The aim of this work was the technological characterization of sample fraction from Cubati region, Pedra Lavrada – Paraiba State, Brazil, in order to evaluate its further applications as drug adsorber and as oil drilling fluid. The sample had been properly processed and characterized by X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, cation exchange capacity, thermo-differential and thermogravimetric analysis, determination of textural properties by BET and B.J.H. methods, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and surface charge measurements by means of Zeta potential. The results obtained showed that the studied sample is essentially composed by montmorillonite (smectite), kaolinite, quartz and dolomite, with high contents of silica (37.4%), alumina (17.2%), calcium oxide (5.7%) and iron oxide (7.5%). The CEC value obtained (41.0 meq 100 g -1 ), is due to the presence of kaolinite, which was confirmed by XRD, DTA-TG/DTG and FTIR results. BET and B.J.H. models showed that it is a mesoporous clay mineral, with a surface area of 84.81 m 2 g -1 . The surface charge measurement by Zeta Potential showed that this clay mineral is negatively charged in almost all of pH range studied. Thus, it has high adsorptive potential of drugs cationic species, while activation with sodium carbonate associated with organophilization process allow its application as oil drilling fluid.

Palygorskite is a clay mineral that has several industrial and environmental applications. Palygorskite main deposits in Brazil are located in the municipality of Guadalupe, Piauí. A comparative study was performed with five samples of palygorskite from different locations through ore dressing and chemical and mineralogical characterization, using the XRD, XRF and methylene blue titration techniques. According to the results, there are significant differences in the samples composition. Among them, the most significant difference was the cation exchange capacity (CEC) value, which ranged from 24.0 to 41.0 meq.100 g-1, followed by the content of some oxides and the crystalline phases present. Despite coming from the same region, the samples contained distinct impurities.

The objective of this work was to investigate the adsorptive potential of a previously benefited and characterized brazilian montmorillonite sample, regarding amoxicillin trihydrate removal, a zwitterionic species, present in aqueous solutions. 500 mg capsule of antibiotic was properly characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDS and surface charge measurement through Zeta potential. Amoxicillin aqueous solution and supernatants from adsorption essays were characterized by Molecular Absorption Spectrophotometry in Ultraviolet-Visible Region (UV/VIS), from 200 to 400 nm. Three investigative essays were performed, varying montmorillonite mass (0.050, 0.525 and 1.000 g) and contact time between substances (10, 95 and 180 min). Amoxicillin sample is crystalline, morphologically prismatic, essentially composed of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, hydrogen and oxygen. Its zwitterionic character was confirmed by Zeta potential, presenting positive (pH 2 to 4), relatively neutral (pH 4 to 6), and negative (above pH 6) surface charges. Test results indicated that the highest removals (21.4 and 41.8 %) were for the largest clay mineral masses (0.525 and 1.000 g, respectively), with pHs close to amoxicillin pka1 (2.68). Larger clay mineral masses have more adsorbent sites, which, associated with components opposite charges in desired pH range, promote a greater interaction. Thus, brazilian montmorillonite can promote amoxicillin removal from aqueous solutions.

Our previous work reported that palygorskite has potential for application as metal cations adsorbent due to its chemical and mineralogical properties. In this work, kinetic study and adsorption isotherms were performed in order to evaluate Pb (II) ions adsorption rate, maximum capacity and type of adsorption by using palygorskite as adsorbent. Adsorption tests were performed in batch, using pH of 5, 2 g of palygorskite, 40 mL of synthetic effluent solution and stirring for 1 hour. Kinetic experiments were performed using 34 mg L-1 of a lead synthetic effluent at same mass and pH conditions. Furthermore, after adsorption studies, the sample was characterized by X-ray fluorecence (XRF), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, in order to verify and understand the interaction of lead ions in palygorskite. The results demonstrated that palygorskite presented an equilibrium time of 10 min with 99.14% of removal, following pseudo-second order kinetic. The maximum adsorption capacity was 21.65 mg g-1 and Gibbs’ adsorption-free energy was -21.39 KJ mol-1, with Langmuir model being the most suitable for adjustment of the data. Thus, its presence was confirmed by characterization techniques, indicating that the metal is distributed homogeneously on palygorskite surface, proving its efficiency as lead ions adsorbent.

Palygorskite (Mg,Al)5Si8O20(OH)2(OH2)4.4H2O, is a lamellar mineral with a fibrous morphology. The micropores and canals in the structure give a high specific surface and sorption capacity of various kinds of species. Guadalupe’s palygorskite (Piaui/Brazil) run of mine (ROM) was prepared (PA) and characterized by XRD and XRF. PA is composed by palygorskite, kaolinite, quartz and goethite and has 15.8, 58.0, 4.2 and 7.6% of SiO2, Al2O3, MgO and Fe2O3, respectively. Wet magnetic separation tests were conducted with PA obtaining the magnetic and non-magnetic fractions (PAM and PANM, respectively). PANM was characterized by XRD and XRF and the results of the XRF indicated that the iron content in the PA decreased 8.0% in the non-magnetic product. A new wet sieving was conducted with PANM to obtain a purer fraction (−20 μm) (PANMP) which was characterized by XRD, XRF, CEC, Zeta potential, SEM, TG/DTG. The result showed that this mineral could be used as adsorbent of heavy metals.

The Bauxite from North Brazil is characterized by a geological profile with different layers. The differences among these layers are percentage of bauxite constituents (gibbsite, kaolinite and hematite). Nowadays, only one layer is used for alumina production by Bayer process, the commercial or crystallized bauxite. This work intended to characterize and to ore dress crystallized bauxite (CB), amorphous crystallized (MB) and nodular bauxite (MNB) from Para to make them usable in the Bayer process. The ore dressing was developed by mechanochemical activation with an alkaline reagent in different concentrations and conditioning time. After ore dressing, the samples were submitted to characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XFR) and rheological characterization. CB and MB ore dressing products were characterized by an increase of mass ratio Al2O3available/SiO2reactive and it was observed that the total silica of MNB, after ore dressing, decreased around 13%. These results were a strong indication that these bauxites could be used in the Bayer process.
