Abstract

One of the most challenging problems in the computational study of localization in quantum manybody systems is to capture the effects of rare events, which requires sampling over exponentially many disorder realizations. We implement an efficient procedure on a quantum processor, leveraging quantum parallelism, to efficiently sample over all disorder realizations. We observe localization without disorder in quantum many-body dynamics in one and two dimensions: perturbations do not diffuse even though both the generator of evolution and the initial states are fully translationally invariant. The disorder strength as well as its density can be readily tuned using the initial state. Furthermore, we demonstrate the versatility of our platform by measuring Renyi entropies. Our method could also be extended to higher moments of the physical observables and disorder learning.

Abstract

Lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be employed to understand a wide range of phenomena, from elementary particle scattering in high-energy physics to effective descriptions of many-body interactions in materials. Studying dynamical properties of emergent phases can be challenging as it requires solving many-body problems that are generally beyond perturbative limits. We investigate the dynamics of local excitations in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ LGT using a two-dimensional lattice of superconducting qubits. We first construct a simple variational circuit which prepares low-energy states that have a large overlap with the ground state; then we create particles with local gates and simulate their quantum dynamics via a discretized time evolution. As the effective magnetic field is increased, our measurements show signatures of transitioning from deconfined to confined dynamics. For confined excitations, the magnetic field induces a tension in the string connecting them. Our method allows us to experimentally image string dynamics in a (2+1)D LGT from which we uncover two distinct regimes inside the confining phase: for weak confinement the string fluctuates strongly in the transverse direction, while for strong confinement transverse fluctuations are effectively frozen. In addition, we demonstrate a resonance condition at which dynamical string breaking is facilitated. Our LGT implementation on a quantum processor presents a novel set of techniques for investigating emergent particle and string dynamics.

Abstract

Quantum error correction provides a path to reach practical quantum computing by combining multiple physical qubits into a logical qubit, where the logical error rate is suppressed exponentially as more qubits are added. However, this exponential suppression only occurs if the physical error rate is below a critical threshold. In this work, we present two surface code memories operating below this threshold: a distance-7 code and a distance-5 code integrated with a real-time decoder. The logical error rate of our larger quantum memory is suppressed by a factor of $\Lambda$ = 2.14 $\pm$ 0.02 when increasing the code distance by two, culminating in a 101-qubit distance-7 code with 0.143% $\pm$ 0.003% error per cycle of error correction. This logical memory is also beyond break-even, exceeding its best physical qubit's lifetime by a factor of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.3. We maintain below-threshold performance when decoding in real time, achieving an average decoder latency of 63 $\mu$s at distance-5 up to a million cycles, with a cycle time of 1.1 $\mu$s. To probe the limits of our error-correction performance, we run repetition codes up to distance-29 and find that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring approximately once every hour, or 3 $\times$ 10$^9$ cycles. Abstract

Understanding how interacting particles approach thermal equilibrium is a major challenge of quantum simulators. Unlocking the full potential of such systems toward this goal requires flexible initial state preparation, precise time evolution, and extensive probes for final state characterization. We present a quantum simulator comprising 69 superconducting qubits which supports both universal quantum gates and high-fidelity analog evolution, with performance beyond the reach of classical simulation in cross-entropy benchmarking experiments. Emulating a two-dimensional (2D) XY quantum magnet, we leverage a wide range of measurement techniques to study quantum states after ramps from an antiferromagnetic initial state. We observe signatures of the classical Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, as well as strong deviations from Kibble-Zurek scaling predictions attributed to the interplay between quantum and classical coarsening of the correlated domains. This interpretation is corroborated by injecting variable energy density into the initial state, which enables studying the effects of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in targeted parts of the eigenspectrum. Finally, we digitally prepare the system in pairwise-entangled dimer states and image the transport of energy and vorticity during thermalization. These results establish the efficacy of superconducting analog-digital quantum processors for preparing states across many-body spectra and unveiling their thermalization dynamics.

Abstract

Measurement has a special role in quantum theory: by collapsing the wavefunction it can enable phenomena such as teleportation and thereby alter the "arrow of time" that constrains unitary evolution. When integrated in many-body dynamics, measurements can lead to emergent patterns of quantum information in space-time that go beyond established paradigms for characterizing phases, either in or out of equilibrium. On present-day NISQ processors, the experimental realization of this physics is challenging due to noise, hardware limitations, and the stochastic nature of quantum measurement. Here we address each of these experimental challenges and investigate measurement-induced quantum information phases on up to 70 superconducting qubits. By leveraging the interchangeability of space and time, we use a duality mapping, to avoid mid-circuit measurement and access different manifestations of the underlying phases -- from entanglement scaling to measurement-induced teleportation -- in a unified way. We obtain finite-size signatures of a phase transition with a decoding protocol that correlates the experimental measurement record with classical simulation data. The phases display sharply different sensitivity to noise, which we exploit to turn an inherent hardware limitation into a useful diagnostic. Our work demonstrates an approach to realize measurement-induced physics at scales that are at the limits of current NISQ processors.

