Abstract

Millimeter and centimeter observations are discovering an increasing number of interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs) in a large variety of star forming sites, from the earliest stages of star formation to protoplanetary disks and in comets. In this context it is pivotal to understand how the solid phase interactions between iCOMs and grain surfaces influence the thermal desorption process and, therefore, the presence of molecular species in the gas phase. In laboratory, it is possible to simulate the thermal desorption process deriving important parameters such as the desorption temperatures and energies. We report new laboratory results on temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) from olivine dust of astrophysical relevant ice mixtures of water, acetonitrile, and acetaldehyde. We found that in the presence of grains, only a fraction of acetaldehyde and acetonitrile desorbs at about 100 K and 120 K respectively, while 40% of the molecules are retained by fluffy grains of the order of 100 {\mu}m up to temperatures of 190-210 K. In contrast with the typical assumption that all molecules are desorbed in regions with temperatures higher than 100 K, this result implies that about 40% of the molecules can survive on the grains enabling the delivery of volatiles towards regions with temperatures as high as 200 K and shifting inwards the position of the snowlines in protoplanetary disks. These studies offer a necessary support to interpret observational data and may help our understanding of iCOMs formation providing an estimate of the fraction of molecules released at various temperatures., Comment: Accepted for Publication on Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

Aims. Formamide (HCONH2) is the simplest molecule containing the peptide bond first detected in the gas phase in Orion-KL and SgrB2. In recent years, it has been observed in high temperature regions such as hot corinos, where thermal desorption is responsible for the sublimation of frozen mantles into the gas phase. The interpretation of observations can benefit from information gathered in the laboratory, where it is possible to simulate the thermal desorption process and to study formamide under simulated space conditions such as UV irradiation. Methods. Here, two laboratory analyses are reported: we studied formamide photo-stability under UV irradiation when it is adsorbed by space relevant minerals at 63 K and in the vacuum regime. We also investigated temperature programmed desorption of pure formamide ice in the presence of TiO2 dust before and after UV irradiation. Results. Through these analyses, the effects of UV degradation and the interaction between formamide and different minerals are compared.We find that silicates, both hydrates and anhydrates, offer molecules a higher level of protection from UV degradation than mineral oxides. The desorption temperature found for pure formamide is 220 K. The desorption temperature increases to 250 K when the formamide desorbs from the surface of TiO2 grains. Conclusions. Through the experiments outlined here, it is possible to follow the desorption of formamide and its fragments, simulate the desorption process in star forming regions and hot corinos, and constrain parameters such as the thermal desorption temperature of formamide and its fragments and the binding energies involved. Abstract

Comet 103P/Hartley~2 was observed on Nov. 1-6, 2010, coinciding with the fly-by of the space probe EPOXI. The goal was to connect the large scale phenomena observed from the ground, with those at small scale observed from the spacecraft. The comet showed strong activity correlated with the rotation of its nucleus, also observed by the spacecraft. We report here the characterization of the solid component produced by this activity, via observations of the emission in two spectral regions where only grain scattering of the solar radiation is present. We show that the grains produced by this activity had a lifetime of the order of 5 hours, compatible with the spacecraft observations of the large icy chunks. Moreover, the grains produced by one of the active regions have a very red color. This suggests an organic component mixed with the ice in the grains., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Icarus in press

Abstract

On May 27th 2010, the Italian astronomical community learned with concern that the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) was going to be suppressed, and that its employees were going to be transferred to the National Research Council (CNR). It was not clear if this applied to all employees (i.e. also to researchers hired on short-term contracts), and how this was going to happen in practice. In this letter, we give a brief historical overview of INAF and present a short chronicle of the few eventful days that followed. Experimental results on the formation of molecular hydrogen on amorphous silicate surfaces are presented and analyzed using a rate equation model. The energy barriers for the relevant diffusion and desorption processes are obtained. They turn out to be significantly higher than those obtained for polycrystalline silicates, demonstrating the importance of grain morphology. Using these barriers we evaluate the efficiency of molecular hydrogen formation on amorphous silicate grains under interstellar conditions. Abstract

