Additive engineering of lead halide perovskites has been a successful strategy for reducing a variety of deleterious defect types. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a unique group of such additives that have been used to passivate halide vacancies in both bulk lead halide perovskites and their colloidal nanocrystal analogues. Herein, we expand the types of defects that can be addressed through IL treatments in CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals with a novel phosphonium tribromide IL that heals metallic lead surface defects through redox chemistry. This new type of surface treatment leads to a significant increase in PLQY and outperforms equivalent treatments with non-redox-active bromide ILs. Such redox-active ligands widen the scope of defect types that can be addressed in semiconductor nanocrystals.

Wide band gap AInSe 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs) is an important interlayer material for improving the efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGS) solar cells. Compared to high-vacuum deposition and solid-state synthesis, a less energy-intensive method is of interest for its fabrication. Herein, we present the rapid, low-temperature colloidal synthesis of AInSe 2 nanocrystals that opens a pathway for convenient solution processing. The crystal structures and electronic band structures of the nanocrystals were studied, and their particle morphology was found to be dependent on the choice of alkali metal and selenium precursors. Homogeneous solid solution (K,Rb,Cs)InSe 2 nanocrystals were synthesized using a mixture of alkali metal precursors. Colloidal platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) possess a myriad of technologically relevant applications. A potentially sustainable route to synthesize Pt NPs is via polyol reduction in ionic liquid (IL) solvents; however, the development of this synthetic method is limited by the fact that reaction kinetics have not been investigated. In-line analysis in a flow reactor is an appealing approach to obtain such kinetic data; unfortunately, the optical featurelessness of Pt NPs in the visible spectrum complicates the direct analysis of flow chemistry products via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrophotometry. Here, we report a machine learning (ML)-based approach to analyze in-line UV-vis spectrophotometric data to determine Pt NP product concentrations. Using a benchtop flow reactor with ML-interpreted in-line analysis, we were able to investigate NP yield as a function of residence time for two IL solvents: 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium triflate (BMPYRR-OTf) and 1-butyl-2-methylpyridinium triflate (BMPY-OTf). While these solvents are structurally similar, the polyol reduction shows radically different yields of Pt NPs depending on which solvent is used. The approach presented here will help develop an understanding of how the subtle differences in the molecular structures of these solvents lead to distinct reaction behavior. The accuracy of the ML prediction was validated by particle size analysis and the error was found to be as low as 4%. This approach is generalizable and has the potential to provide information on various reaction outcomes stemming from solvent effects, for example, differential yields, orders of reaction, rate coefficients, NP sizes, etc.

The hydrogenation of CO 2 holds promise for transforming the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. However, the challenge lies in developing robust and selective catalysts for this process. Transition metal oxide catalysts, particularly cobalt oxide, have shown potential for CO 2 hydrogenation, with performance heavily reliant on crystal phase and morphology. Achieving precise control over these catalyst attributes through colloidal nanoparticle synthesis could pave the way for catalyst and process advancement. Yet, navigating the complexities of colloidal nanoparticle syntheses, governed by numerous input variables, poses a significant challenge in systematically controlling resultant catalyst features. We present a multivariate Bayesian optimization, coupled with a data-driven classifier, to map the synthetic design space for colloidal CoO nanoparticles and simultaneously optimize them for multiple catalytically relevant features within a target crystalline phase. The optimized experimental conditions yielded small, phase-pure rock salt CoO nanoparticles of uniform size and shape. These optimized nanoparticles were then supported on SiO 2 and assessed for thermocatalytic CO 2 hydrogenation against larger, polydisperse CoO nanoparticles on SiO 2 and a conventionally prepared catalyst. The optimized CoO/SiO 2 catalyst consistently exhibited higher activity and CH 4 selectivity (ca. 98%) across various pretreatment reduction temperatures as compared to the other catalysts. This remarkable performance was attributed to particle stability and consistent H* surface coverage, even after undergoing the highest temperature reduction, achieving a more stable catalytic species that resists sintering and carbon occlusion.

Recycling ionic liquid (IL) solvents can reduce the lifecycle cost of these expensive solvents. Liquid-liquid extraction is the most straightforward approach to purify IL solvents and is typically performed with an immiscible washing agent (e.g., water). Herein, we describe a recycling route for water-miscible ILs in which direct recycling is usually challenging. We use hydrophobic ILs as accommodating agents to draw the water-miscible IL from the aqueous washing stream. A biphasic slug flow of the mixed ILs and water is then separated by using a membrane. The water-miscible IL can then be drawn out from the mixed IL phase with acidified water and dried under vacuum. Both the water-miscible IL and the accommodating agent are then recycled. Here, we demonstrated a proof-of-concept of this process by recycling 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (BMIM-OTf) in the presence of the accommodating agent 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIM-NTf 2 ) and acidified water. The design of inorganic materials for various applications critically depends on our ability to manipulate their synthesis in a rational, robust, and controllable fashion. Different from the conventional trial-and-error approach, data-driven techniques such as the design of experiments (DoE) and machine learning are an effective and more efficient way to predictably control materials synthesis. Here, we present a Viewpoint on recent progress in leveraging such techniques for predicting and controlling the outcomes of inorganic materials synthesis. We first compare how the design choice (statistical DoE vs machine learning) affects the type of control it can offer over the resulting product attributes, information elucidated, and experimental cost. These attributes are supported by discussing select case studies from the recent literature that highlight the power of these techniques for materials synthesis. The influence of experimental bias is next discussed, followed finally by our perspectives on the major challenges in the widespread implementation of predictable and controllable materials synthesis using data-driven techniques.

