This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of genomic prediction for productive and reproductive traits in Guzerá cattle using single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP). Evaluations included the 305-day cumulative yields (first lactation, in kg) of milk, lactose, protein, fat, and total solids; adjusted body weight (kg) at the ages of 450, 365, and 210 days; and age at first calving (in days), from a database containing 197,283 measurements from Guzerá males and females born between 1954 and 2018. The pedigree included 433,823 animals spanning up to 14 overlapping generations. A total of 1618 animals were genotyped. The analyses were performed using ssGBLUP and traditional BLUP methods. Predictive ability and bias were accessed using cross-validation: predictive ability was similar between the methods and ranged from 0.27 to 0.47 for the genomic-based model and from 0.30 to 0.45 for the pedigree-based model; the bias was also similar between the methods, ranging from 0.88 to 1.35 in the genomic-based model and from 0.96 to 1.41 in the pedigree-based model. The individual accuracies of breeding values were evidently increased in the genomic evaluation, with values ranging from 0.41 to 0.56 in the genomic-based model and from 0.26 to 0.54 in the pedigree-based model. Even based on a small number of genotyped animals and a small database for some traits, the results suggest that ssGBLUP is feasible and may be applied to national genetic evaluation of the breed to increase the accuracy of breeding values without greatly impacting predictive ability and bias., (© 2023. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for 305-day cumulative milk yield and components, growth, and reproductive traits in Guzerá cattle., Methods: The evaluated traits were 305-day first-lactation cumulative yields (kg) of milk (MY305), fat (FY305), protein (PY305), lactose (LY305), and total solids (SY305); age at first calving (AFC) in days; adjusted scrotal perimeter (cm) at the ages of 365 (SP365) and 450 (SP450) days; and adjusted body weight (kg) at the ages of 210 (W210), 365 (W365), and 450 (W450) days. The (co)variance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood method for single-trait, bi-trait and tri-trait analyses. Contemporary groups and additive genetic effects were included in the general mixed model. Maternal genetic and permanent environmental effects were also included for W210., Results: The direct heritability estimates ranged from 0.16 (W210) to 0.32 (MY305). The maternal heritability estimate for W210 was 0.03. Genetic correlation estimates among milk production traits and growth traits ranged from 0.92 to 0.99 and from 0.92 to 0.99, respectively. For milk production and growth traits, the genetic correlations ranged from 0.33 to 0.56. The genetic correlations among AFC and all other traits were negative (-0.43 to -0.27). Scrotal perimeter traits and body weights showed genetic correlations ranging from 0.41 to 0.46, and scrotal perimeter and milk production traits showed genetic correlations ranging from 0.11 to 0.30. The phenotypic correlations were similar in direction (same sign) and lower than the corresponding genetic correlations., Conclusion: These results suggest the viability and potential of joint selection for dairy and beef traits in Guzerá cattle, taking into account reproductive traits.

The present study evaluated the heat stress response pattern of dual-purpose Guzerá cattle for test-day (TD) milk yield records of first lactation and estimated genetic parameters and trends related to heat stress. A total of 31,435 TD records from 4,486 first lactations of Guzerá cows, collected between 1986 and 2012, were analysed. Two random regression models considered days in milk (DIM) and/or temperature × humidity-dependent (THI) covariate. Impacts of -0.037, -0.019 and -0.006 kg/day/THI for initial and intermediate stages of lactation were observed when considering the mean maximum daily temperature and humidity to calculate THI. Heritability estimates ranged from 0.16 to 0.35 throughout lactation and THI values, suggesting the possibility to expect gains from selection for such trait. The variable trajectory of breeding values for dual-purpose Guzerá sires in response to changes in THI values confirms that the genotype × environment interaction due to heat stress can have some effect on TD milk yield. Despite the high dairy performance of Guzerá cattle under heat stress, estimated genetic trends showed a progressive reduction in heat tolerance. This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters of milk (305-day milk yield (MY305)), growth (weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), and weight at 550 days (W550)), and reproductive (age at first calving (AFC)) traits in Guzerá cattle by using Bayesian multiple-trait models. Systematic effects included sex and age at calving for the growth and milk traits, respectively. The additive genetic and contemporary groups (herd and year and season of birth) were included as random effects. Additionally, maternal genetic and permanent effects were also included as random effects for the WW. The heritability estimates were 0.29 (MY305), 0.42 (WW), 0.49 (YW), 0.56 (W550), and 0.25 (AFC). The genetic correlations among the growth traits were higher than 0.83; between the MY305 and WW, MY305 and YW, and MY305 and W550, the genetic correlations were 0.25, 0.32, and 0.36, respectively. The AFC was negatively correlated with the milk and growth traits. These results suggest the viability and potential of the joint selection for milk, beef, and reproductive traits in Guzerá cattle.

