1. Catalytic Sabatier Process under Thermally and Magnetically Induced Heating: A Comparative Case Study for Titania-Supported Nickel Catalyst

Abstract: In the present paper, we compare the activity, selectivity, and stability of a supported nickel catalyst in classical heating conditions and in magnetically activated catalysis by using iron wool as a heating agent. The catalyst, 5 wt% Ni supported on titania (Degussa P25), was prepared via an organometallic decomposition method and was thoroughly characterized by using elemental, microscopic, and diffraction techniques. In the event of magnetic induction heating, the % CO2 conversion reached a maximum of ~85% compared to ~78% for thermal conditions at a slightly lower temperature (~335 °C) than the thermal heating (380 °C). More importantly, both processes were found to be stable for 45 h on stream. Moreover, the effects of magnetic induction and classical heating over the catalyst evolution were discussed. This study demonstrated the potential of magnetic heating-mediated methanation, which is currently under investigation for the development of pilot-scale reactors.

Abstract: II–V semiconductor nanocrystals such as Cd3P2 and Zn3P2 have enormous potential as materials in next-generation optoelectronic devices requiring active optical properties across the visible and infrared range. To date, this potential has been unfulfilled due to their inherent instability with respect to air and moisture. Core-shell system Cd3P2/Zn3P2 is synthesized and studied from structural (morphology, crystallinity, shell diameter), chemical (composition of core, shell, and ligand sphere), and optical perspectives (absorbance, emission-steady state and time resolved, quantum yield, and air stability). The improvements achieved by coating with Zn3P2 are likely due to its identical crystal structure to Cd3P2 (tetragonal), highlighting the key role crystallographic concerns play in creating cutting edge core-shell NCs.

Abstract: This paper deals with the synthesis of high-magnetization porous silicon-based nanocomposites. Using well-controlled organometallic synthesis of ferromagnetic FeCo nanoparticles, the impregnation of mesoporous silicon has been performed by immersion of porous silicon in a colloidal solution. The technique was optimized by controlling the temperature, the immersion duration, and the solvent nature. The characterization of the nanocomposites showed a homogeneous filling of the pores and a high magnetization of 135 emu/cm3. Such composites present a great interest for many applications including data storage, medical instrumentations, catalysis, or electronics.

Abstract: The results of the investigation of the structural and magnetic (static and dynamic) properties of an assembly of metallic Fe nanoparticles synthesized by an organometallic chemical method are described. These nanoparticles are embedded in a polymer, monodisperse, with a diameter below 2 nm, which corresponds to a number of around 200 atoms. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure and Mössbauer spectrum are characteristic of metallic Fe. The structural studies by wide angle X-ray scattering indicate an original polytetrahedral atomic arrangement similar to that of β-Mn, characterized by a short-range order. The average magnetic moment per Fe atom is raised to 2.59 µB (for comparison, bulk value of metallic Fe: 2.2 µB). Even if the spontaneous magnetization decreases rapidly as compared to bulk materials, it remains enhanced even up to room temperature. The gyromagnetic ratio measured by ferromagnetic resonance is of the same order as that of bulk Fe, which allows us to conclude that the orbital and spin contributions increase at the same rate. A large magnetic anisotropy for metallic Fe has been measured up to (3.7 ± 1.0)·105 J/m3. Precise analysis of the low temperature Mössbauer spectra, show a broad distribution of large hyperfine fields. The largest hyperfine fields display the largest isomer shifts. This indicates a progressive increase of the magnetic moment inside the particle from the core to the outer shell. The components corresponding to the large hyperfine fields with large isomer shifts are indeed characteristic of surface atoms.