Copper selenides are an important family of materials with applications in catalysis, plasmonics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. Despite being a binary material system, the Cu-Se phase diagram is complex and contains multiple crystal structures in addition to several metastable structures that are not found on the thermodynamic phase diagram. Consequently, the ability to synthetically navigate this complex phase space poses a significant challenge. We demonstrate that data-driven learning can successfully map this phase space in a minimal number of experiments. We combine soft chemistry ( chimie douce ) synthetic methods with multivariate analyses via classification techniques to enable predictive phase determination. A surrogate model was constructed with experimental data derived from a design matrix of four experimental variables: C-Se bond strength of the selenium precursor, time, temperature, and solvent composition. The reactions in the surrogate model resulted in 11 distinct phase combinations of copper selenide. These data were used to train a classification model that predicts the phase with 95.7% accuracy. The resulting decision tree enabled conclusions to be drawn about how the experimental variables affect the phase and provided prescriptive synthetic conditions for specific phase isolation. This guided the accelerated phase targeting in a minimum number of experiments of klockmannite CuSe, which could not be isolated in any of the reactions used to construct the surrogate model. The reaction conditions that the model predicted to synthesize klockmannite CuSe were experimentally validated, highlighting the utility of this approach.

The power conversion efficiencies of lead halide perovskite thin film solar cells have surged in the short time since their inception. Compounds, such as ionic liquids (ILs), have been explored as chemical additives and interface modifiers in perovskite solar cells, contributing to the rapid increase in cell efficiencies. However, due to the small surface area-to-volume ratio of the large grained polycrystalline halide perovskite films, an atomistic understanding of the interaction between ILs and perovskite surfaces is limited. Here, we use quantum dots (QDs) to study the coordinative surface interaction between phosphonium-based ILs and CsPbBr3. When native oleylammonium oleate ligands are exchanged off the QD surface with the phosphonium cation as well as the IL anion, a threefold increase in photoluminescent quantum yield of as-synthesized QDs is observed. The CsPbBr3 QD structure, shape, and size remain unchanged after ligand exchange, indicating only a surface ligand interaction at approximately equimolar additions of the IL. Increased concentrations of the IL lead to a disadvantageous phase change and a concomitant decrease in photoluminescent quantum yields. Valuable information regarding the coordinative interaction between certain ILs and lead halide perovskites has been elucidated and can be used for informed pairing of beneficial combinations of IL cations and anions., (© 2023 Author(s). A P 16 2- polyphosphide dianion ink was produced by the reaction of red phosphorus with a binary thiol-amine mixture of ethanethiol (ET) and ethylenediamine (en). The polyphosphide was identified by solution 31 P NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. This solute was compared to the reaction products of white phosphorus (P 4 ) and other elemental pnictides in the same solvent system. The reaction of P 4 with ET and en gives the same P 16 2- polyphosphide; however, the easier handling and lower reactivity of red phosphorus highlights the novelty of that reaction. Elemental arsenic and antimony both give mononuclear pnictogen-sulfide-thiolate complexes upon reaction with ET and en under otherwise identical conditions, with this difference likely resulting from the greater covalency and tendency of phosphorus to form P-P bonds.

Control over colloidal nanocrystal morphology (size, size distribution, and shape) is important for tailoring the functionality of individual nanocrystals and their ensemble behavior. Despite this, traditional methods to quantify nanocrystal morphology are laborious. New developments in automated morphology classification will accelerate these analyses but the assessment of machine learning models is limited by human accuracy for ground truth, causing even unsupervised machine learning models to have inherent bias. Herein, we introduce synthetic image rendering to solve the ground truth problem of nanocrystal morphology classification. By simulating 2D images of nanocrystal shapes via a function of high-dimensional parameter space, we trained a convolutional neural network to link unique morphologies to their simulated parameters, defining nanocrystal morphology quantitatively rather than qualitatively. An automated pipeline then processes, quantitatively defines, and classifies nanocrystal morphology from experimental transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Using improved computer vision techniques, 42 650 nanocrystals were identified, assessed, and labeled with quantitative parameters, offering a 600-fold improvement in efficiency over best-practice manual measurements. A classification algorithm was trained with a prediction accuracy of 99.5%, which can successfully analyze a range of concave, convex, and irregular nanocrystal shapes. The resulting pipeline was applied to differentiating two syntheses of nominally cuboidal CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals and uniquely classifying binary nickel sulfide nanocrystal phase based on morphology. This pipeline provides a simple, efficient, and unbiased method to quantify nanocrystal morphology and represents a practical route to construct large datasets with an absolute ground truth for training unbiased morphology-based machine learning algorithms.

