Machine learning has emerged as a potent computational tool for expediting research and development in solid oxide fuel cell electrodes. The effective application of machine learning for performance prediction requires transforming electrode microstructure into a format compatible with artificial neural networks. Input data may range from a comprehensive digital material representation of the electrode to a selected set of microstructural parameters. The chosen representation significantly influences the performance and results of the network. Here, we show a novel approach utilizing persistence representation derived from computational topology. Using 500 microstructures and current-voltage characteristics obtained with 3D first-principles simulations, we have prepared an artificial neural network model that can replicate current-voltage characteristics of unseen microstructures based on their persistent image representation. The artificial neural network can accurately predict the polarization curve of solid oxide fuel cell electrodes. The presented method incorporates complex microstructural information from the digital material representation while requiring substantially less computational resources (preprocessing and prediction time approximately 1 min) compared to our high-fidelity simulations (simulation time approximately 1 hour) to obtain a single current-potential characteristic for one microstructure., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Energy and AI

Numerical models of the ocean and ice sheets are crucial for understanding and simulating the impact of greenhouse gases on the global climate. Oceanic processes affect phenomena such as hurricanes, extreme precipitation, and droughts. Ocean models rely on subgrid-scale parameterizations that require calibration and often significantly affect model skill. When model sensitivities to parameters can be computed by using approaches such as automatic differentiation, they can be used for such calibration toward reducing the misfit between model output and data. Because the SOMA model code is challenging to differentiate, we have created neural network-based surrogates for estimating the sensitivity of the ocean model to model parameters. We first generated perturbed parameter ensemble data for an idealized ocean model and trained three surrogate neural network models. The neural surrogates accurately predicted the one-step forward ocean dynamics, of which we then computed the parametric sensitivity.

Despite the continued research and progress in building secure systems, Android applications continue to be ridden with vulnerabilities, necessitating effective detection methods. Current strategies involving static and dynamic analysis tools come with limitations like overwhelming number of false positives and limited scope of analysis which make either difficult to adopt. Over the past years, machine learning based approaches have been extensively explored for vulnerability detection, but its real-world applicability is constrained by data requirements and feature engineering challenges. Large Language Models (LLMs), with their vast parameters, have shown tremendous potential in understanding semnatics in human as well as programming languages. We dive into the efficacy of LLMs for detecting vulnerabilities in the context of Android security. We focus on building an AI-driven workflow to assist developers in identifying and rectifying vulnerabilities. Our experiments show that LLMs outperform our expectations in finding issues within applications correctly flagging insecure apps in 91.67% of cases in the Ghera benchmark. We use inferences from our experiments towards building a robust and actionable vulnerability detection system and demonstrate its effectiveness. Modeling is crucial to understanding the effect of greenhouse gases, warming, and ice sheet melting on the ocean. At the same time, ocean processes affect phenomena such as hurricanes and droughts. Parameters in the models that cannot be physically measured have a significant effect on the model output. For an idealized ocean model, we generated perturbed parameter ensemble data and trained surrogate neural network models. The neural surrogates accurately predicted the one-step forward dynamics, of which we then computed the parametric sensitivity.

Uncovering microstructure evolution mechanisms that accompany the long-term operation of solid oxide fuel cells is a fundamental challenge in designing a more durable energy system for the future. To date, the study of fuel cell stack degradation has focused mainly on electrochemical performance and, more rarely, on averaged microstructural parameters. Here we show an alternative approach in which an evolution of three-dimensional microstructural features is studied using electron tomography coupled with topological data analysis. The latter produces persistent images of microstructure before and after long-term operation of electrodes. This paper presents the first scientific application of local time-stepping (LTS) schemes in the Model for Prediction Across Scales-Ocean (MPAS-O). We use LTS schemes in a single-layer, global ocean model that predicts the storm surge around the eastern coast of the United States during Hurricane Sandy. The variable-resolution meshes used are of unprecedentedly high resolution in MPAS-O, containing cells as small as 125 meters wide in Delaware Bay. It is shown that a particular, third-order LTS scheme (LTS3) produces sea-surface height (SSH) solutions that are of comparable quality to solutions produced by the classical four-stage, fourth-order Runge-Kutta method (RK4) with a uniform time step on the same meshes. Furthermore, LTS3 is up to 35% faster in the best cases, showing that LTS schemes are viable for use in MPAS-O with the added benefit of substantially less computational cost. The results of these performance experiments inform us of the requirements for efficient mesh design for LTS schemes. In particular, we see that for LTS to be efficient on a given mesh, it is important to have enough cells using the coarse time-step relative to those using the fine time-step, typically at least 1:5.

