In stars that lie on the main sequence in the Hertzsprung Russel diagram, like our sun, hydrogen is fused to helium in a number of nuclear reaction chains and series, such as the proton-proton chain and the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycles. Precisely determined thermonuclear rates of these reactions lie at the foundation of the standard solar model. This review, the third decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of hydrogen-burning stars, is motivated by the great advances made in recent years by solar neutrino observatories, putting experimental knowledge of the proton-proton chain neutrino fluxes in the few-percent precision range. The basis of the review is a one-week community meeting held in July 2022 in Berkeley, California, and many subsequent digital meetings and exchanges. Each of the relevant reactions of solar and quiescent stellar hydrogen burning is reviewed here, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Recommendations for the state of the art of the astrophysical S-factor and its uncertainty are formulated for each of them. Several other topics of paramount importance for the solar model are reviewed, as well: recent and future neutrino experiments, electron screening, radiative opacities, and current and upcoming experimental facilities. Absolute cross sections measured using electromagnetic devices to separate and detect heavy recoiling ions need to be corrected for charge state fractions. Accurate prediction of charge state distributions using theoretical models is not always a possibility, especially in energy and mass regions where data is sparse. As such, it is often necessary to measure charge state fractions directly. In this paper we present a novel method of using a scintillation screen along with a CMOS camera to image the charge dispersed beam after a set of magnetic dipoles. A measurement of the charge state distribution for 88Sr passing through a natural carbon foil is performed. Using a Bayesian model to extract statistically meaningful uncertainties from these images, we find agreement between the new method and a more traditional method using Faraday cups. Future work is need to better understand systematic uncertainties. Our technique offers a viable method to measure charge state distributions.

Physics models typically contain adjustable parameters to reproduce measured data. While some parameters correspond directly to measured features in the data, others are unobservable. These unobservables can, in some cases, cause ambiguities in the extraction of observables from measured data, or lead to questions on the physical interpretation of fits that require these extra parameters. We propose a method based on deep learning to extract values of observables directly from the data without the need for unobservables. The key to our approach is to label the training data for the deep learning model with only the observables. After training, the deep learning model can determine the values of observables from measured data with no ambiguities arising from unobservables. We demonstrate this method on the phenomenological R-matrix that is widely utilized in nuclear physics to extract resonance parameters from cross section data. Our deep learning model based on Transformers successfully predicts nuclear properties from measurements with no need for the channel radius and background pole parameters required in traditional R-matrix analyses. Details and limitations of this method, which may be useful for studies of a wide range of phenomena, are discussed.

Measurements of the elastic scattering cross section of 3He and 4He are important in order to improve constraints on theoretical models of 4He(3He,g)7Be, a key reaction in Big Bang nucleosynthesis and solar neutrino production. The astrophysical S-factor for this reaction is a significant source of uncertainty in the standard solar-model prediction of the 7Be and 8B solar neutrino fluxes. The elastic scattering measurements reported in the literature do not extend to low energies and lack proper uncertainty quantification. A new measurement of the 4He(3He,3He)4He reaction has been made at center-of-mass energies Ec.m. = 0.38-3.13 MeV using the Scattering of Nuclei in Inverse Kinematics (SONIK) scattering chamber: a windowless, extended gas target surrounded by an array of 30 collimated silicon charged particle detectors situated at TRIUMF. This is the first elastic scattering measurement of 3He+4He made below 500 keV and it has greater angular range and better precision than previous measurements. The elastic scattering data were analyzed using both R-matrix and Halo Effective Field Theory (Halo EFT) frameworks, and values of the s-wave scattering length and effective range were extracted. The resulting improvement in knowledge of the s-wave effective-range function at low energies will reduce the overall uncertainty in S34 at solar energies., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

