We show, using the pseudo-$C_\ell$ technique, how to estimate cosmic shear and galaxy-galaxy lensing power spectra that are insensitive to the effects of multiple sources of lensing bias including source-lens clustering, magnification bias and obscuration effects. All of these effects are of significant concern for ongoing and near-future Stage-IV cosmic shear surveys. Their common attribute is that they all introduce a cosmological dependence into the selection of the galaxy shear sample. Here, we show how a simple adaptation of the pseudo-$C_\ell$ method can help to suppress these biases to negligible levels in a model-independent way. Our approach is based on making pixelised maps of the shear field and then using a uniform weighting of those shear maps when extracting power spectra. To produce unbiased measurements, the weighting scheme must be independent of the cosmological signal, which makes the commonly-used inverse-variance weighting scheme unsuitable for cosmic shear measurements. We demonstrate this explicitly. A frequently-cited motivation for using inverse-variance weights is to minimize the errors on the resultant power spectra. We find that, for a Stage-IV-like survey configuration, this motivation is not compelling: the precision of power spectra recovered from uniform-weighted maps is only very slightly degraded compared to those recovered from an inverse-variance analysis, and we predict no degradation in cosmological parameter constraints. We suggest that other 2-point statistics, such as real-space correlation functions, can be rendered equally robust to these lensing biases by applying those estimators to pixelised shear maps using a uniform weighting scheme., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We generalize Yekutieli-Zhang's noncommutative Serre Duality Theorem to the setting of noncommutative spaces associated to dg-algebras. As an application, we establish some finiteness properties of derived global sections over such noncommutative spaces. Along the way, we generalize Yekutieli's notion of a balanced dualizing complex to the setting of dg-algebras and establish some cases in which they exist., Comment: 14 pages

Jupiter's icy moon Ganymede has a tenuous exosphere produced by sputtering and possibly sublimation of water ice. To date, only atomic hydrogen and oxygen have been directly detected in this exosphere. Here, we present observations of Ganymede's CO$_2$ exosphere obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope. CO$_2$ gas is observed over different terrain types, mainly over those exposed to intense Jovian plasma irradiation, as well as over some bright or dark terrains. Despite warm surface temperatures, the CO$_2$ abundance over equatorial subsolar regions is low. CO$_2$ vapor has the highest abundance over the north polar cap of the leading hemisphere, reaching a surface pressure of 1 pbar. From modeling we show that the local enhancement observed near 12 h local time in this region can be explained by the presence of cold traps enabling CO$_2$ adsorption. However, whether the release mechanism in this high-latitude region is sputtering or sublimation remains unclear. The north polar cap of the leading hemisphere also has unique surface-ice properties, probably linked to the presence of the large atmospheric CO2 excess over this region. These CO2 molecules might have been initially released in the atmosphere after the radiolysis of CO$_2$ precursors, or from the sputtering of CO$_2$ embedded in the H$_2$O ice bedrock. Dark terrains (regiones), more widespread on the north versus south polar regions, possibly harbor CO$_2$ precursors. CO$_2$ molecules would then be redistributed via cold trapping on ice-rich terrains of the polar cap and be diurnally released and redeposited on these terrains. H$_2$O$_2$ is part of Europa's water-ice radiolytic cycle and a potential source of oxidants to Europa's subsurface ocean. However, factors controlling the concentration of this critical surface species remain unclear. Though laboratory experiments suggest that Europa's H$_2$O$_2$ should be concentrated in the coldest, most ice-rich regions toward the poles, Keck adaptive optics observations have shown the strongest H$_2$O$_2$ signatures in comparatively warm, salt-bearing terrain at low latitudes. As a result, it was suggested that the local non-ice composition of these terrains -- particularly hypothesized enrichments of CO$_2$ -- may be a more dominant control on H$_2$O$_2$ than temperature or water-ice abundance. Here, we use observations of Europa from the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, Keck Observatory, and JWST to disentangle the potential effects of temperature and composition. In order to isolate the effect of temperature on Europa's H$_2$O$_2$, we use the ground-based observations to assess its response to temperature changes over timescales associated with Europa's daily eclipse and diurnal cycle. We use JWST Cycle 1 data to look for any geographic correlation between Europa's H$_2$O$_2$ and CO$_2$. Both changes in Europa's 3.5-$\mu$m H$_2$O$_2$ absorption band from pre to post eclipse and across a local day suggest minimal effects of the local temperature on these timescales. In contrast, the JWST observations show a strong positive correlation between Europa's H$_2$O$_2$ and CO$_2$ bands, supporting the previously suggested possibility that the presence of CO$_2$ in the ice may enhance H$_2$O$_2$ concentrations via electron-scavenging., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, Accepted to the Planetary Science Journal

