We present multi-frequency (5-345 GHz) and multi-resolution radio observations of 1ES 1927+654, widely considered one of the most unusual and extreme changing-look active galactic nuclei (CL-AGN). The source was first designated a CL-AGN after an optical outburst in late 2017 and has since displayed considerable changes in X-ray emission, including the destruction and rebuilding of the X-ray corona in 2019-2020. Radio observations prior to 2023 show a faint and compact radio source typical of radio-quiet AGN. Starting in February 2023, 1ES 1927+654 began exhibiting a radio flare with a steep exponential rise, reaching a peak 60 times previous flux levels, and has maintained this higher level of radio emission for over a year to date. The 5-23 GHz spectrum is broadly similar to gigahertz-peaked radio sources, which are understood to be young radio jets less than ~1000 years old. Recent high-resolution VLBA observations at 23.5 GHz now show resolved extensions on either side of the core, with a separation of ~0.15 pc, consistent with a new and mildly relativistic bipolar outflow. A steady increase in the soft X-ray band (0.3-2 keV) concurrent with the radio may be consistent with jet-driven shocked gas, though further observations are needed to test alternate scenarios. The International Gamma-ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) has been surveying the sky above 20 keV since its launch in 2002 providing new insights into the nature of the sources that populate our Universe at soft gamma-ray energies. The latest IBIS/ISGRI survey lists 929 hard X-ray sources, of which 113 are reported as unidentified, i.e. lacking a lower energy counterpart or simply not studied in other wavebands. To overcome this lack of information, we either browsed the X-ray archives, or, if no data in the X-ray band were available, we requested Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations with the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on-board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Following this approach, we selected a sample of 10 objects for which X-ray data were key to investigate their nature. We found a single X-ray association for all of the sources, except for IGR J16267-3303, for which two X-ray detections were spotted within the IBIS positional uncertainty. We then browsed multi-waveband archives to search for counterparts to these X-ray detections at other wavelengths and analysed X-ray spectral properties to determine their nature and association with the high-energy emitter. As a result of our analysis, we identified the most likely counterpart for 7 sources, although in some cases its nature/class could not be definitely assessed on the basis of the information collected. Interestingly, SWIFT J2221.6+5952, first reported in the 105-month Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey, is the only source of the sample for which we did not find any counterpart at radio/optical/IR wavebands. Finally, we found that two IBIS source, IGR J17449-3037 and IGR J17596-2315 are positionally associated with a Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) object., Comment: 13 figures, 6 tables. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration, bright ($\sim$Jy) extragalactic bursts, whose production mechanism is still unclear. Recently, two repeating FRBs were found to have a physically associated persistent radio source of non-thermal origin. These two FRBs have unusually large Faraday rotation measure values likely tracing a dense magneto-ionic medium, consistent with synchrotron radiation originating from a nebula surrounding the FRB source. Recent theoretical arguments predict that, if the observed Faraday rotation measure mostly arises from the persistent radio source region, there should be a simple relation between the luminosity of the latter and the first. We report here the detection of a third, less luminous persistent radio source associated with the repeating FRB source FRB20201124A at a distance of 413 Mpc, significantly expanding the predicted relation into the low luminosity - low Faraday rotation measure regime ($<$1000 rad m-2). At lower values of the Faraday rotation measure, the expected radio luminosity falls below the limit of detection threshold for present-day radio telescopes. These findings support the idea that the persistent radio sources observed so far are generated by a nebula in the FRB environment, and that FRBs with low Faraday rotation measure may not show a persistent radio source because of a weaker magneto-ionic medium. This is generally consistent with models invoking a young magnetar as the central engine of the FRB, where the surrounding ionized nebula - or the interacting shock in a binary system - powers the persistent radio source., Comment: Accepted for publication on Nature