A possible mechanism to explain the origin of the light $p$-nuclei in the Galaxy is the nucleosynthesis in the proton-rich neutrino-driven wind ejecta of core-collapse supernovae via the $\nu p$-process. However this production scenario is very sensitive to the underlying supernova dynamics and the nuclear physics input. As far as the nuclear uncertainties are concerned, the breakout from the $pp$-chains via the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction has been identified as an important link which can influence the nuclear flow and therefore the efficiency of the $\nu p$-process. However its reaction rate is poorly known over the relevant temperature range, T = 1.5-3 GK. We report on the first direct measurement of two resonances of the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction with previously unknown strengths using an intense radioactive $^7$Be beam from the ISAC facility and the DRAGON recoil separator in inverse kinematics. We have decreased the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction rate uncertainty to $\sim$ 9.4-10.7% over the relevant temperature region., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We have performed the first direct measurement of two resonances of the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction with unknown strengths using an intense radioactive $^7$Be beam and the DRAGON recoil separator. We report on the first measurement of the 1155 and 1110 keV resonance strengths of $1.73 \pm 0.25(stat.) \pm 0.40(syst.)$ eV and $125 ^{+27}_{-25}(stat.) \pm 15(syst.)$ meV, respectively. The present results have reduced the uncertainty in the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction rate to $\sim$ 9.4-10.7% over T = 1.5-3 GK, which is relevant for nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven outflows of core-collapse supernovae ($\nu p$-process). We present results from direct measurements of the $^{27}{\rm Al}(\alpha,n)$ thick target yield from laboratory incident energies $E_{\alpha}\approx$ 3$-$5~MeV, performed with the $^{3}$HeBF$_{3}$ Giant Barrel (HeBGB) neutron detector at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. Our measurements have a small energy cadence in order to address discrepancies and sparseness of thick-target yield data sets existing for this energy region. We find general agreement with existing data sets, including yields derived from cross section data, while resolving a discrepancy between existing thick-target yield data sets for $E_{\alpha}\approx4-5$~MeV. However, for $E_{\alpha}<3.5$~MeV, our results are substantially lower than previous thick-target yield data and somewhat larger than yields calculated from existing cross section data. Our data complete the energy-range needed for estimates of the $^{27}{\rm Al}(\alpha,n)$ contribution to neutrino and dark matter detector backgrounds and result in increased viability of $^{27}{\rm Al}(\alpha,n)$ as a plasma diagnostic tool at fusion facilities such as the National Ignition Facility., Comment: Accepted to Nuclear Science and Engineering

$(\alpha,n)$ reactions play an important role in nuclear astrophysics and applications and are an important background source in neutrino and dark matter detectors. Measurements of total $(\alpha,n)$ cross sections employing direct neutron detection often have a considerable systematic uncertainty associated with the energy-dependent neutron detection efficiency and the unknown initial neutron energy distribution. The $^{3}{\rm He}\,{\rm BF}_{3}$ Giant Barrel (HeBGB) neutron detector was built at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory at Ohio University to overcome this challenge. HeBGB offers a near-constant neutron detection efficiency of ($7.5\pm 1.2$) \% over the neutron energy range 0.01 MeV -- 9.00 MeV, removing a significant source of systematic uncertainty present in earlier $(\alpha,n)$ cross section measurements.

Nuclear reactions of interest for astrophysics and applications often rely on statistical model calculations for nuclear reaction rates, particularly for nuclei far from $\beta$-stability. However, statistical model parameters are often poorly constrained, where experimental constraints are particularly sparse for exotic nuclides. For example, our understanding of the breakout from the NiCu cycle in the astrophysical rp-process is currently limited by uncertainties in the statistical properties of the proton-rich nucleus $^{60}$Zn. We have determined the nuclear level density of $^{60}$Zn using neutron evaporation spectra from $^{58}$Ni($^3$He, n) measured at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory. We compare our results to a number of theoretical predictions, including phenomenological, microscopic, and shell model based approaches. Notably, we find the $^{60}$Zn level density is somewhat lower than expected for excitation energies populated in the $^{59}$Cu(p,$\gamma$)$^{60}$Zn reaction under rp-process conditions. This includes a level density plateau from roughly 5-6 MeV excitation energy, which is counter to the usual expectation of exponential growth and all theoretical predictions that we explore. A determination of the spin-distribution at the relevant excitation energies in $^{60}$Zn is needed to confirm that the Hauser-Feshbach formalism is appropriate for the $^{59}$Cu(p,$\gamma$)$^{60}$Zn reaction rate at X-ray burst temperatures., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