There is increasing demand for tailored molecular inks that produce phase-pure solution-processed semiconductor films. Within the Cu-Sn-S phase space, Cu 2 SnS 3 belongs to the I 2 -IV-VI 3 class of semiconductors that crystallizes in several different polymorphs. We report the ability of thiol-amine solvent mixtures to dissolve inexpensive bulk Cu 2 S and SnO precursors to generate free-flowing molecular inks. Upon mild annealing, polymorphic control over phase-pure tetragonal ( I 4̅2 m ) and orthorhombic ( Cmc 2 1 ) Cu 2 SnS 3 films was realized simply by switching the identity of the thiol (i.e., 1,2-ethanedithiol vs 2-mercaptoethanol, respectively). Polymorph control is dictated by differences in the resulting molecular metal-thiolate complexes and their subsequent decomposition profiles, which likely seed distinct Cu 2- x S phases that template the ternary sulfide sublattice. The p-type tetragonal and orthorhombic Cu 2 SnS 3 films possess similar experimental direct optical band gaps of 0.94 and 0.88 eV, respectively, and strong photoelectrochemical current responses. Transition-metal carbides are promising low-cost materials for various catalytic transformations due to their multifunctionality and noble-metal-like behavior. Nanostructuring transition-metal carbides offers advantages resulting from the large surface-area-to-volume ratios inherent in colloidal nanoparticle catalysts; however, a barrier for their utilization is removal of the long-chain aliphatic ligands on their surface to access active sites. Annealing procedures to remove these ligands require temperatures greater than the catalyst synthesis and catalytic reaction temperatures and may further result in coking or particle sintering that can reduce catalytic performance. One way to circumvent this problem is by replacing the long-chain aliphatic ligands with smaller ligands that can be easily removed through low-temperature thermolytic decomposition. Here, we present the exchange of native oleylamine ligands on colloidal α-MoC 1- x nanoparticles for thermally labile tert -butylamine ligands. Analyses of the ligand exchange reaction by solution 1 H NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) confirm the displacement of 60% of the native oleylamine ligands for the thermally labile tert -butylamine, which can be removed with a mild activation step at 250 °C. Catalytic site densities were determined by carbon monoxide (CO) chemisorption, demonstrating that the mild thermal treatment at 250 °C activates ca. 25% of the total binding sites, while the native oleylamine-terminated MoC 1- x nanoparticles showed no available surface binding sites after this low-temperature treatment. Oxide dissolution is important for metal extraction from ores and has become an attractive route for the preparation of inks for thin film solution deposition; however, oxide dissolution is often kinetically challenging. While binary "alkahest" systems comprised of thiols and N -donor species, such as amines, are known to dissolve a wide range of oxides, the mechanism of dissolution and identity of the resulting solute(s) remain unstudied. Here, we demonstrate facile dissolution of both bulk synthetic and natural mineral ZnO samples using an "alkahest" that operates via reaction with thiophenol and 1-methylimidazole (MeIm) to give a single, pseudotetrahedral Zn(SPh) 2 (MeIm) 2 molecular solute identified by X-ray crystallography. The kinetics of ZnO dissolution were measured using solution 1 H NMR, and the reaction was found to be zero-order in the presence of excess ligands, with more electron withdrawing para -substituted thiophenols resulting in faster dissolution. A negative entropy of activation was measured by Eyring analysis, indicating associative ligand binding in, or prior to, the rate determining step. Combined experimental and computational surface binding studies on ZnO reveal stronger, irreversible thiophenol binding compared to MeIm, leading to a proposed dissolution mechanism initiated by thiol binding to the ZnO surface with the liberation of water, followed by alternating MeIm and thiolate ligand additions, and ultimately cleavage of the ligated zinc complex from the ZnO surface. Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 is a direct band gap semiconductor composed of earth-abundant elements, making it an attractive material for thin-film photovoltaic technologies. Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 crystallizes in the kesterite structure type as a bulk material, but it can also crystallize in a metastable wurtzite-like crystal structure when synthesized on the nanoscale. The wurtzite-like polymorph introduces unique and useful properties to Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 materials, including widely tunable band gaps and superior compositional flexibility as compared to kesterite Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 . Here, we investigate the formation pathway of colloidally prepared wurtzite-like Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 nanocrystals. We show that this quaternary material forms through a chain of reactions, starting with binary Cu 3 Se 2 nanocrystals that, due to both kinetic and thermodynamic reasons, preferentially react with tin to yield hexagonal copper tin selenide intermediates. These ternary intermediates then react with zinc to form the resulting wurtzite-like Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 nanocrystals. Based on this formation pathway, we suggest synthetic methods that may prevent the formation of unwanted impurity phases that are known to hamper the efficiency of Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 -based optoelectronic devices.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are versatile L-type ligands that have been shown to stabilize coinage metal chalcogenide nanocrystals, such as Ag 2 S, remarkably well. However, very little research has been done on the interaction between NHC ligands and coinage metal chalcogenide nanocrystal surfaces and subsequent ligand exchange reactions. Herein, solution 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance methods were used to monitor ligand exchange reactions on stoichiometric Ag 2 S nanocrystal platforms with various primary amine and carboxylic acid ligands. Despite the introduction of new ligands, the native NHC ligands remain tightly bound to the Ag 2 S nanocrystal surface and are not displaced at room temperature. Primary amine and carboxylic acid ligands demonstrated quantitative ligand exchange only after the samples had been heated with an excess incoming ligand, which implies a strong NHC-Ag binding energy. Density functional theory affirms that a model NHC ligand binds the strongest to a Ag 12 S 6 cluster surface, followed by amine and carboxylic acid binding; computational analysis is therefore in line with the absence of NHC displacement observed in experiments. Both the bulky sterics of the C14-alkyl chains on the NHC and the high energies for the binding of NHC to the Ag 2 S surface contribute to the superior colloidal stability over conventional long-chain amine or carboxylic acid ligands (many months vs hours to days).

I 2 -II-IV-VI 4 and I-III-VI 2 semiconductor nanocrystals have found applications in photovoltaics and other optoelectronic technologies because of their low toxicity and efficient light absorption into the near-infrared. Herein, we report the discovery of a metastable wurtzite-like polymorph of Cu 2 FeSnSe 4 , a member of the I 2 -II-IV-VI 4 family of semiconductors containing only earth-abundant metals. Density functional theory calculations on this metastable polymorph of Cu 2 FeSnSe 4 indicate that it may be a superior semiconductor for solar energy and optoelectronics applications compared to the thermodynamically preferred stannite polymorph, since the former displays a sharper dispersion of energy levels near the conduction band minimum that can enhance electron mobility and suppress hot electron cooling. The experimental optical band gap was measured by the inverse logarithmic derivative method to be direct, in agreement with theory, and in the range of 1.48-1.59 eV. Mechanistic studies reveal that this metastable phase derives from intermediate Cu 3 Se 2 nanocrystals that serve as a structural template for the final hexagonal wurtzite-like product. We compare the chemistry of wurtzite-like Cu 2 FeSnSe 4 to the related CuFeSe 2 material system. Our experimental and computational comparisons between Cu 2 FeSnSe 4 and CuFeSe 2 help explain both the crystal chemistry of CuFeSe 2 that prevents it from forming wurtzite-like polymorphs and the essential role of Sn in stabilizing the metastable structure of Cu 2 FeSnSe 4 . This work provides insight into the importance of elemental composition when designing syntheses for metastable materials.