Abstract: Seminar, Germany; Journal of catalysis 407, 141 - 148 (2022). doi:10.1016/j.jcat.2022.01.030, Bimetallic iron-ruthenium and cobalt-ruthenium nanoparticles with systematic variations in the Fe:Ru and Co:Ru ratios are prepared following an organometallic approach and immobilized on an imidazolium-based supported ionic liquid phase (SILP). Resulting MxRu100-x@SILP materials are characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, confirming the formation of small, well-dispersed and alloyed zero-valent bimetallic nanoparticles. A systematic comparison of the performances of FexRu100−x@SILP and CoxRu100−x@SILP catalysts is made using the hydrogenation of benzilideneacetone as model reaction. The M:Ru ratio is found to have a critical influence on activity and selectivity, with clear synergistic effects arising from the combination of the noble and 3d metals. Abstract: Copper chromite is decorated with iron carbide nanoparticles, producing a magnetically activatable multifunctional catalytic system. This system (ICNPs@Cu2 Cr2 O5 ) can reduce aromatic ketones to aromatic alcohols when exposed to magnetic induction. Under magnetic excitation, the ICNPs generate locally confined hot spots, selectively activating the Cu2 Cr2 O5 surface while the global temperature remains low (≈80 °C). The catalyst selectively hydrogenates a scope of benzylic and non-benzylic ketones under mild conditions (3 bar H2 , heptane), while ICNPs@Cu2 Cr2 O5 or Cu2 Cr2 O5 are inactive when the same global temperature is adjusted by conventional heating. A flow reactor is presented that allows the use of magnetic induction for continuous-flow hydrogenation at elevated pressure. The excellent catalytic properties of ICNPs@Cu2 Cr2 O5 for the hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfuralacetone are conserved for at least 17 h on stream, demonstrating for the first time the application of a magnetically heated catalyst to a continuously operated hydrogenation reaction in the liquid phase.

Abstract: Suppressing aromatic ring reduction in noble-metal-catalyzed H/D exchange reactions remains a challenge. This drawback may be overcome by finding a synergetic effect in bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs). Herein, we report the synthesis of bimetallic lipo- and water-soluble Ru/Ir NPs. They were characterized by state-of-the-art techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared, powder X-ray diffraction, and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. These NPs were found to disperse in both organic and aqueous media because of the stabilization and coordination of adequate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands to the NP surface. They were tested in the deuteration of 2-phenylpyridine, 2-methyl-naphthylamine, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-naphthtylamine, and l-lysine using D2 as the isotopic source. Bimetallic NPs showed an unusual selectivity toward the H/D exchange of 2-phenylpyridine, deuterating not only the expected C–H positions close to the N atom but also remote positions on the heterocycle. Additionally, reduction of the aromatic rings, which is a common undesired side reaction catalyzed by Ru NPs, was not observed. These outcomes, rationalized by a synergetic effect of both metals, are enhanced when NHC ligands are on the surface in comparison to model catalysts stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone. With regard to non-aromatic substrates, CH2-α and CH2-ε positions with respect to the amino acid group of l-lysine were fully deuterated, while moderate deuteration of the γ position was observed as the iridium content was increased in the bimetallic system.

Abstract: The development of energetically efficient processes for the aqueous reduction of biomass-derived compounds into chemicals is key for the optimal transformation of biomass. Herein we report an early example of the reduction of biomass-derived oxygenated compounds in water by magnetically induced catalysis. Non-coated and carbon-coated core-shell FeCo@Ni magnetic nanoparticles were used as the heating agent and the catalyst simultaneously. In this way it was possible to control the product distribution by adjusting the field amplitude applied during the magnetic catalysis, opening a precedent for this type of catalysis. 18. Surface reactions of ammonia on ruthenium nanoparticles revealed by 15N and 13C solid-state NMR

Abstract: Ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) stabilized by bis-diphenylphosphinobutane (dppb) and surface-saturated with hydrogen have been exposed to gaseous 15NH3 and studied using solid-state 15N CP MAS NMR. Three signals have been observed at 24.5, −12 and −42 ppm (reference external liquid ammonia) which are assigned to chemisorbed ammonia species RuNHx. Sample exposure to vacuum or aging leads to conversion of the 24.5 ppm species into the other ones, a process which is reversed by re-exposure to hydrogen gas. Exposure to a mixture of 15NH3 and 13CO leads to the formation of surface bound urea as demonstrated by 15N and 13C CP MAS NMR. To understand the surface reactions of ammonia and the 15N NMR results, quantum chemical calculations of the structures, energies and 15N chemical shifts of ammonia species on Ru6 and Ru55 model clusters have been performed. The calculations indicate that under the experimental conditions applied, the fractions of RuNH3 and RuNH2 species are similar, independent of the H2 pressure. No RuN and RuNH species are formed which are calculated to resonate at a lower field than the signals observed experimentally. However, the 15N chemical shifts of RuNH2 depend on the number of neighboring surface hydrogens and hence on the H2 pressure. Thus, the signal at 24.5 ppm is assigned to RuNH2 in a neighborhood rich in surface hydrogens. RuNH2 depleted in neighboring surface hydrogens and RuNH3 resonated both in a similar chemical shift range to which the signals at −12 and −42 belong. A change of the hydrogen pressure then leads to interconversion of hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-poor neighborhoods of RuNH2 but does not alter the fractions of RuNH3 and RuNH2 according to the calculated stability diagram. Nevertheless, dissociation of RuNH3 into RuNH2 and surface hydrogen is expected to take place during the initial ammonia adsorption process and at low H2 pressures and high temperatures. Finally, some preliminary quantum chemical calculations suggest stepwise binding of two NH2 groups to adsorbed CO leading to surface bound urea where the oxygen is coordinated to Ru.

