1. Combining topic modelling and citation network analysis to study case law from the European Court on Human Rights on the right to respect for private and family life

Abstract

As legal case law databases such as HUDOC continue to grow rapidly, it has become essential for legal researchers to find efficient methods to handle such large-scale data sets. Such case law databases usually consist of the textual content of cases together with the citations between them. This paper focuses on case law from the European Court of Human Rights on Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights, the right to respect private and family life, home and correspondence. In this study, we demonstrate and compare the potential of topic modelling and citation network to find and organize case law on Article 8 based on their general themes and citation patterns, respectively. Additionally, we explore whether combining these two techniques leads to better results compared to the application of only one of the methods. We evaluate the effectiveness of the combined method on a unique manually collected and annotated dataset of Aricle 8 case law on evictions. The results of our experiments show that our combined (text and citation-based) approach provides the best results in finding and grouping case law, providing scholars with an effective way to extract and analyse relevant cases on a specific issue.

Abstract

Synthegra B.V. heeft in opdracht een archeologisch bureauonderzoek in combinatie met een verkennend booronderzoek uitgevoerd op een terrein aan de Hesselweg 2/2a te Megchelen. Het onderzoek wordt begrensd door weg aan de noordkant en huizen aan weerskanten. De aanleiding voor het onderzoek is de realisatie van woningen. De oppervlakte van de toekomstige bodemverstoring bedraagt 1.600 m2 met een diepte van ca. 1 meter beneden maaiveld. Aangezien het plangebied circa 1.600 m2 groot is, zijn verspreid over het plangebied in totaal 6 boringen gezet. Voor zover de terreinomstandigheden (bebouwing, verhardingen, begroeiing etc.) het toelieten. Er is geboord met een Edelmanboor met een diameter van 7 cm en een gutsboor met een diameter van 3 cm. De boringen zijn uitgevoerd tot minimaal 25 cm in de C-horizont, of in specifieke afzettingen, of tot de verstoringsdiepte. De boringen zijn lithologisch beschreven conform de NEN 5104 en bodemkundig geïnterpreteerd. Het natuurlijke bodemtype is verstoord tot gemiddeld 50 centimeter beneden het maaiveld. Hieronder is nog een intact bodemprofiel aanwezig. Het betreft een ooivaaggrond die gekenmerkt wordt door een B-horizont die wel tot 1 meter dik kan worden.

Abstract

De rechter moet volgens de wet rechtspreken. Aan de wet liggen immersdemocratisch tot stand gekomen keuzes ten grondslag. Is de wetonduidelijk, dan kan de bedoeling van de wetgever worden achterhaald in detotstandkomingsgeschiedenis. Met behulp van een selectief gebruik van deparlementaire geschiedenis legitimeert de rechter evenwel ook regelmatig doorhemzelf gewenste maatschappelijke uitkomsten. Die praktijk is niet zonderbedenkingen, zeker niet wanneer daardoor individuele vrijheidsrechten in deverdrukking komen.

Abstract

Hoofddoel van het pilotprogramma is waterbeheerders, terreinbeherende instanties en provincies te ondersteunen in hun activiteiten een koppeling tot stand te brengen tussen waterberging en - buffering en natuurbehoud en -ontwikkeling. Eén van de geselecteerde pilots uit het pilotprogramma ligt langs de Beerze. De Beerze is representatief voor de huidige situatie in veel Brabantse beekdalen: er is sprake van een waterkwantiteitsprobleem, en (tijdelijke) berging van het beekwater in natuurgebieden stuit op problemen, vooral vanwege de (eutrofe) waterkwaliteit. Tegelijkertijd speelt verdroging van natuurgebieden een rol. De pilot Beerze ligt in het traject Logtse Baan - Logtse Velden - Smalbroeken. De onderzoeksperiode van deze pilot besloeg 2004 tot medio 2007

