Resumen. Los peces teleósteos son el grupo más diverso de vertebrados y presentan gran variedad de formas de reproducción. El gonocorismo es la forma más común de reproducción entre los peces. Sin embargo, un número significativo de peces presenta hermafroditismo, es decir, en el mismo individuo se encuentran ambos sexos de manera simultánea o secuencial. El punto en el tiempo en el cual ocurre el cambio de sexo no es necesariamente instantáneo y puede ser interpretado en muchos niveles diferentes (por comportamiento social, morfológico y por edad). Los mecanismos de determinación y diferenciación sexual están involucrados en el cambio de sexo y pueden verse afectados por la herencia genética o por cambios ambientales en los que se encuentre el individuo. La actividad aromatasa, estradiol, 11-Ketotestosterona y testosterona están involucrados en la regulación del proceso reproductivo de hembras y machos hermafroditas. El área pre-óptica (POA) y el hipotálamo son las dos regiones del cerebro encargadas del control de la fisiología reproductiva y comportamiento reproductivo de los peces. Dentro del estatus endocrino de peces hermafroditas secuenciales, se observan grandes similitudes con la endocrinología de especies gonocóricas. El domesticar especies hermafroditas con fines reproductivos, puede traer consigo grandes complicaciones, la más común es mantener constante la proporción de sexos, por lo tanto, el control del sexo es una prioridad. Para lograrlo es necesario conocer la fisiología reproductiva de la especie seleccionada e implementar alguna estrategia para manipular ese cambio de sexo, ya sea mediante factores sociales o terapias hormonales. Abstract. The teleost fishes are the most diverse group of vertebrates and present a great variety in their reproduction form. Gonocorism is the most common form of reproduction among fish. However, a significant number of fish present hermaphroditism, that is, the same individual presents both sexes, simultaneously or sequentially. The point in time at which the sex change occurs is not necessarily instantaneous and can be interpreted at many different levels (by social, morphological and age behavior). The mechanisms of sexual determination and sexual differentiation are involved in this sex change and may be affected by the genetic inheritance or by the environmental changes in which an individual finds itself. The activity aromatase, estradiol, 11-ketotestosterone and testosterone are involved in the regulation of the reproductive process of hermaphroditic females and males. The pre-optic area (POA) and the hypothalamus are the two regions of the brain responsible for the control of the reproductive physiology and reproductive behavior of fish. Within the endocrine status of sequential hermaphroditic fish, great similarities with the endocrinology of gonochoric species are observed. Taming hermaphroditic species for reproductive purposes can bring great complications; the most common is to keep the desired sex ratio constant, therefore, the control of sex is a priority. To achieve this, it is necessary to know the reproductive physiology of the selected species and implement some strategy to manipulate this sex change, either through social factors or hormonal therapies.

This study investigated the tolerance of first-feeding larvae of spotted sand bass Paralabrax maculatofasciatus and spotted rose snapper Lutjanus guttatus to acute hyperosmotic stress. P. maculatofasciatus and L. guttatus embryos were incubated in 48-well microplates at 23 and 28°C, respectively. The first-feeding larvae were exposed in triplicate to salinities of 35 to 95 g L-1 or 35 to 85 g L-1, and survival was monitored from 0.5-3.5 h or 0.5-53 h, for P. maculatofasciatus and L. guttatus, respectively. The results showed that mortality increased differently among treatments from the first exposure time in each species. Extreme salinities were lethal in 30 min. Salinities close to the control were sub lethal. At intermediate salinities, mortality was fitted to a potential or linear model. For P. maculatofasciatus, the LC50 values obtained between 0.5 and 3.5 h were 73.4 to 65.4 g L-1. For L. guttatus the LC50 values obtained between 2 and 5 h were 57.3 to 54.5 g L-1. Comparison of LC50 between species showed that P. maculatofasciatus larvae had a