Understanding the habitat use and behavior of commercially exploited species throughout ontogeny is useful for devising effective management and conservation strategies. Differences in habitat use can often be exploited to separate target and non-target species, and determinations of home range size can inform the proper scale of conservation actions. In tropical tuna purse seine fisheries in the Pacific Ocean, juvenile silky sharks, Carcharhinus falciformis, comprise a large proportion of the total elasmobranch bycatch. There is now growing recognition of declines in silky shark populations and the need for international collaboration in conservation efforts. Yet, very little is known about the movement behavior or habitat use for this species. In this study, movement behavior of juvenile silky sharks was investigated using pop-up satellite archival tags placed on sharks that were captured during chartered research cruises on a commercial tuna purse seine fishing vessel using drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in the western and central Pacific Ocean and on sharks captured using pelagic longlines in the eastern tropical Pacific. Analysis of horizontal and vertical movement behavior revealed silky sharks spend nearly 100% of their time in the shallow, warm waters of the mixed layer. Juvenile silky shark depth and thermal preferences overlapped with the preferred habitat of the primary target tuna species, indicating vulnerability to capture in purse seine and shallow-set longline fisheries throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific Ocean where temperatures range between 24 and 29 °C. Reconstruction of horizontal movements showed dispersal between adjacent national jurisdictions and international waters, highlighting the need for international collaborations in the implementation of conservation measures.

Background Characterization of prediagnostic Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and early prediction of subsequent development are critical for preventive interventions, risk stratification and understanding of disease pathology. This study aims to characterize the role of the prediagnostic period in PD and, using selected features from this period as novel interception points, construct a prediction model to accelerate the diagnosis in a real-world setting. Methods We constructed two sets of machine learning models: a retrospective approach highlighting exposures up to 5 years prior to PD diagnosis, and an alternative model that prospectively predicted future PD diagnosis from all individuals at their first diagnosis of a gait or tremor disorder, these being features that appeared to represent the initiation of a differential diagnostic window. Results We found many novel features captured by the retrospective models; however, the high accuracy was primarily driven from surrogate diagnoses for PD, such as gait and tremor disorders, suggesting the presence of a distinctive differential diagnostic period when the clinician already suspected PD. The model utilizing a gait/tremor diagnosis as the interception point, achieved a validation AUC of 0.874 with potential time compression to a future PD diagnosis of more than 300 days. Comparisons of predictive diagnoses between the prospective and prediagnostic cohorts suggest the presence of distinctive trajectories of PD progression based on comorbidity profiles. Conclusions Overall, our machine learning approach allows for both guiding clinical decisions such as the initiation of neuroprotective interventions and importantly, the possibility of earlier diagnosis for clinical trials for disease modifying therapies.

WOS:000679270900003; International audience; Estimating bycatch is essential for monitoring the ecological impacts of a fishery in order to set management and mitigation priorities. Purse seine vessels targeting tropical tunas incidentally catch pelagic sharks (mainly silky and oceanic whitetip sharks), which are brought onboard and can be observed on the upper and lower decks. Currently, single onboard observers can only be efficiently stationed on one of the two decks, and thus often rely on information provided by the crew to complement their bycatch estimations. In this study, we used dedicated scientists strategically positioned during fishing sets in order to establish a reference count of captured sharks during conventional commercial fishing trips. We then assessed the accuracy of the counts made by (i) single observers onboard during the same fishing trips in the Pacific Ocean (where observers' main duty is to estimate catch of target species and bycatch estimation is of a lower priority) and the Atlantic Ocean (where observers' focus is on bycatch) and (ii) Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) in the Indian Ocean. A total of 74 fishing sets conducted during four purse seine fishing trips revealed that shark counts were underestimated for 50%-100% of the sets, with the mean shark count underestimation, at the fishing trip level, ranging from 9% to 40% (onboard observers) and 65% for EMS. Given the importance of monitoring populations of vulnerable species, we strongly encourage specific studies during which the complementary counts of two onboard observers are used simultaneously to assess the accuracy of various EMS configurations, bearing in mind that single onboard observers appear to underestimate the number of captured sharks.

