5. One-step fabrication of high refractive index inorganic nanostructures.

Abstract

Direct printing of spin-on functional films is probably the most efficient method to develop low-cost novel photonic nanodevices, such as diffraction gratings, planar waveguides, nano- lasers, and antireflective coatings. For these applications high refractive index transparent materials are demanded; however, this class of materials generally requires inorganic oxides, well known for their hardness, typical of ceramic materials, and so incompatible with a soft character of printable resins. Herein, inorganic high refractive index TiO2 micro- and nano- structures, with unusual depth up to 600 nm and aspect ratio larger than 5, are obtained by combining thermal nanoimprint lithography (NIL) with UV curing. To achieve printed patterns, a hybrid organic-inorganic spin-on film is deposited at low-temperature by sol–gel processing. Two distinct bottom-up synthetic approaches are used, called in situ and ex situ, using titanium isopropoxide (90%) or TiO2 anatase nanoparticles (70%), respectively, and adding a silica sol modified by organic moieties. The two syntheses were optimized to obtain, after patterning by thermal imprint, amorphous or crystalline titania crack-free micro- and nano- patterns for in situ and ex situ, respectively. The further UV irradiation converts imprinted films to totally inorganic patterns, through the titania photocatalytic effect, allowing refractive indexes up to 1.82 at 632 nm to be achieved. This novel strategy of combining thermal imprint with UV exposure allows inorganic deep patterns to be fabricated without a calcination step, which is generally needed for inorganic resists processing. Eventually, a thermal treatment only at 300 °C can be applied to achieve a final refractive index of 2 at 632 nm. Highlights: A simple straightforward one-step surface patterning process by NIL technology of high refractive index TiO2 systems is proposed. The hybrid nature of films combines the required intrinsic properties of inorganic titania and the simple processing of organic resists. Micro- and nano-inorganic structures up to 600 nm deep and refractive index up to 2 at 632 nm are achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of two simple Ruthenium(II) complexes of the type [Ru(X^N)2(4,4′-dicarboxybipyridine)]+ (with X[dbnd]C, X^N[dbnd]benzoquinolinate, 1; with X[dbnd]N, X^N[dbnd]2-pyridyl tetrazolate, 2) and the exploitation of a new carbon doped anatase TiO2 paste in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) photoanode are described. In particular, glucose (C6H12O6) is used as a new chemical eco-friendly C-dopant during the doping process of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The proper combination of Ru(II) sensitizers and C-doped titania can afford efficient DSSC photoanodes. All the relevant photovoltaic parameters have been determined.

Abstract

(3-Glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) derived hybrid organic-inorganic materials have been obtained by a new multistep nonhydrolytic/hydrolytic synthesis. The new synthesis has been achieved using titanium(IV) chloride instead of titanium alkoxides to catalyze the epoxy ring opening in the organically modified alkoxide. The precursor sols were studied by multinuclear solution-state magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and electrospray ionization (ESI) experiments. The derived powdered gels were characterized by multinuclear solid-state magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) experiments. All these results show that epoxy ring opening is achieved at low temperature and within short reaction times. Interestingly, several reactions occur simultaneously and are involved in the early polymerization process, leading to fast catalyst deactivation in solution, chlorination of GPTMS organic groups, and titanium dispersion inside precursor sols. Despite a rather complex reaction pathway, this method can be used to prepare transparent hybrid organic-inorganic materials, whose properties can satisfy the requirements for photonic applications.

48. Investigation of Glass-Like Sol-Gel Coatings for Corrosion Protection of Stainless Steel Against Liquid and Gaseous Attack

Abstract

Glass-like sol-gel coatings have been investigated as corrosion protective coatings on stainless steel. Magnesium- and borosilicate coatings with thickness of about 100-700 nm and methyl-modified SiO2 coatings with a thickness of about 2 μm were deposited on stainless steel plates by dip-coating. The coatings were densified between 400°C and 500°C in different atmospheres (N2, air) for 1 h. The corrosion protection against gaseous attack was investigated by accelerated corrosion tests at 800°C in air for 1 h. A corrosion protection factor was calculated from the relation Fe/Fe2O3, determined by XRD on the surface of coated and uncoated samples. Methyl-modified SiO2 coatings showed a protection factor, which was 2 orders of magnitude higher than for the other coatings. Electrochemical investigations were performed on samples submerged in a NaCl solution for 200 h. The corrosion propagation, polarization resistance and impedance vector were measured. For accelerated corrosion tests, polarization intensity curves were determined for high potentials of up to 1 V. Again excellent results were obtained for the methyl-modified SiO2 coatings, which remained passive for 200 h. Results of the salt spray corrosion test, however, showed no corrosion protection by the sol-gel coatings. After 2000 h in the salt spray chamber the steel was corroded and the coatings peeled off. It is concluded that for the further development of these coatings an improved interfacial passivation will be required.