Abstract

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common form of motor neuron disease (MND). It is currently incurable and treatment is largely limited to supportive care. Family history is associated with an increased risk of ALS, and many Mendelian causes have been discovered. However, most forms of the disease are not obviously familial. Recent advances in human genetics have enabled genome-wide analyses of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that make it possible to study complex genetic contributions to human disease. Genome-wide SNP analyses require a large sample size and thus depend upon collaborative efforts to collect and manage the biological samples and corresponding data. Public availability of biological samples (such as DNA), phenotypic and genotypic data further enhances research endeavors. Here we discuss a large collaboration among academic investigators, government, and non-government organizations which has created a public repository of human DNA, immortalized cell lines, and clinical data to further gene discovery in ALS. This resource currently maintains samples and associated phenotypic data from 2332 MND subjects and 4692 controls. This resource should facilitate genetic discoveries which we anticipate will ultimately provide a better understanding of the biological mechanisms of neurodegeneration in ALS.

Abstract

Three months of data taken by the Engineering Array Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory have been analyzed with the aim of setting a procedure for the study of showers at E_0 ~ 10^18 eV. We present the results, concerning: (i) the selection procedure and the check of its efficiency; (ii) the event rate and its stability; (iii) the characteristics of such events (i.e., angular direction, energy estimator S(1000), rise time vs core distance, correlation with pressure) showing their consistency with the expectations. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Southern Observatory in Argentina has begun taking data as it is being developed up to a final enclosed area of 3000 square kilometres. A key aspect of the project is to provide information on the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays through understanding the arrival directions of those particles. To avoid claims of a spurious anisotropy detection because trials have not been properly accounted, the Auger Collaboration has agreed 'a priori' to the analysis prescription presented here. It specifies the following: 1. The accumulation time for the (future) data set to be analyzed. 2. The anisotropy 'targets', each assigned a chance probability level. 3. The analysis procedure for each trial. A positive result will be claimed for any target search only if its chance probability is less than its assigned level. The levels are chosen so that the total chance probability for one or more positive results is 0.001. Exploratory searches beyond this prescription will be encouraged, but the Auger Collaboration will not assign any confidence level to anisotropies that may be discovered that way. Any such discovery would identify a good target for a prescription to be used with a subsequent Auger data set., 4 pages

Abstract

The absolute calibration of an air fluorescence detector (FD) is an important element in correctly determining the energy of detected cosmic rays. The absolute calibration relates the flux of photons of a given wavelength at the detector aperture to the electronic signal recorded by the FD data acquisition system. For the Auger FDs, the primary absolute calibration method uses a diffusive surface which is placed in front of a telescope aperture to uniformly illuminate the telescope field of view with a known light signal. This single-wavelength measurement (375 nm) will be made at intervals of several months until the stability of the telescopes is determined. The relative wavelength dependence of the calibration is determined through independent measurements. The error in absolute calibration at a single wavelength is estimated to be less than 10%. Two other absolute calibration methods are used to provide an independent verification of the primary measurement. The stability of the calibration with time is monitored nightly by a relative calibration system. In this paper we will provide descriptions of the absolute and relative calibration methods used by the Auger air fluorescence observatory. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a``hybrid'' UHECR detector. The surface detector (SD) and air fluorescence detector (FD) of the observatory are designed for observation of cosmic ray showers in coincidence, with a 10% duty cycle. The resulting data are expected to be superior in quality to those of either the SD or FD operating individually. Hybrid operation, triggering, data acquisition, and event reconstruction were successfully demonstrated during the prototype phase of the project. This paper focuses on 75 hybrid events recorded during a four month period of running with the prototype detectors in late 2001 and early 2002. The geometric technique for reconstruction of the hybrid events is described and its advantages over the traditional FD-only method are demonstrated. Abstract

This is a first behavioural description of a large non-nest associated drone congregation of the stingless bee Melipona favosa. The about 400 drones had originated from different nests. The males interacted aggressively. Several gynes arrived at the drone congregation area (DCA). Olfactory stimuli triggered specific behaviours of the males as well as of the gynes but matings were not observed at the DCA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
