BEC is a quantum phenomenon, where a macroscopic number of bosons occupy the lowest energy state and acquire coherence at low temperatures. It is realized not only in $^4$He and dilute atomic gases, but also in quantum magnets, where hardcore bosons, introduced by the Matsubara-Matsuda transformation of spins, condense. In 3D antiferromagnets, an XY-type long-range ordering (LRO) occurs near a magnetic-field-induced transition to a fully polarized state (FP) and has been successfully described as a BEC in the last few decades. An attractive extension of the BEC in 3D magnets is to make their 2D analogue. For a strictly 2D system, BEC cannot take place due to the presence of a finite density of states at zero energy, and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition may instead emerge. In a realistic quasi-2D magnet consisting of stacked 2D magnets, a small but finite interlayer coupling stabilizes marginal LRO and BEC, but such that 2D physics, including BKT fluctuations, is still expected to dominate. A few systems were reported to show such 2D-limit BEC, but at very high magnetic fields that are difficult to access. The honeycomb $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet YbCl$_3$ with an intra-layer coupling $J\sim$ 5 K exhibits a transition to a FP state at a low in-plane magnetic field of $H_{\rm s}$ = 5.93 T. Here, we demonstrate that the LRO right below $H_{\rm s}$ is a BEC in the 2D-limit stabilized by an extremely small interlayer coupling $J_{\perp}$ of 10$^{-5}J$. At the quantum critical point Hs, we capture 2D-limit quantum fluctuations as the formation of a highly mobile, interacting 2D Bose gas in the dilute limit. A much-reduced effective boson-boson repulsion Ueff as compared with that of a prototypical 3D system indicates the presence of a logarithmic renormalization of interaction unique to 2D., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures

Topotactic transformations between related crystal structures are a powerful emerging route for the synthesis of novel quantum materials. Whereas most such "soft chemistry" experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline powders or thin films, the topotactic modification of single crystals -- the gold standard for physical property measurements on quantum materials -- has proven remarkably difficult. Here, we report the topotactic reduction of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$NiO$_3$ single-crystals to La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$NiO$_{2+\delta}$ using CaH$_2$ as the reducing agent. The transformation from the three-dimensional perovskite to the quasi-two-dimensional infinite-layer phase was thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, magnetometry, and electrical transport measurements. Our work demonstrates that the infinite-layer structure can be realized as a bulk phase in crystals with micrometer-sized single-domains. The electronic properties of these specimens resemble those of epitaxial thin films rather than powders with similar compositions.

The layered compound $\mathrm{Ta_2NiSe_5}$ is a quasi-one-dimensional and narrow-gap semiconductor, which is proposed to undergo a transition to an excitonic insulator at $T_\mathrm{c}=326$ K. We found a clear anomaly at $T_\mathrm{c}$ in the in-plane thermal conductivities both parallel ($\parallel$ $a$) and perpendicular ($\parallel$ $c$) to the one-dimensional chains, $\kappa_\mathrm{a}$ and $\kappa_\mathrm{c}$. While $\kappa_\mathrm{a}$ shows a rapid decrease below $T_\mathrm{c}$, $\kappa_\mathrm{c}$ shows a pronounced V-shaped suppression centered at $T_\mathrm{c}$. We argue that the decrease of $\kappa_\mathrm{a}$ represents the suppression of the quasiparticle contribution below $T_\mathrm{c}$ due to excitonic condensation. On the other hand, the V-shaped suppression of $\kappa_\mathrm{c}$ comes from the enhanced phonon scattering by soft phonons associated with the monoclinic transition with momentum $\mathbf{q}\parallel c$. The continued suppression of $\kappa_\mathrm{c}$ up to an extremely high temperature above $T_\mathrm{c}$ suggests the persistence of phonon softening likely coupled to electronic, presumably excitonic, fluctuations.

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report a field-temperature phase diagram and an entropy map for the heavy fermion compound CeAuSb$_2$. CeAuSb$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N=6.6$~K, and has two metamagnetic transitions, at 2.8 and 5.6~T. The locations of the critical endpoints of the metamagnetic transitions, which may play a strong role in the putative quantum criticality of CeAuSb$_2$ and related compounds, are identified. The entropy map reveals an apparent entropy balance with Fermi liquid behavior, implying that above the N\'{e}el transition the Ce moments are incorporated into the Fermi liquid.
