24. Phenology, Morphology and Physiology Responses of Deficit Irrigated ‘Koroneiki’ Olive Trees as Affected by Environmental Conditions and Alternate Bearing

Abstract

Climate change is affecting water resources in the Mediterranean region. In olive orchards, irrigation water use efficiency could be increased by accounting for trees’ alternate bearing behaviour and growth-stage sensitivity to drought. The main objective of this study is to examine olive tree phenology, morphology and physiology in “on” and “off” productive years for the improvement of irrigation scheduling. A regulated (RDI) and a sustained (SDI) deficit irrigation treatment were applied in a ‘Koroneiki’ olive orchard in Cyprus. Flowering occurred on 11 May 2019 and on 27 April 2021, which was caused by the lower temperatures in 2019. The Kc for the irrigation season, computed from daily water balance observations, was 0.37 in 2019 (38% canopy cover) and 0.41 in 2021 (62% canopy cover). Irrigation treatments did not significantly affect plant morphology and stem water potentials. In “on” years, shoot elongation ceased early in the season and stem water potential towards the end of September (−4.0 MPa) was lower than in the “off” year. Stem water potential recovery in the September of the “off” year indicated that irrigation could be less than 35% ETc in early fall. Water savings in RDI were 24–32% in “on” and 48% in “off” years relative to SDI, with no statistically significant effects on olive yields

Abstract

Climate and other human-induced changes will increase water scarcity in world areas such as in the Mediterranean. Adaptation principles need to be urgently incorporated into water management and stakeholder engagement needs to be strengthened at all steps of the management cycle. This study aimed to analyse and compare stakeholder-preferred water management options (WMOs) to face climate change related challenges and to foster adaptation in four Mediterranean river basins. The challenges and WMOs of the four river basins identified by stakeholders were analysed examining to what extent the WMOs tackled the identified challenges. The impact of the WMOs resulting from a participatory modelling method was included in a comparative analysis of the stakeholders' WMOs preferences. The results indicate the participatory approach that was applied allowed local priorities and real-world challenges to be defined with adequate detail as well as the definition of tailored responses. The participatory impact analysis provided an integrated view of the river basin as an interrelated system. The participatory evaluation of the WMOs was able to consider a wide range of elements and was able reflect the combined preferences of the stakeholders. Moreover, it allowed groups of basin actors with highly diverse profiles and concerns to further promote sets of these WMOs as input into decision making processes.

38. Performance of Penman-Monteith FAO56 in a semiarid highland environment

Abstract

Reliable estimates of evapotranspiration are essential for irrigation and water resources planning and management. Although several methods are available for computing reference evapotranspiration ([ET.sub.o]), the provision of complete and accurate climate data is often a problem. Therefore, weighing lysimeter data from a semiarid highland environment were used to evaluate the performance of six commonly used reference evapotranspiration estimation methods with different data requirements (Penman-Monteith-FAO56, Priestley-Taylor, Radiation-FAO24, Hargreaves, Blaney-Criddle, Class A pan). The lysimeter experiments were conducted at Ankara Research Institute of Rural Services in Turkey, during the April-October cropping seasons of the years 2000-2002. The average [ET.sub.o] for the three seasons, computed from the lysimeter data, was 964 mm. The Penman-Monteith-FAO56 method was also evaluated for cases where relative humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, or all three parameters would be missing. This resulted in a total of 10 different methods. The RMS errors (RMSE) and index of agreement for the daily data and the monthly averages as well as the mean absolute error (MAE) for the seasonal totals were computed to compare these methods. The methods were ranked based on the sum of the ranks for all five evaluation criteria. The Penman-Montheith-FAO56 method with the full data set, with replacement of wind speed, and with replacement of relative humidity took the top three spots, with MAEs for the seasonal totals ranging between 40 and 70 mm. The Hargreaves method came in fourth (MAE 54 mm), followed by the Penman-Montheith-FAO56 method with replacement of all three parameters (MAE 57 mm). The RMSE for the monthly average [ET.sub.o] was 0.43 and 0.50 mm x [days.sup.-1] for the Penman-Monteith-FAO56 without and with replacement of all three parameters and 0.48 mm x [days.sup.-1] for Hargreaves. Thus, if only temperature data would be available, the much easier to use Hargreaves method would be preferred above the Penman-Montheith-FAO56 equation with replacement of humidity, radiation, and wind speed data, for this semiarid highland environment.
