1. Professional Collaboration in a Lesson Study with University Mathematics Professors

Abstract

The article analyzes professional collaboration in a lesson study involving university mathematics professors, with the objective of contributing to professional development. The research was guided by the question, What principles promoted professional collaboration among university mathematics professors participating in a lesson study? The research focused on a lesson study involving university professors of mathematics and mathematics education over twelve weekly meetings of two hours each. The empirical material included the researchers' field notes and the transcripts of the recordings of the lesson study sessions. A qualitative analysis, based on content analysis, revealed that collaboration involved: "professional sharing" and "decision-making." The research shows that by fostering collaboration the lesson study mobilized different principles of teaching professionalism, such as knowledge that is basic to teaching, values and ways of conducting university teaching, a social and moral commitment to teaching, and teaching autonomy, contributing to the professional development of higher education professors.

Abstract

Robots rely on visual relocalization to estimate their pose from camera images when they lose track. One of the challenges in visual relocalization is repetitive structures in the operation environment of the robot. This calls for probabilistic methods that support multiple hypotheses for robot's pose. We propose such a probabilistic method to predict the posterior distribution of camera poses given an observed image. Our proposed training strategy results in a generative model of camera poses given an image, which can be used to draw samples from the pose posterior distribution. Our method is streamlined and well-founded in theory and outperforms existing methods on localization in presence of ambiguities., Comment: Accepted at IROS 2024

Abstract

Deep learning-based medical image segmentation and surface mesh generation typically involve a sequential pipeline from image to segmentation to meshes, often requiring large training datasets while making limited use of prior geometric knowledge. This may lead to topological inconsistencies and suboptimal performance in low-data regimes. To address these challenges, we propose a data-efficient deep learning method for direct 3D anatomical object surface meshing using geometric priors. Our approach employs a multi-resolution graph neural network that operates on a prior geometric template which is deformed to fit object boundaries of interest. We show how different templates may be used for the different surface meshing targets, and introduce a novel masked autoencoder pretraining strategy for 3D spherical data. The proposed method outperforms nnUNet in a one-shot setting for segmentation of the pericardium, left ventricle (LV) cavity and the LV myocardium. Similarly, the method outperforms other lumen segmentation operating on multi-planar reformatted images. Results further indicate that mesh quality is on par with or improves upon marching cubes post-processing of voxel mask predictions, while remaining flexible in the choice of mesh triangulation prior, thus paving the way for more accurate and topologically consistent 3D medical object surface meshing., Comment: Submitted to Medical Image Analysis

Abstract

This paper presents NFDIcore 2.0, an ontology compliant with the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) designed to represent the diverse research communities of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. NFDIcore ensures the interoperability across various research disciplines, thereby facilitating cross-domain research. Each domain's individual requirements are addressed through specific ontology modules. This paper discusses lessons learned during the ontology development and mapping process, supported by practical validation through use cases in diverse research domains. The originality of NFDIcore lies in its adherence to BFO, the use of SWRL rules for efficient knowledge discovery, and its modular, extensible design tailored to meet the needs of heterogeneous research domains.

5. DEC at the Intersection: Actualizing Division for Early Childhood's Racial Equity Point of View within Our Resource System

Abstract

The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) collaborates with the Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) community and allied partners to create resources (such as publications like Young Exceptional Children [YEC] and The Journal of Early Intervention [JEI] and products like The DEC Recommended Practices and Learning Decks) that reflect collective expertise. These resources address field needs and support DEC's mission of guiding early intervention and special education services for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with or at-risk for disabilities and their families. To advance equity, DEC members are committed to studying, discussing, and applying DEC's Racial Equity Point of View (RE POV; Division for Early Childhood [DEC], 2023) to all its resources and the system that produces them. To create transformative change within DEC's resources, this article includes reflections on how DEC's RE POV can inspire new associated practices and policies to foster a more equitable and inclusive resource system. Also included are reflective questions for readers, DEC members, and non-members alike, to build their critical consciousness related to the need to disrupt structural racism and ableism and (re)build DEC's resource system into one that prioritizes equity.