Structural polymorphism is known for many bulk materials; however, on the nanoscale metastable polymorphs tend to form more readily than in the bulk, and with more structural variety. One such metastable polymorph observed for colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals has traditionally been referred to as the "tetragonal" phase. While there are reports on the chemistry and properties of this metastable polymorph, its crystal structure, and therefore electronic structure, has yet to be determined. We report that an anti-PbCl 2 -like structure type (space group P 2 1 / n ) more accurately describes the powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray total scattering patterns of colloidal Ag 2 Se nanocrystals prepared by several different methods. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that this anti-PbCl 2 -like Ag 2 Se polymorph is a dynamically stable, narrow-band-gap semiconductor. The anti-PbCl 2 -like structure of Ag 2 Se is a low-lying metastable polymorph at 5-25 meV/atom above the ground state, depending on the exchange-correlation functional used.

Thiospinels, such as CoNi 2 S 4 , are showing promise for numerous applications, including as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction, hydrodesulfurization, and oxygen evolution and reduction reactions; however, CoNi 2 S 4 has not been synthesized as small, colloidal nanocrystals with high surface-area-to-volume ratios. Traditional optimization methods to control nanocrystal attributes such as size typically rely upon one variable at a time (OVAT) methods that are not only time and labor intensive but also lack the ability to identify higher-order interactions between experimental variables that affect target outcomes. Herein, we demonstrate that a statistical design of experiments (DoE) approach can optimize the synthesis of CoNi 2 S 4 nanocrystals, allowing for control over the responses of nanocrystal size, size distribution, and isolated yield. After implementing a 2 5-2 fractional factorial design, the statistical screening of five different experimental variables identified temperature, Co:Ni precursor ratio, Co:thiol ratio, and their higher-order interactions as the most critical factors in influencing the aforementioned responses. Second-order design with a Doehlert matrix yielded polynomial functions used to predict the reaction parameters needed to individually optimize all three responses. A multiobjective optimization, allowing for the simultaneous optimization of size, size distribution, and isolated yield, predicted the synthetic conditions needed to achieve a minimum nanocrystal size of 6.1 nm, a minimum polydispersity (σ/ d̅ ) of 10%, and a maximum isolated yield of 99%, with a desirability of 96%. The resulting model was experimentally verified by performing reactions under the specified conditions. Our work illustrates the advantage of multivariate experimental design as a powerful tool for accelerating control and optimization in nanocrystal syntheses.

ConspectusSince the initial discovery of colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals, there has been significant interest placed on these semiconductors because of their remarkable optoelectronic properties, including very high photoluminescence quantum yields, narrow size- and composition-tunable emission over a wide color gamut, defect tolerance, and suppressed blinking. These material attributes have made them attractive components for next-generation solar cells, light emitting diodes, low-threshold lasers, single photon emitters, and X-ray scintillators. While a great deal of research has gone into the various applications of colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals, comparatively little work has focused on the fundamental surface chemistry of these materials. While the surface chemistry of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals is generally affected by their particle morphology, surface stoichiometry, and organic ligands that contribute to the first coordination sphere of their surface atoms, these attributes are markedly different in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals because of their ionicity.In this Account, emerging work on the surface chemistry of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals is highlighted, with a particular focus placed on the most-studied composition of CsPbBr 3 . We begin with an in-depth exploration of the native surface chemistry of as-prepared, 0-D cuboidal CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals, including an atomistic description of their surface termini, vacancies, and ionic bonding with ligands. We then proceed to discuss various post-synthetic surface treatments that have been developed to increase the photoluminescence quantum yields and stability of CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals, including the use of tetraalkylammonium bromides, metal bromides, zwitterions, and phosphonic acids, and how these various ligands are known to bind to the nanocrystal surface. To underscore the effect of post-synthetic surface treatments on the application of these materials, we focus on lead halide perovskite nanocrystal-based light emitting diodes, and the positive effect of various surface treatments on external quantum efficiencies. We also discuss the current state-of-the-art in the surface chemistry of 1-D nanowires and 2-D nanoplatelets of CsPbBr 3 , which are more quantum confined than the corresponding cuboidal nanocrystals but also generally possess a higher defect density because of their increased surface area-to-volume ratios.

Doped and alloyed germanium nanocrystals (Ge NCs) are potential candidates for a variety of applications such as photovoltaics and near IR detectors. Recently, bismuth (Bi) as an n -type group 15 element was shown to be successfully and kinetically doped into Ge NCs through a microwave-assisted solution-based synthesis, although Bi is thermodynamically insoluble in bulk crystalline Ge. To expand the composition manipulation of Ge NCs, another more common n -type group 15 element for semiconductors, antimony (Sb), is investigated. Oleylamine (OAm)- and OAm/trioctylphosphine (TOP)-capped Sb-doped Ge NCs have been synthesized by the microwave-assisted solution reaction of GeI 2 with SbI 3 . Passivating the Ge surface with a binary ligand system of OAm/TOP results in formation of consistently larger NCs compared to OAm alone. The TOP coordination on the Ge surface is confirmed by 31 P NMR and SEM-EDS. The lattice parameter of Ge NCs increases with increasing Sb concentration (0.00-2.0 mol %), consistent with incorporation of Sb. An increase in the NC diameter with higher content of SbI 3 in the reaction is shown by TEM. XPS and EDS confirm the presence of Sb before and after removal of surface ligands with hydrazine and recapping the Ge NC surface with dodecanethiol (DDT). EXAFS analysis suggests that Sb resides within the NCs on highly distorted sites next to a Ge vacancy as well as on the crystallite surface. High Urbach energies obtained from photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS) of the films prepared from pristine Ge NC and Sb-doped Ge NCs indicate high levels of disorder, in agreement with EXAFS data. Electrical measurements on TiO 2 -NC electron- and hole-only devices show an increase in hole conduction, suggesting that the Sb-vacancy defects are behaving as a p- type dopant in the Ge NCs, consistent with the vacancy model derived from the EXAFS results.