A workshop on The Next Generation Gamma-Ray Sources sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy, was held November 17--19, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. The goals of the workshop were to identify basic and applied research opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear physics that would be made possible by the beam capabilities of an advanced laser Compton beam facility. To anchor the scientific vision to realistically achievable beam specifications using proven technologies, the workshop brought together experts in the fields of electron accelerators, lasers, and optics to examine the technical options for achieving the beam specifications required by the most compelling parts of the proposed research programs. An international assembly of participants included current and prospective $\gamma$-ray beam users, accelerator and light-source physicists, and federal agency program managers. Sessions were organized to foster interactions between the beam users and facility developers, allowing for information sharing and mutual feedback between the two groups. The workshop findings and recommendations are summarized in this whitepaper.

40K plays a significant role in the radiogenic heating of earth-like exoplanets, which can affect the development of a habitable environment on their surfaces. The initial amount of 40K in the interior of these planets depends on the composition of the interstellar clouds from which they formed. Within this context, nuclear reactions that regulate the production of 40K during stellar evolution can play a critical role. In this study, we constrain for the first time the astrophysical reaction rate of 40K(n,p)40Ar, which is responsible for the destruction of 40K during stellar nucleosynthesis. We performed differential cross-section measurements on the 40Ar(p,n)40K reaction, for six energies in the center-of-mass between 3.2 and 4.0 MeV and various angles between 0-deg and 135-deg. The experiment took place at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory at Ohio University using the beam swinger target location and a standard neutron time-of-flight technique. The total and partial cross-sections varied with energy due to the contribution from isobaric analog states and Ericson type fluctuations. The energy-averaged neutron angular distributions were symmetrical relative to 90-deg and consistent with the theoretical predictions of the statistical model. Based on the experimental data, local transmission coefficients were extracted and were used to calculate the astrophysical reaction rates of 40Ar(p,n)40K and 40K(n,p)40Ar reactions. Our results support that the destruction rate of 40K in massive stars via the 40K(n,p)40Ar reaction is larger compared to previous estimates. This result directly affects the predicted stellar yields of 40K from nucleosynthesis, which is a critical input parameter for the galactic chemical evolution models that are currently employed for the study of significant properties of exoplanets., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, submitted to PRC (revised manuscript after referee's review)

The astrophysical $S$-factor for the radiative proton capture reaction on $^7$Be ($S_{17}$) at low energies is affected by the $s$-wave scattering lengths. We report the measurement of elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for the $^7$Be+p system in the center-of-mass energy range 0.474 - 2.740 MeV and center-of-mass angular range of 70$^\circ$- 150$^\circ$. A radioactive $^7$Be beam produced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility was accelerated and bombarded a thin polypropylene (CH$_{2}$)$_\text n$ target. Scattered ions were detected in the segmented Silicon Detector Array. Using an $\textit{R}$-matrix analysis of ORNL and Louvain-la-Neuve cross section data, the $s$-wave scattering lengths for channel spins 1 and 2 were determined to be 17.34$^{+1.11}_{-1.33}$ and -3.18$^{+0.55}_{-0.50}$ fm, respectively. The uncertainty in the $s$-wave scattering lengths reported in this work is smaller by a factor of 5-8 compared to the previous measurement, which may reduce the overall uncertainty in $S_{17}$ at zero energy. The level structure of $^8$B is discussed based upon the results from this work. Evidence for the existence of 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ levels in $^8$B at 1.9 and 2.21 MeV, respectively, is observed.