Delineating the stock structure of highly-mobile, wide-ranging fishes subject to exploitation is a challenging task, yet one that is fundamental to optimal fisheries management. A case in point are stocks of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) in the Pacific Ocean, which support important commercial, artisanal, subsistence, and recreational fisheries, and contribute roughly 70 % of global commercial tuna catches. Although some spatial and temporal structuring is recognised within these stocks, growing evidence from a range of approaches suggests that the stock structure of each tuna species is more complex than is currently assumed in both stock assessment and climate change models, and in management regimes. In a move towards improving understanding of the stock structure of skipjack, yellowfin, bigeye and South Pacific albacore tunas in the Pacific Ocean, an international workshop was held in Nouméa, New Caledonia, in October 2018 to review knowledge about their movement and stock structure in the region, define and discuss the main knowledge gaps and uncertainties concerning their stock structure, and develop biological sampling approaches to support the provision of this information. Here, we synthesise the discussions of this latter component. For each tuna species, we identify several general sampling considerations needed to reduce uncertainty, including i) the need for broadscale sampling in space, ideally covering each species’ distribution, targeting adults in spawning condition and adopting a phased approach; ii) the need for temporally-repeated sampling of the same geographical areas to assess stability in observed patterns over time; iii) the need to resolve patterns in spatial dynamics, such as those resulting from movements associated with the seasonal extensions of poleward flowing currents, from underlying stock structure, iv) the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach to stock identification, and v) the need for careful planning of logistics and coordination of sampling efforts across agencies. Finally, we present potential sampling designs that could be adopted to help overcome uncertainties around the initial identification of stocks and the provenance, mixing and proportional contributions of individuals in harvested assemblages, as well as how these uncertainties could be accounted for in fisheries management via the use of management strategy evaluation., Funding support for the workshop was provided by Conservation International as part of the GEF-funded, World Bank-implemented Ocean Partnerships for sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation (OPP), a sub-project of the Common Oceans ABNJ Program led by UN-FAO.

The EDITION trials in type 2 diabetes demonstrated comparable glycaemic control with less nocturnal and anytime (24-hour) hypoglycaemia for insulin glargine 300 U/mL (Gla-300) versus glargine 100 U/mL (Gla-100). However, the predefined nocturnal window (0:00-5:59 AM) may not be the most relevant for clinical practice. This post-hoc analysis compared expansions of the predefined nocturnal interval during basal insulin treatment without prandial insulin. Patient-level, 6-month data, pooled from the EDITION 2 and 3 trials and the EDITION JP 2 trial (N = 1922, basal insulin only) were analysed. Accompanying hypoglycaemia during treatment with Gla-300 was compared to that during treatment with Gla-100, using predefined (0:00-5:59 AM) and expanded (10:00 PM-5:59 AM, 0:00-7:59 AM, 10:00 PM to pre-breakfast SMPG) windows. Confirmed (≤3.9 mmol/L [≤70 mg/dL]) or severe hypoglycaemic events were reported most frequently between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Windows expanded beyond 6:00 AM included more events than other windows. The percentage of participants with at least one event was lower with Gla-300 than Gla-100 in all windows examined. Expanding the nocturnal interval allows better assessment of the risk of hypoglycaemia associated with basal insulin. The risk of nocturnal hypoglycaemia was consistently lower with Gla-300 versus Gla-100 using all four windows.

The suite of species taken by artisanal fishers targeting tuna often includes species caught in the larger industrial tuna fisheries, leading to concerns that industrial fisheries may reduce local fish availability and consequently impact upon artisanal catch rates. This study provides supporting evidence that industrial purse-seine fisheries may impact upon artisanal and subsistence fishers. A tagged population of skipjack and yellowfin tuna of known size was monitored through time and the probability of recapture was used as a measure of interaction with the industrial purse-seine fisheries. The probability of recapture was positively associated with areas where relative purse-seine fishing effort was higher. The results indicate that skipjack and yellowfin tuna may have longer residency times in nearshore habitats than in open ocean habitats. Lower recapture probabilities in areas currently closed to purse-seine fishing provided empirical evidence that area closures for industrial fisheries may assist with the management of artisanal fisheries. Finally the results suggest that the proximity to industrial purse-seine fishing may also be an important component for decision makers when planning and evaluating the performance of artisanal fisheries in the western Pacific region.

8217 days of data downloaded from 47 archival tags, recovered from bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) 51–134 cm in length ( x ¯ = 86.9 c m ) , 0.87–3.44 years of age ( x ¯ = 1.89 years ) at liberty from 36 to 851 days ( x ¯ = 183 days ) in the equatorial central Pacific Ocean, are evaluated herein. Analyses of depth and temperature records resulted in the classification of three daily behavior types: characteristic, associative (associated with floating objects), and other. For three defined length classes, 54–79.9 cm, 80–99.9 cm, and 100–134 cm, when exhibiting characteristic behavior, the proportions of time and average durations of events were 45.3% ( x ¯ = 5.1 days ) , 62.6% ( x ¯ = 8.5 days ) , 79.2% ( x ¯ = 17.5 days ) , and the average daytime depths and temperatures were 284 m and 12.6 °C, 305 m and 12.7 °C, and 312 m and 12.1 °C, respectively. For the same three length classes, when exhibiting associative behavior, the proportions of time and average durations of events were 9.5% ( x ¯ = 1.9 days ) , 4.8% ( x ¯ = 1.9 days ) , and 6.0% ( x ¯ = 1.8 days ) , and the average daytime depths and temperatures were 101 m and 23.2 °C, 105 m and 23.1 °C, and 74 m and 22.3 °C, respectively. There is a significant positive correlation between the proportion of time fish exhibits characteristic behavior and fish length, and significant negative correlations between the proportion of time bigeye tuna exhibit associative and other behavior with fish length. Behavior and habitat preferences of bigeye tuna should be considered for standardizing catch-per-unit of effort (CPUE) data from both longline and purse-seine fisheries targeting tropical tunas in the Pacific, in an effort to provide more reliable estimates of relative abundance.