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an important class of ligands capable of making strong carbon-metal bonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of carbene-ligated nanocrystals, primarily coinage metal nanocrystals, which have found application as catalysts for numerous reactions. The general ability of NHC ligands to positively affect the catalytic properties of other types of nanocrystal catalysts remains unknown. Herein, we present the first carbene-stabilized Cu 3- x P nanocrystals. Inquiries into the mechanism of formation of NHC-ligated Cu 3- x P nanocrystals suggest that crystalline Cu 3- x P forms directly as a result of a high-temperature metathesis reaction between a tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine precursor and an NHC-CuBr precursor, the latter of which behaves as a source of both the carbene ligand and Cu + . To study the effect of the NHC surface ligands on the catalytic performance, we tested the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolving ability of the NHC-ligated Cu 3- x P nanocrystals and found that they possess superior activity to analogous oleylamine-ligated Cu 3- x P nanocrystals. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the NHC ligands minimize unfavorable electrostatic interactions between the copper phosphide surface and H + during the first step of the hydrogen evolution reaction, which contributes to the superior performance of NHC-ligated Cu 3- x P catalysts as compared to oleylamine-ligated Cu 3- x P catalysts.

We developed a 16-channel millifluidic reactor that uses a multiphase gas-liquid flow to continuously produce colloidal CsPbBr 3 quantum dots with a throughtput of ∼1 L h -1 . The optical properties of the product were monitored, and the reaction conditions were optimized in real time based on the in situ photoluminescence characteristics of the quantum dots.

Cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have gained significant attention as next-generation optoelectronic materials; however, their properties are highly dependent on their surface chemistry. The surfaces of cuboidal CsPbBr 3 QDs have been intensively studied by both theoretical and experimental techniques, but fundamental questions still remain about the atomic termination of the QDs. The binding sites and modes of ligands at the surface remain unproven. Herein, we demonstrate that solid-state NMR spectroscopy allows the unambiguous assignment of organic surface ligands via 1 H, 13 C, and 31 P NMR. Surface-selective 133 Cs solid-state NMR spectra show the presence of an additional 133 Cs NMR signal with a unique chemical shift that is attributed to Cs atoms terminating the surface of the particle and which are likely coordinated by carboxylate ligands. Dipolar dephasing curves that report on the distance between the surface ammonium ligands and Cs and Pb were recorded using double resonance 1 H{ 133 Cs} RESPDOR and 1 H{ 207 Pb} S-REDOR experiments. Model QD surface slabs with different possible surface terminations were generated from the CsPbBr 3 crystal structure, and theoretical dipolar dephasing curves considering all possible 1 H- 133 Cs/ 207 Pb spin pairs were then calculated. Comparison of the calculated and experimental dephasing curves indicates the particles are CsBr terminated (not PbBr 2 terminated) with alkylammonium ligands substituting into some surface Cs sites, consistent with the surface-selective 133 Cs NMR experiments. These results highlight the utility of high-resolution solid-state NMR spectroscopy for studying ligand binding and the surface structure of nanomaterials.

There is considerable interest in the exploration of new solar absorbers that are environmentally stable, absorb through the visible, and possess a polar crystal structure. Bournonite CuPbSbS 3 is a naturally occurring sulfosalt mineral that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric Pmn 2 1 space group and possesses an optimal band gap for single junction solar cells; however, the synthetic literature on this quaternary semiconductor is sparse and it has yet to be deposited and studied as a thin film. Here we describe the ability of a binary thiol-amine solvent mixture to dissolve the bulk bournonite mineral as well as inexpensive bulk CuO, PbO, and Sb 2 S 3 precursors at room temperature and ambient pressure to generate an ink. The synthetic compound ink derived from the dissolution of the bulk binary precursors in the right stoichiometric ratios yields phase-pure thin films of CuPbSbS 3 upon solution deposition and annealing. The resulting semiconductor thin films possess a direct optical band gap of 1.24 eV, an absorption coefficient ∼10 5 cm -1 through the visible, mobilities of 0.01-2.4 cm 2 (V·s) -1 , and carrier concentrations of 10 18 - 10 20 cm -3 . These favorable optoelectronic properties suggest CuPbSbS 3 thin films are excellent candidates for solar absorbers.

As surface ligands play a critical role in the colloidal stability and optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanocrystals, we used solution NMR experiments to investigate the surface coordination chemistry of Ge nanocrystals synthesized by a microwave-assisted reduction of GeI 2 in oleylamine. The as-synthesized Ge nanocrystals are coordinated to a fraction of strongly bound oleylamide ligands (with covalent X-type Ge-NHR bonds) and a fraction of more weakly bound (or physisorbed) oleylamine, which readily exchanges with free oleylamine in solution. The fraction of strongly bound oleylamide ligands increases with increasing synthesis temperature, which also correlates with better colloidal stability. Thiol and carboxylic acid ligands bind to the Ge nanocrystal surface only upon heating, suggesting a high kinetic barrier to surface binding. These incoming ligands do not displace native oleylamide ligands but instead appear to coordinate to open surface sites, confirming that the as-prepared nanocrystals are not fully passivated. These findings will allow for a better understanding of the surface chemistry of main group nanocrystals and the conditions necessary for ligand exchange to ultimately maximize their functionality.

Transition metal carbides (TMCs) have demonstrated outstanding potential for utilization in a wide range of catalytic applications because of their inherent multifunctionality and tunable composition. However, the harsh conditions required to prepare these materials have limited the scope of synthetic control over their physical properties. The development of low-temperature, carburization-free routes to prepare TMCs would unlock the versatility of this class of materials, enhance our understanding of their physical properties, and enable their cost-effective production at industrial scales. Here, we report an exceptionally mild and scalable solution-phase synthesis route to phase-pure molybdenum carbide (α-MoC 1- x ) nanoparticles (NPs) in a continuous flow millifluidic reactor. We exploit the thermolytic decomposition of Mo(CO) 6 in the presence of a surface-stabilizing ligand and a high boiling point solvent to yield MoC 1- x NPs that are colloidally stable and resistant to bulk oxidation in air. To demonstrate the utility of this synthetic route to prepare catalytically active TMC NPs, we evaluated the thermochemical CO 2 hydrogenation performance of α-MoC 1- x NPs dispersed on an inert carbon support. The α-MoC 1- x /C catalyst exhibited a 2-fold increase in both activity on a per-site basis and selectivity to C 2+ products as compared to the bulk α-MoC 1- x analogue.