19. Supramolecular nanocapsules as two-fold stabilizers of outer-cavity sub-nanometric Ru NPs and inner-cavity ultra-small Ru clusters

Abstract: The synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNP) with high surface area and controlled shape is of paramount importance to increase their catalytic performance. The detailed growing process of NP is mostly unknown and understanding the specific steps would pave the way for a rational synthesis of the desired MNP. Here we take advantage of the stabilization properties exerted by the tetragonal prismatic supramolecular nanocapsule 8·(BArF)8 to develop a synthetic methodology for sub-nanometric RuNP (0.6-0.7 nm). The catalytic properties of these sub-nanometric nanoparticles were tested on the hydrogenation of styrene, obtaining excellent selectivity for the hydrogenation of the alkene moiety. In addition, the encapsulation of [Ru5] clusters inside the nanocapsule is strikingly observed in most of the experimental conditions, as ascertained by HR-MS. Moreover, a thorough DFT study enlightens the nature of the [Ru5] clusters as tb-Ru5H2(η6-PhH)2(η6-pyz)3 (2) trapped by two arene moieties of the clip, or as tb-Ru5H2(η1-pyz)6(η6-pyz)3 (3) trapped between the two Zn-porphyrin units of the nanocapsule. Both options fulfill the Wade-Mingos counting rules, i.e. 72 CVEs for the closo tb. The trapped [Ru5] metallic clusters are proposed to be the first-grown seeds of subsequent formation of the subnanometric RuNP. Moreover, the double role of the nanocapsule in stabilising ∼0.7 nm NPs and also in hosting ultra-small Ru clusters, is unprecedented and may pave the way towards the synthesis of ultra-small metallic clusters for catalytic purposes This work was supported by grants from MINECO-Spain (PID2019-104498GB-I00 and EQC2018-004422-P) and Generalitat de Catalunya (2017SGR264) to X.R. Abstract: International audience; Radiolabelling is fundamental in drug discovery and development as it is mandatory for preclinical ADME studies and late-stage human clinical trials. Herein, a general, effective, and easy to implement method for the multiple site incorporation of deuterium and tritium atoms using the commercially available and air-stable iridium precatalyst [Ir(COD)(OMe)]2 is described. A large scope of pharmaceutically relevant substructures can be labelled using this method including pyridine, pyrazine, indole, carbazole, aniline, oxa-/thia-zoles, thiophene, but also electron-rich phenyl groups. The high functional group tolerance of the reaction is highlighted by the labelling of a wide range of complex pharmaceuticals, containing notably halogen or sulfur atoms and nitrile groups. The multiple site hydrogen isotope incorporation has been explained by the in situ formation of complementary catalytically active species: monometallic iridium complexes and iridium nanoparticles.

Abstract: A magnetically induced catalysis can be promoted taking advantage of optimal heating properties from the magnetic nanoparticles to be employed. However, if unprotected, these heating agents that are usually air-sensitive, get sintered under the harsh catalytic conditions. In this context, we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first example of air-stable magnetic nanoparticles that: a) show an excellent performance as heating agents in the CO 2 methanation catalyzed by Ni/SiRAlOx, with CH 4 yields above 95%, and b) do not sinter under reaction conditions. To attain both characteristics we demonstrate, first the exchange-coupled magnetic approach as an alternative and effective way to tune the magnetic response and heating efficiency, and second, the chemical stability of cuboctahedron-shaped core-shell hard CoFe 2 O 4-soft Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles.

Abstract: International audience; Induction heating of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) has been recently explored as a new methodology to activate heterogeneous catalytic reactions. This approach requires the design and the synthesis of nano-objects displaying both a high heating power and an excellent catalytic activity. Here, using a surface engineering approach, we report for the first time the use of bimetallic NPs for magnetically-induced CO2 methanation which acts both as heating agent and as catalyst. Thus, we describe the organometallic synthesis of Fe30Ni70 NPs, displaying high heating powers at low magnetic field amplitudes. These NPs are active but only slightly selective for CH4 after deposition on SirAlOx due to the presence of an iron rich shell (25 mL·min-1 , 25 mT, 300 kHz, conversion 71%, methane selectivity 65%). Remarkably, a proper surface engineering consisting in depositing a thin Ni layer leads to Fe30Ni70@Ni NPs displaying a very high activity for CO2 hydrogenation and a full selectivity. For the first time, a quantitative yield in methane is obtained at low magnetic field and mild conditions (25 mL·min-1 , 19 mT, 300 kHz, conversion 100%, methane selectivity 100%).

Abstract: International audience; Purpose: Technologies with low environmental impacts and promoting renewable energy sources are required to meet the energetic demand while facing the increase of gas emissions associated to the greenhouse effect and the depletion of fossil fuels. CO2 methanation activated by magnetic heating has recently been reported as a highly efficient and innovative power-to-gas technology in a perspective of successful renewable energy storage and carbon dioxide valorisation. In this work, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of this process is performed, in order to highlight the environmental potential of the technology, and its competitivity with in respect to conventional heating technologies.Methods: The IMPACT 2002+ was used for this LCA. The process studied integrates methanation, water electrolysis and CO2 capture and separation. This “cradle-to-gate” LCA study does not consider the use of methane, which is the reaction product. The functional unit used is the energy content of the produced CH4. The LCA was carried out using the energy mix data for the years 2020 and 2050 as given by the French Agency for Environment and Energy management (ADEME). Consumption data were either collected from literature or obtained from the LPCNO measurements as discussed by Marbaix (2019). The environmental impact of the CO2 methanation activated by magnetic heating was compared with the environmental impact of a power-to-gas plant using conventional heating (Helmeth) and considering the environmental impact of the natural gas extraction.Results: It is shown that the total flow rate of reactants, the source of CO2 and the energy mix play a major role on the environmental impact of sustainable CH4 production, whereas the lifetime of the considered catalyst has no significant influence. As a result of the possible improvements on the above-mentioned parameters, the whole process is expected to reduce by 75% in its environmental impact toward 2050. This illustrates the high environmental potential of the methanation activated by magnetic heating when coupled with industrial exhausts and renewable electricity production.Conclusions: The technology is expected to be environmentally competitive compared with existing similar processes using external heating sources with the additional interest of being extremely dynamic in response, in line with the intermittency of renewable energy production.

Abstract: [EN] The main challenge in the hydrogenation of alkynes into (E)- or (Z)-alkenes is to control the selective formation of the alkene, avoiding the over-reduction to the corresponding alkane. In addition, the preparation of recoverable and reusable catalysts is of high interest. In this work, we report novel nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) stabilized by three different imidazolium-amidinate ligands (ICy center dot(NCN)-N-(Ar); L1: Ar = p-tol, L2: Ar = p-anisyl and L3: Ar = p-ClC6H4). The as-prepared Ni NPs were fully characterized by (HR)-TEM, XRD, WASX, XPS and VSM. The nanocatalysts are active in the hydrogenation of various substrates. They present a remarkable selectivity in the hydrogenation of alkynes towards (Z)-alkenes, particularly in the hydrogenation of 3-hexyne into (Z)-3-hexene under mild reaction conditions (room temperature, 3% mol Ni and 1 bar H-2). The catalytic behaviour of Ni NPs was influenced by the electron donor/acceptor groups (-Me, -OMe, -Cl) in the N-aryl substituents of the amidinate moiety of the ligands. Abstract: The production of water-soluble and stable metallic nanoparticles that can act as recoverable catalysts still remains a challenge. Herein we report the behavior of a series of water-soluble platinum nanoparticles containing different sulfonated NHC ligands as recoverable catalysts for the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds in pure water. The NHC-protected nanoparticles are found to be active and, in general, can be reutilized with no loss of activity or selectivity, although differences are observed depending on the substitution of the NHC ligand or on the substrate being hydrogenated. Pt leaching was determined to be only 0.03–0.29%. TEM images reveal that the shape of the nanoparticles remains unaltered after catalysis. However, the size of the particles increased, although with no influence on their catalytic properties in many instances.