Long-term collection of data and samples appears critical to contribute to our understanding of the impacts of fisheries and climate change on the marine ecosystems, and for the implementation of management measures for sustainable use of the resources. In the western and central Pacific Ocean, the source of 50% of the worldwide tuna catches, several tools have been implemented to monitor the fisheries and the tuna pelagic ecosystem. Since the 1990’s fisheries observers of 15 Pacific Island countries, which are now operating under a regional standardised framework, collect data on fishing effort, catch and bycatch to monitor, among others, changes in biodiversity. This network of 800 observers also collect biological samples (stomachs, muscles, otoliths…) that constitute a biological tissue bank of pelagic fish with more than 95000 samples available to scientists for biological studies. Since the 1970’s tuna tagging programmes have been implemented to monitor the fishing pressure and tuna movements and growth. Fishing-independent data have also been collected during scientific cruises to monitor the lower levels of the trophic web. These multiple initiatives at the scale of half of the Pacific represent a unique opportunity to understand the impact of fisheries and climate change on the tuna ecosystem.

Bigeye tuna are targeted by longliners and caught incidentally by purse seiners in the tropical Pacific. The spawning biomass has been reduced significantly from unexploited levels, necessitating management action in both the western and central Pacific and eastern Pacific. Stock assessments of bigeye tuna rely primarily on data from the fisheries; however, the vulnerability of the stock to these gears, and its spatiotemporal variability, remains poorly understood, requiring simplifying assumptions to be made in the stock assessments. We analyzed the vertical behavior of 65 bigeye tuna (estimated size range 48–130 cm fork length) tracked with archival tags in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and the Coral Sea, and found that fish depth shows a clear gradient with longitude, becoming progressively shallower from west to east. Additive mixed models were used to explore potential relationships of the depth behavior during both day and night to several life history and environmental variables. Swimming depths were most clearly related to the thermocline depth, the intensity of temperature stratification of the water column and fish size. The model predictions suggest strong relationships between fish depth and fisheries catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) both spatially and temporally. In particular, we propose that El Nino-Southern Oscillation-driven changes in oceanography have a major influence on fish depth and longline CPUE, which could have substantial implications for stock assessments where longline CPUE is used as an index of abundance.

Belgium is a member of the European Pain Federation (EFIC). The national pain society works to support the needs of patients with pain, including those with acute pain, chronic pain, cancer pain, pain in later life, and at the end of life. In this chapter of European Pain Management we describe first the geography and history of the country as it relates to the recent demographics of the population, the prevalence of pain and needs for pain management, the pain workforce and its organization, the system pain specialists work within, and specific issues that have been tackled to improve the delivery of pain care. An example of recent innovation is also described.

Mirror therapy is more and more often suggested for the treatment of particular neuropathic pain syndromes, in complement to rehabilitation. Its mechanism of action is poorly elucidated and several non-exclusive hypotheses have been suggested: improvement of sensorimotor congruence, pain modulation by vision, mirror neurons activation, reduction of kinesiophobia, attentional effects, changes in cortical excitability. Even if case reports have given encouraging results, the few controlled studies have given more mixed results. More studies are necessary to better test this treatment, assess its modes of action and test the hypothesis suggesting that particular patients subgroups might be more susceptible to this treatment than others. Despite these questions, a few practical recommendations can be done.

The data from tag-recapture experiments, which are used to help understand animal behaviour and dynamics, and to provide input data for population models such as stock assessments, are affected by mortality associated with tagging and by tag shedding. These processes introduce bias and uncertainty into parameters estimated in population models such as tuna stock assessments. The causes and magnitudes of tag shedding and post-release mortality in tuna tagging experiments are not well understood. We analysed data from tuna tagging experiments in the Western Pacific (330,000 releases) and Indian Oceans (168,000 releases) to investigate factors affecting post-release mortality and tag shedding. Tag return rates were modelled as functions of the tagger identity, tagger experience, tagging assistant, tagging station, treatment of the fish, use of oxytetracycline, tuna species, and size at release. The release event was included in models as a fixed effect, so that differences in recapture rate among release events did not affect other parameter estimates. We found differences in tag return rates among taggers and tagging assistants, with tagger experience, and between tagging stations. Substantially lower return rates were associated with some types of damage to fish and with internally implanted tags, and when oxytetracycline was injected. Return rates varied with tuna size and species. In the Western Pacific yellowfin and bigeye return rates were more affected by some covariates than were skipjack, while differences were not observed in the Indian Ocean, where sample sizes were smaller. Results suggest that tagging mortality may be quite high, and that more care and better recording of fish treatment would increase the reliability of assessment inputs. We provide new effective release numbers that have been adjusted to allow for estimated tagging mortality and tag shedding.