A series of CdSe quantum dot acceptors possessing six different ligand frameworks (i.e., pivalic acid, pyridine, butylamine, tert-butylthiol, thiophenol, and tetrahydrothiophene) were used as platforms for investigating the influence of quantum dot surface chemistry on the performance of hybrid poly(3-hexythiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):CdSe quantum dot bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. We confirm that the device parameters used to evaluate solar cell performance are significantly influenced by the nature of the quantum dot surface ligand. The dependence of short circuit current density (J SC ) on the CdSe ligand type was probed using ultrafast time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and good correlations between the ligand-dependent trends in J SC and excited state lifetime were found, in which the P3HT:CdSe quantum dot BHJs with the shortest PL lifetimes possess the largest device current densities. The frontier energy levels of the quantum dot acceptors are significantly influenced by surface ligands, wherein the device open circuit potentials (V OC ) were found to linearly correlate with the energy difference (ΔE DA ) between the HOMO of the P3HT donor and the electrochemically determined LUMO of the CdSe quantum dot acceptors over a range of 220 mV. This work demonstrates the versatility of quantum dot ligand engineering for tuning the device parameters and performance of hybrid solar cells.

One of the obstacles preventing the commercialization of colloidal nanoparticle catalysts is the difficulty in fabricating these materials at scale while maintaining a high level of control over their resulting morphologies, and ultimately, their properties. Translation of batch-scale solution nanoparticle syntheses to continuous flow reactors has been identified as one method to address the scaling issue. The superior heat and mass transport afforded by the high surface-area-to-volume ratios of micro- and millifluidic channels allows for high control over reaction conditions and oftentimes results in decreased reaction times, higher yields, and/or more monodisperse size distributions compared to an analogous batch reaction. Furthermore, continuous flow reactors are automatable and have environmental health and safety benefits, making them practical for commercialization. Herein, a discussion of continuous flow methods, reactor design, and potential challenges is presented. A thorough account of the implementation of these technologies for the fabrication of catalytically active metal nanoparticles is reviewed for hydrogenation, electrocatalysis, and oxidation reactions.

Cesium lead halide perovskites are an emerging class of quantum dots (QDs) that have shown promise in a variety of applications; however, their properties are highly dependent on their surface chemistry. To this point, the thermodynamics of ligand binding remain unstudied. Herein, 1 H NMR methods were used to quantify the thermodynamics of ligand exchange on CsPbBr 3 QDs. Both oleic acid and oleylamine native ligands dynamically interact with the CsPbBr 3 QD surface, having individual surface densities of 1.2-1.7 nm -2 . 10-Undecenoic acid undergoes an exergonic exchange equilibrium with bound oleate (K eq =1.97) at 25 °C while 10-undecenylphosphonic acid undergoes irreversible ligand exchange. Undec-10-en-1-amine exergonically exchanges with oleylamine (K eq =2.52) at 25 °C. Exchange occurs with carboxylic acids, phosphonic acids, and amines on CsPbBr 3 QDs without etching of the nanocrystal surface; increases in the steady-state PL intensities correlate with more strongly bound conjugate base ligands., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Morphologically well-defined colloidal nanocrystals of Ni3S4, NiS, Ni9S8, and Ni3S2 were independently prepared through a solution-phase synthesis using N,N'-disubstituted thioureas as the sulfur precursor. Synthetic control over phase and composition of the resulting colloidal nickel sulfide nanocrystals was achieved by primarily adjusting the reactivity of substituted thioureas as well as tuning the key reaction parameters of temperature and precursor ratio. In general, the more reactive N,N'-diphenyl thiourea yields more sulfur-rich phases (Ni3S4 and NiS) while less reactive N,N'-dibutyl thiourea yields sulfur-poor phases (Ni9S8 and Ni3S2). This phase control can be further tuned through the use of 1-dodecanethiol as an important secondary reactivity-directing agent. In the presence of 1-dodecanethiol, nanocrystals of more sulfur-deficient phases are prepared, while in the absence of 1-dodecanethiol, more sulfur-rich phases are prepared. Under the most sulfur-rich synthetic conditions (i.e., with N,N'-diphenyl thiourea and no thiol) a phase progression from Ni3S4 to the α-NiS and β-NiS phases was observed upon an increase in reaction temperature and sulfur-to-nickel precursor ratio. This study establishes, for the first time, a systematic evaluation of factors that simultaneously control the phase and yield well-defined nickel sulfide nanocrystals.

Solution processing has emerged as a promising option for the preparation of functional materials with methods that tend to be cheap, less energy intensive, and allow for high throughput and large area deposition. A recently developed method, whereby a binary thiol-amine solvent mixture is used to dissolve bulk oxides, chalcogenides, or elemental materials to yield molecular precursor inks for the deposition of phase pure chalcogenide materials, has recently garnered attention for applications in optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and electrocatalysis. Presented here is a summary of reports on the application of this "alkahest" method for the deposition of electrocatalytic materials. Ink formulations drawing on the vast library of bulk precursor solutes have already resulted in a large collection of synthesized functional materials, with room still to explore new, or less studied, materials. Additionally, as is seen for the electrocatalysts, engineering of inks and deposition procedures can lead to higher performance through optimized morphology and form factors.

With hydrogen fuel becoming a more viable alternative to fossil fuels comes the need for inexpensive, low-energy hydrogen production. Here, a low-temperature direct solution-processing method is presented for the deposition of earth-abundant pyrite-type NiSe 2 as an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. Thin films of phase-pure NiSe 2 are deposited from a precursor ink prepared by room-temperature dissolution of bulk elemental Ni and Se in a binary thiolamine solvent mixture. The nanostructured NiSe 2 thin films demonstrate high HER catalytic activity with 100% Faradaic efficiency.

