2. Novel recruitment approaches and operational results for a statewide population Cohort for cancer research: The Healthy Oregon Project.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cancer health research relies on large-scale cohorts to derive generalizable results for different populations. While traditional epidemiological cohorts often use costly random sampling or self-motivated, preselected groups, a shift toward health system-based cohorts has emerged. However, such cohorts depend on participants remaining within a single system. Recent consumer engagement models using smartphone-based communication, driving projects, and social media have begun to upend these paradigms. METHODS: We initiated the Healthy Oregon Project (HOP) to support basic and clinical cancer research. HOP study employs a novel, cost-effective remote recruitment approach to effectively establish a large-scale cohort for population-based studies. The recruitment leverages the unique email account, the HOP website, and social media platforms to direct smartphone users to the study app, which facilitates saliva sample collection and survey administration. Monthly newsletters further facilitate engagement and outreach to broader communities. RESULTS: By the end of 2022, the HOP has enrolled approximately 35,000 participants aged 18-100 years (median = 44.2 years), comprising more than 1% of the Oregon adult population. Among those who have app access, ∼87% provided consent to genetic screening. The HOP monthly email newsletters have an average open rate of 38%. Efforts continue to be made to improve survey response rates. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the efficacy of remote recruitment approaches in establishing large-scale cohorts for population-based cancer studies. The implementation of the study facilitates the collection of extensive survey and biological data into a repository that can be broadly shared and supports collaborative clinical and translational research.

10. Cultivating a 'Collegial Turn' in Doctoral Education

Abstract

Doctoral students' understandings of collegiality and their collegial practices warrant specific attention, yet are often addressed as implicit to peer learning and research communities, and ensconced in transferable skills as 'teamwork'. This article reports on research involving 43 doctoral students at one New Zealand university. Using a hybrid methodology that synergised social practice theory and phenomenography, the students participated in focus groups and paired hierarchical card sorting activities. The resultant conversations indicated that collegiality among doctoral students can manifest as four types of collegial practices: professional, intellectual, social, and emotional collegiality. Collegial practices offer doctoral students purposeful interaction, professional relationships, and respite from some of the emotional challenges of the doctorate. Accordingly, I argue that students, academics, and academic developers could adopt a more comprehensive approach than present to cultivate an environment of collegiality among doctoral students, and that collegial practices should be considered integral to doctoral professional development.

13. Exploring the Use of Social Media by Community-Engaged University People

Abstract

This article describes one aspect of a research project that sought to describe and interpret the perspectives of university colleagues who are community-engaged, about their community-engagement, within one research-intensive university in New Zealand. We explored the communication devices and processes used during community engagement, with a focus on social media, and in the context of identifying the professional development needs of colleagues within our institution. Our research involved an inductive analysis of 25 interviews with community-engaged university people, supported by context-generating discussions and workshops. Our data reveals reoccurring themes involving varying degrees of successful targeted use of social media, disappointment in the performance of social media, and confidence in traditional communication approaches. Overall we identified rational decision-making to find workable approaches, in an academic environment supported by skill transfer from private life to work life. We discuss the implications of our research to the roles and practices of academic development.

14. Do We Teach Our Students to Share and to Care?

Abstract

We explored how academic departments, university teachers and students in one research-led university in New Zealand identified and addressed challenges in achieving three particular graduate attributes. These attributes (global perspective, environmental literacy and those aspect of ethics that involve personal social responsibility) are distinctive in that they may encompass values, attitudes and future behaviours, in addition to knowledge and skills. We documented formal processes in each participating department; interviewed university teachers to understand how they conceptualised these attributes and the processes of teaching them; explored student perspectives via individual and group interviews and written responses to verbal questions in groups; held project-based and departmental discussions to help us understand how the diversity of perspectives and processes extant in this institution were understood; and developed resources to explore and support future academic engagement with the issues that have arisen in this research. We discuss a potential mismatch between what this institution's strategic documentation aspires to and how departments and their teachers are managing these expectations, and we link this concern to the academic discourse on roles, responsibilities and capabilities of higher education. Our research has implications for all higher education institutions that express their aspirations or intentions for the values that their students will learn and we propose a research agenda to address our concerns.