While charge carrier dynamics and thermal management are both keys to the operational efficiency and stability for energy-related devices, experimental techniques that can simultaneously characterize both properties are still lacking. In this paper, we use laser-induced transient grating (TG) spectroscopy to characterize thin films of the archetypal organic semiconductor regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and its blends with the electron acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) on glass substrates. While the thermal response is determined to be dominated by the substrates, we show that the recombination dynamics of photocarriers in the organic semiconductor thin films occur on a similar timescale and can be separated from the thermal response. Our measurements indicate that the photocarrier dynamics are determined by multiple recombination processes and our extracted recombination rates are in good agreement with previous reports using other techniques. We further apply TG spectroscopy to characterize another conjugated polymer and a molecular fluorescent material to demonstrate its general applicability. Context. EE Cep is one of few eclipsing binary systems with a dark, dusty disk around an invisible object similar to {\epsilon} Aur. The system is characterized by grey and asymmetric eclipses every 5.6 yr, with a significant variation in their photometric depth, ranging from ~ 0 m .5 to ~ 2 m .0. Aims. The main aim of the observational campaign of the EE Cep eclipse in 2014 was to test the model of disk precession (Galan et al. 2012). We expected that this eclipse would be one of the deepest with a depth of ~ 2 m .0. Methods. We collected multicolor observations from almost 30 instruments located in Europe and North America. This photometric data covers 243 nights during and around the eclipse. We also analyse the low- and high-resolution spectra from several instruments. Results. The eclipse was shallow with a depth of 0 m .71 in V-band. The multicolor photometry illustrates small color changes during the eclipse with a total amplitude of order ~ +0 m . 15 in B-I color index. The linear ephemeris for this system is updated by including new times of minima, measured from the three most recent eclipses at epochs E = 9, 10 and 11. New spectroscopic observations were acquired, covering orbital phases around the eclipse, which were not observed in the past and increased the data sample, filling some gaps and giving a better insight into the evolution of the H {\alpha} and NaI spectral line profiles during the primary eclipse. Conclusions. The eclipse of EE Cep in 2014 was shallower than expected 0 m .71 instead of ~ 2 m . 0. One of the most common and universal problems in science is to investigate a function. The prediction can be made by an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) or a mathematical model. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. Mathematical models were sought as more trustworthy as their prediction is based on the laws of physics expressed in the form of mathematical equations. However, the majority of existing mathematical models include different empirical parameters, and both approaches inherit inevitable experimental errors. At the same time, the approximation of neural networks can reproduce the solution extremely well if fed with a sufficient amount of data. The difference is that an ANN requires big data to build its accurate approximation whereas a typical mathematical model needs just several data points to estimate an empirical constant. Therefore, the common problem that developer meet is the inaccuracy of mathematical models and artificial neural network. An another common challenge is the computational complexity of the mathematical models, or lack of data for a sufficient precision of the Artificial Neural Networks. In the presented paper those problems are addressed using the integration of a mathematical model with an artificial neural network. In the presented analysis, an ANN predicts just a part of the mathematical model and its weights and biases are adjusted based on the output of the mathematical model. The performance of Integrated Mathematical modeling - Artificial Neural Network (IMANN) is compared to a Dense Neural Network (DNN) with the use of the benchmarking functions. The obtained calculation results indicate that such an approach could lead to an increase of precision as well as limiting the data-set required for learning.

