Abstract

Low-lying states of $^{94}$Zr were investigated via low-energy multi-step Coulomb excitation. From the measured $\gamma$-ray yields, 13 reduced transition probabilities between low-spin states were determined, together with the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of the $2_{1,2}^+$ states. Based on this information, for the first time in the Zr isotopic chain, the shapes of the $0_{1,2}^+$ states including their deformation softness were inferred in a model-independent way using the quadrupole sum rules approach. The ground state of $^{94}$Zr possesses a rather diffuse shape associated with a spherical configuration, while the $0_2^+$ state is oblate and more strongly deformed. The observed features of shape coexistence in $^{94}$Zr are in agreement with Monte-Carlo shell-model predictions, and the present results are vital to refine the IBM-CM description of the Zr isotopes around $A\approx 100$ in terms of an intertwined quantum phase transition., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The excited states of unstable $^{20}$O were investigated via $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{19}$O$(d,p)^{20}$O reaction at 8 $A$MeV. By exploiting the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, the lifetime of the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the $\gamma$-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of $\gamma$-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab-initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab-initio approaches using chiral EFT forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Abstract

Presently, gamma-ray tracking in germanium segmented detectors is realised by applying two advanced, complex algorithms. While they have already triggered an intensive R&D, they are still subject to further improvements. Making such algorithms effective, online in real time conditions and/or offline for deeper analysis, in data pipelines do require many additional software developments. This review paper gives an overview of the various bricks of software produced so far by the AGATA collaboration. It provides hints of what is foreseen for the next phases of the project up to its full configuration namely with 180 capsules in the array.

Abstract

Direct nuclear reactions with radioactive ion beams represent an extremely powerful tool to extend the study of fundamental nuclear properties far from stability. These measurements require pure and dense targets to cope with the low beam intensities. The $^3$He cryogenic target HeCTOr has been designed to perform direct nuclear reactions in inverse kinematics. The high density of $^3$He scattering centers, of the order of 10$^{20}$ atoms/cm$^2$, makes it particularly suited for experiments where low-intensity radioactive beams are involved. The target was employed in a first in-beam experiment, where it was coupled to state-of-the-art gamma-ray and particle detectors. It showed excellent stability in gas temperature and density over time. Relevant experimental quantities, such as total target thickness, energy resolution and gamma-ray absorption, were determined through dedicated Geant4 simulations and found to be in good agreement with experimental data., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The MUGAST-AGATA-VAMOS set-up at GANIL combines the MUGAST highly-segmented silicon array with the state-of-the-art AGATA array and the large acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The mechanical and electronics integration copes with the constraints of maximum efficiency for each device, in particular {\gamma}-ray transparency for the silicon array. This complete set-up offers a unique opportunity to perform exclusive measurements of direct reactions with the radioactive beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. The performance of the set-up is described through its commissioning and two examples of transfer reactions measured during the campaign. High accuracy spectroscopy of the nuclei of interest, including cross-sections and angular distributions, is achieved through the triple-coincidence measurement. In addition, the correction from Doppler effect of the {\gamma}-ray energies is improved by the detection of the light particles and the use of two-body kinematics and a full rejection of the background contributions is obtained through the identification of heavy residues. Moreover, the system can handle high intensity beams (up to 108 pps). Abstract

The structure of $^{74}$Se at low energy was investigated via spectroscopy of internal conversion electrons at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL). A set of internal K-conversion coefficients and monopole transition strengths was measured. A large ρ2(E0;22+→21+)⋅103=210(130) value was deduced. This result, in addition to a low upper limit for the 03+→02+ electron transition, casts in doubt a simple interpretation of the $^{74}$Se low-lying structure, in particular the recently proposed spherical, vibrational character. New microscopic beyond-mean-field calculations generally agree with the experimental results and are capable of producing a large ρ2(E0;22+→21+) value, even if still a factor ≈7 smaller than the experiment. Triaxiality and a complex shape-coexistence and mixing scenario seem responsible for this unexpected experimental result.

Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), Italy. In this installation, AGATA will consist, at the beginning, of 13 AGATA triple clusters (ATCs) with an angular coverage of 1n,and progressively the number of ATCs will increase up to a 2 pi angular coverage. This setup will exploit both stable and radioactive ion beams delivered by the Tandem-PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and the SPES facility. The new implementation of AGATA at LNL will be used in two different configurations, firstly one coupled to the PRISMA large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer and lately a second one at Zero Degrees, along the beam line. These two configurations will allow us to cover a broad physics program, using different reaction mechanisms, such as Coulomb excitation, fusion-evaporation, transfer and fission at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. These setups have been designed to be coupled with a large variety of complementary detectors such as charged particle detectors, neutron detectors, heavy-ion detectors, high-energy gamma-ray arrays, cryogenic and gasjet targets and the plunger device for lifetime measurements. We present in this paper the conceptual design, characteristics and performance figures of this implementation of AGATA at LNL.

Abstract

International audience; Presently, gamma-ray tracking in germanium segmented detectors is realised by applying two advanced, complex algorithms. While they have already triggered an intensive R&D, they are still subject to further improvements. Making such algorithms effective, online in real time conditions and/or offline for deeper analysis, in data pipelines do require many additional software developments. This review paper gives an overview of the various bricks of software produced so far by the AGATA collaboration. It provides hints of what is foreseen for the next phases of the project up to its full configuration namely with 180 capsules in the array.

Abstract

The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Abstract

The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

6 pags., 5 figs., Low-lying states of Cd98 have been populated by the two-nucleon removal reaction (In100,Cd98+γ) and studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. Two new γ transitions were identified and assigned as decays from a previously unknown state. This state is suggested to be based on a π1g9/2-12p1/2-1 configuration with Jπ=5-. The present observation extends the systematics of the excitation energies of the first 5- state in N=50 isotones toward Sn100. The determined energy of the 5- state in Cd98 continues a smooth trend along the N=50 isotones. The systematics are compared with shell-model calculations in different model spaces. Good agreement is achieved when considering a model space consisting of the π(1f5/2, 2p3/2, 2p1/2, 1g9/2) orbitals. The calculations with a smaller model space omitting the orbitals below the Z=38 subshell could not reproduce the experimental energy difference between the ground and first 5- states in N=50 isotones, because proton excitations across Z=38 subshell yield a large amount of correlation energy that lowers the ground states., The authors thank the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff for providing a stable and high-intensity 124Xe beam and the BigRIPS team for the smooth operation of the secondary beam. Abstract

A recent experiment on 12C + 24Mg sub-barrier fusion was performed. Standard coupled-channels calculations clearly over-estimated the low energy cross sections and there was indication of a maximum of the astrophysical S factor vs energy. In the present work further measurements have been performed on the same system, and we extended the excitation function to lower energies down to σ ≃ 4 ÎĽ b, confirming the existence of the hindrance phenomenon. Additional energy points near the barrier were added as well. In agreement with the result of previous experiment, the hindrance energy threshold is observed to correspond to a remarkably large cross section. The present new data allow to better define the S -factor maximum, that is well fitted using two parametrizations of either the hindrance or the adiabatic model. We also performed coupled-channels calculations using a Woodsâ€"Saxon potential. Far below the barrier we observe that the coupling strengths decrease and tend to vanish, indeed one-dimensional tunnelling calculations well reproduce the excitation function. Further precise cross section measurements at slightly lower energies are needed to discriminate between the adiabatic and hindrance models. This would give a reliable guidance for the extrapolation to the systems of astrophysical interest, like 12C + 12C and 16O + 16O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The phenomenon of fusion hindrance may have important consequences on the nuclear processes occurring in astrophysical scenarios, if it is a general behavior of heavy-ion fusion at extreme subbarrier energies, including reactions involving lighter systems, e.g., reactions in the carbon and oxygen burning stages of heavy stars. The hindrance is generally identified by the observation of a maximum of the S factor vs energy. Whether there is an S-factor maximum at very low energies for systems with a positive fusion Q value is an experimentally challenging question. Purpose: Our aim has been to search for evidence of fusion hindrance in 12C+24Mg which is a medium-light system with positive Q value for fusion, besides the heavier cases where hindrance is recognized to be a general phenomenon. 12C+24Mg is very close to the 16O+16O and 12C+12C systems that are important for the late evolution of heavy stars. Methods: The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics using the 24Mg beam from the XTU Tandem accelerator of LNL in the energy range 26–52 MeV with an intensity of 4–8 pnA. The targets were 12C evaporations 50μg/cm2 thick, isotopically enriched to 99.9%. The fusion-evaporation residues were detected at small angles by a E−ΔE-ToF detector telescope following an electrostatic beam deflector. Results: Previous measurements of fusion cross section for 12C+24Mg were limited to above-barrier energies. In the present experiment the excitation function has been extended down to ≃15μb and it appears that the S factor develops a clear maximum vs energy, indicating the presence of hindrance. This is the first convincing evidence of an S factor maximum in a medium-light system with a positive fusion Q value. These results have been fitted following a recently suggested method and a detailed analysis within the coupled-channels model that has been performed using a Woods-Saxon potential and including the ground state rotational band of 24Mg. The coupled-channels calculations give a good account of the data near and above the barrier but overpredict the cross sections at very low energies. Conclusions: The hindrance phenomenon is clearly observed in 12C+24Mg, and its energy threshold is in reasonable agreement with the systematics observed for several medium-light systems. Abstract