Anatoxin-a is a globally occurring, yet understudied, chiral cyanobacterial toxin that threatens public health and the environment. It has led to numerous dog. livestock and bird poisonings and although it has been studied in rodent models, comparatively little research has occurred in aquatic species. To advance a comparative toxicology understanding of this toxin in alternative vertebrate models, developing zebrafish and fathead minnow were exposed to environmentally relevant and elevated levels (13–4400 μg/L) of (+) anatoxin-a to examine potential mortality and sublethal effects, including photolocomotor behavior and gene expression responses. We observed significantly higher mortality (p 0.05) transcriptional changes were observed in the fathead minnow model. These differential responses between commonly employed species employed as alternative vertebrate models in toxicology research and chemicals risk assessments highlight the need for more comparative studies to understand sensitivities and variations in organismal response. Furthermore, we identified higher mortality, refractory behavioral effects, and gene expression in (+) anatoxin-a exposed fish when compared to previously reported (±) anatoxin-a (racemic 50:50 enantiomer mixture) studies, which is frequently used as a surrogate chemical for experimental work. Our findings identify the importance of understanding species and enantiomer specific effects of natural toxins.

16. Semantic search using protein large language models detects class II microcins in bacterial genomes

Abstract

ABSTRACT Class II microcins are antimicrobial peptides that have shown some potential as novel antibiotics. However, to date, only 10 class II microcins have been described, and the discovery of novel microcins has been hampered by their short length and high sequence divergence. Here, we ask if we can use numerical embeddings generated by protein large language models to detect microcins in bacterial genome assemblies and whether this method can outperform sequence-based methods such as BLAST. We find that embeddings detect known class II microcins much more reliably than does BLAST and that any two microcins tend to have a small distance in embedding space even though they typically are highly diverged at the sequence level. In data sets of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterobacter spp. genomes, we further find novel putative microcins that were previously missed by sequence-based search methods.IMPORTANCEAntibiotic resistance is becoming an increasingly serious problem in modern medicine, but the development pipeline for conventional antibiotics is not promising. Therefore, alternative approaches to combat bacterial infections are urgently needed. One such approach may be to employ naturally occurring antibacterial peptides produced by bacteria to kill competing bacteria. A promising class of such peptides are class II microcins. However, only a small number of class II microcins have been discovered to date, and the discovery of further such microcins has been hampered by their high sequence divergence and short length, which can cause sequence-based search methods to fail. Here, we demonstrate that a more robust method for microcin discovery can be built on the basis of a protein large language model, and we use this method to identify several putative novel class II microcins.

17. Occurrence and potential risks of pharmaceutical contamination in global Estuaries: A critical review and analysis

Abstract

Input of pollutants to estuaries is one of the major threats to marine biodiversity and fishery resources, and pharmaceuticals are one of the most important contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic ecosystems. To synthesize pharmaceutical pollution levels in estuaries over the past 20 years from a global perspective, this review identified 3229 individual environmental occurrence data for 239 pharmaceuticals across 91 global estuaries distributed in 26 countries. The highest cumulative weighted average concentration level (WACL) of all detected pharmaceuticals in estuarine water was observed in Africa (145,461.86 ng/L), with 30 pharmaceuticals reported. North America (24,316.39 ng/L) was ranked second in terms of WACL, followed by South America (20,784.13 ng/L), Asia (5958.38 ng/L), Europe (4691.23 ng/L), and Oceania (2916.32 ng/L). Carbamazepine, diclofenac, and paracetamol were detected in all continents. A total of 41 functional categories of pharmaceuticals were identified, and analgesics, antibiotics, and stimulants were amongst the most ubiquitous groups in estuaries worldwide. Although many pharmaceuticals were observed to present lower than or equal to moderate ecological risk, 34 pharmaceuticals were identified with high or very high ecological risks in at least one continent. Pharmaceutical pollution in estuaries was positively correlated with regional unemployment and poverty ratios, but negatively correlated with life expectancy and GDP per capita. There are some limitations that may affect this synthesis, such as comparability of the sampling and pretreatment methodology, differences in the target pharmaceuticals for monitoring, and potentially limited number and diversity of estuaries covered, which prompt us to standardize methods for monitoring these pharmaceutical contaminants in future global studies.