15. Testing the Testing: Validity of a State Growth Model

Abstract

Possible threats to the validity of North Carolina's accountability model used to predict academic growth were investigated in two ways: the state's regression equations were replicated but updated to utilize current testing data and not that from years past as in the state's current model; and the updated equations were expanded to include additional socioeconomic, financial, and demographic variables. The updated equations were found to explain a very low proportion of the variance in growth statewide, with R[superscript 2] values ranging from 0.054 to 0.135. This suggests that the state's model is extremely unpredictive of academic growth. The expanded equations were found to offer almost twice as much predictive power as the updated equations and, hence, the state's model. (Contains 8 tables.)

18. Work Experience Guide: How to Create a Work Experience Program at Your School

Abstract

The intent of this manual is to provide some templates and direction to schools that are looking for ideas of how to incorporate work experience into their curriculum for youth with disabilities. Hamilton Middle School served as a pilot site for one of the Rural Institute Transition Projects from 2006-2008. The school administration eagerly embraced the idea of offering community-based work experiences to their students with disabilities once the initial structure of the program was developed for them. The authors hope that other schools will be able to benefit from the template and examples that they developed with that school and have included as resources in this publication. One of the main points to take away from this school's experience is that they used the resources that they had available to offer a new service to youth. They didn't have any increase in cost; they used their existing resources differently. 19. Valuing and Evaluating Community-Engaged Scholarship

Abstract

This article examines the nature of, and need for, evaluation of community-engaged university teaching and research. The research was conducted as part of a larger project aimed at improving institutional understanding of how to best support community-engaged university people. We interviewed 25 community-engaged colleagues, and used a general inductive approach to identify four recurring themes relating to evaluation within interview transcripts. The themes emphasised diverse conceptualisations of the nature of evaluation in this context, and concomitant concerns about where their community engagement fits within our higher education institution. Our research may help our institution, and others, to decide how best to provide institutional support to university people who choose to become community-engaged.

Abstract

We explored opportunities, advantages and barriers to enabling students to establish student-led learning events at a New Zealand university. We used an action-research approach to explore if students felt empowered to use the infrastructure of this university to realise something that they themselves set out to achieve. We discovered that, in achieving a series of open discussions about sustainability, students adopted a democratic, distributed form of decision-making, not unlike a typical academic model, with leaders taking temporary roles that included passing on responsibility to those who followed. Students were proud of the events they created and identified the discussion format as something different from their experience as undergraduate students in our institution. This article, co-authored by staff and students, considers whether higher education processes that do empower students do so adequately and the extent to which students are prepared by higher education to take on powerful roles after they graduate.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to account for the meaning practitioners and clients gave to Guided Human Equine Interactions (GHEI). GHEI is a term that covers a range of interactions between human and horse for the purpose of facilitating emotional and social development in the human participants. There is paucity of research to evidence assumptions inherent in practice and little is known about the meaning participants give to GHEI. Despite this, practice is rapidly expanding in Britain following similar growth in America where GHEI originated. An underlying premise in this thesis is that the discourses employed to account for equine involvement in therapy and learning will construct practice. Therefore, language samples were obtained from interviews with ten GHEI practitioners, two GHEI websites, and from the personal experience of one client through their diary entries. The data were interrogated, analysed and interpreted according to a discursive strategy based on work by Ballinger and Cheek (2006). Five dominant discourses (metaphysical, sensory, social, mental distress and symbolic) were surfaced across three studies. These discourses served differing functions and woven together, formed a discursive framework that accounted for the meaning practitioners and clients gave to GHEI. This incorporated not only the cognitive, affective and behavioural elements seen in mental health interventions such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but also included the added dimensions of spiritual, sensory and symbolic meaning. These added factors provided for a more holistic experience for the client than office based therapy alone. The insights gained suggest the horse has an impact, not only on the spatial distancing between the client and practitioner, but also on their relational distancing. This distancing enables the client to be positioned as the expert at the centre of the intervention. However, expert client positioning was only apparent as long as the practitioner did not draw on a dominant mental distress discourse, or tried to market GHEI. There was a lack of risk discourse across all studies, which was considered an important added factor in positioning the client as expert. Spatial and relational distancing may assist GHEI practitioners in being alongside individuals who decline to engage in more formal interventions It was noted that adaptation had taken place in the discursive construction of GHEI from practice developed in America. This had led to culturally relevant practice being accounted for in Britain. It was concluded that the inclusion of a horse in therapeutic and learning practice is at an intersection between past discourses where the metaphysical, such as spirit and healing, were privileged and contemporary discourses where social care and treatment of mental illness are authoritative. There is a symbiotic relationship between the function of the horse in accounting for the meaning given to GHEI and the function of dominant discourses. This results in a centaur-like enmeshment of human and horse.