Supermassive black holes at the centre of active galactic nuclei power some of the most luminous objects in the Universe. Typically, very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of blazars have revealed only funnel-like morphologies with little information of the ejected plasma internal structure, or lacked the sufficient dynamic range to reconstruct the extended jet emission. Here we show microarcsecond-scale angular resolution images of the blazar 3C 279 obtained at 22 GHz with the space VLBI mission RadioAstron, which allowed us to resolve the jet transversely and reveal several filaments produced by plasma instabilities in a kinetically dominated flow. Our high angular resolution and dynamic range image suggests that emission features traveling down the jet may manifest as a result of differential Doppler-boosting within the filaments, as opposed to the standard shock-in-jet model invoked to explain blazar jet radio variability. Moreover, we infer that the filaments in 3C 279 are possibly threaded by a helical magnetic field rotating clockwise, as seen in the direction of the flow motion, with an intrinsic helix pitch angle of ~45 degrees in a jet with a Lorentz factor of ~13 at the time of observation., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures. In the past years, the results obtained by the WISSH quasar project provided a novel general picture on the distinctive multi-band properties of hyper-luminous ($L_{bol}>10^{47}$ erg/s) quasars at high redshift (z$\sim$2-4), unveiling interesting relations among active galactic nuclei, winds and interstellar medium, in these powerful sources at cosmic noon. Since 2022, we are performing a systematic and statistically-significant VLA study of the radio properties of WISSH. We carried out high-resolution VLA observations aiming at: 1) identifying young radio source from the broad-band spectral shape of these objects; 2) sample an unexplored high redshift/high luminosity regime, tracking possible evolutionary effects on the radio-loud/radio-quiet dichotomy; 3) quantifying orientation effects on the observed winds/outflows properties., Comment: To be published on "Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union", IAU symposium #378: "Black hole winds at all scales"

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are our best laboratories for studying extreme super-Eddington accretion. Most studies of these objects are of relatively persistent sources, however there is growing evidence to suggest a large fraction of these sources are transient. Here we present a sample of five newly reported transient ULXs in the galaxies NGC 4945, NGC 7793 and M81 serendipitously discovered in Swift/XRT observations. Swift monitoring of these sources have provided well sampled lightcurves, allowing for us to model the lightcurves with the disk instability model of Hameury & Lasota (2020) which implies durations of 60-400 days and that the mass accretion rate through the disk is close to or greater than the Eddington rate. Of the three source regions with prior HST imaging, color magnitude diagrams of the potential stellar counterparts show varying ages of the possible stellar counterparts. Our estimation of the rates of these sources in these three galaxies is 0.4-1.3 year$^{-1}$. We find that while persistent ULXs dominate the high end of galaxy luminosity functions, the number of systems that produce ULX luminosities are likely dominated by transient sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from the first 22 GHz space very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) imaging observations of M87 by RadioAstron. As a part of the Nearby AGN Key Science Program, the source was observed in Feb 2014 at 22 GHz with 21 ground stations, reaching projected $(u,v)$-spacings up to $\sim11\,$G$\lambda$. The imaging experiment was complemented by snapshot RadioAstron data of M87 obtained during 2013--2016 from the AGN Survey Key Science Program. Their longest baselines extend up to $\sim25\,$G$\lambda$. For all these measurements, fringes are detected only up to $\sim$2.8 Earth Diameter or $\sim$3 G$\lambda$ baseline lengths, resulting in a new image with angular resolution of $\sim150\,\mu$as or $\sim20$ Schwarzschild radii spatial resolution. The new image not only shows edge-brightened jet and counterjet structures down to submilliarcsecond scales but also clearly resolves the VLBI core region. While the overall size of the core is comparable to those reported in the literature, the ground-space fringe detection and slightly super-resolved RadioAstron image suggest the presence of substructures in the nucleus, whose minimum brightness temperature exceeds $T_{\rm B, min}\sim10^{12}\,$K. It is challenging to explain the origin of this record-high $T_{\rm B, min}$ value for M87 by pure Doppler boosting effect with a simple conical jet geometry and known jet speed. Therefore, this can be evidence for more extreme Doppler boosting due to a blazar-like small jet viewing angle or highly efficient particle acceleration processes occurring already at the base of the outflow., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Hyper-luminous Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) represent the ideal laboratory to investigate Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback mechanism since their formidable energy release causes powerful winds at all scales and thus the maximum feedback is expected. We aim at deriving the mean Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 WISE-SDSS Selected Hyper-luminous (WISSH) quasars. Since the SED provides a direct way to investigate the AGN structure, our goal is to understand if quasars at the bright end of the luminosity function have peculiar properties compared to the bulk of the population. We built a mean intrinsic SED after correcting for the dust extinction, absorption and emission lines and intergalactic medium absorption. We also derived bolometric, IR band and monochromatic luminosities together with bolometric corrections at lambda = 5100 A and 3 micron. We define a new relation for the 3 micron bolometric correction. We find that the mean SED of hyper-luminous WISSH QSOs is different from that of less luminous sources, i.e. a relatively