The normalized $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) cross section ratio has been measured using the NIFFTE fission Time Projection Chamber from the reaction threshold to $30$~MeV. The fissionTPC is a two-volume MICROMEGAS time projection chamber that allows for full three-dimensional reconstruction of fission-fragment ionization profiles from neutron-induced fission. The measurement was performed at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, where the neutron energy is determined from neutron time-of-flight. The $^{238}$U(n,f)/$^{235}$U(n,f) ratio reported here is the first cross section measurement made with the fissionTPC, and will provide new experimental data for evaluation of the $^{238}$U(n,f) cross section, an important standard used in neutron-flux measurements. Use of a development target in this work prevented the determination of an absolute normalization, to be addressed in future measurements. Instead, the measured cross section ratio has been normalized to ENDF/B-VIII.$\beta$5 at 14.5 MeV.

The creation of carbon and oxygen in our universe is one of the forefront questions in nuclear astrophysics. The determination of the abundance of these elements is key to both our understanding of the formation of life on earth and to the life cycles of stars. While nearly all models of different nucleosynthesis environments are affected by the production of carbon and oxygen, a key ingredient, the precise determination of the reaction rate of 12C(a,g)16O, has long remained elusive. This is owed to the reaction's inaccessibility, both experimentally and theoretically. Nuclear theory has struggled to calculate this reaction rate because the cross section is produced through different underlying nuclear mechanisms. Isospin selection rules suppress the E1 component of the ground state cross section, creating a unique situation where the E1 and E2 contributions are of nearly equal amplitudes. Experimentally there have also been great challenges. Measurements have been pushed to the limits of state of the art techniques, often developed for just these measurements. The data have been plagued by uncharacterized uncertainties, often the result of the novel measurement techniques, that have made the different results challenging to reconcile. However, the situation has markedly improved in recent years, and the desired level of uncertainty, about 10%, may be in sight. In this review the current understanding of this critical reaction is summarized. The emphasis is placed primarily on the experimental work and interpretation of the reaction data, but discussions of the theory and astrophysics are also pursued. The main goal is to summarize and clarify the current understanding of the reaction and then point the way forward to an improved determination of the reaction rate.

The $^{12}$C(n, 2n)$^{11}$C cross section was measured from just below threshold to 26.5 MeV using the Pelletron accelerator at Ohio University. Monoenergetic neutrons, produced via the $^3$H(d,n)$^4$He reaction, were allowed to strike targets of polyethylene and graphite. Activation of both targets was measured by counting positron annihilations resulting from the $\beta^+$ decay of $^{11}$C. Annihilation gamma rays were detected, both in coincidence and singly, using back-to-back NaI detectors. The incident neutron flux was determined indirectly via $^{1}$H(n,p) protons elastically scattered from the polyethylene target. The Edwards Accelerator Laboratory at Ohio University is the hub for a vibrant program in low energy nuclear physics. Research performed with the lab's 4.5MV tandem accelerator spans a variety of topics, including nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, nuclear energy, homeland security, and materials science. The Edwards Lab hosts a variety of capabilities, including unique features such as the beam swinger with neutron time-of-flight tunnel and the integrated condensed matter physics facility, enabling experiments to be performed with low-to-medium mass stable ion beams using charged-particle, gamma, and neutron spectroscopy. We report on high-field angle-dependent magneto-transport measurements on epitaxial thin films of Bi2Se3, a three-dimensional topological insulator. At low temperature, we observe quantum oscillations that demonstrate the simultaneous presence of bulk and surface carriers. The magneto- resistance of Bi2Se3 is found to be highly anisotropic. In the presence of a parallel electric and magnetic field, we observe a strong negative longitudinal magneto-resistance that has been consid- ered as a smoking-gun for the presence of chiral fermions in a certain class of semi-metals due to the so-called axial anomaly. Its observation in a three-dimensional topological insulator implies that the axial anomaly may be in fact a far more generic phenomenon than originally thought., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