In the western and Central Pacific Ocean mark-recapture experiments have been an integral part of monitoring tuna stocks since the late 1970s. The data from tagging campaigns have been included in stock assessments since the 1980s and in integrated analyses since the late 1990s. Ensuring that tagging experiments are implemented in a manner that satisfies the incorporation of the data in stock assessment is important to maximize the return on investment. We review three large scale tuna experiments implemented in the western and central Pacific Ocean to synthesize the lessons learned so that future tagging programmes can save considerable time and money, and maximize the quantity and quality of the data needed to obtain more accurate and precise assessments of stock status. We highlight particular knowledge gaps that require further attention, and suggest some approaches, both technological and methodological, from which future studies could benefit in order to improve our understanding of tuna biology.

A total of 31,242 bigeye tuna was captured, tagged, and released, 30,793 with dart tags (DTs) and 449 with geolocating archival tags (ATs), in the equatorial central Pacific Ocean along the 140° W, 155° W, 170° W, and 180° meridians, during 2008 through 2012, of which 10,029 (32.1%) of the DTs and 74 (16.5%) of the ATs were returned. A subset of high-confidence filtered DT data was retained for 5807 fish at liberty for 30 d or more, for evaluating linear displacements from release to recapture positions. For the filtered DT data, days at liberty ranged from 30 to 1701 d (median = 187 d). Linear displacements ranged from 1 to 5372 nautical miles (M) (median = 936 M), with 71% eastward and 29% westward, and 95% within 3614 M of their release positions. The data indicate significant differences in the linear displacements by release locations, days at liberty, and fish length at release. An unscented Kalman filter model with sea-surface temperature measurements integrated (UKFsst) was used to process 48 AT data sets from bigeye tuna at liberty for 30 d or longer, to obtain most probable tracks, improved estimates of geographic positions, and movement parameters. The 95% volume contours surrounding the position estimates, along the most probable tracks from bigeye tuna releases along the 140° W, 155° W, 170° W, and 180° meridians show substantial overlap. For the pooled AT data sets, the median parameter estimates from the UKFsst model for errors in longitude ( σ x ) and latitude ( σ y ) were 0.52° and 1.75°, for directed eastward and northward movements ( u and v ) were −2.01 M/d and −1.41 M/d, and for dispersive movement ( D ) was 496.7 M 2 /d. The linear displacements and most probable tracks obtained from these tagging data demonstrate constrained latitudinal dispersion, some regional fidelity, some extensive eastward longitudinal dispersion, and substantial mixing of bigeye tuna between release longitudes. The amount of mixing of bigeye tuna among these release areas in the equatorial central Pacific Ocean, with those in adjacent areas of the equatorial eastern and western Pacific Ocean, is dependent on distances between areas, with, in general, the greatest mixing occurring between the areas that are closest to one another.

International audience; Global population genetic structure of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is still poorly understood despite its relevance for the tuna fishery industry. Low levels of genetic differentiation among oceans speak in favour of the existence of a single panmictic population worldwide of this highly migratory fish. However, recent studies indicated genetic structuring at a much smaller geographic scales than previously considered, pointing out that YFT population genetic structure has not been properly assessed so far. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time, the utility of 2b-RAD genotyping technique for investigating population genetic diversity and differentiation in high gene-flow species. Running de novo pipeline in Stacks, a total of 6772 high-quality genome-wide SNPs were identified across Atlantic, Indian and Pacific population samples representing all major distribution areas. Tuna fisheries catch over three million tonnes of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) each year, the majority of which come from purse-seine vessels targeting fish associated with man-made fish aggregating devices (FADs). A significant challenge for fisheries management is to maximize the efficiency of skipjack tuna catches whilst minimizing the bycatch of small and immature bigeye (Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin (T. albacares) tuna, for which long-term sustainability is uncertain in 75% of the world's stocks. To better manage the issues common with this fishing method, an improved understanding of tuna behaviour around FADs is necessary. We probabilistically classified the vertical behavioural patterns of 50 bigeye and 35 yellowfin tuna (mean fork length 72cm and 70cm, respectively) electronically tagged throughout the western and central Pacific Ocean into shallow and deep states, using a state-space modelling approach. The occurrence of surface-association behaviours, defined as an individual remaining in a shallow state for 24-hours, was examined in relation to known capture events and FAD density. In general, surface-association events for both species were short and lasted on average less than three days, although events as long as 28 days were observed, and were more common in yellowfin when in archipelagic waters. Events were longest immediately following tagging in 62% and 17% of bigeye and yellowfin, respectively. Surface-association behaviour was not generally estimated just prior to recapture, being either non-existent or shorter than two days for 85% of bigeye and 74% of yellowfin. Current management measures in purse-seine tuna fisheries involve periodic or spatial closures for FAD use. If the chief benefit to purse-seine fishers of surface-association around floating objects is in locating schools in horizontal space at short-term time-scales, rather than holding fish near the surface for extended periods, controlling the number of sets made on FADs should be explored further as an additional management tool.

