Simple Summary: One male adult crested porcupine was found moribund in the province of Siena (Tuscany, Central Italy), and died soon after being recovered by a wildlife rescue service. At necropsy, a rounded nodule was noted on the surface of the heart. Differential diagnoses included abscess, systemic tuberculosis, parasitic cyst, and neoplasia. Histology was performed on the lesion, revealing a cystic formation in the epicardium. The cyst was lined by stratified squamous epithelium and was filled with lamellar keratin without hair shafts. The lesion was diagnosed as an epicardial epidermoid cyst (EC). EC are most commonly found in the skin, both in human and animal patients, although rarely they can occur in various internal organs. However, cardiac EC has not been reported before in animals. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of EC in a wild animal species. The crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata) is present in central Italy with an estimated population of 1800 individuals. Despite the local abundance, little data are available on the diseases affecting free-ranging individuals. We describe a case of an epidermoid cyst (EC) in a male adult porcupine found in the municipality of Sovicille, province of Siena (Tuscany). At necropsy, a firm rounded nodule was noted on the left ventricle wall. Histological examination revealed a cystic formation lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The cyst was filled with lamellar keratin, while hair shafts were not present. The adjacent epicardium was infiltrated by lymphoplasmacytic cells in reaction to the rupture of the cyst with the spilling of keratinaceous debris. The lesion was diagnosed as a ruptured epicardial epidermoid cyst. EC are most commonly found in the skin, both in human and animal patients, though infrequently, they can occur in any internal organ. Cardiac EC has not been reported in domestic animals, and this is the first report of EC in a wild animal species. Clinical veterinarians should consider the possibility of similar cardiac lesions in captive subjects since the long lifespan of these rodents could allow the growth of the cyst with the compression of the adjacent tissues. Energy sustainability and interconnectivity are the two main pillars on which cutting‐edge architecture is based and require the realization of energy and intelligent devices that can be fully integrated into buildings, capable of meeting stringent regulatory requirements and operating in real‐world conditions. Luminescent solar concentrators, particularly those based on near‐infrared emitting reabsorption‐free quantum dots, are considered good candidates for the realization of semi‐transparent photovoltaic glazing, but despite important advances in optical property engineering strategies, studies of finished devices suitable for real‐world operation are still lacking. In this paper, the first example of a fully assembled quantum dot luminescent solar concentrator‐based photovoltaic glazing is demonstrated that meets all international standards for photovoltaic and building elements. It is also shown that these devices are capable of functioning as efficient Visible Light Communication (VLC) receivers even under full sunlight, thus combining energy and wireless connectivity functions in a realistic solution for smart, sustainable buildings. Fluorescent concentrators (FCs) have been recently proposed as optical condensers for visible light communications (VLC) and optical wireless communication (OWC) receivers, with advantages over conventional optical stages in terms of optical gain and field of view (FoV). However, the use of FC‐based receivers in real‐world scenarios is hampered by the need for large resilience of the involved chromophores to sunlight exposure, and availability of large‐area FC substrates with suitable optochemical properties. This paper presents an innovative OWC system, based on a high‐power blue LED and a large‐area FC‐based on CuInS2 quantum dots (Q‐Dots) as receiving optical stage. A thorough characterization of the FC material in terms of conversion efficiency, temporal response, and FoV is provided, along with a full set of outdoor measurements. The combination of the Q‐Dots fluorophores chemico‐physical properties with the strong DC rejection granted by the design receiver stage allows error‐free VLC link distances up to 60 m and baud rates up to 1 Mb/s. This work represents the first demonstration of long‐range VLC links under strong solar irradiance using large‐area FC antennas and paves the way to deployment of long‐range free‐space optical links with minimal susceptibility to misalignments and pointing instabilities between receiver and transmitter. The MTERF family is a large protein family, identified in metazoans and plants, which consists of four subfamilies, MTERF1, 2, 3 and 4. Mitochondrial localisation was predicted for the vast majority of MTERF family members and demonstrated for the characterised MTERF proteins. The main structural feature of MTERF proteins is the presence of a modular architecture, based on repetitions of a 30-residue module, the mTERF motif, containing leucine zipper-like heptads. The MTERF family includes transcription termination factors: human mTERF, sea urchin mtDBP and Drosophila DmTTF. In addition to terminating transcription, they are involved in transcription initiation and in the control of mtDNA replication. This multiplicity of functions seems to flank differences in the gene organisation of mitochondrial genomes. MTERF2 and MTERF3 play antithetical roles in controlling mitochondrial transcription: that is, mammalian and Drosophila MTERF3 act as negative regulators, whereas mammalian MTERF2 functions as a positive regulator. Both proteins contact mtDNA in the promoter region, perhaps establishing interactions, either mutual or with other factors. Regulation of MTERF gene expression in human and Drosophila depends on nuclear transcription factors NRF-2 and DREF, respectively, and proceeds through pathways which appear to discriminate between factors positively or negatively acting in mitochondrial transcription. In this emerging scenario, it appears that MTERF proteins act to coordinate mitochondrial transcription.
