparison with several species from the same genus. The BioProject, raw and assembled data can be accessed in GenBank for E. coca (PRJNA676123; JAJMLV000000000) and E. novogranatense (PRJNA675212; JAJKBF000000000).

Examining verbal memory recall from a speech production standpoint can greatly contribute to the understanding of both processes. The existence of the segment as the minimal unit of articulation, already shown in the naming task, has important implications for how recall might occur in verbal recall tasks. Specifically, the initial segment of a target response might be retrieved and articulated before the remainder of the word is retrieved, leading to incremental articulation of the target word with the segment as minimal unit of articulation. This possibility was explored in two experiments by examining the initial segment durations of responses during recall when blocks were either heterogeneous or homogeneous with respect to the initial segment. Incremental articulation based on the segment was found to occur during the recall task to a greater degree in homogeneous blocks in both experiments. Experiment 2 showed no strong evidence for a relation between interference and incremental articulation. Additional evidence for the segment as minimal unit of articulation was found, extending this result beyond the naming task. Prior techniques used to explore the time-course of recall, such as interresponse time, must be revised. Through exploring recall using this novel paradigm inspired by speech production research, new methods can be utilized to examine established recall effects such as the phonological similarity effect.

Satellite land remotely sensed data are used by scientists and resource managers world-wide to study similar multidisciplinary earth science problems. Most of their information requirements can be met by a small number of satellite sensor types. Moderate-resolution resource satellites and low-resolution environmental satellites are the most prominent of these, and they are the focus of this paper. Building, launching, and operating satellite systems are very expensive endeavors. Consequently, nations should change the current pattern of independently launching and operating similar, largely redundant resource and environmental satellite systems in favor of true and full collaboration in developing, launching, operating, and sharing the data from such systems of the future. The past decade has seen encouraging signs of increasing international collaboration in earth remote sensing, but full collaboration has not yet been attempted. A general strategy to achieve such international collaboration is presented here, including discussion of potential obstacles, ideas for organizing and overseeing the long-term process toward collaboration, and short-term objectives whereby early successes critical to accomplishing long-term goals can be achieved.

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data system is a cooperative system, which is operated jointly by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) through its Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC), and by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) primarily through its Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Land Processes (LP) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC). ASTER is a moderate-resolution land remote sensing system onboard the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra spacecraft. ASTER-acquired data are received at the White Sands, New Mexico, ground receiving station, and then transmitted via land network to the EOS Data and Operations System (EDOS) within the Goddard DAAC, located at the GSFC. EDOS pre-processes raw ASTER data to Level-0 (L0) data, and sends them via the high-speed Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) to the ASTER Ground Data System (GDS) in Japan. ASTER GDS processes the L0 data to level-1 (L1) datasets; they distribute these data to users, and also use them to generate higher-level products for their user community. ASTER GDS sends a copy of all L1A data they produce to NASA’s LP DAAC, located at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. All L1 data received from Japan are ingested, archived, and available for users at LP DAAC. The LP DAAC also generates and distributes higher-level products from L1 data based on requests from users. To meet time-critical needs related to sensor health and performance, natural disasters, national emergencies, and certain field campaigns, the ASTER Expedited Data System (EDS) was developed, and is operated jointly by U.S. and Japanese partners.

A constellation of satellites that routinely and frequently images the Earth's land surface in consistently calibrated wavelengths from the visible through the microwave and in spatial detail that ranges from submeter to hundreds of meters would offer enormous potential benefits to society. A well-designed and effectively operated land surface imaging satellite constellation could have great positive impact not only on the quality of life for citizens of all nations, but also on mankind's very ability to sustain life as we know it on this planet long into the future. The primary objective of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Land Surface Imaging (LSI) Constellation is to define standards (or guidelines) that describe optimal future LSI Constellation capabilities, characteristics, and practices. Standards defined for a LSI Constellation will be based on a thorough understanding of user requirements, and they will address at least three fundamental areas of the systems comprising a Land Surface Imaging Constellation: the space segments, the ground segments, and relevant policies and plans. Studies conducted by the LSI Constellation Study Team also will address current and shorter-term problems and issues facing the land remote sensing community today, such as seeking ways to work more cooperatively in the operation of existing land surface imaging systems and helping to accomplish tangible benefits to society through application of land surface image data acquired by existing systems. 2007 LSI Constellation studies are designed to establish initial international agreements, develop preliminary standards for a mid-resolution land surface imaging constellation, and contribute data to a global forest assessment.

The primary objective of the Earth Resources Observation System (EROS) Data Center (EDC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) for land processes data is to promote the interdisciplinary study and understanding of the integrated Earth system by providing remotely sensed and related ancillary data for the study, characterization, and monitoring of natural and anthropogenic conditions and processes existing and operating at or near the land surface. Generating, distributing, and preserving data and products from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) earth observing system (EOS) are primary functions of the DAAC. To that end, the EDC DAAC is using existing data sets in developing capabilities to efficiently and effectively ingest, process, manage, distribute, and archive for future generations land-related data collected by EOS sensors. Capabilities also are being developed to help users search for and acquire data and products, as well as to support their scientific application of those data and products. EDC DAAC programs and capability development activities address DAAC-defined science support requirements that relate to a broad spectrum of services and capabilities needed by science users.

In addition to acquiring multispectral data, the advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflectance radiometer (ASTER) will also acquire along-track stereo data. ASTER is capable of acquiring 771 digital stereo pairs per day, each covering 60 by 60 km on the ground, at 15 m resolution with a base/height ratio of 0.6. According to present plans, approximately 30 digital elevation models (DEMs), with 7 - 50 m accuracy (RMSExyz) will be produced daily. During the 5 year mission on the EOS AM1 platform, ASTER has the potential to provide a coherent digital stereo dataset covering the Earth's land surface. At minimum, DEMs derived from these data will augment topographic data from other sources. These fundamental geophysical measurements will be a major contribution to interdisciplinary studies of the Earth as a planet.

Chemical halos associated with lode deposits in the Park City district have been detected and have potential as guides in exploration. More than 400 wall rock samples collected in proximity to seven veins were analyzed by atomic absorption for Ag, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn. Petrographic study of selected samples showed no detectable mineralogical halos, but chemical halos of Ag, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were found, and they enlarge the target for lode deposit exploration by a factor of more than ten.

Tertiary and Quaternary nonmarine, petroleum-bearing sedimentary rocks in the Qaidam basin of remote western China have been extensively deformed by compressive forces. These forces created many folds which are current targets of Chinese exploration programs. Manual techniques of image analysis and interpretation were applied to computer-enhanced Landsat images of the western part of the Qaidam basin in an effort to evaluate the contributions of Landsat imagery in defining the geologic conditions of the basin and to determine its usefulness as an exploration tool in the region. Most success was realized in defining the structural geologic setting of the region. Image-derived interpretations of folds, strike-slip faults, thrust faults, normal or reverse faults, and fractures compared very favorably, in terms of locations and numbers mapped, with Chinese data compiled from years of extensive field mapping. The image studies resulted in the identification of at least one subsurface fold that had not been detected by field mapping. The results of this study have direct exploration significance. Many potential hydrocarbon trapping structures were precisely located and information was obtained that may have significant implications with respect to fluid migration or attempts to locate offset reservoirs and buried folds. In addition, the orientations of major structural trends defined from Landsat imagery correlate well with those predicted for the area based on global tectonic theory. These correlations suggest that similar orientations exist in the eastern half of the basin where folded rocks are mostly obscured by unconsolidated surface sediments and where limited exploration has occurred.