THE ''LIfe in Space'' project was funded in the wake of the Italian Space Agency's proposal for the development of a network of institutions and laboratories conceived to implement Italian participation in space astrobiology experiments. Of primary concern for this project is the study of the origin of life in the Universe, a focus that will promote investigation into prebiotic chemistry in various possible scenarios, whether in polar or nonpolar solvents (e.g., Titan's environment). Such results will link with study of the effects of simulated space conditions on possible chemical bio- signatures. The limits of life as we know it will be investigated in ground-based experiments with microorganisms that have already demonstrated their resistance to extreme environments on Earth and to real or simulated space conditions. The potential survival of microorganisms will also be examined with up-to-date molecular methods. The ability of some microorganisms to produce atmospheric and surface biosignatures when exposed to simulated conditions will be tested and compared with the possible existence of bio- signatures on potentially habitable exoplanets. Furthermore, the search for potentially habitable exoplanets, with space- based observational methods, will be optimized by way of dedicated climate models with the capacity to predict the detectability of atmospheric biosignatures for a broad range of planetary conditions. The project embraces the four most important topics in astrobiological research, as listed below, along with relevant contributions from the participating Italian institutions. Origins and evolution of organic compounds of biological significance in space (comets, asteroids, rocky planets, and moons); Prebiotic syntheses, origin of life, and early life; The limits of life and biological habitability: origin, evolution and adaptation of life in extreme environments on Earth and in space; Biomarkers for life detection in the Solar System and on exoplanets.

Abstract

"LICIACube - the Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids" is a space mission of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), based on a 6U cubesat that will be part of the NASA DART mission. It has the aim to enhance the information gained from the main probe impact on the secondary member of the (65803) Didymos binary asteroid system and to allow dedicated scientific investigations. DART probe will be launched in mid 2021 and LICIACube will be hosted as piggyback during the 15 months of interplanetary cruise, then released five days before the impact and autonomously guided along its fly-by trajectory. Several unique images of the effects of the DART impact on the asteroid, such as e.g. the formation and the development of the plume potentially determined by the impact itself, will be collected and transmitted to Earth. LICIACube, whose design, integration and test have been assigned to the aerospace company Argotec, is an ASI project. The scientific team is led by National Institute of Astrophysics (OAR, IAPS, OAA, OAPd, OATs) with the support of IFAC-CNR and University Parthenope of Naples. The team is enriched by University of Bologna, for orbit determination and satellite navigation, and Polytechnic of Milan, for mission analysis and optimization. LICIACube will be the first Italian autonomous mission in deep space, also for the Ground Segment, with data archiving and processing managed by the ASI Space Science Data Center: the whole project and its present status-of-the-art will be presented and discussed together with the in situ observing strategy and the expected performances.

Abstract

Among the main scientific objectives of the Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) spacecraft, an Italian Space Agency space mission, the study of the plume ejecta evolution after the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact is of particular importance. We focus on investigating the dust dynamics of the plume evolution using numerical simulations of dust particles motion. The particles dynamics is governed by two main forces - gravity and solar radiation pressure. In our simulations the dust dynamical behavior was evaluated assuming initial velocity and torque of the particle after the DART impact. Based on a 3D+t non-spherical dust model that solves the Euler dynamical and kinetic equations and considering free-collisional dust regime we study the effects on the particle dynamics considering different shapes, initial particle orientation and velocities as well as torque. In addition, we performed dust simulations for different surface material cases considering the physical parameters of (65803) Didymos. The optical thickness of the plume varies not only due to the particles size distribution but also due to their shapes and orientations. Indeed, if a particle is characterized by an initial torque and hence rotate during the plume evolution then its velocity will be different than a non-rotating one with the same mass, shape and size. We are currently using a point source scaling model for initial setup of parameters. In this work we will shortly address at what distance particles could eventually stop to accelerate/decelerate as a result of the balance among the forces governing their motion. This study coupled with LICIACube plume images will further constrain the momentum transfer efficiency ?, in particular the local surface properties as strength, density and porosity as well as the ejecta velocity and size distribution.