An important testable prediction of dynamical instability models for the early evolution of the Solar System is that Jupiter Trojans share a source population with the Kuiper belt. Concrete evidence of this prediction remains elusive, as Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) and Jupiter Trojans appear to have different surface compositions. We address the long-standing question of Trojan origin by finding a dynamical sub-population in the Kuiper belt with Trojan-like colors. Combining existing photometric data with our own surveys on Keck I and Palomar P200, we find that the low-perihelion ($q<30 $AU, $a>30 $AU) component of the Kuiper belt has colors that bifurcate similarly to the Jupiter Trojans, unlike Centaurs ($a<30 $AU) which have redder, Kuiper belt-like colors. To connect the Jupiter Trojans to the Kuiper belt, we test whether the distinct Trojan-like colors of low-perihelion KBOs result from surface processing, or are sourced from a specific population in the Kuiper belt. By simulating the evolution of the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey synthetic population of KBOs for four billion years, we find that differences in heating timescales cannot result in a significant depletion of Very Red low-perihelion KBOs as compared to the Centaurs. We find that the neutrally-colored scattered disk objects ($e>0.6$ KBOs) contribute more to the low-perihelion KBO population rather than Centaurs, resulting in their different colors., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Accepted to PSJ

Given a complex affine hypersurface with isolated singularity determined by a homogeneous polynomial, we identify the noncommutative Hodge structure on the periodic cyclic homology of its singularity category with the classical Hodge structure on the primitive cohomology of the associated projective hypersurface. As a consequence, we show that the Hodge conjecture for the projective hypersurface is equivalent to a dg-categorical analogue of the Hodge conjecture for the singularity category., Comment: 31 pages

A popular method for enhancing images involves learning the style of a professional photo editor using pairs of training images comprised of the original input with the editor-enhanced version. When manipulating images, many editing tools offer a feature that allows the user to manipulate a limited selection of familiar colors. Editing by color name allows easy adjustment of elements like the "blue" of the sky or the "green" of trees. Inspired by this approach to color manipulation, we propose NamedCurves, a learning-based image enhancement technique that separates the image into a small set of named colors. Our method learns to globally adjust the image for each specific named color via tone curves and then combines the images using an attention-based fusion mechanism to mimic spatial editing. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method against several competing methods on the well-known Adobe 5K dataset and the PPR10K dataset, showing notable improvements., Comment: European Conference on Computer Vision ECCV 2024

We present new frontiers in the modelling of the spectral energy distributions (SED) of active galaxies by introducing the radio-to-X-ray fitting capabilities of the publicly available Bayesian code AGNfitter. The new code release, called AGNfitter-rx, models the broad-band photometry covering the radio, infrared (IR), optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray bands consistently, using a combination of theoretical and semi-empirical models of the AGN and host galaxy emission. This framework enables the detailed characterization of four physical components of the active nuclei: the accretion disk, the hot dusty torus, the relativistic jets/core radio emission, and the hot corona; alongside modeling three components within the host galaxy: stellar populations, cold dust, and the radio emission from the star-forming regions. Applying AGNfitter-rx to a diverse sample of 36 AGN SEDs at z<0.7 from the AGN SED ATLAS, we investigate and compare the performance of state-of-the-art torus and accretion disk emission models on fit quality and inferred physical parameters. We find that clumpy torus models that include polar winds and semi-empirical accretion disk templates including emission line features significantly increase the fit quality in 67% of the sources, by effectively reducing by $2\sigma$ fit residuals in the $1.5-5 \mu \rm m$ and $0.7 \mu \rm m$ regimes.We demonstrate that, by applying AGNfitter-rx on photometric data, we are able to estimate inclination and opening angles of the torus, consistent with spectroscopic classifications within the AGN unified model, as well as black hole mass estimates in agreement with virial estimates based on H$\alpha$. The wavelength coverage and the flexibility for the inclusion of state-of-the-art theoretical models make AGNfitter-rx a unique tool for the further development of SED modelling for AGNs in present and future radio-to-X-ray galaxy surveys., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication by A&A

We examine high spatial resolution Galileo/NIMS observations of the young (~1 My - 20 My) impact features, Pwyll and Manann\'{a}n craters, on Europa's trailing hemisphere in an effort to constrain irradiation timescales. We characterize their composition using a linear spectral modeling analysis and find that both craters and their ejecta are depleted in hydrated sulfuric acid relative to nearby older terrain. This suggests that the radiolytic sulfur cycle has not yet had enough time to build up an equilibrium concentration of H2SO4, and places a strong lower limit of the age of the craters on the equilibrium timescale of the radiolytic sulfur cycle on Europa's trailing hemisphere. Additionally, we find that the dark and red material seen in the craters and proximal ejecta of Pwyll and Manann\'{a}n show the spectroscopic signature of hydrated, presumably endogenic salts. This suggests that the irradiation-induced darkening and redenning of endogenic salts thought to occur on Europa's trailing hemisphere has already happened at Pwyll and Manann\'{a}n, thereby placing an upper limit on the timescale by which salts are irradiation reddened., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures
