- Abstract
This thesis explores the use of electrodialysis, an electrical and membrane-based technology, to partially desalinate polymer-containing produced water (PFPW) generated in the oil and gas industry. Chapter 1 includes an introduction to polymer flooding, explains its water needs in terms of quality and quantity, and enlists some possible treatments to reach the desired water quality. It is also explained how, by partially desalinating PFPW while retaining the viscosifying polymer, electrodialysis would allow reusing the water for polymer flooding, while significantly decreasing the amount of new polymer to be added when preparing viscous solutions. The chapter also includes some possible constraints for the implementation and enlists the research questions that are answered in the subsequent chapters. In Chapter 2, we assessed electrodialysis to desalinate PFPW generated in different scenarios and evaluated the reuse of the desalted water to confect the polymer-flooding solution. The experimental work involved desalting two kinds of synthetic PFPW solutions, one with relatively low salinity (TDS=5000 mg/L, brackish PFPW), and another with high salinity (TDS= 32,000 mg/L, sea PFPW), at two different temperatures, and later reusing the desalted solution to prepare viscous solutions. The analysis for the ED-step included the effects of feed composition and temperature on water transport, energy consumption, and current efficiency. It was found that the presence of polymer did not significantly influence the water transport rate nor the specific energy consumption for the seawater cases, but had a measurable effect when desalting brackish water at 20°C. It was also found that some polymer remained in the stack, the loss occurring faster for the brackish PFPW. Still, both kinds of reused PFPW probed adequate to be employed as a basis for preparing polymer solutions.Chapter 3 addressed the selective removal of divalent cations from PFPW through a variety of operational cond

- Abstract
Fields such as water and wastewater treatment, dredging, mining, food processing, textile and paper making, petroleum and chemical industries face the challenge of particle removal from (waste) water. The removal of solids from these water streams is generally achieved via the coagulation/flocculation process, which is a simple and effective way to destabilise, agglomerate and remove particles from water and wastewater. Currently, this process is widely accomplished with the use of inorganic coagulants and fossil-based organic flocculants. Flocculants are particularly important because they are efficient at low dosages and able to form strong flocs. However, most synthetic flocculants biodegrade poorly and some of the degradation products/monomer residues are toxic, with acrylamide from polyacrylamide as a well-known example to have carcinogenic and neurotoxic effects. Besides, unreacted toxic chemicals used to synthesise the monomer units, such as formaldehyde, epichlorohydrin, and dimethylamine, have been found as sources of contaminants in treated water. Hence, the use of synthetic flocculants can hardly be considered a sustainable (waste) water treatment approach, especially in open systems such as in surface water treatment, dredging and mining. As an alternative, bioflocculants have gained increasing attention for water treatment since they are generally safe, biodegradable, and can effectively flocculate particles with performances sometimes comparable with synthetic flocculants. However, a class of promising bioflocculants yet to be fully explored are microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). EPS are products of microbial biochemical secretions, comprising different macromolecules such as polysaccharides, proteins, lipids and humics substances. The high molecular weight of EPS coupled with their net negative charge make them anionic polyelectrolytes that can be applied in several fields such as for particle flocculation and heavy metal adsorption. - Abstract
The marketplace-level domain ontologies from the Virtual Materials Marketplace (VIMMP) project are presented. It is discussed how a two-step ontology alignment approach can be employed for aligning the domain ontologies with the European Materials and Modelling Ontology (EMMO), the top-level ontology used by VIMMP. This is illustrated by an example from molecular modelling and simulation.

Background: Individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus are at increased risk for heart failure (HF), particularly those with coexisting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or kidney disease. Some but not all dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors have been associated with increased HF risk. We performed secondary analyses of HF and related outcomes with the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor linagliptin versus placebo in CARMELINA (The Cardiovascular and Renal Microvascular Outcome Study With Linagliptin), a cardiovascular outcomes trial that enrolled participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or kidney disease. Methods: Participants in 27 countries with type 2 diabetes mellitus and concomitant atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or kidney disease were randomized 1:1 to receive once daily oral linagliptin 5 mg or placebo, on top of standard of care. All hospitalization for HF (hHF), cardiovascular outcomes, and deaths were prospectively captured and centrally adjudicated. In prespecified and post hoc analyses of HF and related events, Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for region and baseline history of HF were used. Recurrent hHF events were analyzed using a negative binomial model. In a subset of participants with left ventricular ejection fraction captured within the year before randomization, HF-related outcomes were assessed in subgroups stratified by left ventricular ejection fraction > or 50%. Results: CARMELINA enrolled 6979 participants (mean age, 65.9 years; estimated glomerular filtration rate, mL/min per 1.73m(2); hemoglobin A1c, 8.0%; 62.9% men; diabetes mellitus duration, 14.8 years), including 1873 (26.8%) with a history of HF at baseline. Median follow-up was 2.2 years. Linagliptin versus placebo did not affect the incidence of hHF (209/3494 [6.0%] versus 226/3485 [6.5%], respectively; hazard ratio [HR], 0.90; 95% CI, 0.74-1.08), the composite of cardiovascular death/hHF (HR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.82-1.08), or risk for recurrent hHF events (326 versus 359 events, respectively; rate ratio, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.75-1.20). There was no heterogeneity of linagliptin effects on hHF by history of HF at baseline, baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate or urine albumin-creatinine ratio, or prerandomization left ventricular ejection fraction. Conclusions: In a large, international cardiovascular outcome trial in participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus and concomitant atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or kidney disease, linagliptin did not affect the risk of hHF or other selected HF-related outcomes, including among participants with and without a history of HF, across the spectrum of kidney disease, and independent of previous left ventricular ejection fraction. IMPORTANCE Type 2 diabetes is associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. Prior trials have demonstrated CV safety of 3 dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors but have included limited numbers of patients with high CV risk and chronic kidney disease. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of linagliptin, a selective DPP-4 inhibitor, on CV outcomes and kidney outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk of CV and kidney events. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter noninferiority trial conducted from August 2013 to August 2016 at 605 clinic sites in 27 countries among adults with type 2 diabetes, hemoglobin A(1c) of 6.5% to 10.0%, high CV risk (history of vascular disease and urine-albumin creatinine ratio [UACR] > 200mg/g), and high renal risk (reduced eGFR and micro-or macroalbuminuria). Participants with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) were excluded. Final follow-up occurred on January 18, 2018. INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive linagliptin, 5 mg once daily (n = 3494), or placebo once daily (n = 3485) added to usual care. Other glucose-lowering medications or insulin could be added based on clinical need and local clinical guidelines. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Primary outcomewas time to first occurrence of the composite of CV death, nonfatalmyocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. Criteria for noninferiority of linagliptin vs placebo was defined by the upper limit of the 2-sided 95% CI for the hazard ratio (HR) of linagliptin relative to placebo being less than 1.3. Secondary outcome was time to first occurrence of adjudicated death due to renal failure, ESRD, or sustained 40% or higher decrease in eGFR from baseline. RESULTS Of 6991 enrollees, 6979 (mean age, 65.9 years; eGFR, 54.6 mL/min/1.73m2; 80.1% with UACR > 30mg/g) received at least 1 dose of study medication and 98.7% completed the study. During a median follow-up of 2.2 years, the primary outcome occurred in 434 of 3494 (12.4%) and 420 of 3485 (12.1%) in the linagliptin and placebo groups, respectively, (absolute incidence rate difference, 0.13 [95% CI,-0.63 to 0.90] per 100 person-years) (HR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.89-1.17; P

- Abstract
Household digesters are anaerobic reactors applied mostly in rural areas of developing countries with tropical climate. The Chinese dome digester is the most popular household digester type in Asia and Africa, and has become the basis for contemporary developments in the household digester sector around the world. Household digesters are operated at ambient temperatures and have no internal mixing device, making them simple to operate. In the absence of internal mixing mechanism, the Chinese dome digester is mixed via pressure variation during gas production, gas use and feeding. Since mixing is limited in household digesters, they are operated at low organic loading rates and long hydraulic retention time when compared with forced mixed reactors. This review analyses and presents the various types of domestic biogas plants and operating parameters, with emphasis on mixing. Experimental results of household reactors, forced mixed reactors with different mixing modes and intensities were also reviewed and compared.

- Abstract
The presence of multivalent ions in polymer-flooding produced water (PFPW) hampers its recycling mainly because i) they increase the risk of scaling and reservoir souring (sulfate), ii) they interfere with the viscosifying effect of the fresh polyelectrolyte. It is desirable to achieve the removal of most multivalent ions without completely desalting the stream. With the adequate process conditions, electrodialysis could help to achieve this goal, so this work focused on evaluating the removal of divalent ions from synthetic PFPW through varying operational conditions. The experimental work consisted on batch experiments run in an electrodialysis-stack composed of strong Neosepta ion-exchange membranes. Synthetic PFPW solutions containing a mixture of monovalent and divalent ions were desalted at four different current densities, and three different temperatures. Additionally, the effect of the dissolved polymer on the removal was assessed by performing half of the experiments on polymer-containing solutions and half of them on solutions without it. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to achieve preferential removal of divalent cations (calcium and magnesium) through electrodialysis, especially when employing low current densities (24 A/m2) and high temperature (40 °C). The removal of sulfate, a divalent anion, is also accelerated in these conditions. The presence of polyelectrolyte did not significantly affect the removal rate of divalent ions. Thus, it is concluded that meticulous application of ED to minimize concentrations of divalent ions in PFPW is a potential effective way for water and polymer recycling in enhanced oil recovery situations, as an alternative to the use of other non-selective desalination technologies.

- Abstract
Ozonation, sorption to granular activated carbon and aerobic degradation were compared as potential treatment methods for removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fractions and selected organic compounds from shale gas flowback water after pre-treatment in dissolved air flotation unit. Flowback water was characterised by high chemical oxygen demand and DOC. Low molecular weight (LMW) acids and neutral compounds were the most abundant organic fractions, corresponding to 47% and 35% of DOC respectively. Ozonation did not change distribution of organic carbon fractions and concentrations of detected individual organic compounds significantly. Sorption to activated carbon targeted removal of individual organic compounds with molecular weight >115 Da, whereas LMW compounds remained largely unaffected. Aerobic degradation was responsible for removal of LMW compounds and partial ammonium removal, whereas formation of intermediates with molecular weight of 200–350 Da was observed. Combination of aerobic degradation for LMW organics removal with adsorption to activated carbon for removal of non-biodegradable organics is proposed to be implemented between pre-treatment (dissolved air floatation) and desalination (thermal or membrane desalination) steps.

- Abstract
The potential water demand for fracturing fluids along with the possible flowback and produced water production is assessed for the Dutch Posidonia shale. Total water demand estimated for 25 years of the field development using historic data from the U.S. plays varies between 12.2 and 36.9 Mm3. The maximal annual water consumption of 0.95–2.88 Mm3 is expected in the peak years of shale gas production. These figures are much lower than the availability of any potential water sources, which include drinking water, fresh and brackish groundwater, river water, effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and sea water. River water is considered the most promising water source for fracturing fluids in the Dutch Posidonia shale based on its availability (>6·104 Mm3/year) and quality (only bacterial composition needs to be controlled). Total wastewater production for the whole period of the field development is estimated between 6.6 and 48.0 Mm3. Wastewater recycling can cover significant part of the source water demand for fracturing fluid. However, high mineral content of the wastewater as well as temporal and spatial discrepancies between wastewater production and water demand will form obstacles for wastewater recycling. The assessment framework developed in this study may be applied for other shale gas fields with high uncertainties regarding subsurface properties, connate formation water characteristics and future legislative framework.

- Abstract
The growing demand for energy because of population growth, lack of clean energy and inadequate availability of natural resources have led to the growing demand of anaerobic digestion technologies in rural areas of many developing countries. Biogas a renewable, clean and efficient source of alternative energy which can be used as a substitute for fuels such as firewood, charcoal and cattle dung, used by rural dwellers. The domestic digester is an example of an anaerobic digester usually applied in a single decentralized system mostly in rural areas of developing countries and can serve as energy solution to meet their cooking needs. Among all household digesters, the Chinese dome digester (CDD) is the most popular and most implemented reactor because of its reliability, requirement of low maintenance and long lifespan (Chapter 2). Mixing in the Chinese dome digester (CDD) depends on the change of slurry level in the digester and extension chamber during gas use and could be regarded as intermittent natural mixing. Mixing is an important process in anaerobic digestion for establishing contact between micro- organisms and feed, for homogenization of temperature throughout the digester, and preventing settling and floating layers. However, mixing is limited in the CDD and are therefore operated at long hydraulic retention times (> 40 days) and low influent total solid (TS) concentrations (≤7%) when compared to forced mixed reactors (intermittently or continuously), leading to a large reactor volume and higher cost (Chapter 2). In this thesis, mixing was optimized in the Chinese dome digester without the inclusion of moveable parts with lower water dilutions (high influent TS, 15%) at reduced hydraulic retention times 40 and 30 days. First, Chapter 3 examined the effect of higher volumetric gas production on mixing during the anaerobic digestion of cow manure in Chinese dome digesters (CDD) at ambient temperature (27-32º C) in comparison with mechanically mixed and unmi

- Abstract
The increasing legislation pressure, risks associated with micropollutants, and the insufficient efficacy of conventional WWTPs on their removal have formed a joint driving force that is boosting studies on more efficient treatment technology. The general objective of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding and further development of photochemical treatment processes for micropollutant removal from aqueous streams. Emphasis of this thesis is given to two topics: (1) Further development of UV/TiO2 technique by application of TNA as immobilized catalyst; (2) Development of alternative photochemical water treatment technique for micropollutant removal from wastewater. This thesis demonstrates that: (1) TiO2 nanotube array is a promising immobilized photocatalyst for the removal of micropollutants; (2) Red light induced methylene blue photosensitization provides an efficient process for micropollutants removal.

In the first article of this series a study of the K+ ···H2 O interaction is presented. The calculations are done with the local density approximation using the Xα-LCAO-DVM approach. The polarization of the water molecule in the complex are compared with the polarization of water in several electrostatic fields (homogeneous field, point charge, field of K+ cation). The effect of exchange repulsion on the polarization is analyzed. A decomposition of the interaction energy as computed in the Xα approach is carried out. This shows that the various effects of the interaction are well reproduced by this approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is used in water treatment systems, typically to remove pollutants such as natural organic matter, volatile organic compounds, chlorine, taste, and odor. GAC is also used as a key component of a new technology that combines a fluidized bed reactor with radio frequency electric fields for disinfection. So far, the effects of GAC on bacteria in these fluidized bed reactors are unclear. This paper describes a systematic study of the physico-chemical changes in five microbial media compositions caused by different concentrations (23–350¿g/L) of GAC, and the effects of these physico-chemical changes on the metabolic activity and survival of a model microorganism (Escherichia coli YMc10) in a fluidized bed reactor. The chemical adsorption taking place in suspensions with specific GAC changed nutritional, osmotic, and pH conditions in the investigated microbial media (LB, diluted LB, PBS, diluted PBS, and tap water), leading to a decay of the metabolic activity and survival of E. coli. Especially media that are poor in organic and mineral compounds (e.g., PBS) with suspended GAC showed a concentration decay of 3.5¿Log CFU/mL E. coli after 6¿h. Organic compounds depletion and severe pH variation were enhanced in the presence of higher GAC concentrations. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 2014;111: 2009–2018.

Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture, with funding of Dutch Horticultural Board, has described the history and background of electrochemically activated water and explored possibilities for applications within the agricultural sector. In the Netherlands, the use of activated water as a biocide is allowed since 2009. Active ingredients of activated water are chlorine gas, hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite. Together with a high oxidation-reduction potential (ORP 750-1100 mV) there is a broad activity against bacteria, fungi, viruses, algae, protozoa and nematodes. Agricultural applications of activated water are described for seed disinfection, cleaning equipment and packing materials, removal of biofilms from pipes, disinfection of flowers, fruits and vegetables. The recent development of ultrasonic atomization of activated water created new possibilities to treat crops and harvested products against pathogens without excessive volumes of water and disinfect air from pathogens. For applications in protected crops it is desirable that the corrosive properties of the activated water should be minimized and capacities of dispensing equipment must be enlarged.

The effectiveness of the advanced oxidation process (UV/H2O2) in decolorizing real textile wastewater polluted with commercial reactive dyes - Reactive Yellow 84 and Reactive Red 141 was investigated. All the experiments were performed in a lab-scale reactor with the original high pH of the wastewater. The dyeing wastewater was decolorized in 5 hours. After its acidification to pH 3 the decolorization process was more efficient. Full decolorization was then achieved in 2 hours and the decrease in COD exceeded 70%. The reaction rate constants obtained were as follows: at pH 11.4, 0.0065 min(-1); at pH 7, 0.0044 min(-1), and at pH 3, 0.019 min(-1), which testified to pH importance for UV/H2O2 oxidation process.