Asteroseismology offers the possibility of probing stellar interiors and testing evolutionary and seismic models. Precise photometry and spectroscopy obtained during multi-site campaigns on young open clusters allows discovering rich samples of pulsating stars and using them in a simultaneous seismic modelling called ensemble asteroseismology. The aim of this study is to obtain the age of the open cluster NGC 6910 by means of ensemble asteroseismology of the early-type pulsating members, to derive their stellar parameters, and to classify the excited modes. We used time-series analysis, performed photometric and spectroscopic mode identification, and calculated grids of evolutionary and seismic models to apply the procedure of ensemble asteroseismology for nine pulsating members of NGC 6910. With two iterations of the procedure of ensemble asteroseismology applied to nine pulsating stars we derived an age of 10.6$^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$ Myr for NGC 6910. Of the nine pulsating stars examined in the paper, eight are $\beta$ Cep stars, including three that are hybrid $\beta$ Cep and slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) pulsators, and one is an SPB star. Interestingly, the least massive $\beta$ Cep star, NGC 6910-38, has a mass of about 5.6 M$_\odot$. The present theory does not predict unstable $p$ modes in B-type stars with such a low mass. The $g$ modes with relatively high frequencies ($>3.5$ d$^{-1}$), observed in three members of the cluster, are also stable according to seismic modelling. Both findings pose a challenge for theoretical calculations and prompt a revision of the opacities. The procedure of ensemble asteroseismology was found to be successful for NGC 6910 and $\chi$ Per on the basis of pulsating B-type stars and can therefore be applied to other young open clusters that are rich in such stars., Comment: 22 pages, 24 figures. In the paper a mathematical model of the PEN structure (positive electrode - electrolyte - negative electrode) of the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is analyzed. It is proved that classical formulation of the problem leads inevitably to locally unphysical effects related to negative values of the activation overpotential. Moreover, the active layers' thicknesses are shown to be components of solution and cannot be predefined in an arbitrary way. A modified mathematical formulation of the problem is proposed which includes this novelty alongside an amended definition of the activation overpotential. A dedicated computational scheme is developed for the cathode sub-problem. The accuracy of computations is investigated by means of a newly introduced analytical benchmark example. The numerical results obtained for LSCF cathode are used to discuss certain aspects of the modified formulation and the active layer thickness. The new modelling approach is validated by comparison with experimental data.

NGC 6910 is the northern hemisphere open cluster known to be rich in $\beta$ Cephei-type stars. Using four-season photometry obtained in Bia\l k\'ow (Poland) and Xinglong (China) observatories, we performed variability survey of NGC 6910. As the result, we found over 100 variable stars in the field of the cluster, including many stars showing variability due to pulsations and binarity. We report a strongly temperature dependent luminescence Stokes shift in the electronic spectra of both hybrid and inorganic lead-bromide perovskite single crystals. This behavior stands in stark contrast to that exhibited by more conventional crystalline semiconductors. We correlate the electronic spectra with the anti-Stokes and Stokes Raman vibrational spectra. Dielectric solvation theories, originally developed for excited molecules dissolved in polar liquids, reproduce our experimental observations. Our approach, which invokes a classical Debye-like relaxation process, captures the dielectric response originating from an anharmonic LO phonon at about 20 meV (160 cm-1) in the lead-bromide framework. We reconcile the liquid-like picture with more standard solid-state theories of the Stokes shift in crystalline semiconductors.

Electrochemical intercalation is a powerful method for tuning the electronic properties of layered solids. In this work, we report an electro-chemical strategy to controllably intercalate lithium ions into a series of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures built by sandwiching graphene between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We demonstrate that encapsulating graphene with h-BN eliminates parasitic surface side reactions while simultaneously creating a new hetero-interface that permits intercalation between the atomically thin layers. To monitor the electrochemical process, we employ the Hall effect to precisely monitor the intercalation reaction. We also simultaneously probe the spectroscopic and electrical transport properties of the resulting intercalation compounds at different stages of intercalation. We achieve the highest carrier density $> 5 \times 10^{13} cm^{-2}$ with mobility $> 10^3 cm^2/(Vs)$ in the most heavily intercalated samples, where Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations are observed at low temperatures. These results set the stage for further studies that employ intercalation in modifying properties of vdW heterostructures.

Organic-inorganic coupling in the hybrid lead-halide perovskite is a central issue in rationalizing the outstanding photovoltaic performance of these emerging materials. Here we compare and contrast the evolution of structure and dynamics of the hybrid CH3NH3PbBr3 and the inorganic CsPbBr3 lead-halide perovskites with temperature, using Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Results reveal a stark contrast between their order-disorder transitions, abrupt for the hybrid whereas smooth for the inorganic perovskite. X-ray diffraction observes an intermediate incommensurate phase between the ordered and the disordered phases in CH3NH3PbBr3. Low-frequency Raman scattering captures the appearance of a sharp soft mode in the incommensurate phase, ascribed to the theoretically predicted amplitudon mode. Our work highlights the interaction between the structural dynamics of organic cation CH3NH3+ and the lead-halide framework, and unravels the competition between tendencies of the organic and inorganic moieties to minimize energy in the incommensurate phase of the hybrid perovskite structure.