Abstract

Although decentralized wastewater and distributed water reuse professionals represent a key part of environmental public health and environmental engineering, an understanding of workforce challenges has remained elusive. Here we begin to address the critical need of understanding education, training, and outreach needs for decentralized wastewater and distributed water reuse. We specifically engaged professionals working in health departments and other government agencies, industry, academia, and nongovernmental organizations. We examined workforce characteristics related to education, training, and outreach. We found that 37% of decentralized wastewater and distributed water reuse professionals plan to retire within 5 years, approximately 25% of these professionals do not hold any type of certification, and education and training are insufficient to meet current workforce demands. We further report 10 problem statements associated with timely education, training, and outreach needs, which represent important opportunities for improving the practice of decentralized wastewater and distributed water reuse. Strategic education, training, and outreach activities are necessary to ensure workforce preparedness, to promote education with owners of onsite technologies, and to expand advanced training and translational research programs in decentralized wastewater and distributed water reuse. Abstract

Leakage of quantum information out of computational states into higher energy states represents a major challenge in the pursuit of quantum error correction (QEC). In a QEC circuit, leakage builds over time and spreads through multi-qubit interactions. This leads to correlated errors that degrade the exponential suppression of logical error with scale, challenging the feasibility of QEC as a path towards fault-tolerant quantum computation. Here, we demonstrate the execution of a distance-3 surface code and distance-21 bit-flip code on a Sycamore quantum processor where leakage is removed from all qubits in each cycle. This shortens the lifetime of leakage and curtails its ability to spread and induce correlated errors. We report a ten-fold reduction in steady-state leakage population on the data qubits encoding the logical state and an average leakage population of less than $1 \times 10^{-3}$ throughout the entire device. The leakage removal process itself efficiently returns leakage population back to the computational basis, and adding it to a code circuit prevents leakage from inducing correlated error across cycles, restoring a fundamental assumption of QEC. Abstract

Indistinguishability of particles is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics. For all elementary and quasiparticles observed to date - including fermions, bosons, and Abelian anyons - this principle guarantees that the braiding of identical particles leaves the system unchanged. However, in two spatial dimensions, an intriguing possibility exists: braiding of non-Abelian anyons causes rotations in a space of topologically degenerate wavefunctions. Hence, it can change the observables of the system without violating the principle of indistinguishability. Despite the well developed mathematical description of non-Abelian anyons and numerous theoretical proposals, the experimental observation of their exchange statistics has remained elusive for decades. Controllable many-body quantum states generated on quantum processors offer another path for exploring these fundamental phenomena. While efforts on conventional solid-state platforms typically involve Hamiltonian dynamics of quasi-particles, superconducting quantum processors allow for directly manipulating the many-body wavefunction via unitary gates. Building on predictions that stabilizer codes can host projective non-Abelian Ising anyons, we implement a generalized stabilizer code and unitary protocol to create and braid them. This allows us to experimentally verify the fusion rules of the anyons and braid them to realize their statistics. We then study the prospect of employing the anyons for quantum computation and utilize braiding to create an entangled state of anyons encoding three logical qubits. Our work provides new insights about non-Abelian braiding and - through the future inclusion of error correction to achieve topological protection - could open a path toward fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Abstract

We prove for primes $p\ge 5$ a conjecture of Coleman on the analytic continuation of the family of modular functions $\frac{E^\ast_\kappa}{V(E^\ast_\kappa)}$ derived from the family of Eisenstein series $E^\ast_\kappa$. The precise, quantitative formulation of the conjecture involved a certain on $p$ depending constant. We show by an example that the conjecture with the constant that Coleman conjectured cannot hold in general for all primes. On the other hand, the constant that we give is also shown not to be optimal in all cases. The conjecture is motivated by its connection to certain central statements in works by Buzzard and Kilford, and by Roe, concerning the "halo" conjecture for the primes $2$ and $3$, respectively. A novel algorithm for the direct numerical simulation of the variable-density, low-Mach Navier-Stokes equations extending the method of Kim, Moin, and Moser (1987) for incompressible flow is presented here. A Fourier representation is employed in the two homogeneous spatial directions and a number of discretizations can be used in the inhomogeneous direction. The momentum is decomposed into divergence- and curl-free portions which allows the momentum equations to be rewritten, removing the need to solve for the pressure. The temporal discretization is based on an explicit, segregated Runge-Kutta method and the scalar equations are reformulated to directly address the redundancy of the equation of state and the mass conservation equation. An efficient, matrix-free, iterative solution of the resulting equations allows for second-order accuracy in time and numerical stability for large density ratios, which is demonstrated for ratios up to $\sim 25.7$.

