The guidelines for descriptive cataloging is a procedure manual published by the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) . It outlines the cataloging information to be included in the data fields for online input of technical publications. The text is arranged numerically, by field number, and includes Appendices A through N, with separate sections on special handling and search procedures for duplicate checking. Changes to the security classifications fields have been added to implement DoD 5200.1-R, Information Security Program Regulation. An enhanced version of this guideline for remote input is available as the Shared Bibliographic Input Manual. This thesis explores the nature of community work in Aotearoa, specifically women's involvement in radical practice. The research particularly aimed to present a portrait of the elements of contemporary feminist inspired practice, as well as to investigate the significance of ideology in the participants' work. A feminist research methodology is used, namely multiple, in depth, semi-structured interviewing. Three, two hour interviews were conducted individually with four women who work for social change. The interviews involved a reciprocal process of story telling and self reflection, where the women explored how they understand themselves and what has shaped their commitment to social change. The women's stories encompass personal and every day aspects of life, an articulation of their vision for the future, and a commentary on aspects of broader institutional change. The research identifies aspects of the social context currently effecting community work, including the impact of libertarian political philosophies, and the ramifications of sexual abuse of children. The insights gained are examined in the light of contemporary theories of community work and social change, in particular critical theory, feminism and postmodernism. The significance of ideology for community work practice is shown to be highly relevant for contemporary practice. Consequently, the Sayer Ideology Model (1990) of community work can be seen as having potential for the education of those working for social change. The current directions and issues for contemporary practice are identified, generally focusing on the unique aspects of our lives which are neglected and denied by the dominant patriarchal culture. A strong emphasis on aspects of women's spirituality was demonstrated, and this was strengthened by a feminist analysis and a strong political analysis. The radical agenda in community work is shown to be alive and growing, despite the challenges of the current context.

The theme of the 23rd Annual Military Librarians Workshop--held in Alexandria, VA and sponsored by the Defense Technical Information Center (Formerly Defense Documentation Center)--was Military Special Libraries in 1990. More than 150 military librarians participated in six individual task groups, consisting of a number of general sessions, highlighted by well-known speakers in the information industry. The respective discussion topics assigned to these groups were Contracting Out Library Services, Closing the Card Catalog, New Products and Services, Managing Libraries, Steady-State (No Growth) Libraries, and Basic Planning for Library Automation. The workshop general sessions, consisting of lecture presentations followed by questions and informal discussions, were interspersed in the program with task group meetings. Each task group had a full schedule of speakers on its specific topic to assist group members to define and propose solutions to future problems likely to confront military special librarians in the 1990's. Emphasis was placed on the impact of new technology on the changing role of the Library, its relationship to future user needs, and library management in the probable work situation in the 1990s. The ability of librarians and, more importantly, of users to cope with the changes foreseen was a major interest.