The ability to control the size of the electronic bandgap is an integral part of solid-state technology. Atomically-thin two-dimensional crystals offer a new approach for tuning the energies of the electronic states based on the interplay between the environmental sensitivity and unusual strength of the Coulomb interaction in these materials. By engineering the surrounding dielectric environment, we are able to tune the electronic bandgap in monolayers of WS2 and WSe2 by hundreds of meV. We exploit this behavior to present an in-plane dielectric heterostructure with a spatially dependent bandgap, illustrating the feasibility of our approach for the creation of lateral junctions with nanoscale resolution. This successful demonstration of bandgap engineering based on the non-invasive modification of the Coulomb interaction should enable the design of a new class of atomically thin devices to advance the limits of size and functionality for solid-state technologies.

Hybrid lead-halide perovskites have emerged as an excellent class of photovoltaic materials. Recent reports suggest that the organic molecular cation is responsible for local polar fluctuations that inhibit carrier recombination. We combine low frequency Raman scattering with first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) to study the fundamental nature of these local polar fluctuations. Our observations of a strong central peak in both hybrid (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$) and all-inorganic (CsPbBr$_3$) lead-halide perovskites show that anharmonic, local polar fluctuations are intrinsic to the general lead-halide perovskite structure, and not unique to the dipolar organic cation. MD simulations show that head-to-head Cs motion coupled to Br face expansion, on a few hundred femtosecond time scale, drives the local polar fluctuations in CsPbBr$_3$.

We present a study of photometric properties of very crowded stellar fields toward the Galactic Bulge. We performed a search for pulsating stars among thousands of variable stars from the OGLE-II survey supplementing the variability study with photometric measurements in four Johnson-Cousins $UBVI_{\rm C}$ passbands. Using these data, we analysed the properties of objects located at different distances and, whenever possible, classified them., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure. We report a comprehensive study of the two-phonon inter-valley (2D) Raman mode in graphene monolayers, motivated by recent reports of asymmetric 2D-mode lineshapes in freestanding graphene. For photon energies in the range $1.53 \rm eV - 2.71 \rm eV$, the 2D-mode Raman response of freestanding samples appears as bimodal, in stark contrast with the Lorentzian approximation that is commonly used for supported monolayers. The transition between the freestanding and supported cases is mimicked by electrostatically doping freestanding graphene at carrier densities above $2\times 10^{11} \rm cm^{-2}$. This result quantitatively demonstrates that low levels of charging can obscure the intrinsically bimodal 2D-mode lineshape of monolayer graphene, which can be utilized as a signature of a quasi-neutral sample. In pristine freestanding graphene, we observe a broadening of the 2D-mode feature with decreasing photon energy that cannot be rationalized using a simple one-dimensional model based on resonant \textit{inner} and \textit{outer} processes. This indicates that phonon wavevectors away from the high-symmetry lines of the Brillouin zone must contribute to the 2D-mode, so that a full two-dimensional calculation is required to properly describe multiphonon-resonant Raman processes.