Macroelectronics is a major focus in electronics research and is driven by large area applications such as flat panel displays and thin film solar cells. Innovations for these technologies, such as flexible substrates and mass production, will require efficient and affordable semiconductor processing. Low-temperature solution processing offers mild deposition methods, inexpensive processing equipment, and the possibility of high-throughput processing. In recent years, the discovery that binary "alkahest" mixtures of ethylenediamine and short chain thiols possess the ability to dissolve bulk inorganic materials to yield molecular inks has lead to the wide study of such systems and the straightforward recovery of phase pure crystalline chalcogenide thin films upon solution processing and mild annealing of the inks. In this review, we recount the work that has been done toward elucidating the scope of this method for the solution processing of inorganic materials for use in applications such as photovoltaic devices, electrocatalysts, photodetectors, thermoelectrics, and nanocrystal ligand exchange. We also take stock of the wide range of bulk materials that can be used as soluble precursors, and discuss the work that has been done to reveal the nature of the dissolved species. This method has provided a vast toolbox of over 65 bulk precursors, which can be utilized to develop new routes to functional chalcogenide materials. Future studies in this area should work toward a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the dissolution and recovery of bulk materials, as well as broadening the scope of soluble precursors and recoverable functional materials for innovative applications.

The gram-scale preparation of Fe 2 (WO 4 ) 3 by a new solution-based route and detailed characterization of the material are presented. The resulting Fe 2 (WO 4 ) 3 undergoes a reversible electrochemical reaction against lithium centered around 3.0 V with capacities near 93% of the theoretical maximum. Evolution of the Fe 2 (WO 4 ) 3 structure upon lithium insertion and deinsertion is probed using a battery of characterization techniques, including in situ X-ray diffraction, neutron total scattering, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). A structural transformation from monoclinic to orthorhombic phases is confirmed during lithium intercalation. XAS and neutron total scattering measurements verify that Fe 2 (WO 4 ) 3 consists of trivalent iron and hexavalent tungsten ions. As lithium ions are inserted into the framework, iron ions are reduced to the divalent state, while the tungsten ions are electrochemically inactive and remain in the hexavalent state. Lithium insertion occurs via a concerted rotation of the rigid polyhedra in the host lattice driven by electrostatic interactions with the Li + ions; the magnitude of these polyhedral rotations was found to be slightly larger for Fe 2 (WO 4 ) 3 than for the Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 analog.

Ba x Sr 1-x TiO 3 perovskite nanocrystals, prepared by the vapor diffusion sol-gel method and characterized by state of the art surface techniques, display significantly different O-H stretching frequencies and adsorption properties towards CO 2 as a function of the alkaline earth composition (Ba vs. Sr). The difference of properties can be associated with the more basic nature of BaO-rich than SrO-rich surfaces.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are becoming increasingly popular ligand frameworks for nanocrystal surfaces; however, as of yet the nature of the NHC-nanocrystal interface remains unexplored across different material types. Here we report a facile synthetic route to NHC-stabilized metal and metal chalcogenide nanocrystals. It was observed that NHC-Ag nanocrystals are colloidally stable, but much less so than the corresponding NHC-Ag 2 E analogues. Comprehensive NMR studies suggest a dynamic NHC-nanocrystal interface for both NHC-Ag and NHC-Ag 2 S; however, density functional theory calculations reveal a much stronger binding affinity of the NHC ligands to Ag 2 S compared with Ag nanocrystals, which explains the superior colloidal stability of the metal chalcogenides. This offers new insight into the surface chemistry of neutral L-type carbenes in colloidal nanocrystal chemistry.

A series of Eu 3+ -, Tb 3+ -, and Tm 3+ -doped CaWO 4 phosphor nanocrystals have been synthesized under benign conditions using the vapor diffusion sol-gel method. The high degree of synthetic flexibility inherent to this approach has enabled the synthesis of a CaWO 4 :(Eu,Tb) dual-sensitized white light emitting nanocrystal phosphor upon commercial UV excitation at 366 nm with a long lifetime exceeding 1 ms.

Colloidally synthesized quantum dots of CsPbBr3 are highly promising for light-emitting applications. Previous reports based on benchtop diffraction conflict as to the crystal structure of CsPbBr3 quantum dots. We present X-ray diffraction and PDF analysis of X-ray total scattering data that indicate that the crystal structure is unequivocally orthorhombic (Pnma).

Binary solvent mixtures of alkanethiols and 1,2-ethylenediamine have the ability to readily dissolve metals, metal chalcogenides, and metal oxides under ambient conditions to enable the facile solution processing of semiconductor inks; however, there is little information regarding the chemical identity of the resulting solutes. Herein, we examine the molecular solute formed after dissolution of Sn, SnO, and SnS in a binary solvent mixture comprised of 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT) and 1,2-ethylenediamine (en). Using a combination of solution (119)Sn NMR and Raman spectroscopies, bis(1,2-ethanedithiolate)tin(II) was identified as the likely molecular solute present after the dissolution of Sn, SnO, and SnS in EDT-en, despite the different bulk material compositions and oxidation states (Sn(0) and Sn(2+)). All three semiconductor inks can be converted to phase-pure, orthorhombic SnS after a mild annealing step (∼350 °C). This highlights the ability of the EDT-en solvent mixture to dissolve and convert a variety of low-cost precursors to SnS semiconductor material.

The translation of batch chemistries onto continuous flow platforms requires addressing the issues of consistent fluidic behaviour, channel fouling and high-throughput processing. Droplet microfluidic technologies reduce channel fouling and provide an improved level of control over heat and mass transfer to control reaction kinetics. However, in conventional geometries, the droplet size is sensitive to changes in flow rates. Here we report a three-dimensional droplet generating device that exhibits flow invariant behaviour and is robust to fluctuations in flow rate. In addition, the droplet generator is capable of producing droplet volumes spanning four orders of magnitude. We apply this device in a parallel network to synthesize platinum nanoparticles using an ionic liquid solvent, demonstrate reproducible synthesis after recycling the ionic liquid, and double the reaction yield compared with an analogous batch synthesis.