lower X-ray emission and a near and mid IR excess which can be explained assuming a larger dust contribution. WISSH QSOs have stronger emission from both warm and very hot dust, the latter being responsible for shifting the typical dip of the AGN SED from 1.3 to 1.1 micron. We also derived the mean SEDs of two sub-samples created according to the presence of Broad Absorption Lines and equivalent width of CIV line. We confirm that BALs are X-ray weak and that they have a reddened UV-optical continuum. We also find that BALs tend to have stronger emission from the hot dust component. This analysis suggests that hyper-luminous QSOs have a peculiar SED compared to less luminous objects. It is therefore critical to use SED templates constructed exclusively from very bright quasars samples when dealing with particularly luminous sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 20 pages, 15 figures

A wide-frequency radio study of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is crucial to evaluate the intervening radiative mechanisms responsible for the observed emission and relate them with the underlying accretion physics. We present wide frequency (5-45 GHz), high-sensitivity (few microJy/beam), (sub)-kpc JVLA observations of a sample of 30 nearby (0.003 < z < 0.3) AGN detected by INTEGRAL/IBIS at hard-X-ray. We find a high detection fraction of radio emission at all frequencies, i.e. > 95 per cent at 5, 10 and 15 GHz and > 80 per cent at 22 and 45 GHz. Two sources out of 30 remain undetected at our high sensitivities. The nuclear radio morphology is predominantly compact, sometimes accompanied by extended jet-like structures, or more complex features. The radio Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of the radio cores appear either as a single or as a broken power-law, a minority of them exhibits a peaked component. The spectral slopes are either flat/inverted or steep, up to a break/peak or over the whole range. The sample mean SED shows a flat slope up to 15 GHz which steepens between 15 and 22 GHz and becomes again flat above 22 GHz. Significant radio-X-ray correlations are observed at all frequencies. About half of the sample features extended emission, clearly resolved by the JVLA, indicating low-power jets or large scale outflows. We present the first very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the blazar OJ287 carried out jointly with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) and the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 3.5 mm on April 2, 2017. Participation of phased-ALMA not only has improved the GMVA north-south resolution by a factor of ~3, but also has enabled fringe detection with signal-to-noise ratios up to 300 at baselines longer than 2 G{\lambda}. The high sensitivity has motivated us to image the data with the newly developed regularized maximum likelihood imaging methods, revealing the innermost jet structure with unprecedentedly high angular resolution. Our images reveal a compact and twisted jet extending along the northwest direction with two bends within the inner 200 {\mu}as that resembles a precessing jet in projection. The component at the southeastern end shows a compact morphology and high brightness temperature, and is identified as the VLBI core. An extended jet feature that lies at ~200 {\mu}as northwest of the core shows a conical shape in both total and linearly polarized intensity, and a bimodal distribution of the linear polarization electric vector position angle. We discuss the nature of this feature by comparing our observations with models and simulations of oblique and recollimation shocks with various magnetic field configurations. Our high-fidelity images also enabled us to search for possible jet features from the secondary supermassive black hole (SMBH) and test the SMBH binary hypothesis proposed for this source., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the first polarimetric space VLBI observations of OJ 287, observed with RadioAstron at 22 GHz during a perigee session on 2014 April 4 and five near-in-time snapshots, together with contemporaneous ground VLBI observations at 15, 43, and 86 GHz. Ground-space fringes were obtained up to a projected baseline of 3.9 Earth diameters during the perigee session, and at a record 15.1 Earth diameters during the snapshot sessions, allowing us to image the innermost jet at an angular resolution of $\sim50\mu$as, the highest ever achieved at 22 GHz for OJ 287. Comparison with ground-based VLBI observations reveals a progressive jet bending with increasing angular resolution that agrees with predictions from a supermassive binary black hole model, although other models cannot be ruled out. Spectral analyses suggest that the VLBI core is dominated by the internal energy of the emitting particles during the onset of a multi-wavelength flare, while the parsec-scale jet is consistent with being in equipartition between the particles and magnetic field. Estimated minimum brightness temperatures from the visibility amplitudes show a continued rising trend with projected baseline length up to $10^{13}$ K, reconciled with the inverse Compton limit through Doppler boosting for a jet closely oriented to the line of sight. The observed electric vector position angle suggests that the innermost jet has a predominantly toroidal magnetic field, which together with marginal evidence of a gradient in rotation measure across the jet width indicate that the VLBI core is threaded by a helical magnetic field, in agreement with jet formation models.