Abstract: The control of the crystalline structure and shape (crystal habit) of nanoparticles (NPs) is the key to controlling their physical and chemical properties. Among the different metals, the crystallogenesis of ruthenium NPs has been less studied, and until recently, the Ru NP crystal structure and morphology have been considered as presenting less versatility than the face-centered cubic (fcc) metals of the platinum group. Here, we show that while the hydrogenation of [Ru(COD)(COT)] in solutions containing a long-chain amine (hexadecylamine, HDA) in large excess leads to isotropic NPs adopting the expected hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure of bulk Ru, a long-chain carboxylic acid (lauric acid, LA) in large excess induces the formation of Ru nano-objects of two original structures: ultrathin platelets and icosahedra. The latter have never been produced so systematically by other methods. We show that carbon monoxide, produced in situ by the decarbonylation of lauric acid, plays a pivotal role in the stabilization of the Ru icosahedra. This result is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which show that above a critical surface coverage of CO, small Ru icosahedra are more stable than the Ru bipyramid polyhedra crystallizing in the hcp structure. Thus, in situ production of CO results in a competition between icosahedral and hcp seeds, which explains the mixture of icosahedra and ultrathin platelets. Another effect of the large excess of lauric acid is the stabilization of the ruthenium precursors in solution, limiting the nucleation extent and slowing down the NP growth. While the growth of the icosahedral seeds is limited because of the structural strains, the growth of the hcp seeds preferentially develops the (0001) facets, leading to ultrathin platelets and threefold stars., This work was funded by the French National Research Agency, ANR, in the framework of the TANOPOL project (ANR-15-CE07-0011-01). Abstract: International audience; Liquid phase syntheses mainly yield nanoparticles with compact shapes, such as spheres or cubes. However, controlling not only the size but also the shape of magnetic nanoparticles would enable a fine tuning of their intrinsic properties, due to the shape anisotropy induced by long-range dipolar interactions. We report here a fairly simple approach based on the reduction of an amidinate complex in presence of a mixture of long chains acid and amine to yield ferromagnetic Ni nanoparticles. The formation of stable Ni complexes could be promoted in situ by increasing the acid concentration, thus allowing to tune the final particle size. While amine could be use as soft reducing agent, dihydrogen was essential to promote anisotropic shapes. Electron holography combined with micromagnetic simulations showed that the resulting shape anisotropy could impose complex magnetic configurations within planar tetrapods. Regarding the heating efficiency, which directly scales with the magnetic hysteresis loop area, maxima of 100W.g-1 were found for nanoplates and nanorods, opening promising perspectives for magnetically-induced catalysis.

Abstract: International audience; The main obstacle to the aqueous carbonation of non-serpentinised magnesium silicates is the formation of surface passivation layers, which severely limits the reaction rate and thus the overall efficiency of the process. A technological solution to overcome this problem is to perform the carbonation process inside a stirred bead mill, which aims to continuously remove the surface by-product layers by attrition. In this work, the aqueous carbonation of ferronickel slag, a mineralogically complex mining waste composed of a Mg/Si rich amorphous phase and a crystalline ferrous forsterite, was studied at 150°C and under 10 bar of CO 2 with different operating configurations: carbonation alone (C mode), attrition followed by carbonation (A-C mode) and concomitant attrition and carbonation (AC mode). By careful observation of the mineralogy and the surface of the secondary phases formed using complementary analytical techniques, the article allows a better understanding of the passivation phenomenon inherent to the carbonation of magnesium silicates, and confirms the effectiveness of continuous surface mechanical depassivation for reaching high carbonation rates with this type of material. Comparative analysis of the products obtained with the three operating modes shows that a true synergy takes place between attrition and carbonation due to the combined effect of continuous exfoliation and mechanical activation of particle surface, which goes far beyond the simple increase in surface area due to particle size reduction. While mechanical depassivation is here substantiated by several evidence, the additional mechanochemical activation effect cannot be delineated from experiment; however its beneficial contribution to carbonation is inferred from its observation in A-C mode. The work finds that the synergy between attrition and carbonation also yields very characteristic products. They consist in micrometric agglomerates formed by bound spherical particles a few tens of nanometers in size. These particles themselves contain an entanglement of nanometric grains of carbonates and amorphous silica dispersed inside a magnesium-depleted alumino-siliceous matrix. These results confirm that concomitant attrition and carbonation offers one of the most promising pathways for developing direct aqueous carbonation processes with non-thermally activatable magnesium silicates.