We extend the formalism for the low-energy analysis of the $\gamma p\rightarrow K^{+}\pi\Sigma$ photoproduction reaction to include the strangeness $S=-1$ meson-baryon p-wave final-state interaction with total angular momentum $J=\frac{3}{2}\,$. Abstract

This article introduces the analytical approach of practice mapping, using vector embeddings of network actions and interactions to map commonalities and disjunctures in the practices of social media users, as a framework for methodological advancement beyond the limitations of conventional network analysis and visualisation. In particular, the methodological framework we outline here has the potential to incorporate multiple distinct modes of interaction into a single practice map, can be further enriched with account-level attributes such as information gleaned from textual analysis, profile information, available demographic details, and other features, and can be applied even to a cross-platform analysis of communicative patterns and practices. The article presents practice mapping as an analytical framework and outlines its key methodological considerations. Given its prominence in past social media research, we draw on examples and data from the platform formerly known as Twitter in order to enable experienced scholars to translate their approaches to a practice mapping paradigm more easily, but point out how data from other platforms may be used in equivalent ways in practice mapping studies. We illustrate the utility of the approach by applying it to a dataset where the application of conventional network analysis and visualisation approaches has produced few meaningful insights.

9. Single Image Estimation of Cell Migration Direction by Deep Circular Regression

Abstract

In this paper we study the problem of estimating the migration direction of cells based on a single image. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one related work that uses a classification CNN for four classes (quadrants). This approach does not allow detailed directional resolution. We solve the single image estimation problem using deep circular regression with special attention to cycle-sensitive methods. On two databases we achieve an average accuracy of $\sim$17 degrees, which is a significant improvement over the previous work.

10. Connected Network Model for the Mechanical Loss of Amorphous Materials

Abstract

Mechanical loss in amorphous solids at low frequencies is commonly attributed to thermally activated transitions of isolated two-level systems (TLS) that come in resonance with a mechanical wave. Using atomistic modeling of amorphous silicon, we observe instead that the inherent structures that constitute the TLS form a sparsely connected network with thermodynamic pathways between states. An analytically tractable theory for mechanical loss of the full network is derived from a nonequilibrium thermodynamic perspective. We show that the connected network model predicts mechanical loss with distinct temperature and frequency profiles when compared to the isolated TLS model. This not only calls into question the validity of the TLS model, but also gives us many new avenues and properties to analyze for the targeted design of low mechanical loss materials for applications in gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

12. Harvesting room-temperature plasticity in ceramics by mechanically seeded dislocations

Abstract

The quest for room-temperature ductile ceramics has been repeatedly fueled by hopes for large-scale applications but so far has been not successful. Recent demonstrations of enhanced functional properties in ceramics through judicious dislocation imprint, however, have been sparking renewed interest in dislocation plasticity in brittle ceramics. Here, we propose a facile approach using room-temperature mechanically seeded mobile dislocations with a density of ~10^14/m^2 to significantly improve the room-temperature plasticity of ceramics with a large plastic strain beyond ~30%. The seeded mobile dislocations trigger profuse dislocation multiplication via cross slip and motion. Hence, they offer an avenue to suppress brittle fracture and harvest plasticity in ceramics without any additional high-temperature process. We employ both in situ nano-/micromechanical deformation and ex situ bulk deformation to bridge the length scales. This finding tackles the pressing bottleneck of dislocation engineering in ceramics for achieving ductile ceramics and harvesting both versatile mechanical and functional properties.

13. Estimating the Extent of Selective Reporting: An Application to Economics

Abstract

Using a sample of 70,399 published p-values from 192 meta-analyses, we empirically estimate the counterfactual distribution of p-values in the absence of any biases. Comparing observed p-values with counterfactually expected p-values allows us to estimate how many p-values are published as being statistically significant when they should have been published as non-significant. We estimate the extent of selectively reported p-values to range between 57.7% and 71.9% of the significant p-values. The counterfactual p-value distribution also allows us to assess shifts of p-values along the entire distribution of published p-values, revealing that particularly very small p-values (p < 0.001) are unexpectedly abundant in the published literature. Subsample analysis suggests that the extent of selective reporting is reduced in research fields that use experimental designs, analyze microeconomics research questions, and have at least some adequately powered studies.