International audience; Estimates of trophic position are used to validate ecosystem models and understand food web structure. A consumer's trophic position can be estimated by the stable nitrogen isotope values (delta N-15) of its tissue, once the baseline isotopic variability has been accounted for. Our study established the first data-driven baseline delta N-15 isoscape for the Western and Central Pacific Ocean using particulate organic matter. Bulk delta N-15 analysis on 1039 muscle tissue of bigeye and yellowfin tuna were conducted together with amino acid compound-specific delta N-15 analysis (AA-CSIA) on a subset of 21 samples. Both particulate organic matter and tuna bulk delta N-15 values varied by more than 10 parts per thousand across the study area. Fine-scaled trophic position maps were constructed and revealed higher tuna trophic position (by similar to 1) in the southern latitudes compared to the equator. AA-CSIA confirmed these spatial patterns for bigeye and, to a lesser extent, yellowfin tuna. Using generalized additive models, spatial variations of tuna trophic positions were mainly related to the depth of the 20 degrees C isotherm, a proxy for the thermocline behavior, with higher tuna trophic position estimates at greater thermocline depths. We hypothesized that a deeper thermocline would increase tuna vertical habitat and access to mesopelagic prey of higher trophic position. Archival tagging data further suggested that the vertical habitat of bigeye tuna was deeper in the southern latitudes than at the equator. These results suggest the importance of thermocline depth in influencing tropical tuna diet, which affects their vulnerability to fisheries, and may be altered by climate change.

Information on the age of individuals is often required for models assessing the status of stocks. Techniques used to estimate age of tuna have varied across species and agencies, precluding meta-analyses of age and growth. We compared age estimates obtained from commonly used ageing techniques for four important tuna species: bigeye tuna, yellowfin tuna, southern bluefin tuna, and albacore tuna. Estimates of age from counts of annual increments in transverse-sectioned otoliths were generally higher than those from counts of daily increments in transverse and longitudinal sections for all species, particularly for fish older than two years. However, annual counts produced younger estimates, on average, relative to daily counts for bigeye and yellowfin tuna younger than one year. Estimates derived from daily increments in longitudinal and transverse sections were generally similar, although longitudinal sections produced relatively older age estimates for individuals older than two years. A linear or non-linear increase in the magnitude of differences between ageing methods was the best-approximating model in all cases except when comparing daily-increment counts between transverse and longitudinal otolith sections for southern bluefin tuna. These observations are consistent with a narrowing of daily increments with increasing age, resulting in underestimates of age relative to those derived from annual increments. We conclude that (i) daily increments are unsuitable for ageing individuals over two years, especially for southern bluefin and albacore, (ii) longitudinal sections are more precise and produce older age estimates than transverse sections for daily-age estimates, (iii) there are considerable differences in these trends between species, likely dependent on longevity, and (iv) parameter estimates and/or conclusions based on meta-analyses using age data derived from different ageing methods are likely confounded with methodological biases. This result demonstrates that greater effort is required to provide consistent, validated methods for routine age determination to support the assessment and management of these valuable populations.

(Arecaceae) is described as a new genus from north-western Madagascar, with a single species T. spectabilis J.Dransf. & Rakotoarinivo, sp. nov.Tahina is included within tribe Chuniophoeniceae of subfamily Coryphoideae, based on the strictly tubular imbricate rachilla bracts, the flowers grouped in cincinni with tubular bracteoles, and the stalk-like base to the corolla. This position is corroborated by evidence from plastid DNA. Lamina anatomy is discussed in detail, and similarities with and differences from the other members of Chuniophoeniceae are discussed. Analysis of complex time-series data from ecological system study requires quantitative tools for objective description and classification. These tools must take into account largely ignored problems of bias in manual classification, autocorrelation, and noise. Here we describe a method using existing estimation techniques for multivariate-normal hidden Markov models (HMMs) to develop such a classification. We use high-resolution behavioral data from bio-loggers attached to free-roaming pelagic tuna as an example. Observed patterns are assumed to be generated by an unseen Markov process that switches between several multivariate-normal distributions. Our approach is assessed in two parts. The first uses simulation experiments, from which the ability of the HMM to estimate known parameter values is examined using artificial time series of data consistent with hypotheses about pelagic predator foraging ecology. The second is the application to time series of continuous vertical movement data from yellowfin and bigeye tuna taken from tuna tagging experiments. These data were compressed into summary metrics capturing the variation of patterns in diving behavior and formed into a multivariate time series used to estimate a HMM. Each observation was associated with covariate information incorporating the effect of day and night on behavioral switching. Known parameter values were well recovered by the HMMs in our simulation experiments, resulting in mean correct classification rates of 90-97%, although some variance-covariance parameters were estimated less accurately. HMMs with two distinct behavioral states were selected for every time series of real tuna data, predicting a shallow warm state, which was similar across all individuals, and a deep colder state, which was more variable. Marked diurnal behavioral switching was predicted, consistent with many previous empirical studies on tuna. HMMs provide easily interpretable models for the objective classification of many different types of noisy autocorrelated data, as typically found across a range of ecological systems. Summarizing time-series data into a multivariate assemblage of dimensions relevant to the desired classification provides a means to examine these data in an appropriate behavioral space. We discuss how outputs of these models can be applied to bio-logging and other imperfect behavioral data, providing easily interpretable models for hypothesis testing.