While these fields are dominated by the use of iron oxides, reduced metal NPs are of interest since they display high magnetization and adjustable anisotropy according to their size, shape and composition. The use of organometallic precursors makes it possible to adjust the size, shape (sphere, cube, rod, wire, urchin, …) and composition (alloys, core-shell, composition gradient, dumbbell, …) of the resulting NPs and hence their magnetic properties. We discuss here the synthesis of magnetic metal NPs from organometallic precursors carried out in Toulouse, as well as their associated properties and their potential in applications.

Abstract: Today, hydrogen mainly originates from fossil sources (gas, oil, and coal). Room temperature water electrolysis is an interesting alternative for renewable electricity storage, even if it is well-known that high-temperature systems are more efficient. To address this issue, we studied different non-platinum group metal (non-PGM) catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by recording cyclic voltamperograms with a rotating disk electrode set up. Physicochemical characterizations of Ni-based and FeNi3-based catalysts were performed using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Ni synthesized by the hot injection method is a good catalyst for HER, yet still less active than Pt/C. FeNi3 with and without a Ni surface doping is very good OER catalysts, slightly better than commercial unsupported IrO2. Electrochemical tests under alternating magnetic field (AMF) using these nanoparticles are ongoing, as these materials are compatible with AMF activation.

Abstract: [EN] Ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) supported on reduced-graphene oxide doped with N (NH2-rGO) was synthesized and used for the selective hydrogenation of fatty acids to alcohols, being the hydrogenation of palmitic acid selected as model. Ru was stabilized forming uniform nanometer size particles on N-doped graphene (Ru/NH2-rGO). The resultant catalyst was very selective for the carbonyl reduction giving 93% of the aliphatic alcohol at 99% conversion. The Ru/NH2-rGO catalysts was more active and selective than the corresponding Ru on non-doped graphene (Ru/rGO) or Ru on carbon (Ru/C). Mechanistic studies points to a dual mechanism for H-2 dissociation, i.e. homolytic and heterolytic cleavage exists on the Ru/NH2-rGO, while only the homolytic H-2 dissociation occurs on Ru/rGO. This heterolytic splitting, which activates the carbonyl groups and facilitates the hydrogenation of aliphatic acids, is due to the presence of basic centres next to the Ru atoms. The presence of N atoms also increases the stability of the catalyst, allowing a reuse up to four times. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Abstract: Magnetic heating, namely, the use of heat released by magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) excited with a high-frequency magnetic field, has so far been mainly used for biological applications. More recently, it has been shown that this heat can be used to catalyze chemical reactions, some of them occurring at temperatures up to 700 °C. The full exploitation of MNP heating properties requires the knowledge of the temperature dependence of their heating power up to high temperatures. Here, a setup to perform such measurements is described based on the use of a pyrometer for high-temperature measurements and on a protocol based on the acquisition of cooling curves, which allows us to take into account calorimeter losses. We demonstrate that the setup permits to perform measurements under a controlled atmosphere on solid state samples up to 550 °C. It should in principle be able to perform measurements up to 900 °C. The method, uncertainties, and possible artifacts are described and analyzed in detail. The influence on losses of putting under vacuum different parts of the calorimeter is measured. To illustrate the setup possibilities, the temperature dependence of heating power is measured on four samples displaying very different behaviors. Their heating power increases or decreases with temperature, displaying temperature sensibilities ranging from -2.5 to +4.4% K-1. This setup is useful to characterize the MNPs for magnetically heated catalysis applications and to produce data that will be used to test models permitting to predict the temperature dependence of MNP heating power., The authors acknowledge the ERC Advanced Grant (No. MONACAT 2015-694159). Abstract: International audience; Conspectus. Recently, Hydrogen Isotope Exchange (HIE) reactions have experienced an impressive development due to the growing importance of isotope containing compounds in various fields including materials and life sciences, beside their classical use for mechanistic studies in chemistry and biology. Tritium-labelled compounds are also of crucial interest to study the in vivo fate of a bioactive substance or in radioligand binding assays. Over the past few years, deuterium-labelled drugs have been extensively studied for the improvement of ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion) properties of existing bioactive molecules as a consequence of the primary kinetic isotope effect. Furthermore, in the emergent “omic” fields, the need for new stable isotopically labeled internal standards (SILS) for quantitative GC- or LC-MS analyses is increasing. Because of their numerous applications, the development of powerful synthetic methods to access deuterated and tritiated molecules with either high isotope incorporation and/or selectivities is of paramount importance.HIE reactions allow a late-stage incorporation of hydrogen isotopes in a single synthetic step, thus representing an advantageous alternative to conventional multistep synthesis approaches which are time- and resource-consuming. Moreover, HIE reactions can be considered as the most fundamental C–H functionalization processes and are therefore of great interest for the chemists’ community. Depending on the purpose, HIE reactions must either be highly regioselective or allow a maximal incorporation of hydrogen isotopes, sometimes both. In this context, metal-catalyzed HIE reactions are generally performed using either homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis which may have considerable drawbacks including an insufficient isotope incorporation and a lack of chemo- and/or regioselectivity, respectively.Over the past 6 years, we have shown that nanocatalysis can be considered as a powerful tool to access complex labeled molecules (e.g., pharmaceuticals, peptides and oligonucleotides) via regio- and chemoselective or even enantiospecific labeling processes occurring at the surface of metallic nanoclusters (Ru or Ir). Numerous heterocyclic (both saturated and unsaturated) and acyclic scaffolds have been labeled with an impressive functional group tolerance, and highly deuterated compounds or high molar activity tritiated drugs have been obtained. An insight into mechanisms has also been provided by theoretical calculations to explain the regioselectivities of the isotope incorporation. Our studies have suggested that undisclosed key intermediates, including 4- and 5-membered dimetallacycles, account for the particular regioselectivities observed during the process, in contrast to the 5- or 6-membered metallacycle key intermediates usually encountered in homogeneous catalysis. These findings together with the important number of available coordination sites explain the compelling reactivity of metal nanoparticles, in between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. They represent innovative tools combining the advantages of both methods for the isotopic labeling and activation of C–H bonds of complex molecules.

