Abstract

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion.

Abstract

One of the objectives of the NASA LWS Institute on Nowcasting of Atmospheric Drag for LEO Spacecraft was to investigate whether and how to increase the accuracy of atmospheric drag models by improving the quality of the solar forcing inputs, namely Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance information. 11. Determination of the most pertinent EUV proxy for use in thermosphere modeling

Abstract

Two major issues in the specification of the thermospheric density are the definition of proper solar inputs and the empirical modeling of thermosphere response to solar and to geomagnetic forcings. This specification is crucial for the tracking of low Earth orbiting satellites. Here we address both issues by using 14 years of daily density measurements made by the Stella satellite at 813 km altitude and by carrying out a multiscale statistical analysis of various solar inputs. First, we find that the spectrally integrated solar emission between 26-34 nm offers the best overall performance in the density reconstruction. Second, we introduce linear parametric transfer function models to describe the dynamic response of the density to the solar and geomagnetic forcings. These transfer function models lead to a major error reduction and in addition open new perspectives in the physical interpretation of the thermospheric dynamics.

Abstract

We report an airborne gravity survey with an absolute gravimeter based on atom interferometry and two relative gravimeters: a classical LaCoste&Romberg (L&R) and a novel iMAR strap-down Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). We estimated measurement errors for the quantum gravimeter ranging from 0.6 to 1.3 mGal depending on the flight conditions and the filtering used. Similar measurement errors are obtained with iMAR strapdown gravimeter but the long term stability is five times worse. The traditional L&R platform gravimeter shows larger measurement errors (3 - 4 mGal). Airborne measurements have been compared to marine, land and altimetry derived gravity data. We obtain a good agreement for the quantum gravimeter with standard deviations and means on differences below or equal to 2 mGal. This study confirms the potential of quantum technology for absolute airborne gravimetry which is particularly interesting for mapping shallow water or mountainous areas and for linking ground and satellite measurements with homogeneous absolute referencing. Abstract

We present new neutral mass density and crosswind observations for the CHAMP, GRACE, and GRACE-FO missions, filling the last gaps in our database of accelerometer-derived thermosphere observations. For consistency, we processed the data over the entire lifetime of these missions, noting that the results for GRACE in 2011- 2017 and GRACE-FO are entirely new. All accelerometer data are newly calibrated. We modeled the temperature-induced bias variations for the GRACE accelerometer data to counter the detrimental effects of the accelerometer thermal control deactivation in April 2011. Further, we developed a new radiation pressure model, which uses ray tracing to account for shadowing and multiple reflections and calculates the satellitea's thermal emissions based on the illumination history. The advances in calibration and radiation pressure modeling are essential when the radiation pressure acceleration is significant compared to the aerodynamic one above 450 km altitude during low solar activity, where the GRACE and GRACE-FO satellites spent a considerable fraction of their mission lifetime. The mean of the new density observations changes only marginally, but their standard deviation shows a substantial reduction compared to thermosphere models, up to 15% for GRACE in 2009. The mean and standard deviation of the new GRACE-FO density observations are in good agreement with the GRACE observations. The GRACE and CHAMP crosswind observations agree well with the physics-based TIE-GCM winds, particularly the polar wind patterns. The mean observed crosswind is a few tens of m·s-1 larger than the model one, which we attribute primarily to the crosswind errors being positive by the definition of the retrieval algorithm. Abstract

Aims Patients with cardiac disease are considered high risk for poor outcomes following hospitalization with COVID-19. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate heterogeneity in associations between various heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Methods and results We used data from the CAPACITY-COVID registry and LEOSS study. Multivariable Poisson regression models were fitted to assess the association between different types of pre-existing heart disease and in-hospital mortality. A total of 16 511 patients with COVID-19 were included (21.1% aged 66–75 years; 40.2% female) and 31.5% had a history of heart disease. Patients with heart disease were older, predominantly male, and often had other comorbid conditions when compared with those without. Mortality was higher in patients with cardiac disease (29.7%; n = 1545 vs. 15.9%; n = 1797). However, following multivariable adjustment, this difference was not significant [adjusted risk ratio (aRR) 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–1.15; P = 0.12 (corrected for multiple testing)]. Associations with in-hospital mortality by heart disease subtypes differed considerably, with the strongest association for heart failure (aRR 1.19, 95% CI 1.10–1.30; P Conclusion Considerable heterogeneity exists in the strength of association between heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Of all patients with heart disease, those with heart failure are at greatest risk of death when hospitalized with COVID-19. Serious cardiac complications are rare during hospitalization.