14. Neural Graph Mapping for Dense SLAM with Efficient Loop Closure

Abstract

Existing neural field-based SLAM methods typically employ a single monolithic field as their scene representation. This prevents efficient incorporation of loop closure constraints and limits scalability. To address these shortcomings, we propose a neural mapping framework which anchors lightweight neural fields to the pose graph of a sparse visual SLAM system. Our approach shows the ability to integrate large-scale loop closures, while limiting necessary reintegration. Furthermore, we verify the scalability of our approach by demonstrating successful building-scale mapping taking multiple loop closures into account during the optimization, and show that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches on large scenes in terms of quality and runtime. Abstract

Cognitive agent abstractions can help to engineer intelligent systems across mobile devices. On smartphones, the data obtained from onboard sensors can give valuable insights into the user's current situation. Unfortunately, today's cognitive agent frameworks cannot cope well with the challenging characteristics of sensor data. Sensor data is located on a low abstraction level and the individual data elements are not meaningful when observed in isolation. In contrast, cognitive agents operate on high-level percepts and lack the means to effectively detect complex spatio-temporal patterns in sequences of multiple percepts. In this paper, we present a stream-based perception approach that enables the agents to perceive meaningful situations in low-level sensor data streams. We present a crowdshipping case study where autonomous, self-interested agents collaborate to deliver parcels to their destinations. We show how situations derived from smartphone sensor data can trigger and guide auctions, which the agents use to reach agreements. Experiments with real smartphone data demonstrate the benefits of stream-based agent perception.

Abstract

Mobile crowdsourcing refers to systems where the completion of tasks necessarily requires physical movement of crowdworkers in an on-demand workforce. Evidence suggests that in such systems, tasks often get assigned to crowdworkers who struggle to complete those tasks successfully, resulting in high failure rates and low service quality. A promising solution to ensure higher quality of service is to continuously adapt the assignment and respond to failure-causing events by transferring tasks to better-suited workers who use different routes or vehicles. However, implementing task transfers in mobile crowdsourcing is difficult because workers are autonomous and may reject transfer requests. Moreover, task outcomes are uncertain and need to be predicted. In this paper, we propose different mechanisms to achieve outcome prediction and task coordination in mobile crowdsourcing. First, we analyze different data stream learning approaches for the prediction of task outcomes. Second, based on the suggested prediction model, we propose and evaluate two different approaches for task coordination with different degrees of autonomy: an opportunistic approach for crowdshipping with collaborative, but non-autonomous workers, and a market-based model with autonomous workers for crowdsensing.

In parcel delivery, the "last mile" from the parcel hub to the customer is costly, especially for time-sensitive delivery tasks that have to be completed within hours after arrival. Recently, crowdshipping has attracted increased attention as a new alternative to traditional delivery modes. In crowdshipping, private citizens ("the crowd") perform short detours in their daily lives to contribute to parcel delivery in exchange for small incentives. However, achieving desirable crowd behavior is challenging as the crowd is highly dynamic and consists of autonomous, self-interested individuals. Leveraging crowdshipping for time-sensitive deliveries remains an open challenge. In this paper, we present an agent-based approach to on-time parcel delivery with crowds. Our system performs data stream processing on the couriers' smartphone sensor data to predict delivery delays. Whenever a delay is predicted, the system attempts to forge an agreement for transferring the parcel from the current deliverer to a more promising courier nearby. Our experiments show that through accurate delay predictions and purposeful task transfers many delays can be prevented that would occur without our approach.

Abstract

Autonomous agents rely on sensor data to construct representations of their environments, essential for predicting future events and planning their actions. However, sensor measurements suffer from limited range, occlusions, and sensor noise. These challenges become more evident in highly dynamic environments. This work proposes a probabilistic framework to jointly infer which parts of an environment are statically and which parts are dynamically occupied. We formulate the problem as a Bayesian network and introduce minimal assumptions that significantly reduce the complexity of the problem. Based on those, we derive Transitional Grid Maps (TGMs), an efficient analytical solution. Using real data, we demonstrate how this approach produces better maps by keeping track of both static and dynamic elements and, as a side effect, can help improve existing SLAM algorithms.

28. Footprint of Publication Selection Bias on Meta-Analyses in Medicine, Environmental Sciences, Psychology, and Economics

Abstract

Publication selection bias undermines the systematic accumulation of evidence. To assess the extent of this problem, we survey over 68,000 meta-analyses containing over 700,000 effect size estimates from medicine (67,386/597,699), environmental sciences (199/12,707), psychology (605/23,563), and economics (327/91,421). Our results indicate that meta-analyses in economics are the most severely contaminated by publication selection bias, closely followed by meta-analyses in environmental sciences and psychology, whereas meta-analyses in medicine are contaminated the least. After adjusting for publication selection bias, the median probability of the presence of an effect decreased from 99.9% to 29.7% in economics, from 98.9% to 55.7% in psychology, from 99.8% to 70.7% in environmental sciences, and from 38.0% to 29.7% in medicine. The median absolute effect sizes (in terms of standardized mean differences) decreased from d = 0.20 to d = 0.07 in economics, from d = 0.37 to d = 0.26 in psychology, from d = 0.62 to d = 0.43 in environmental sciences, and from d = 0.24 to d = 0.13 in medicine.