An R-matrix model for three-body final states is presented and applied to a recent measurement of the neutron energy spectrum from the T+T->2n+alpha reaction. The calculation includes the n-alpha and n-n interactions in the final state, angular momentum conservation, antisymmetrization, and the interference between different channels. A good fit to the measured spectrum is obtained, where clear evidence for the 5He ground state is observed. The model is also used to predict the alpha-particle spectrum from T+T as well as particle spectra from 3He+3He. The R-matrix approach presented here is very general, and can be adapted to a wide variety of problems with three-body final states., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures

The fission Time Projection Chamber (fissionTPC) is a compact (15 cm diameter) two-chamber MICROMEGAS TPC designed to make precision cross section measurements of neutron-induced fission. The actinide targets are placed on the central cathode and irradiated with a neutron beam that passes axially through the TPC inducing fission in the target. The 4$\pi$ acceptance for fission fragments and complete charged particle track reconstruction are powerful features of the fissionTPC which will be used to measure fission cross sections and examine the associated systematic errors. This paper provides a detailed description of the design requirements, the design solutions, and the initial performance of the fissionTPC.

Spectra of outgoing neutrons and protons from the 6Li+55Mn reaction and protons from the a+57Fe reaction have been measured with beams of 15 MeV 6Li ions and 30 MeV alpha-particles. These reactions proceed through the same 61Ni nucleus at the same excitation energy, thus allowing the difference in reaction mechanism to be studied. It is shown that spectra from the first reaction measured at backward angles are due to emission from a traditional compound nucleus reaction, in which the intermediate nucleus has reached statistical equilibrium; the spectra from the second reaction contain a significant fraction of pre-equilibrium emission at all angles. Level density pa- rameters of the residual nucleus 60Co have been obtained from the first reaction. Both emission spectra and angular distributions have been measured for the second reaction. It was found that the pre-equilibrium component exhibits a forward-peaked angular distribution, as expected, but with a steeper slope than predicted and with an unusual slight rise at angles above 120\deg. The backward- angle rise is explained qualitatively by the dominance of the multi-step compound mechanism at backward angles.

The two-step cascade method previously used in neutron capture experiments is now applied to a proton capture reaction. The spectrum of two-step cascades populating the first 2+ level of 60Ni has been measured with 59Co(p,2gamma)60Ni reaction. The simulation technique used for the spectrum analysis allows one to reveal the range of possible shapes of both E1 and M1 gamma-strength functions. The low-energy enhancement previously observed in 3He induced reactions is seen to appear in M1 strength functions of 60Ni., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

The energy spectra of neutrons, protons, and alpha-particles have been measured from the d+59Co and 3He+58Fe reactions leading to the same compound nucleus, 61$Ni. The experimental cross sections have been compared to Hauser-Feshbach model calculations using different input level density models. None of them have been found to agree with experiment. It manifests the serious problem with available level density parameterizations especially those based on neutron resonance spacings and density of discrete levels. New level densities and corresponding Fermi-gas parameters have been obtained for reaction product nuclei such as 60Ni,60Co, and 57Fe.

We present new accurate measurements of the differential cross section $\sigma(\theta)$ and the proton analyzing power $A_{y}$ for proton-$^{3}$He elastic scattering at various energies. A supersonic gas jet target has been employed to obtain these low energy cross section measurements. The $\sigma(\theta)$ distributions have been measured at $E_{p}$ = 0.99, 1.59, 2.24, 3.11, and 4.02 MeV. Full angular distributions of $A_{y}$ have been measured at $E_{p}$ = 1.60, 2.25, 3.13, and 4.05 MeV. This set of high-precision data is compared to four-body variational calculations employing realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. For the unpolarized cross section the agreement between the theoretical calculation and data is good when a $3N$ potential is used. The comparison between the calculated and measured proton analyzing powers reveals discrepancies of approximately 50% at the maximum of each distribution. This is analogous to the existing ``$A_{y}$ Puzzle'' known for the past 20 years in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Physical Review C, corrected reference 49