Abstract

The currently on-going NGGM preparatory activities encompass two parallel Phase A system studies, which are complemented by a science support study with the goal to identify of optimum set-up for a MAGIC constellation regarding science return, technical feasibility, and costs. As an extension of the Phase A science study and preparation for the upcoming Phase B, several aspects are treated in detail, such as to advance processing methods and algorithms towards an integrated L0-L3 processing, to demonstrate the scientific readiness of end-to-end simulations, to quantify the relative contributions of the two involved pairs to the total mission performance, to analyze specific aspects such the optimum set-up regarding short-term products for operational service applications, and to demonstrate the science impact of MAGIC in numerous application fields. Additionally, the study involves technical aspects such as the refinement of L0-L1b inter-satellite distance algorithm, or the in-flight calibration of the accelerometers.In this contribution will we will summarize the main finding of the first phase of the project and report on recent results of the extension phase. The underlying numerical E2E simulations are performed based on realistic error assumptions for the instruments and the involved background models. Abstract

Aims Patients with cardiac disease are considered high risk for poor outcomes following hospitalization with COVID-19. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate heterogeneity in associations between various heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Methods and results We used data from the CAPACITY-COVID registry and LEOSS study. Multivariable Poisson regression models were fitted to assess the association between different types of pre-existing heart disease and in-hospital mortality. A total of 16 511 patients with COVID-19 were included (21.1% aged 66-75 years; 40.2% female) and 31.5% had a history of heart disease. Patients with heart disease were older, predominantly male, and often had other comorbid conditions when compared with those without. Mortality was higher in patients with cardiac disease (29.7%; n= 1545 vs. 15.9%; n= 1797). However, following multivariable adjustment, this difference was not significant [adjusted risk ratio (aRR) 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.15; P = 0.12 (corrected for multiple testing)]. Associations with in-hospital mortality by heart disease subtypes differed considerably, with the strongest association for heart failure (aRR 1.19, 95% CI 1.10-1.30; P <0.018) particularly for severe (New York Heart Association class III/IV) heart failure (aRR 1.41, 95% CI 1.20-1.64; P < 0.018). None of the other heart disease subtypes, including ischaemic heart disease, remained significant after multivariable adjustment. Serious cardiac complications were diagnosed in <1% of patients. Conclusion Considerable heterogeneity exists in the strength of association between heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Of all patients with heart disease, those with heart failure are at greatest risk of death when hospitalized with COVID-19. Serious cardiac complications are rare during hospitalization. Abstract

Detection of DNA cytosine modifications such as 5-methylcytosine (5mC) and 5-hydroxy-methylcytosine (5hmC) is essential for understanding the epigenetic changes that guide development, cellular lineage specification, and disease. The wide variety of approaches available to interrogate these modifications has created a need for harmonized materials, methods, and rigorous benchmarking to improve genome-wide methylome sequencing applications in clinical and basic research. We present a multi-platform assessment and a global resource for epigenetics research from the FDA's Epigenomics Quality Control (EpiQC) Group. The study design leverages seven human cell lines that are publicly available from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Genome in a Bottle (GIAB) consortium. These genomes were subject to a variety of genome-wide methylation interrogation approaches across six independent laboratories. Our primary focus was on cytosine modifications found in mammalian genomes (5mC, 5hmC). Each sample was processed in two or more technical replicates by three whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) protocols (TruSeq DNA methylation, Accel-NGS, SPLAT), oxidative bisulfite sequencing (oxBS), Enzymatic Methyl-seq (EM-seq), Illumina EPIC targeted-methylation sequencing, and ATAC-seq. Each library was sequenced to high coverage on an Illumina NovaSeq 6000. The data were subject to rigorous quality assessment and subsequently compared to Illumina EPIC methylation microarrays. We provide a wide range of sequence data for commonly used genomics reference materials, as well as best practices for epigenomics research. These findings can serve as a guide for researchers to enable epigenomic analysis of cellular identity in development, health, and disease.

Abstract

The Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft has been located in a near-circular, polar, and low-altitude mapping orbit about Mars for six years, since February 1999. The spacecraft is tracked routinely by the antennae of the Deep Space Network (DSN), using the X Band radio system of the spacecraft. These tracking data have been used for routine spacecraft navigation, and for radio science studies, such as the estimation of the static and time-varying gravity field of Mars. In this paper we describe the methodology for reduction of these data in order to estimate the Mars atmospheric density (normalized to an altitude 380 km) over half a solar cycle, where we discern the correlation of the density with the incident solar flux, and the 27-day solar rotation. The results show that the density at the MGS altitude varies from a mean of 0.7 x 10(exp -17) grams/cu cm near aphelion to a mean of 3.0 x 10(exp -17)grams/cu cm near perihelion.

