Abstract

Solid organ transplant recipients are considered at high risk for COVID‐19 infection due to chronic immune suppression; little data currently exists on the manifestations and outcomes of COVID‐19 infection in lung transplant recipients. Here we report 8 cases of COVID‐19 identified in patients with a history of lung transplant. We describe the clinical course of disease as well as preexisting characteristics of these patients. 32. Mental Health Services in a School of Dentistry.

Abstract

This paper presents a rationale for and description of psychological services in the areas of consultation and education for university dental students at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry. The paper notes several factors pointing to the need for such services: first, while dental professionals and students are disinclined to seek help from mental health professionals via formal mental health systems, the need for mental health services for dentists and dental students is extensive and documented; second, data indicate that dentistry is a stressful occupation with physical and psychological stressors present during training. The document lists such stressors as financial burden, difficult curriculum, and stressful atmosphere in the clinical training setting. Results of such stressors, including depression, anxiety, fear, and tension are noted. A program of mental health education and consultation for dental students is outlined which is informal in nature, multifaceted yet systematic. Examples of the informal program elements include informal notification of available services, arranging for private office space, and providing informal "coffee-cup counseling" on a drop-in basis. While the program described is geographically specific, generalities about problems, issues and concerns can be useful for others interested in this area. (WAS)

33. A Communication Skills Training Course for Dental Students.

Abstract

A course in communication skills that is provided to all freshmen dental students at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry is described. The course is based primarily on the human relations training models of Blakeman (1975), Carkhuff (1969), and Egan (1975), and consists of six modules devoted to the skills of structuring, attending, basic responding, additive responding, asserting, and terminating. The model is developmental and sequential in that each stage is successful to the degree that the preceding stage has been mastered. While a combination of traditional classroom lecture, small group skills practice, and individualized and self-paced assignments is used, the attending and responding skills stages receive the greatest emphasis. Audiotape and videotape feedback and critique and realistic patient encounters are generated by role playing. Students are pretested and posttested on the discrimination and communication skills using a standardized five-point rating scale developed by Carkhuff (1969). Response measures include use of written responses to written, audiotape, and videotape stimulus material as well as use of taped verbal responses to role playing patients. A chart indicating specific verbal and nonverbal ways of communicating in accordance with the developmental communication model is presented, along with examples of communication to which the dentist needs to respond, and data indicating pretest and posttest scores on the discrimination and communication indexes. 34. A Proposed Model for Inservice Selection and Evaluation Using Cognitive Flexibility as a Major Criterion: A Preliminary Analysis.

Abstract

This proposed model conceived by the Atlanta Public Schools' Professional Leadership Program is concerned with bringing about change in the area of instruction and curriculum. The development of this leadership pilot program creates a climate for curriculum revision that facilitates individualization and vitalization of instruction as well as adapts the school program to the individual needs of all pupils. To accomplish the general objective, specific steps are utilized. The high priority needs of staff personnel related to individualizing and vitalizing instruction are identified. A critical mass of effective or potentially effective professional personnel who will function as catalytic change agents for creating a climate conducive to change is selected. In the critical mass of leaders, a high degree of proficiency and skill in group interaction techniques is developed. The change agents are charged with the responsibility of effecting constructive change in the direction of individualizing and vitalizing instruction. Consultative assistance is provided. 35. Goodbye Therapy: Use of Imagery Techniques for Problematic Grief Intervention.

Abstract

This document addresses the issue of problematic grief reactions, reactions which tend to be more common than are often realized and which may be a source of "existential" anxiety. It presents a treatment model which can be used with any loss-elicited grief reaction including the acute grief reaction typically encountered subsequent to the death of a close relative or friend, especially if the grief reaction becomes prolonged and unresolved. Variables which need to be assessed as determinants of the severity of the grief reaction and its prognosis are discussed, including intensity of the relationship, security involved in the attachment, degree of ambivalence, mode of separation, personality variables, social variables, and loss/grief history. The identification of obstacles to effective grieving is recommended. These barriers may include persistent desire for recovery of the loss object; the desire to express negative affect because of the loss but being unable to do so; difficulties in dealing with ambivalence and feelings of anger related to the loss; Pandora's box phenomenon; powerful covert contracts with the lost person or object; unfinished business and unexpressed secrets; reinforcement or secondary gain for inappropriate grief reactions; and absence of or limited coping skills and support network. The action phase of therapy incorporating the imagery restructuring technique is described as a systematic model consisting of these seven steps: structure; relaxation training; introduction of imagery; introduction of loss related images; imagery restructuring; coping imagery; and imagery projection. Abstract

Background/aim: Rugby union ('rugby') presents an above-average risk of injury to participants. BokSmart is a South African nationwide intervention that aims to reduce rugby-related injuries in players. This is achieved by educating coaches and referees to improve injury behaviour of players. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess if the receipt of injury-prevention education was associated with player behaviour.Methods: Junior (n=2279) and senior (n=1642) players, who attended merit-based South African Rugby tournaments (2008-2012), completed an anonymous questionnaire. Logistic regressions investigated if player injury-prevention behaviours were associated with the receipt of education on the same topic. Additionally, players' preferred sources of education were explored through frequency and χ2 analyses.Results: Of the 16 injury-prevention behaviours, 12 (75%) were associated with receiving education on that topic. The four behaviours not associated with education were: warming-up (before training and matches), and avoiding heat and massage post injury. Of the seven possible sources of this education, the majority of players chose either coaches or physiotherapists as their preferred media. In comparison with junior players, more senior players chose physiotherapists instead of coaches for warming-up and cooling-down education.Conclusions: The results of this study support, to a large degree, the strategy of BokSmart-influence of player behaviour through coach education. However, these findings also suggest that BokSmart could target team physiotherapists in addition to coaches and referees with their safety education.