Nanometer-scale graphene objects are attracting much research interest because of newly emerging properties originating from quantum confinement effects. We present Raman spectroscopy studies of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) which are known to have nonzero electronic bandgap. GNRs of width ranging from 15 nm to 100 nm have been prepared by e-beam lithographic patterning of mechanically exfoliated graphene followed by oxygen plasma etching. Raman spectra of narrow GNRs can be characterized by upshifted G band and prominent disorder-related D band originating from scattering at ribbon edges. The D-to-G band intensity ratio generally increases with decreasing ribbon width. However, its decrease for width < 25 nm, partly attributed to amorphization at the edges, provides a valuable experimental estimate on D mode relaxation length of <5 nm. The upshift in the G band of the narrowest GNRs can be attributed to confinement effect or chemical doping by functional groups on the GNR edges. Notably, GNRs are much more susceptible to photothermal effects resulting in reversible hole doping caused by atmospheric oxygen than bulk graphene sheets. Finally we show that the 2D band is still a reliable marker in determining the number of layers of GNRs despite its significant broadening for very narrow GNRs., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the temperature distributions of Joule self-heated graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with a spatial resolution finer than 100 nm by scanning thermal microscopy (SThM). The SThM probe is calibrated using the Raman G mode Stokes/anti-Stokes intensity ratio as a function of electric power applied to the GNR devices. From a spatial map of the temperature distribution, heat dissipation and transport pathways are investigated. Using micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, we study the relationship between structural distortion and electrical hole doping of graphene on a silicon dioxide substrate. The observed upshift of the Raman G band represents charge doping and not compressive strain. Two independent factors control the doping: (1) the degree of graphene coupling to the substrate, and (2) exposure to oxygen and moisture. Thermal annealing induces a pronounced structural distortion due to close coupling to SiO2 and activates the ability of diatomic oxygen to accept charge from graphene. Gas flow experiments show that dry oxygen reversibly dopes graphene; doping becomes stronger and more irreversible in the presence of moisture and over long periods of time. We propose that oxygen molecular anions are stabilized by water solvation and electrostatic binding to the silicon dioxide surface., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Few-layer graphene (FLG) has been predicted to exist in various crystallographic stacking sequences, which can strongly influence the electronic properties of FLG. We demonstrate an accurate and efficient method to characterize stacking order in FLG using the distinctive features of the Raman 2D-mode. Raman imaging allows us to visualize directly the spatial distribution of Bernal (ABA) and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking in tri- and tetra-layer graphene. We find that 15% of exfoliated graphene tri- and tetra-layers is comprised of micron-sized domains of rhombohedral stacking, rather than of usual Bernal stacking. V2O3 nanocrystals can be synthesized through hydrothermal reduction of VO(OH)2 using hydrazine as a reducing agent. Addition of different ligands to the reaction produces nanoparticles, nanorods and nanoplatelets of different sizes. Small nanoparticles synthesized in this manner show suppression of the magnetic phase transition to lower temperatures. Using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, it is determined that the volume fraction of the high-temperature phase, characterized by a rhombohedral structure and paramagnetism, gradually declines with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the sharp transition observed in bulk V2O3., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) of single and few-layer thickness was exfoliated on SiO2/Si substrate and characterized by Raman spectroscopy. The number of S-Mo-S layers of the samples was independently determined by contact-mode atomic-force microscopy. Two Raman modes, E12g and A1g, exhibited sensitive thickness dependence, with the frequency of the former decreasing and that of the latter increasing with thickness. The results provide a convenient and reliable means for determining layer thickness with atomic-level precision. The opposite direction of the frequency shifts, which cannot be explained solely by van der Waals interlayer coupling, is attributed to Coulombic interactions and possible stacking-induced changes of the intralayer bonding. We examine the intrinsic energy dissipation steps in electrically biased graphene channels. By combining in-situ measurements of the spontaneous optical emission with a Raman spectroscopy study of the graphene sample under conditions of current flow, we obtain independent information on the energy distribution of the electrons and phonons. The electrons and holes contributing to light emission are found to obey a thermal distribution, with temperatures in excess of 1500 K in the regime of current saturation. The zone-center optical phonons are also highly excited and are found to be in equilibrium with the electrons. For a given optical phonon temperature, the anharmonic downshift of the Raman G-mode is smaller than expected under equilibrium conditions, suggesting that the electrons and high-energy optical phonons are not fully equilibrated with all of the phonon modes.

Energy transfer from photoexcited zero-dimensional systems to metallic systems plays a prominent role in modern day materials science. A situation of particular interest concerns the interaction between a photoexcited dipole and an atomically thin metal. The recent discovery of graphene layers permits investigation of this phenomenon. Here we report a study of fluorescence from individual CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals in contact with single- and few-layer graphene sheets. The rate of energy transfer is determined from the strong quenching of the nanocrystal fluorescence. For single-layer graphene, we find a rate of ~ 4ns-1, in agreement with a model based on the dipole approximation and a tight-binding description of graphene. This rate increases significantly with the number of graphene layers, before approaching the bulk limit. Our study quantifies energy transfer to and fluorescence quenching by graphene, critical properties for novel applications in photovoltaic devices and as a molecular ruler.

We examine the excitonic nature of high-lying optical transitions in single-walled carbon nanotubes by means of Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy. A careful analysis of the principal transitions of individual semiconducting and metallic nanotubes reveals that in both cases the lineshape is consistent with an excitonic model, but not one of free-carriers. For semiconducting species, side-bands are observed at ~200 meV above the third and fourth optical transitions. These features are ascribed to exciton-phonon bound states. Such side-bands are not apparent for metallic nanotubes,as expected from the reduced strength of excitonic interactions in these systems.