26. Assessing personality disorder through storymaking : a reliability and validity study of the 6-Part Story Method

The 6-Part Story Method (6PSM) involves the participant creating and telling a fictional story which is then discussed with the interviewer. Stories were recorded from NHS mental health clinicians, and from adult mental health patients with and without a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Statements describing the stories could be reliably scored by raters who were blind to the authorship of the stories. It was possible to use these statements to assemble a scale with good internal consistency, inter-rater reliability and test- retest reliability over a one-month period. The scale statements all related to the degree of negativity and failure expressed in the story. Ratings on this negativity scale given to stories from patients with a cluster B personality disorder diagnosis were significantly higher than the ratings given to stories from other participants. The text of the story transcriptions was analysed using computerised text analysis programs, which detected some patterns of language use that appeared to distinguish reliably between stories from participants with BPD and other stories. Participants were asked for their reactions to the 6PSM process, and their responses analysed using a Grounded Theory approach. This suggested that for most participants, the 6PSM works through increasingly close emotional identification with an initially distant and metaphorical main character.

27. How Democratic Is Higher Education for Sustainable Development?

Abstract

We wondered how "democracy" was being used and communicated within the higher education discourse of "education for sustainability," or "for sustainable development" (ES/ESD). We used a philosophical hermeneutic approach to explore the sense or senses in which the concept of democracy is used within this literature and supported our analysis by incorporating text about democracy from other disciplines. We conclude from our analysis that the concept of democracy within ES/ESD texts has evolved to suggest many meanings that in their entirety do not support our shared research mission towards ES/ESD. At the pens of ES/ESD scholars, democracy may have become one of Sartori's intolerably blunted conceptual tools.

Abstract

With increasing focus on the outcomes of doctoral education, especially regarding employability, we aimed to explore how PhD graduates from humanities and social sciences (HASS), and science disciplines perceived the development of a holistic set of graduate attributes during their doctoral study and the application of these attributes in the workplace. We analysed 136 survey responses and interviews with 21 PhD graduates from one NZ and two US universities. We found that overall, PhD graduates are satisfied with their development as researchers, but had concerns regarding the development of some transferrable skills and attributes. Graduates from the three universities perceived the application of attributes in the workplace similarly. Comparisons of graduate attribute application to their development revealed the following areas requiring better support: teamwork, communication, project management, entrepreneurship, and networking. While development of affective attributes related to global citizenship was lower than expected, graduates perceived these were not always required in the workplace. Universities should consider how their doctoral training programmes can promote a more holistic development of desirable skills and attributes. We provide a possible categorisation to evaluate attainment of desirable attributes for PhD graduates, to ensure researchers and institutions are targeting key attributes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Higher education institutions are seeking greater community engagement through academic, social and civic activity. In response, researcher attention has turned to impacts on students' education, and benefits to both university and community partners. This phenomenographic study examines how a diverse group of teachers, researchers and administrators at one New Zealand university conceptualised their involvement in community-engaged learning and teaching. We identified an outcome space where university people conceived their community engagement in three ways: within an expert/novice discourse, as advocacy, and in the most complex conception, as reciprocal learning. When working with and within communities, we suggest that university people should be supported to approach community engagement as reciprocal learning rather than adopting approaches that render community partners in passive roles.

It has successfully recruited over 35,000 participants, representing over 1% of the adult population in Oregon, using smartphone-based communication and social media. The study emphasizes the importance of collecting comprehensive survey and biological data for collaborative research. HOP also offers genetic health screening for cancer risk and aims to improve early detection strategies. Efforts have been made to engage participants through various methods, including in-person events and social media campaigns. The study population is diverse, but there are challenges in terms of long-term engagement and demographic limitations. The authors suggest integrating HOP with other similar projects across the US to diversify the population base and provide equal access to research cohorts. Abstract

Peer learning models in pre-service teacher education are in the early stages of implementation. In this article, we evaluated a pilot Peer-Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program that supplemented a course for pre-service teachers at one New Zealand university. PASS participants discussed experiences of the program, revealing tensions between what students and facilitators felt should happen in PASS, and how they acted differently. We explained these tensions by considering how social and cognitive congruence operated between students and facilitators. The majority of our peer facilitators were pre-service teachers, suggesting these intersecting roles offered important considerations for reciprocity in near-peer relationships, and joint negotiations of roles and responsibilities. We conclude this article with implications for future training of PASS facilitators, including those training as teachers.