The ability to synthesize colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals in a well-controlled manner (i.e., with fine control over size, shape, size dispersion, and composition) has been mastered over the past 15 years. Much of this success stems from careful studies of precursor conversion and nanocrystal growth with respect to phosphine chalcogenide precursors for the synthesis of metal chalcogenide nanocrystals. Despite the high level of success that has been achieved with phosphine chalcogenides, there has been a longstanding interest in exploring alternate chalcogenide precursors because of issues associated with phosphine chalcogenide cost, purity, toxicity, etc. This has resulted in a large body of literature on the use of sulfur and selenium dissolved in octadecene or amines, thio- and selenoureas, and silyl chalcogenides as alternate chalcogenide precursors for metal chalcogenide nanocrystal synthesis. In this Account, emerging work on the use of diorganyl dichalcogenides (R-E-E-R, where E = S, Se, or Te and R = alkyl, allyl, benzyl, or aryl) as alternate chalcogenide precursors for the synthesis of metal chalcogenide nanocrystals is summarized. Among the benefits of these dichalcogenide synthons are the following: (i) they represent the first and only common precursor type that can function as chalcogen transfer reagents for each of the group VI elements (i.e., to make metal oxide, metal sulfide, metal selenide, and metal telluride nanocrystals); (ii) they possess relatively weak E-E bonds that can be readily cleaved under mild thermolytic or photolytic conditions; and (iii) the organic substituents can be tuned to affect the reactivity. These combined attributes have allowed dichalcogenide precursors to be employed for a wide range of metal chalcogenide nanocrystal syntheses, including those for In2S3, SnxGe1-xSe, SnTe, Cu2-xSySe1-y, ZnSe, CdS, CdSe, MoSe2, WSe2, BiSe, and CuFeS2. Interestingly, a number of metastable phases of compositionally complex semiconductors can be kinetically accessed through syntheses utilizing dichalcogenide precursors, likely as a result of their ability to convert at relatively low temperatures. These include the hexagonal wurtzite phases of CuInS2, CuInSe2, Cu2ZnSn(S1-xSex)4, and Cu2SnSe3 nanocrystals. The discovery of crystal phases on the nanoscale that do not exist in their bulk analogues is a developing area of nanocrystal chemistry, and dichalcogenides are proving to be a useful synthetic tool in this regard. The most recent application of dichalcogenide synthons for semiconductor nanocrystals is their use as precursors for surface ligands. While there is a rich history of using thiol ligands for semiconductor nanocrystals, the analogous selenol and tellurol ligands have not been studied, likely because of their oxidative instability. Dichalcogenides have proven useful in this regard, as they can be reduced in situ with diphenylphosphine to give the corresponding selenol or tellurol ligand that binds to the nanocrystal surface. This chemistry has been applied to the in situ synthesis and ligand binding of selenols to PbSe nanocrystals and both selenols and tellurols to CdSe nanocrystals. These initial studies have allowed the photophysics of these nanocrystal-ligand constructs to be investigated; in both cases, it appears that the selenol and tellurol ligands act as hole traps that quench the photoluminescence of the semiconductor nanocrystals.

A series of compositionally complex scheelite-structured nanocrystals of the formula A1-xAWO4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) have been prepared under benign synthesis conditions using the vapor diffusion sol-gel method. Discrete nanocrystals with sub-20 nm mean diameters were obtained after kinetically controlled hydrolysis and polycondensation at room temperature, followed by composition-dependent thermal aging at or below 60 °C. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data and Raman spectroscopy verified the synthesis of continuous and phase-pure nanocrystal solid solutions across the entire composition space for A1-xAWO4, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. Elemental analysis by X-ray photoelectron and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopies demonstrated excellent agreement between the nominal and experimentally determined elemental stoichiometries, while energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy illustrated good spatial elemental homogeneity within these nanocrystals synthesized under benign conditions.

A thiol-amine solvent mixture is used to dissolve ten inexpensive bulk oxides (Cu2O, ZnO, GeO2, As2O3, Ag2O, CdO, SnO, Sb2O3, PbO, and Bi2O3) under ambient conditions. Dissolved oxides can be converted to the corresponding sulfides using the thiol as the sulfur source, while selenides and tellurides can be accessed upon mixing with a stoichiometric amount of dissolved selenium or tellurium. The practicality of this method is illustrated by solution depositing Sb2Se3 thin films from compound inks of dissolved Sb2O3 and selenium that give high photoelectrochemical current response. The direct band gap of the resulting material can be tuned from 1.2-1.6 eV by modulating the ink formulation to give compositionally controlled Sb2Se(3-x)S(x) alloys., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Nickel(II) oxide (NiO) is an important wide gap p-type semiconductor used as a hole transport material for dye sensitized solar cells and as a water oxidation electrocatalyst. Here we demonstrate that nanocrystals of the material have increased p-type character and improved photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution from water in the presence of methanol as sacrificial electron donor. NiO nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrolysis of Ni(II) nitrate under hydrothermal conditions followed by calcination in air. The crystals have the rock salt structure type and adopt a plate-like morphology (50-90 nm × 10-15 nm). Diffuse reflectance absorbance spectra indicate a band gap of 3.45 eV, similar to bulk NiO. Photoelectrochemical measurements were performed at neutral pH with methylviologen as electron acceptor, revealing photo-onset potentials (Fermi energies) of 0.2 and 0.05 eV (NHE) for nanoscale and bulk NiO, respectively. Nano-NiO and NiO-Pt composites obtained by photodepositon of H2PtCl6 catalyze hydrogen evolution from aqueous methanol at rates of 0.8 and 4.5 μmol H2 h(-1), respectively, compared to 0.5 and 2.1 μmol H2 h(-1) for bulk-NiO and NiO-Pt (20 mg of catalyst, 300 W Xe lamp). Surface photovoltage spectroscopy of NiO and NiO-Pt films on Au substrates indicate a metal Pt-NiO junction with 30 mV photovoltage that promotes carrier separation. The increased photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical performance of nano-NiO is due to improved minority carrier extraction and increased p-type character, as deduced from Mott-Schottky plots, optical absorbance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data.