Abstract

The recently completely recalibrated and reprocessed Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE) gravity gradient data were used by GFZ and CNES/GRGS to generate a new gravity field model viathe direct approach (DIR-R6). This work was done on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) within theconsortium of the GOCE High Level Processing Facility (GOCE-HPF).DIR-R6 is a satellite-only global gravity field model in terms of spherical harmonics to maximum degree andorder 300. It has been inferred by the combination of GOCE gravity gradient data with data from Satellite LaserRanging (SLR) tracking (LAGEOS 1/2, Stella, Starlette, Ajisai and LARES) and Gravity Recovery and ClimateExperiment (GRACE). Due to the instrumental behavior of the GOCE satellite gradiometer, the gravity gradientobservation equations must be preprocessed and filtered. Here, within the direct numerical method, the filteringhas been done using a low pass filter with a cut-off period of 8 seconds. The GOCE GPS-SST data are only usedto geolocate the gradients. The low-to-medium degree spherical harmonic coefficients of the gravity field aredetermined using GRACE GPS-SST and KBR data as well as SLR data from GFZ’s release 6 models. All dataare combined at normal equation level, which are solved using Cholesky decomposition. We applied the sphericalcap regularization to stabilize the low-order spherical harmonic coefficients for the polar gaps in the GOCE data.Furthermore, Kaula regularization is used at the high degrees. .When compared to the previous gravity field models based on GOCE data, for instance to the earlier releases ofESA’s GOCE models, DIR-R6 is more accurate, especially in its medium to high resolution. This is demonstratedamong others by GPS/leveling, orbit determination tests and an oceanographic evaluation.

Abstract

Background: Careful assessment of the reasons for discontinuation of active surveillance (AS) is required for men with prostate cancer (PCa). Objective(s): Using Movember's Global Action Plan Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance initiative (GAP3) database, we report on reasons for AS discontinuation. Design, setting, and participants: We compared data from 10 296 men on AS from 21 centres across 12 countries. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Cumulative incidence methods were used to estimate the cumulative incidence rates of AS discontinuation. Results and limitations: During 5-yr follow-up, 27.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 26.4-28.6%) men showed signs of disease progression, 12.8% (95% CI: 12.0-13.6%) converted to active treatment without evidence of progression, 1.7% (95% CI: 1.5-2.0%) continued to watchful waiting, and 1.7% (95% CI: 1.4-2.1%) died from other causes. Of the 7049 men who remained on AS, 2339 had follow-up for >5 yr, 4561 had follow-up for <5 yr, and 149 were lost to follow-up. Cumulative incidence of progression was 27.5% (95% CI: 26.4-28.6%) at 5 yr and 38.2% (95% CI: 36.7-39.9%) at 10 yr. A limitation is that not all centres were included due to limited information on the reason for discontinuation and limited follow-up. Conclusion(s): Our descriptive analyses of current AS practices worldwide showed that 43.6% of men drop out of AS during 5-yr follow-up, mainly due to signs of disease progression. Improvements in selection tools for AS are thus needed to correctly allocate men with PCa to AS, which will also reduce discontinuation due to conversion to active treatment without evidence of disease progression. Patient Summary: Our assessment of a worldwide database of men with prostate cancer (PCa) on active surveillance (AS) shows that 43.6% drop out of AS within 5 yr, mainly due to signs of disease progression. Background: Men with prostate cancer (PCa) on active surveillance (AS) are followed through regular prostate biopsies, a burdensome and often unnecessary intervention, not without risks. Identifying men with at a low risk of disease reclassification may help reduce the number of biopsies. Objective(s): To assess the external validity of two Canary Prostate Active Surveillance Study Risk Calculators (PASS-RCs), which estimate the probability of reclassification (Gleason grade >=7 with or without >34% of biopsy cores positive for PCa) on a surveillance biopsy, using a mix of months since last biopsy, age, body mass index, prostate-specific antigen, prostate volume, number of prior negative biopsies, and percentage (or ratio) of positive cores on last biopsy. Design, setting, and participants: We used data up to November 2017 from the Movember Foundation's Global Action Plan (GAP3) consortium, a global collaboration between AS studies. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: External validity of the PASS-RCs for estimating reclassification on biopsy was assessed by calibration, discrimination, and decision curve analyses. Results and limitations: Five validation cohorts (Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance, Johns Hopkins, Toronto, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and University of California San Francisco), comprising 5105 men on AS, were eligible for analysis. Abstract

Earth observation satellites yield a wealth of data for scientific, operational and commercial exploitation. However, the redistribution of mass in the system Earth is not yet part of the standard inventory of Earth Observation (EO) data products to date. It is derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission and its Follow-On mission (GRACE-FO). Among many other applications, mass redistribution provides fundamental insights into the global water cycle. Changes in continental water storage impact the regional water budget and can, in extreme cases, result in floods and droughts that often claim a high toll on infrastructure, economy and human lives. The initiative for a European Gravity Service for Improved Emergency Management (EGSIEM) established three different prototype services to promote the unique value of mass redistribution products for Earth Observation in general and for early-warning systems in particular. The first prototype service is a scientific combination service to derive improved mass redistribution products from the combined knowledge of the European GRACE analysis centres. Secondly, the timeliness and reliability of such products is a primary concern for any early-warning system and therefore EGSIEM established a prototype for a near real-time service that provides dedicated gravity field information with a maximum latency of five days . Third, EGSIEM established a prototype of a hydrological / early warning service that derives wetness indices as indicators of hydrological extremes and assessed their potential for timely scheduling of high-resolution optical/radar satellites for follow-up observations in case of evolving hydrological extreme events.