The pharmacokinetics and safety of the ketolide telithromycin were evaluated in two separate studies after single and repeat oral dosing in patients with varying degrees of renal impairment and in subjects with normal renal function. The single-dose study was an open-label, nonrandomized, parallel-group design in which all 40 patients received a single oral dose of telithromycin 800 mg. The repeat-dose study was an open-label study with a randomized, balanced, incomplete three-block treatment crossover design. In this study, each of the 36 patients received two of three telithromycin regimens (400, 600, or 800 mg once daily for 5 days), with a washout period of/= 7 days between treatments. Telithromycin was well tolerated. Adverse events were generally mild in severity, and no serious drug-related adverse events were reported. Plasma exposure to telithromycin (C(max), AUC) showed a tendency to increase with increasing severity of renal impairment in both studies. In patients with severe renal impairment (CL(CR)30 mL/min) receiving telithromycin 800 mg in the repeat-dose study, C(max,ss) and AUC((0-24 h)ss) increased 1.5-fold (p0.05) to 2.0-fold (p = 0.0005), respectively, compared with healthy subjects. The percentage of dose excreted in urine and renal clearance (CL(R)) of telithromycin was found to decrease significantly with increasing severity of renal impairment in both studies, and CL(R) was found to be independent of telithromycin dose in the repeat-dose study. In conclusion, telithromycin dosage adjustment is not necessary in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (CL(CR)/= 30 mL/min). In patients with severe renal impairment (CL(CR)30 mL/min), dosage adjustment could be considered.

Methods Five days of telithromycin (800 mg once daily) was compared with 10 days of cefuroxime axetil (250 mg twice daily) in subjects (n = 593) with acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis (ABMS). Bacteriologic sampling was accomplished by sinus puncture or nasal endoscopy. The primary efficacy variable was clinical outcome at the posttherapy/test-of-cure evaluation in clinically evaluable patients. Results Clinical cure was achieved in 85.2% of telithromycin patients and 82.0% of cefuroxime axetil patients (difference in proportions, 3.2%; 95% confidence interval, 27.1–13.4%). Satisfactory bacteriologic response rates were comparable. Treatment-emergent adverse events for both drugs were mild or moderate. The most frequently reported treatment-emergent adverse events were nausea and diarrhea. Conclusion Once-daily telithromycin for 5 days was equivalent in efficacy to twice-daily cefuroxime axetil for 10 days in patients with ABMS. Telithromycin is a suitable option for short-course therapy of ABMS.

Telithromycin, the first ketolide antibacterial, was developed for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory tract infections. This multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled study assessed the efficacy and safety of 800 mg, once-daily telithromycin in adults with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Based on bacteriologic eradication rates, telithromycin was shown to be effective for the treatment of CAP. Telithromycin was generally well tolerated, with gastro-intestinal adverse events observed most frequently (diarrhea 4/218 [1.8%], nausea 4/218 [1.8%], vomiting 5/218 [2.3%]). These results were consistent with those observed in randomized, active-controlled studies.