We report variation of the work function for single and bi-layer graphene devices measured by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). Using the electric field effect, the work function of graphene can be adjusted as the gate voltage tunes the Fermi level across the charge neutrality point. Upon biasing the device, the surface potential map obtained by SKPM provides a reliable way to measure the contact resistance of individual electrodes contacting graphene., Comment: 11 pages and 8 figures including supplementary information, to appear in Nano Letters

The properties of pristine, free-standing graphene monolayers prepared by mechanical exfoliation of graphite are investigated. The graphene monolayers, suspended over open trenches, are examined by means of spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy of the G-, D-, and 2D-phonon modes. The G-mode phonons exhibit reduced energies (1580 cm-1) and increased widths (14 cm-1) compared to the response of graphene monolayers supported on the SiO2 covered substrate. From analysis of the G-mode Raman spectra, we deduce that the free-standing graphene monolayers are essentially undoped, with an upper bound of 2x10^11 cm-2 for the residual carrier concentration. On the supported regions, significantly higher and spatially inhomogeneous doping is observed. The free-standing graphene monolayers show little local disorder, based on the very weak Raman D-mode response. The two-phonon 2D mode of the free-standing graphene monolayers is downshifted in frequency compared to that of the supported region of the samples and exhibits a narrowed, positively skewed line shape.

We report the chemical reaction of single-layer graphene with hydrogen atoms, generated in situ by electron-induced dissociation of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ). Hydrogenation, forming sp3 C-H functionality on the basal plane of graphene, proceeds at a higher rate for single than for double layers, demonstrating the enhanced chemical reactivity of single sheet graphene. The net H atom sticking probability on single layers at 300 K is at least 0.03, which exceeds that of double layers by at least a factor of 15. Chemisorbed hydrogen atoms, which give rise to a prominent Raman D band, can be detached by thermal annealing at 100~200 degrees C. The resulting dehydrogenated graphene is "activated" when photothermally heated it reversibly binds ambient oxygen, leading to hole doping of the graphene. Patterned graphene shows substantial potential for applications in future molecular-scale integrated electronics. Environmental effects are a critical issue in a single layer material where every atom is on the surface. Especially intriguing is the variety of rich chemical interactions shown by molecular oxygen with aromatic molecules. We find that O2 etching kinetics vary strongly with the number of graphene layers in the sample. Three-layer-thick samples show etching similar to bulk natural graphite. Single-layer graphene reacts faster and shows random etch pits in contrast to natural graphite where nucleation occurs at point defects. In addition, basal plane oxygen species strongly hole dope graphene, with a Fermi level shift of ~0.5 eV. These oxygen species partially desorb in an Ar gas flow, or under irradiation by far UV light, and readsorb again in an O2 atmosphere at room temperature. The influence of the pressure of a chemically inert carrier-gas on the nucleation rate is one of the biggest puzzles in the research of gas-liquid nucleation. Different experiments can show a positive effect, a negative effect, or no effect at all. The same experiment may show both trends for the same substance depending on temperature, or for different substances at the same temperature. We show how this ambiguous effect naturally arises from the competition of two contributions: nonisothermal effects and pressure-volume work. Our model clarifies seemingly contradictory experimental results and quantifies the variation of the nucleation ability of a substance in the presence of an ambient gas. We report the existence of broad and weakly asymmetric features in the high-energy (G) Raman modes of freely suspended metallic carbon nanotubes of defined chiral index. A significant variation in peak width (from 12 cm-1 to 110 cm-1) is observed as a function of the nanotube's chiral structure. When the nanotubes are electrostatically gated, the peak widths decrease. The broadness of the Raman features is understood as the consequence of coupling of the phonon to electron-hole pairs, the strength of which varies with the nanotube chiral index and the position of the Fermi energy., Comment: 13 pages; submitted to Phys. We present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of single-layer graphene crystals examined under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The samples, with lateral dimensions on the micron scale, were prepared on a silicon dioxide surface by direct exfoliation of single crystal graphite. The single-layer films were identified using Raman spectroscopy. Topographic images of single-layer samples display the honeycomb structure expected for the full hexagonal symmetry of an isolated graphene monolayer. The absence of observable defects in the STM images is indicative of the high quality of these films. Crystals comprised of a few layers of graphene were also examined. They exhibited dramatically different STM topography, displaying the reduced three-fold symmetry characteristic of the surface of bulk graphite., Comment: Accepted to PNAS