The $^{55}$Mn$(d,n)^{56}$Fe differential cross section is measured at $E_d=7$ MeV\@. The $^{56}$Fe level density obtained from neutron evaporation spectra is compared to the level density extracted from the $^{57}$Fe$(^3$He,$\alpha\gamma)^{56}$Fe reaction by the Oslo-type technique. Good agreement is found between the level densities determined by the two methods. With the level density function obtained from the neutron evaporation spectra, the $^{56}$Fe $\gamma$-strength function is also determined from the first-generation $\gamma$ matrix of the Oslo experiment. The good agreement between the past and present results for the $\gamma$-strength function supports the validity of both methods and is consistent with the low-energy enhancement of the $\gamma$ strength below $\sim 4$ MeV first discovered by the Oslo method in iron and molybdenum isotopes., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) measurements have determined the baryon density of the Universe $\Omega_b$ with a precision of about 4%. With $\Omega_b$ tightly constrained, comparisons of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) abundance predictions to primordial abundance observations can be made and used to test BBN models and/or to further constrain abundances of isotopes with weak observational limits. To push the limits and improve constraints on BBN models, uncertainties in key nuclear reaction rates must be minimized. To this end, we made new precise measurements of the d(d,p)t and d(d,n)^3He total cross sections at lab energies from 110 keV to 650 keV. A complete fit was performed in energy and angle to both angular distribution and normalization data for both reactions simultaneously. By including parameters for experimental variables in the fit, error correlations between detectors, reactions, and reaction energies were accurately tabulated by computational methods. With uncertainties around 2% +/- 1% scale error, these new measurements significantly improve on the existing data set. At relevant temperatures, using the data of the present work, both reaction rates are found to be about 7% higher than those in the widely used Nuclear Astrophysics Compilation of Reaction Rates (NACRE). These data will thus lead not only to reduced uncertainties, but also to modifications in the BBN abundance predictions., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, minor editorial changes

Knowledge of the gamma-ray branching ratios of the 7.12-MeV state of 16O is important for the extrapolation of the 12C(a,g)16O cross section to astrophysical energies. Ground state transitions provide most of the 12C(a,g)16O total cross section while cascade transitions have contributions of the order of 10-20%. Determining the 7.12-MeV branching ratio will result in a better extrapolation of the cascade and E2 ground state cross section to low energies. The degree to which the (p,gamma) and (p,alpha) reactions destroy 18F at temperatures 1-4x10^8 K is important for understanding the synthesis of nuclei in nova explosions and for using the long-lived radionuclide 18F, a target of gamma-ray astronomy, as a diagnostic of nova mechanisms. The reactions are dominated by low-lying proton resonances near the 18F+p threshold (E_x=6.411 MeV in 19Ne). To gain further information about these resonances, we have used a radioactive 18F beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility to selectively populate corresponding mirror states in 19F via the inverse d(18F,p)19F neutron transfer reaction. Neutron spectroscopic factors were measured for states in 19F in the excitation energy range 0-9 MeV. Widths for corresponding proton resonances in 19Ne were calculated using a Woods-Saxon potential. The results imply significantly lower 18F(p,gamma)19Ne and 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction rates than reported previously, thereby increasing the prospect of observing the 511-keV annihilation radiation associated with the decay of 18F in the ashes ejected from novae., Comment: Error involving sum rule was corrected. The rapid nuetron-capture process (r process) produces roughly half of the elements heavier than iron. The path and abundances produced are uncertain, however, because of the lack of nuclear strucure information on important neutron-rich nuclei. We are studying nuclei on or near the r-process path via single-nucleon transfer reactions on neutron-rich radioactive beams at ORNL's Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF). Owing to the difficulties in studying these reactions in inverse kinematics, a variety of experimental approaches are being developed. Angular distributions of sigma(theta), A_y, iT_11, T_20, T_21, and T_22 have been measured for d-p scattering at E_c.m.=667 keV. This set of high-precision data is compared to variational calculations with the nucleon-nucleon potential alone and also to calculations including a three-nucleon (3N) potential. Agreement with cross-section and tensor analyzing power data is excellent when a 3N potential is used. However, a comparison between the vector analyzing powers reveals differences of approximately 40% in the maxima of the angular distributions which is larger than reported at higher energies for both p-d and n-d scattering. Single-energy phase-shift analyses were performed on this data set and a similar data set at E_c.m.=431.3 keV. The role of the different phase-shift parameters in fitting these data is discussed., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