Abstract

The maximal degree of monomials belonging to the unique minimal system of monomial generators of the canonical module $\omega(K[{\mathcal P}])$ of the toric ring $K[{\mathcal P}]$ defined by a lattice polytope ${\mathcal P}$ will be studied. It is shown that if ${\mathcal P}$ possesses an interior lattice point, then the maximal degree is at most ${\rm dim} {\mathcal P} - 1$, and that this bound is the best possible in general.

47. Acceptability and feasibility of policy implementation strategies for taxes earmarked for behavioral health services.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: This studys aims are to: (1) Compare the acceptability and feasibility of five types of implementation strategies that could be deployed to increase the reach of evidence-based practices (EBPs) with revenue from policies that earmark taxes for behavioral health services, and (2) Illustrate how definitions of implementation strategies and measures of acceptability and feasibility can be used in policy-focused implementation science research. METHODS: Web-based surveys of public agency and community organization professionals involved with earmarked tax policy implementation were completed in 2022-2023 (N = 211, response rate = 24.9%). Respondents rated the acceptability and feasibility of five types of implementation strategies (dissemination, implementation process, integration, capacity-building, and scale-up). Aggregate acceptability and feasibility scores were calculated for each type of strategy (scoring range 4-20). Analyses of variance compared scores across strategies and between organizational actor types. FINDINGS: For acceptability, capacity-building strategies had the highest rating (M = 16.3, SD = 3.0), significantly higher than each of the four other strategies, p ≤ . 004), and scale-up strategies had the lowest rating (M = 15.6). For feasibility, dissemination strategies had the highest rating (M = 15.3, significantly higher than three of the other strategies, p ≤ .002) and scale-up strategies had the lowest rating (M = 14.4). CONCLUSIONS: Capacity-building and dissemination strategies may be well-received and readily deployed by policy implementers to support EBPs implementation with revenue from taxes earmarked for behavioral health services. Adapting definitions of implementation strategies for policy-focused topics, and applying established measures of acceptability and feasibility to these strategies, demonstrates utility as an approach to advance research on policy-focused implementation strategies.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Optimal venous thromboembolism (VTE) enoxaparin prophylaxis dosing remains elusive. Weight-based (WB) dosing safely increases anti-factor Xa levels without the need for routine monitoring but it is unclear if it leads to lower VTE risk. We hypothesized that WB dosing would decrease VTE risk compared with standard fixed dosing (SFD). METHODS: Patients from the prospective, observational CLOTT-1 registry receiving prophylactic enoxaparin (n=5539) were categorized as WB (0.45-0.55 mg/kg two times per day) or SFD (30 mg two times per day, 40 mg once a day). Multivariate logistic regression was used to generate a predicted probability of VTE for WB and SFD patients. RESULTS: Of 4360 patients analyzed, 1065 (24.4%) were WB and 3295 (75.6%) were SFD. WB patients were younger, female, more severely injured, and underwent major operation or major venous repair at a higher rate than individuals in the SFD group. Obesity was more common among the SFD group. Unadjusted VTE rates were comparable (WB 3.1% vs. SFD 3.9%; p=0.221). Abstract

Abstract Reducing animal product consumption is a necessary action to mitigate climate change and other environmental issues. We tested and compared the effectiveness of an individual and a social app-based 30-day challenge in reducing animal product consumption. Through a pre-registered field randomized controlled trial (n = 1213), we find both conditions reduced animal product consumption by 16–17% compared to the control group, with a lasting effect only for the social treatment (encouragement to involve family and friends) 3 months after the intervention. The effects were largest for meat consumption and those who consumed meat at the baseline. Additionally, associated greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 21–24% and are still significantly reduced 3 months after both interventions, with a larger effect for the social treatment. Our findings suggest that app-based animal product-free challenges are a cost-effective way (~€13–25 per tCO2-eq assuming a 1-year lasting effect) to translate intentions into lasting dietary change, especially when involving the social environment and targeting meat eaters.