Abstract: Bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) are complex systems with properties that far exceed those of the individual constituents. In particular, association of a noble metal and a first-row transition metal are attracting increasing interest for applications in catalysis, electrocatalysis, and magnetism, among others. Such objects display a rich structural chemistry thanks to their ability to form intermetallic phases, random alloys, or core-shell species. However, under reaction conditions, the surface of these nanostructures may be modified due to migration, segregation, or isolation of single atoms, leading to the formation of original structures with enhanced catalytic activity. In this respect, Zakhtser et al. report in this issue of ACS Nano the synthesis and study of the chemical evolution of the surface of a series of PtZn nanostructured alloys. In this Perspective, we report some selected examples of bimetallic nanocatalysts and their increased activity compared to that of the corresponding pure noble metal, with a special focus on Pt-based systems. We also discuss the mobility of the species present on the catalyst surface and the electronic influence of one metal to the other.

Abstract: International audience; Herein we describe a new method for the determination of the surface temperature of magnetically heated nanoparticles in solution using the temperature dependency of the catalytic performances of iron carbide nanoparticles coated with ruthenium (Fe2.2C@Ru) for acetophenone hydrodeoxygenation. A correlation between nanoparticle surface temperature and magnetic field could be established. Very high surface temperatures could be estimated in different solvents, which were also found similar at a given magnetic field and well above some solvent boiling points.

Abstract: International audience; The Sabatier reaction activated by high-frequency magnetic fields is a promising approach for the power-togas process because of expected high energy efficiencies and fast switch-on times. Recent progresses have been achieved by combining nanoparticles displaying both a high heating power and a good catalytic activity. Here, we alternatively use iron microparticles associated with our owndesigned Ni/CeO 2 catalyst. The heating agent is cheap and abundant, and we demonstrate that the presence of eddy currents in the system improves its heating performance. The contribution of eddy currents to global heating is successfully determined by an original protocol consisting in comparing a calorimetric and a high-frequency hysteresis loop-based method to measure heating power. In addition, the optimization of the catalyst bed using SiC-spacers limits sintering and thus improves the durability of the catalyst. The energy efficiency of the catalysis process, calculated as a function of coil consumption and gas flow, is clearly improved by the use of an air-cooled Litz wire coil. These improvements are a step forward toward the development of a cheap and efficient process for chemical energy storage.

Abstract: International audience; Identifying descriptors that govern charge transport in molecular electronics is of prime importance for the elaboration of devices. The effects of molecule characteristics, such as size, bulkiness or charge, have been widely reported. Herein, we show that the molecule polarizability can be a crucial parameter to consider. To this end, platinum nanoparticle self-assemblies (PtNP SAs) are synthesized in solution, including a series of polyoxometalates (POMs). The charge of the POM unit can be modified according to the nature of the central heteroatom while keeping its size constant. POM hybrids that display remote terminal thiol functions strongly anchor the PtNP surface to form robust SAs. IV curves, recorded by conductive AFM, show a decrease in Coulomb blockade as the dielectric constant of the POMs increases. In this system, charge transport across molecular junctions can be interpreted as variations in polarizability, which is directly related to the dielectric constant.