Abstract

Background Adoptive T-cell therapy targeting antigens expressed in glioblastoma has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent or delay recurrence and prolong overall survival in this aggressive disease setting. Ephrin receptor A3 (EphA3), which is highly expressed in glioblastoma; in particular, on the tumor vasculature and brain cancer stem cells, is an ideal target for immune-based therapies.Methods We have designed an EphA3-targeted chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) using the single chain variable fragment of a novel monoclonal antibody, and assessed its therapeutic potential against EphA3-expressing patient-derived glioblastoma neurospheres, organoids and xenografted glioblastoma tumors in immunodeficient mice.Results In vitro expanded EphA3 CAR T cells from healthy individuals efficiently recognize and kill EphA3-positive glioblastoma cells in vitro. Furthermore, these effector cells demonstrated curative efficacy in an orthotopic xenograft model of glioblastoma. EphA3 CAR T cells were equally effective in targeting patient-derived neurospheres and infiltrate, disaggregate, and induce apoptosis in glioblastoma-derived organoids.Conclusions This study provides compelling evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of EphA3 CAR T-cell therapy against glioblastoma by targeting EphA3 associated with brain cancer stem cells and the tumor vasculature. The ability to target patient-derived glioblastoma underscores the translational significance of this EphA3 CAR T-cell therapy in the pursuit of effective and targeted glioblastoma treatment strategies.

37. Enriching the Vision of Campus Kitchen: A Recipe for Justice

Abstract

Campus Kitchen provides an environment that is ripe for community-based, experiential-learning experiences, especially on the topic of Eco-Justice. Student volunteers have substantive opportunities to investigate and promote various food justice and hunger advocacy initiatives, as well as form meaningful personal relationships with those whom they serve. Volunteers are encouraged to learn everything from the practical skills of food preparation to the social forces that underlie food insecurity in the community. Still, many Campus Kitchen participants remain unaware of the seriousness of food waste and "throwaway" cultural attitudes that perpetuate hunger. This paper presents data illustrating the different levels of understanding and action-motivations for volunteer involvement at the kitchen, concluding that a richer vision of Eco-Justice is needed. Findings from the research led program leaders to re-envision their approach to, and understanding of, justice education. Empowering students to be in the driver's seat of their education, as well as imbuing people with tools to be in charge of their own nutrition, is the best recipe for personal growth and social change.

Abstract

The Catholic, Jesuit inspired mission of Saint Louis University (SLU) -- "the pursuit of truth for the greater glory of God and for the service of humanity" -- firmly places serving humanity in line with the institution's goal for academic excellence. Importantly, service in the tradition of Catholic, Jesuit education is embedded in a broader vocational goal of forming people to build a just and equitable society. It remains to be seen in what manner and to what degree SLU students reflect the qualities such experiences are intended to aid and develop. What follows is an attempt to identify contemporary expressions of Ignatian education, a well-educated solidarity, depth of thought, and depth of imagination, within the students who took part in community engagement activities supported by SLU's Center for Service and Community Engagement. The present study drew upon assessment data from three distinct undergraduate experiences. Each of the three attributes were evident, either directly or in a latent form appropriate to the nature of the activity and the level of the student participants. While it is not possible to quantify a direct measure, the results indicate that the programs are generally succeeding in promoting an Ignatian inspired formation for its students.

Abstract

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the urgent need to strengthen public health systems. In response, the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Public Health System Resilience Scorecard (Scorecard) was applied in workshops across multiple countries. The aim of our research was to explore the workshop findings to develop priority strategies for strengthening public health system resilience. We conducted a workshop from 14 to 16 March 2023, at the UNDRR Global Education and Training Institute in Incheon, Republic of Korea. A sequential modified Delphi method was utilized to develop a set of prioritized resilience strategies. These were drawn from 70 strategies identified from 13 distinct workshops in eight countries. After two surveys, 23 strategies were finalized. Ten received ratings of “High” or “Very High” from 89% of participants. These related to the inclusion of public health risks in emergency plans, integrating multidisciplinary teams into public health, enabling local transport mechanisms, and improving the ability to manage an influx of patients. The Scorecard provides an adaptable framework to identify and prioritize strategies for strengthening public health system resilience. By leveraging this methodology, our study demonstrated how resilience strategies could inform disaster risk reduction funding, policies, and actions.