Archival and acoustic tagging were carried out in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the western Pacific Ocean during 2006–07 to investigate the vertical behavior of tropical tuna found in association with large arrays of anchored FADs. Industrialized purse-seine fishing on anchored FADs has existed in the PNG EEZ for more than a decade. Archival tags were implanted in bigeye (n = 40; length 40–90 cm FL) and yellowfin (214; length 42–126 cm FL) tuna in the Bismarck and Solomon Seas. Acoustic tags were released in the same areas in 195 tuna (10 bigeye, 116 yellowfin, 69 skipjack). In addition, 27 tuna (eight bigeye, 19 yellowfin) received both an archival and an acoustic tag. Archival tag data from 32 recaptures were categorized into the three distinct vertical behavior modes for bigeye, and the three distinct modes for yellowfin that have been described in the published literature. The depth distribution for each of the categories was then calculated to examine potential vulnerability to industrial purse-seine capture in this region. A region-specific analysis was considered important as oceanographic conditions in this region are distinctly different to the conditions reported in the published literature from other locations. Analysis of acoustic data reveals short residence times at FADs and strong school cohesion. Vertical behavior of skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye tuna that were simultaneously present at the same FAD, as determined by depth transmitting acoustic tags, suggested some vertical separation of these species. However, there was a high degree of depth overlap, particularly during early morning hours when purse seining on floating objects normally occurs in this region. This overlap limits the potential for targeting particular species or size classes of tuna through fishing depth selection. This observation was confirmed from the archival tag depth records for yellowfin and bigeye during the same time period regardless of behavior type exhibited. The recapture of bigeye and yellowfin tuna implanted with both acoustic and archival tags allowed the observation of the natural vertical behavior of these fish when they were close to anchored FADs equipped with acoustic receivers. Latitude estimates from light recorded by electronic data storage tags typically contain large errors, particularly at times near the equinoxes. We employ error propagation analysis to the fundamental equation relating latitude to solar elevation and time of day. Large latitude errors are caused by mathematical “amplification” of small errors in relating solar irradiance to solar elevation. Furthermore, the sign of these errors is such that the estimated latitude is badly biased. This analysis leads directly to a method of removing systematic error (bias) from latitude estimates in state-space track reconstruction models. Preliminary implementation of this method effectively removes all bias from latitude estimated from solar irradiance recorded by archival tags deployed both on moorings and on freely swimming tuna.

International audience; The ScanMaris project is an innovative software workshop conceived to develop and evaluate solutions of prevention and monitoring of wide maritime zones. These solutions rely on tools of tactical picture's exploitation, known as enriched for resulting from the continuous treatment of important volumes of heterogeneous data gathered in real time (sensors) and remote time (intelligence). The ScanMaris solutions enable supervising the permanent evolutions of the dense vessel traffic in order to follow the flows of transported goods (bulk, containers, energy, chemical, fishery product, passenger, etc.) according to various routes (corridor, motorway of the sea, coastal traffic, etc.) and to detect the criminal traffics (narcotics, smuggling, illegal immigration, illegal resource fishing, etc). This paper focuses on the technologies involved in the project with their major results. Nevertheless, there is no global analysis of the workshop at this stage, because ScanMaris will be recently funded by the French National Research Agency ANR, and its duration is of 24 months.

Background Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Telithromycin (a new ketolide) has shown good in vitro activity against the key causative pathogens of CAP, including S pneumoniae resistant to penicillin and/or macrolides. Methods The efficacy and safety of telithromycin 800 mg orally once daily for 7 days in the treatment of CAP were assessed in an open-label, multicenter study of 442 adults. Results Of 149 microbiologically evaluable patients, 57 (9 bacteremic) had Streptococcus pneumoniae. Of the 57 S pneumoniae pathogens isolated in these patients, 9 (2 bacteremic) were penicillin- or erythromycin-resistant; all 57 were susceptible to telithromycin and were eradicated. Other pathogens and their eradication rates were: Haemophilus influenzae (96%), Moraxella catarrhalis (100%), Staphylococcus aureus (80%), and Legionella spp. (100%). The overall bacteriologic eradication rate was 91.9%. Of the 357 clinically evaluable patients, clinical cure was achieved in 332 (93%). In the 430 patients evaluable for safety, the most common drug-related adverse events were diarrhea (8.1%) and nausea (5.8%). Conclusion Telithromycin 800 mg once daily for 7 days is an effective and well-tolerated oral monotherapy and offers a new treatment option for CAP patients, including those with resistant S pneumoniae.

Telithromycin (HMR 3647) is a new ketolide antimicrobial that was developed for the treatment of community-acquired respiratory tract infections. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, multicenter study to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of oral telithromycin, at 800 mg once daily for 5 or 10 days, with that of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, at 500/125 mg three times daily for 10 days, in adults with acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS). A total of 754 patients with AMS of less than 28 days’ duration were randomized to receive either telithromycin for 5 days followed by placebo for 5 days, telithromycin for 10 days, or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for 10 days. Clinical outcome was assessed at a test-of-cure (TOC) visit between days 17 and 24 and at a late post-therapy visit between days 31 and 45. Analysis of clinical outcome on a per-protocol basis (n = 434) demonstrated therapeutic equivalence among the three regimens at the TOC visit; in each treatment group, the clinical cure rate was approximately 75%. Only a few patients (3 to 5 in each group) had relapsed by the late post-therapy follow-up visit. Telithromycin was generally safe and well tolerated. The most common adverse events were mild or moderate gastrointestinal effects, which occurred with similar frequency in all three groups. We conclude that 5 or 10 days of telithromycin at 800 mg once daily is as effective clinically and as well tolerated as 10 days of treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Telithromycin, therefore, appears to be a valuable option for the treatment of AMS.