Abstract: A key challenge for designing hybrid materials is the development of chemical tools to control the organization of inorganic nanoobjects at low scales, from mesoscopic (~µm) to nanometric (~nm). So far, the most efficient strategy to align assemblies of nanoparticles consists in a bottom-up approach by decorating block copolymer lamellae with nanoobjects. This well accomplished procedure is nonetheless limited by the thermodynamic constraints that govern copolymer assembly, the entropy of mixing as described by the Flory–Huggins solution theory supplemented by the critical influence of the volume fraction of the block components. Here we show that a completely different approach can lead to tunable 2D lamellar organization of nanoparticles with homopolymers only, on condition that few elementary rules are respected: 1) the polymer spontaneously allows a structural preorganization, 2) the polymer owns functional groups that interact with the nanoparticle surface, 3) the nanoparticles show a surface accessible for coordination., Precise organization of nanoparticles and polymers for the design of hybrid materials remains a challenging task. Here, the authors show a convenient way to organize nanoobjects by preorganization of inorganic particles in presence of a functional peptidic homopolymer.

Abstract: The thermal management of catalytic reactors dedicated to highly exothermic reactions is often challenging, due to the existence of a positive thermal feedback. Up to now, many design and control options have been used to operate such reactors safely and efficiently. The present study examines the theoretical benefit of resorting to an alternative stabilization strategy based on the use of induction-heated pellets. Under given inductive conditions, the thermal power released by these pellets is a decreasing function of their temperature (negative thermal feedback). Wall-cooled fixed-bed methanation reactors containing mixed catalytic and induction-sensitive pellets are simulated numerically. The steady-state behavior of reactors enhanced by induction is compared to the behavior of conventional reactors. It is shown that the parametric sensitivity of induction reactors is lower than that of a conventional reactor achieving the same conversion. Induction reactors also demonstrate an ability to reach a higher chemical yield than a conventional reactor, before entering the runaway region. The impact of the operation conditions (inductive field, coolant temperature) and of the induction-sensitive pellets properties (absorption rate as a function of temperature) on the stabilization is analyzed.

Abstract: [EN] Magnetically induced catalysis using magnetic nanoparticles (MagNPs) as heating agents is a new efficient method to perform reactions at high temperatures. However, the main limitation is the lack of stability of the catalysts operating in such harsh conditions. Normally, above 500 degrees C, significant sintering of MagNPs takes place. Here we present encapsulated magnetic FeCo and Co NPs in carbon (Co@C and FeCo@C) as an ultrastable heating material suitable for high-temperature magnetic catalysis. Indeed, FeCo@C or a mixture of FeCo@C:Co@C (2:1) decorated with Ni or Pt-Sn showed good stability in terms of temperature and catalytic performances. In addition, consistent conversions and selectivities regarding conventional heating were observed for CO2 methanation (Sabatier reaction), propane dehydrogenation (PDH), and propane dry reforming (PDR). Abstract: International audience; A main goal of molecular electronics is to relate the performance of devices to the structure and electronic state of molecules. Among the variety of possibilities that organic, organometallic and coordination chemistries offer to tune the energy levels of molecular components, spin crossover phenomenon is a perfect candidate for elaboration of molecular switches. The reorganization of the electronic state population of the molecules associated to the spin crossover can indeed lead to a significant change in conductivity. However, molecular spin crossover is very sensitive to the environment and can disappear once the molecules are integrated into devices. Here, we show that the association of ultra-small 1.2 nm platinum nanoparticles with FeII triazole-based spin crossover coordination polymers leads to self-assemblies, extremely well organized at the sub-3 nm scale. The quasi-perfect alignment of nanoparticles observed by transmission electron microscopy, in addition to specific signature in infrared spectroscopy, demonstrates the coordination of the long-chain molecules with the nanoparticles. Spin crossover is confirmed in such assemblies by X-ray absorption spectroscopic measurements and shows unambiguous characteristics both in magnetic and charge transport measurements. Coordinating polymers are therefore ideal candidates for the elaboration of robust, well-organized, hybrid self-assemblies with metallic nanoparticles, while maintaining sensitive functional properties, such as spin crossover.