International audience; Background: The phenomenon of fusion hindrance may have important consequences on the nuclear processes occurring in astrophysical scenarios, if it is a general behavior of heavy-ion fusion at extreme subbarrier energies, including reactions involving lighter systems, e.g., reactions in the carbon and oxygen burning stages of heavy stars. The hindrance is generally identified by the observation of a maximum of the S factor vs energy. Whether there is an S-factor maximum at very low energies for systems with a positive fusion Q value is an experimentally challenging question. Purpose: Our aim has been to search for evidence of fusion hindrance in C12+Mg24 which is a medium-light system with positive Q value for fusion, besides the heavier cases where hindrance is recognized to be a general phenomenon. C12+Mg24 is very close to the O16+O16 and C12+C12 systems that are important for the late evolution of heavy stars. Methods: The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics using the Mg24 beam from the XTU Tandem accelerator of LNL in the energy range 26–52 MeV with an intensity of 4–8 pnA. The targets were C12 evaporations 50μg/cm2 thick, isotopically enriched to 99.9%. The fusion-evaporation residues were detected at small angles by a E-ΔE-ToF detector telescope following an electrostatic beam deflector. Results: Previous measurements of fusion cross section for C12+Mg24 were limited to above-barrier energies. In the present experiment the excitation function has been extended down to ≃15μb and it appears that the S factor develops a clear maximum vs energy, indicating the presence of hindrance. This is the first convincing evidence of an S factor maximum in a medium-light system with a positive fusion Q value. These results have been fitted following a recently suggested method and a detailed analysis within the coupled-channels model that has been performed using a Woods-Saxon potential and including the ground state rotational band of Mg24. The coupled-channels calculations give a good account of the data near and above the barrier but overpredict the cross sections at very low energies. Conclusions: The hindrance phenomenon is clearly observed in C12+Mg24, and its energy threshold is in reasonable agreement with the systematics observed for several medium-light systems. The fusion cross sections at the hindrance threshold show that the highest value (σs=1.6mb) is indeed found for this system. Abstract

International audience; The double-gamma decay is a second order electromagnetic process where two photons are emitted simultaneously. It is characterized by low branching ratios, making its measurement interesting both theoretically and also experimentally. Although this process has been already observed in the past, a recent publication claimed its observation in competition with the single gamma decay. A measurement of this process with the AGATA spectrometer (Advanced GAmma Tracking Array) will deliver more detailed results. A test of feasibility of this challenging measurement has been performed through GEANT4 simulations of the decay of the 137Ba isotope. Particular emphasis is placed on the tracking algorithm which allows to reconstruct a scattering gamma-ray event based on the position and energy of every interaction point within the AGATA germanium detector.

Abstract

The γ decay of the elusive narrow, near-threshold proton resonance in 11B was investigated at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (INFN) in a particle- γ coincidence experiment, using the 6Li(6Li,p γ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GALILEO-GALTRACE setup. No clear signature was found for a possible E1 decay to the 1/2 1 − , first-excited state of 11B, predicted by the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC) with a branching of 0.98 − 69 + 167 × 10 − 3 with respect to the dominant particle-decaying modes. The statistical analysis of the γ -ray spectrum provided an average upper limit of 2.37 × 10 − 3 for this γ -ray branching, with a global significance of 5 σ. On the other hand, by imposing a global confidence level of 3 σ , a significant excess of counts was observed for E = γ 9300 (20) keV, corresponding to a resonance energy of 11429(20) keV (namely 200(20) keV above the proton separation energy of 11B) and a γ -ray branching of 1.12 (35) × 10 − 3. This result is compatible with the SMEC calculations, potentially supporting the existence of a near-threshold proton resonance in 11B. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