Background: This randomized, double-blind study compared the efficacy and tolerability of the new ketolide antimicrobial telithromycin with that of high-dose amoxicillin in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Patients and Methods: Adult patients (n = 404), with signs and symptoms of CAP and radiologic confirmation were randomized to receive telithromycin 800 mg once daily (n = 199) or amoxicillin 1,000 mg three times a day (n = 205) for 10 days. Clinical and bacteriologic outcomes were assessed at post-therapy test-of-cure (days 17–24) and late post therapy (days 31–36). Results: The clinical cure rate for telithromycin-treated patients (per protocol) pst therapy (days 17–24) was 141/149 (94.6%) and compared well with that for amoxicillin (137/152 (90.1%)). Subset analysis of patients (per protocol) showed high clinical cure rates for patients aged ≥ 65 years (telithromycin 21/24, 87.5%; amoxicillin 22/29, 75.9%); those with documented pneumococcal bacteremia (telithromycin 10/10, 100%; amoxicillin 7/9, 77.8%); and patients with a Fine score ≥ III (telithromycin 31/34, 91.2%; amoxicillin 38/47, 80.9%). Bacterial eradication rates were comparable between treatments (telithromycin 42/48, 87.5%; amoxicillin 39/45, 86.7%), with 22/23 vs 18/21 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains 9/12 vs 11/13 Haemophilus influenzae strains and all Moraxella catarrhalis isolates (five and three patients, respectively) eradicated at the test-of-cure ivsit. Both treatments were generally well tolerated. Conclusion: Telithromycin 800 mg once daily is a convenient, optimal-spectrum, first-line treatment for CAP in adults, at least as effective and well tolerated as high-dose amoxicillin.

This randomized, double-blind study compared the efficacy and safety of a 5-d course of the new ketolide antimicrobial, telithromycin, with those of a standard 10-d course of penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) in patients with group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) pharyngitis/tonsillitis. Patients aged 15-65 y (n = 395) with clinical signs and symptoms of pharyngitis/tonsillitis and a positive streptococcal antigen test or throat culture for GABHS were randomized to receive either telithromycin 800 mg once daily for 5 d (n = 198) or penicillin V 500 mg three times daily for 10 d (n = 197). Clinical and bacteriologic outcomes were assessed at post-therapy, test-of-cure (Days 16-20) and late post-therapy (Days 38-45) visits. Telithromycin for 5 d was equivalent to 10 d of penicillin V in terms of bacteriologic and clinical outcome (per-protocol): at post-therapy, test-of-cure visit, bacteriologic outcome was satisfactory in 84.3% and 89.1% of patients in the telithromycin and penicillin V groups, respectively, while clinical cure was achieved in 94.8% and 94.1% of patients, respectively. At late post-therapy, 82.4% of patients treated with telithromycin achieved a satisfactory bacteriologic outcome, compared with 84.7% of penicillin V recipients. The GABHS eradication rates for telithromycin and penicillin post-therapy were 85.2% and 89.1%, respectively, and 86.1% and 86.5%, respectively at late post-therapy. Both treatments were well tolerated, with a similar overall incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events. Short-course (5 d) therapy with telithromycin 800 mg once daily is comparable to a standard 10 d course of penicillin V for the treatment of GABHS pharyngitis/tonsillitis in adults and adolescents.

The renal phosphate (Pi) transport system matures during the 3rd postnatal wk in the rat by an increase in the carrier affinity for sodium-cotransported phosphate. This study examines the ability of pups to adapt their renal Pi transport to the dietary phosphorus content during this period of carrier affinity maturation, corresponding to the weaning period in the rat. Clearance experiments and brush border membrane studies were performed on 21-d-old rats weaned early on d 16 onto a low phosphate diet (LPD, 0.19 g/100 g), a normal phosphate diet (control, 0.78 g/100 g), or a high phosphate diet (HPD, 1.5 g/100 g). In LPD rats, the Pi fractional excretion (0.3 +/- 0.1%) was lower than in controls (18 +/- 3%, p < 0.001). It remained very low (0.21 +/- 0.05% in LPD rats versus 40.5 +/- 6.3% in controls, p < 0.001) after Pi perfusion (1.5 mumol.min-1.100 g-1) and the reabsorbed Pi per min, corrected for the glomerular filtration rate, was higher than in the two other groups. The calcium fractional excretion (12.6 +/- 1.02%) in the LPD rats was much higher than in the controls (0.42 +/- 0.2%, p < 0.001). Biological parameters such as age, growth and age (or size) at maturity are vital for accurate stock assessments and management plans to ensure that fisheries develop sustainably. Despite this, very few validated age studies have been conducted for large tropical pelagic species within the Australian region. Age and growth parameters were estimated for bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Lowe, 1839), sampled from longline fisheries in the Australian region using validated techniques based on counts of annual increments. Poor increment clarity reduced the number of otoliths included in the final analysis to only 50% of the 3200 selected for reading (39–178-cm fork length).