We report results from the first Earth-space VLBI observations of the Galactic Center supermassive black hole, Sgr A*. These observations used the space telescope Spektr-R of the RadioAstron project together with a global network of 20 ground telescopes, observing at a wavelength of 1.35cm. Spektr-R provided baselines up to 3.9 times the diameter of the Earth, corresponding to an angular resolution of approximately 55 microarcseconds and a spatial resolution of $5.5 R_{\rm Sch}$ at the source, where $R_{\rm Sch} \equiv 2 G M/c^2$ is the Schwarzschild radius of Sgr A*. Our short ground baseline measurements (<80 M\lambda) are consistent with an anisotropic Gaussian image, while our intermediate ground baseline measurements (100-250 M\lambda) confirm the presence of persistent image substructure in Sgr A*. Both features are consistent with theoretical expectations for strong scattering in the ionized interstellar medium, which produces Gaussian scatter-broadening on short baselines and refractive substructure on long baselines. We do not detect interferometric fringes on any of the longer ground baselines or on any ground-space baselines. While space VLBI offers a promising pathway to sharper angular resolution and the measurement of key gravitational signatures in black holes, such as their photon rings, our results demonstrate that space VLBI studies of Sgr A* will require sensitive observations at submillimeter wavelengths., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present the results from a full polarization study carried out with ALMA during the first VLBI campaign, which was conducted in Apr 2017 in the $\lambda$3mm and $\lambda$1.3mm bands, in concert with the Global mm-VLBI Array (GMVA) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), respectively. We determine the polarization and Faraday properties of all VLBI targets, including Sgr A*, M87, and a dozen radio-loud AGN. We detect high linear polarization fractions (2-15%) and large rotation measures (RM $>10^{3.3}-10^{5.5}$ rad m$^{-2}$). For Sgr A* we report a mean RM of $(-4.2\pm0.3) \times10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 1.3 mm, consistent with measurements over the past decade, and, for the first time, an RM of $(-2.1\pm0.1) \times10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 3 mm, suggesting that about half of the Faraday rotation at 1.3 mm may occur between the 3 mm photosphere and the 1.3 mm source. We also report the first unambiguous measurement of RM toward the M87 nucleus at mm wavelengths, which undergoes significant changes in magnitude and sign reversals on a one year time-scale, spanning the range from -1.2 to 0.3 $\times\,10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 3 mm and -4.1 to 1.5 $\times\,10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 1.3 mm. Given this time variability, we argue that, unlike the case of Sgr A*, the RM in M87 does not provide an accurate estimate of the mass accretion rate onto the black hole. We put forward a two-component model, comprised of a variable compact region and a static extended region, that can simultaneously explain the polarimetric properties observed by both the EHT and ALMA. Neutron star mergers produce a substantial amount of fast-moving ejecta, expanding outwardly for years after the merger. The interaction of these ejecta with the surrounding medium may produce a weak isotropic radio remnant, detectable in relatively nearby events. We use late-time radio observations of short duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) to constrain this model. Two samples of events were studied: four sGRBs that are possibly in the local (<200 Mpc) universe were selected to constrain the remnant non-thermal emission from the sub-relativistic ejecta, whereas 17 sGRBs at cosmological distances were used to constrain the presence of a proto-magnetar central engine, possibly re-energezing the merger ejecta. We consider the case of GRB~170817A/GW170817, and find that in this case the early radio emission may be quenched by the jet blast-wave. In all cases, for ejecta mass range of M_ej \lesssim 10^{-2} (5 * 10^{-2}) M_sun, we can rule out very energetic merger ejecta E_ej \gtrsim 5 * 10^{52}(10^{53}) erg, thus excluding the presence of a powerful magnetar as a merger remnant., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We present RadioAstron Space VLBI imaging observations of the BL Lac object S5 0716+71 made on January 3-4 2015 at a frequency of 22 GHz (wavelength $\lambda=1.3$ cm). The observations were made in the framework of the AGN Polarization Key Science Program. The source was detected on projected space-ground baselines up to 70 833 km (5.6 Earth diameters) for both, parallel hand and cross-hand interferometric visibilities. We have used these detections to obtain a full-polarimetric image of the blazar at an unprecedented angular resolution of 24 $\mu$as, the highest for this source to date. This enabled us to estimate the size of the radio core to be $<12\times5~\mu$as and to reveal a complex structure and a significant curvature of the blazar jet in the inner 100 $\mu$as, which is an indication that the jet viewing angle lies inside the opening angle of the jet conical outflow. Fairly highly (15%) linearly polarized emission is detected in a jet region of 19 $\mu$as in size, located 58 $\mu$as downstream from the core. The highest brightness temperature in the source frame is estimated to be $>2.2\times10^{13}$ K for the blazar core. This implies that the inverse Compton limit must be violated in the rest frame of the source, even for the largest Doppler factor $\delta\thicksim25$ reported for 0716+714., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables; accepted to ApJ

Imaging relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) at angular resolution significantly surpassing that of the ground-based VLBI at centimetre wavelengths is one of the key science objectives of the RadioAstron space-VLBI mission. There are three RadioAstron imaging key science programs that target both nearby radio galaxies and blazars, with one of the programs specifically focusing on polarimetry of the jets. The first images from these programs reach angular resolution of a few tens of microarcseconds and reveal unprecedented details about the jet collimation profile, magnetic field configuration, and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities along the flow in some of the most studied AGN (3C 84, BL Lac, 3C 273, S5 0836+710). We investigate the dichotomy between jetted and non-jetted Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), focusing on the fundamental differences of these two classes in the accretion physics onto the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). Our aim is to study and constrain the structure, kinematics and physical state of the nuclear environment in the Broad Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) PKS 2251+11. The high X-ray luminosity and the relative proximity make such AGN an ideal candidate for a detailed analysis of the accretion regions in radio galaxies. We performed a spectral and timing analysis of a $\sim$64 ks observation of PKS 2251+11 in the X-ray band with XMM-Newton. We modeled the spectrum considering an absorbed power law superimposed to a reflection component. We performed a time-resolved spectral analysis to search for variability of the X-ray flux and of the individual spectral components. We found that the power law has a photon index $\Gamma=1.8\pm 0.1$, absorbed by an ionized partial covering medium with a column density $N_H=(10.1\pm 0.8) \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, a ionization parameter $\log{\xi}=1.3\pm 0.1$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm and a covering factor $f\simeq90\%$. Considering a density of the absorber typical of the Broad Line Region (BLR), its distance from the central SMBH is of the order of $r\sim 0.1$ pc. An Fe K$\alpha$ emission line is found at 6.4 keV, whose intensity shows variability on time scales of hours. We derived that the reflecting material is located at a distance $r\gtrsim600r_s$, where $r_s$ is the Schwarzschild radius. Concerning the X-ray properties, we found that PKS 2251+11 does not differ significantly from the non-jetted AGNs, confirming the validity of the unified model in describing the inner regions around the central SMBH, but the lack of information regarding the state of the very innermost disk and SMBH spin still leave unconstrained the origin of the jet.

We present broadband polarimetric observations of a sample of high Faraday rotation measure (RM) AGN using the VLA telescope from 1 to 2 GHz, and 4 to 12 GHz. The sample (14 sources) consists of compact sources (linear resolution smaller than ~ 5 kpc) that are unpolarized at 1.4 GHz in the NVSS. Total intensity data have been modelled using combination of synchrotron components, revealing complex structure in their radio spectra. Depolarization modelling, through the so called qu-fitting, have been performed on the polarized data using an equation that attempts to simplify the process of fitting many different depolarization models that we can divide into two major categories: External Depolarization and Internal Depolarization models. Understanding which of the two mechanisms are the most representative, would help the qualitative understanding of the AGN jet environment, whether it is embedded in a dense external magnetoionic medium or if it is the jet-wind that causes the high RM and strong depolarization. This could help to probe the jet magnetic field geometry (e.g. helical or otherwise). This new high-sensitivity data, shows a complicated behaviour in the total intensity and polarization radio spectrum of individual sources. We observed the presence of several synchrotron components and Faraday components in their total intensity and polarized spectra. For the majority of our targets, (12 sources) the depolarization seems to be caused by a turbulent magnetic field. Thus, our main selection criteria (lack of polarization at 1.4 GHz in the NVSS), results in a sample of sources with very large RMs and depolarization due to turbulent magnetic fields local to the source. We present preliminary results of JVLA wideband full polarization observations of a sample of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with very high Rotation Measure (RM) values, a sign of extreme environment. Polarization properties show a complex behaviour such that the polarization angle (PA) and fractional polarization (fp) change dramatically within the wide band. The measured RM is not constant within the wide band. Its complex behaviour reflects the complexity of the medium with the presence of several Faraday components. The depolarization has been studied by modelling the variations of the Stokes parameters Q and U together with the polarization parameters (PA and fp) with wavelength using combinations of the simplest existing depolarization models. With this JVLA study we could spectrally resolve multiple