A new measurement of the p-d differential cross section at Ep= 1 MeV has been performed. These new data and older data sets at energies below the deuteron breakup are compared to calculations using the two-nucleon Argonne v18 and the three-nucleon Urbana IX potentials. A quantitative estimate of the capability of these interactions to describe the data is given in terms of a chi^2 analysis. The chi^2 per datum drastically improves when the three-nucleon interaction is included in the Hamiltonian., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. C

We present measurements of differential cross sections and the analyzing powers A_y, iT11, T20, T21, and T22 at E_c.m.=431.3 keV. In addition, an excitation function of iT11(theta_c.m.=87.8 degrees) for 431.3 <= E_c.m. <= 2000 keV is presented. These data are compared to calculations employing realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, both with and without three-nucleon forces. Excellent agreement with the tensor analyzing powers and cross section is found, while the Ay and iT11 data are found to be underpredicted by the calculations., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The total cross section for p-d breakup is studied in terms of the elastic S-matrix through the unitary condition. Calculations using the complex Kohn variational method along with the Pair Correlated Hyperspherical Harmonic basis are presented. The results have been restricted to energies below Ep=30 MeV where Coulomb effects are expected to be sizable and are compared to the existing data. Two different measurements have been found in the literature: 40 years ago, Gibbons and Macklin (1959); and 26 years ago, Carlosn et al. (1973). The calculations are found to be in reasonable agreement with these old data, though a discrepancy is observed near the deuteron breakup threshold. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the contributions to the observable from different partial waves has been presented. Unexpectedly, the main contribution for a wide range of energies has been detected in the J=3/2- state., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B

We report new measurements of the total cross section for the 3H(p,n)3He reaction from threshold (Ep=1.02 MeV) to Ep=4.5 MeV. The experiment utilized specially prepared Ti-3H targets, and neutrons were detected using a 4-pi detector. A weak resonant structure due to an excited state in 4He is observed which was not seen in previous cross section measurements. A new expression for the 3He(n,p)3H thermonuclear reaction rate for temperatures below 10 GK is presented which will allow for more accurate calculations of the yields of light elements produced by big-bang nucleosynthesis., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. We present measurements of the analyzing powers Ay and iT11 for proton-deuteron scattering at Ecm=432 keV. Calculations using a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential (Argonne V18) are found to underpredict both analyzing powers by 40. The inclusion of the Urbana three-nucleon interaction does not significantly modify the calculated analyzing powers. Due to its short range, it is difficult for this three-nucleon interaction to affect Ay and iT11 at this low energy. The three-nucleon system is studied at energies a few hundred keV above the N-d threshold. Measurements of the tensor analyzing powers $T_{20}$ and $T_{21}$ for p-d elastic scattering at $E_{c.m.}=432$ keV are presented together with the corresponding theoretical predictions. The calculations are extended to very low energies since they are useful for extracting the p-d scattering lengths from the experimental data. The interaction considered here is the Argonne V18 potential plus the Urbana three-nucleon potential. The calculation of the asymptotic D- to S-state ratio for $^3$H and $^3$He, for which recent experimental results are available, is also presented., Comment: Latex, 11 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Phy.Lett.B