The main objective of this study was to verify genetic trends for milk production (MY305) and age at first calving (AFC). Were also considered levels of inbreeding practiced in the Brazilian dual-purpose Guzerá population (T POP ) comparing it with the same parameters estimated for two sub-populations derived from the reference (T POP ): female donors submitted to ovum-pick up (D POP ) and in vitro embryos produced (E POP ) between 2003 and 2013. Estimated breeding values (EBV) and inbreeding coefficients (F) were regressed by the year of birth (or year of in vitro fertilization) of each animal or embryo in order to obtain annual trends for these parameters separately for each of the three populations studied. A positive quadratic (β 2  = +0.000075) effect was detected for the F values in T POP . Both D POP and E POP showed positive linear coefficients (β 1 ), respectively, +0.00084 (P < 0.001) and +0.00024 (P > 0.05). Annual mean F for E POP was higher than T POP and D POP through the time series studied. The frequency of individuals with more than 7% F was higher in D POP . Genetic trends for AFC were -0.187 days/year (P > 0.05); -0.557 days/year (P < 0.05) and -1.48 days/year (P < 0.05), respectively for T POP ; D POP and E POP . Genetic trends for MY305 were +6.75 kg/year (P < 0.001); +8.2 kg/year (P < 0.001) and +10.5 kg/year (P < 0.05), respectively for T POP ; D POP and E POP . For both traits analyzed, E POP showed the highest regression coefficients, which confirms a higher selection pressure and lower generation intervals previously expected from this sub-population. Results reported in the present study suggest that mean F is increasing in the Guzerá population. Efforts for controlling inbred mating on in vitro fertilization should be considered, as the presence of a bottleneck effect seems to be getting shape on D POP and E POP ., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Cryptic relatedness is a confounding factor in genetic diversity and genetic association studies. Development of strategies to reduce cryptic relatedness in a sample is a crucial step for downstream genetic analyses. This study uses a node selection algorithm, based on network degrees of centrality, to evaluate its applicability and impact on evaluation of genetic diversity and population stratification. 1,036 Guzerá (Bos indicus) females were genotyped using Illumina Bovine SNP50 v2 BeadChip. Four strategies were compared. The first and second strategies consist on a iterative exclusion of most related individuals based on PLINK kinship coefficient (φij) and VanRaden's φij, respectively. The third and fourth strategies were based on a node selection algorithm. The fourth strategy, Network G matrix, preserved the larger number of individuals with a better diversity and representation from the initial sample. Determining the most probable number of populations was directly affected by the kinship metric. Network G matrix was the better strategy for reducing relatedness due to producing a larger sample, with more distant individuals, a more similar distribution when compared with the full data set in the MDS plots and keeping a better representation of the population structure. Resampling strategies using VanRaden's φij as a relationship metric was better to infer the relationships among individuals. Moreover, the resampling strategies directly impact the genomic inflation values in genomewide association studies. The use of the node selection algorithm also implies better selection of the most central individuals to be removed, providing a more representative sample., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Inbreeding has been associated with the impairment of reproductive performance in many cattle breeds. Although the usage of reproductive biotechnologies has been increasing in bovine populations, not much attention has been given to the impact of inbreeding over cow's performance on artificial reproduction. The objective of this study was to estimate the impact of inbreeding on in vitro embryo production in a Guzerá breed population. The inbreeding coefficient (F), calculated as half of the co-ancestry of the individual's parents, was used as an estimate of inbreeding. The inbreeding coefficients of the donor, sire (used on in vitro fertilization) and of the embryos were included, separately, in the proposed models either as classificatory or continuous variables (linear and quadratic effects). The percentage of non-inbred individuals (or embryos) and mean F of donors, embryos and sires were 29.38%; 35.76%; 42.86% and 1.98±2.68; 1.32±3.13; 2.08±2.79, respectively. Two different models were considered, one for oocyte production traits and other for embryo production traits. The increase of F of the donor significantly (P<0.05) impaired the number of viable oocytes (N OV), number of grade I oocytes (N GI) and number of cleaved embryos (N CLV). Moreover, the donor's F influenced the percentage of grade I oocytes (P GI), percentage of viable embryos (P EMB) and percentage of cleaved embryos that turned into embryos (P CXE). No significant (P>0.05) effects were observed for the sire (father of the embryos) inbreeding coefficient over the traits analysed. Embryo's F influenced (P<0.05) the number of viable embryos (N EMB), percentage of viable embryos (P EMB) and percentage of cleaved embryos that turn into embryos (P CXE). Results suggested that an increase in the inbreeding coefficient might impair the embryos ability to survive through challenges imposed by the in vitro environment. Submitting highly inbred Guzerá female donors to in vitro embryo production may, in the long-term, have negative implications on the number of embryos obtained per cow and increase the relative costs of the improvement programmes based on this technology. High levels of inbreeding should be avoided when selecting Guzerá female donors and planning in vitro fertilization mating.

Four models for in vitro embryo production traits in Guzerá cattle were compared: Gaussian (untransformed variable - LIN and transformed in logarithmic scale - LOG), Poisson (POI) and zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP). Data consisted of 5716 ovum pick-up and in vitro fertilization records performed in 1205 cows from distinct regions of Brazil. Analyzed count traits were the number of viable oocytes (NOV), number of grade I oocytes (NGI), number of degenerated oocytes (NDG), number of cleaved embryos (NCLV) and number of viable produced embryos (NEMB). Heritability varied from 0.17 (LIN) to 0.25 (POI) for NOV; 0.08 (LOG) to 0.18 (ZIP) for NGI; 0.12 (LIN) to 0.20 (POI) for NDG; 0.13 (LIN) to 0.19 (POI) for NCLV; 0.10 (LIN) to 0.20 (POI) for NEMB depending on the considered model. The estimated repeatability varied from 0.53 (LOG) to 0.63 (POI) for NOV; 0.22 (LOG) to 0.39 (ZIP) for NGI; 0.29 (LIN) to 0.42 (ZIP) for NDG; 0.42 (LIN) to 0.59 (POI) for NCLV; 0.36 (LIN) to 0.51 (POI) for NEMB. The goodness of fit, measured by deviance information criterion and mean squared residuals, suggested superiority of POI and ZIP over Gaussian models. Estimated breeding values (EBV) obtained by different models were highly correlated, varying from 0.92 for NOV (between LIN-POI) and 0.99 for NGI (between POI-ZIP). The number of coincident animals on the 10% top EBV showed lower similarities. We recommend POI and ZIP models as the most adequate for genetic analysis of in vitro embryo production traits in Guzerá cattle.