polarized components of unresolved AGN. We present the first polarimetric space VLBI imaging observations at 22 GHz. BL Lacertae was observed in 2013 November 10 with the RadioAstron space VLBI mission, including a ground array of 15 radio telescopes. The instrumental polarization of the space radio telescope is found to be within 9%, demonstrating the polarimetric imaging capabilities of RadioAstron at 22 GHz. Ground-space fringes were obtained up to a projected baseline distance of 7.9 Earth's diameters in length, allowing us to image the jet in BL Lacertae with a maximum angular resolution of 21 $\mu$as, the highest achieved to date. We find evidence for emission upstream of the radio core, which may correspond to a recollimation shock at about 40 $\mu$as from the jet apex, in a pattern that includes other recollimation shocks at approximately 100 $\mu$as and 250 $\mu$as from the jet apex. Polarized emission is detected in two components within the innermost 0.5 mas from the core, as well as in some knots 3 mas downstream. Faraday rotation analysis, obtained from combining RadioAstron 22 GHz and ground-based 15 GHz and 43 GHz images, shows a gradient in rotation measure and Faraday corrected polarization vector as a function of position angle with respect to the core, suggesting that the jet in BL Lacertae is threaded by a helical magnetic field. The intrinsic de-boosted brightness temperature in the unresolved core exceeds $3\!\times\!10^{12}$ K, suggesting at the very least departure from equipartition of energy between the magnetic field and radiating particles., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report here the study, in the radio band, of a sample of candidates of high Rotation Measure (RM). The point-like objects (at kpc scale) were selected by choosing unpolarised sources from the NVSS which show significant linear polarisation at 10.45 GHz. Assuming in-band depolarisation, this feature suggests the presence of a very dense medium surrounding them in a combination of a strong magnetic field. Further single-dish observations were performed with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to characterise the SEDs of the sample and to well determine their RM in the 11 to 2 cm wavelength range. Besides, a wideband (L, S, C and X band ) full polarisation observational campaign was performed at the JVLA facility. It allows us to analyse the in-band RM for the most extreme objects. Some Effelsberg results and analysis, and preliminary JVLA results are presented. The observations reveal that sources with young, newly growing, radio components at high frequency (i.e. GPS and HFP sources) are characterised by a really dense and/or a magnetised medium that strongly rotates the polarisation angle at the different frequencies, leading to a high-RM., Comment: Paper accepted to by published on Astronomische Nachrichten Journal. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1510.01136

We characterised and studied, in the radio band, a sample of candidates of high Rotation Measure (RM). These point-like objects show a strong depolarisation at 21cm. This feature suggests the presence of a very dense medium surrounding them in a combination of a strong magnetic field. This work aims at selecting and studying a sample of radio sources with high RM, thus to study their physical conditions and their status with respect to their surrounding medium. We want to understand if any connection is present between the AGN hosting galaxy medium with some evolutionary track and/or some restarting phase of the AGN itself. Multifrequency single-dish observations were performed with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to define the initial sample, to characterise the SED of the final sample (30 targets) and to determine their RM in the 11 to 2 cm wavelength range. From the observations, the SED together with polarisation information, i.e. the fractional polarisation and the polarisation angle, have been determined. Three different object types were revealed from the SEDs analysis: Older, GPS-like and Mixed. For each of the targets, the rotation measure has been found and the depolarisation has been modelled. No significant correlation have been found between the depolarisation behaviours and the SEDs, while a correlation has been found between sources with mixed SED (with an old component at low frequency and compact components at high frequencies) and high values of the rotation measure (with values in the rest frame larger than 1000 rad/m^2). This work helps us to define and identify a sample of sources with high RM. From the analysis we can conclude that the sources showing a restarting phase at high frequency (with a Mixed SED), are characterised by a really dense and/or a magnetised medium that strongly rotates the polarisation angle at the different frequencies, leading to a high RM., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The radio galaxy 3C84 is a representative of gamma-ray-bright misaligned active galactic nuclei (AGN) and one of the best laboratories to study the radio properties of subparsec scale jets. We discuss here the past and present activity of the nuclear region within the central 1pc and the properties of subparsec-sized components C1, C2 and C3. We compare these results with the high resolution space-VLBI image at 5GHz obtained with the RadioAstron satellite and we shortly discuss the possible correlation of radio emission with the gamma-ray emission., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures.