higher tolerance to hyperosmotic stress. Based on the results for each species, it is recommended to expose to 70 g L-1 for 1 h for P. maculatofasciatus and 57 g L-1 for 2 h for L. guttatus when conducting hyperosmotic stress tests. This stress test is objective, simple, and can be used in both studies on broodstock nutrition and management and in hatcheries as a quality control method. Resumen: En este estudio se investigó la tolerancia de larvas a la primera alimentación de la cabrilla arenera Paralabrax maculatofasciatus y del pargo flamenco Lutjanus guttatus a un estrés hiperosmótico agudo. Embriones de P. maculatofasciatus y L. guttatus fueron incubados en microplacas de 48 celdas a 23 y 28°C, respectivamente. Larvas de primera alimentación fueron expuestas por triplicado a salinidades de 35 a 95 g L-1 ó 35 a 85 g L-1, y la supervivencia fue monitoreada de 0,5 a 3,5 h ó 0,5 a 53 h, para P. maculatofasciatus y L. guttatus, respectivamente. Los resultados mostraron que la mortalidad aumentó de manera diferente entre los tratamientos desde el primer tiempo de exposición en cada especie. Salinidades extremas fueron letales en 30 min. Salinidades cercanas al control fueron sub-letales. En salinidades intermedias, la mortalidad se ajustó a un modelo potencial o lineal. Para P. maculatofasciatus, los valores de LC50 obtenidos entre 0,5 y 3,5 h fueron de 73,4 a 65,4 g L-1. Para L. guttatus los valores de LC50 obtenidos entre 2 y 5 h fueron de 57,3 a 54,5 g L-1. La comparación de LC50 entre especies mostró que las larvas de P. maculatofasciatus tuvieron una mayor tolerancia al estrés hiperosmótico. Con base en los resultados obtenidos en cada especie, se recomienda la exposición a 70 g L-1 por 1 h para P. maculatofasciatus y 57 g L-1 por 2 h para L. guttatus, cuando se realicen pruebas de estrés hiperosmótico. Esta prueba de estrés es objetiva, sencilla y puede utilizarse tanto en estudios sobre nutrición y manejo de reproductores como en plantas de producción de juveniles como método de control de calidad.

Los laboratorios acuícolas altamente dependientes de Nannochloropsis sp. desarrollan mecanismos para su producción masiva, con el desafío de poder extraer altas concentraciones celulares. La floculación por agentes alcalinos es una alternativa que promete mayores ventajas, y el hidróxido de sodio puede ser el agente floculante más conveniente. Sin embargo, para lograr una eficiencia máxima de floculación son determinantes la cantidad del agente floculante, tiempo de exposición, concentración celular y tipo de microalga. Por lo anterior, se determinó la cantidad de NaOH 0,5N y el tiempo de exposición necesarios para lograr un pH óptimo de floculación en cosechas de Nannochloropsis sp. con concentraciones celulares mayores a 50x10(6) cél mL-1. Los resultados mostraron que con 17 mL de NaOH 0,5N por litro de cultivo de microalgas se puede lograr una eficiencia de floculación de 94,9% a pH 9,7 en menos de 60 min. Las células del sobrenadante (subproducto del proceso) fueron viables como inóculo de un nuevo cultivo de microalgas. El concentrado microalgal (355,7x10(6) cél mL-1, peso seco 2,03 g L-1) obtenido fue adecuado como alimento para rotíferos. Por lo tanto, se recomienda el empleo de NaOH 0,5N como método simple, práctico y de bajo costo para producir concentrados de Nannochloropsis sp. con fines acuícolas. Flocculation by alkaline agents is an alternative that promises greater advantages, and sodium hydroxide may be the most convenient. However, to achieve maximum efficiency of flocculation are important the amount of flocculent, exposure time, cell concentration and type of microalgae. Therefore, the amount of 0.5N NaOH and the exposure time required are investigated to Nannochloropsis sp., harvests at high density at 50x10(6) cells mL-1. The results show that with 17 mL NaOH 0.5N per liter of culture of microalgae can be achieved 94.9% flocculation efficiency at pH 9.7 in less than 60 min. Supernatant cells (byproduct of the process) were viable as inoculum of a new culture of microalgae. Microalgae concentrate (355.7x10(6) cells mL-1, dry weight 2.03 g L-1) produced was adequate as food for rotifers. Therefore, employment of 0.5N NaOH is recommended as a simple, convenient and inexpensive method for producing Nannochloropsis sp. concentrates for aquaculture purposes.
