Abstract

In this paper we position a perspective for exploring ethical issues in the context of social media which we conceptualise as an instance of an information system (IS) artefact. We follow a general systems theory-informed view of the IS artefact (and hence social media), constituted by social, technology and information components. Information is placed at the nexus of the social and technology subsystems and positioned at the centre of moral claims. Differences between distinguishing characteristics of social media and IS artefacts that preceded its development and use raise new ethical issues and call into question the efficacy of applied ethics concepts in use in the IS field of study to effectively address these. Abstract

Becoming a competent IS/IT graduate is not a once-off event because rapid technological changes require that IS/IT graduates continually strive to be up-to-date and relevant. Continuous updating of knowledge, acquiring a diverse set of IS/IT/ICT competencies, and being competent is a problematic task globally, which requires building competencies comprising knowledge, skills, abilities, and values. This study employs Classic Grounded Theory Methodology to identify the main concern of senior IS undergraduates during their learning process, and how they resolve the concern. The students’ main concern emerged as a perceived lack of IS Competency. Maturing competency is a substantive theory which explains how these students attempt to resolve their concern. Three phases of the basic social process of Maturing Competency are student engagement, selfawareness of competency, and self-development. The findings suggest that creating an organic learning environment can be a useful approach to developing more competent IS graduates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Intended and Unintended Consequences of Student Use of an Online Questioning Environment

Abstract

While supplementation of face-to-face (F2F) teaching with online engagement is increasingly common, the educators' challenge of teaching F2F personalities and facilitating online personalities has not been widely explored. In this paper, we report on a project in which 1st-year students attended F2F sessions and engaged with an anonymous online questioning environment. The differences between students' F2F and online behaviour led to intended and unintended consequences. The purpose of this paper is to explore these intended and unintended consequences of technology use. The project was undertaken over a 3-year period, starting in 2004. In 2004, a pilot project was conducted based on a class of 35 students studying a 1st-year programming course in information systems. The investigation was again conducted in 2005 for the same course, this time with 63 students. In 2006, the project was extended to a class of 610 1st-year commerce students studying an introductory information systems course. In all cases, students met F2F and when online, engaged with an anonymous Web/SMS collaborative tool. The intended consequence was that a blending of F2F with online interaction extended student engagement beyond the limitation of a classroom and provided a forum for further collaboration and consultation. The intended outcome was achieved. An unintended consequence was that the tool provided the lecturer with diagnostic information that was used to impact on pedagogical designs. This was often a result of students taking on an online personality that would very often be extremely frank and honest about the manner in which the course was conducted, and how learning was taking place. The findings show that students used the tool in ways that exceeded the envisaged intention, and student use of the tool positively impacted on the curriculum, pedagogy and general running of the course. The paper concludes that integration of online engagement with F2F teaching adds value to the teaching and learning experience.

29. Utilisation-Focused Evaluation of ICT in Education: The Case of DFAQ Consultation Space

Abstract

This paper describes an evaluation of a web-based consultation space (a dynamic frequently asked questions environment--DFAQ) in which learners consult one another using questions, and in which both the flow of interaction and its artefacts become a resource available to a community of learners. The DFAQ is a special form of a Computer-Mediated-Communication tool specifically developed to facilitate question-based interaction. We argue that education is too complex a social structure to be evaluated using deterministic positivist quantitative approaches. Given the volatility of determining what constitutes value, costs, inputs and outputs and the complexity of dynamics of socialization, a non-deterministic qualitative approach, utilisation-focused evaluation approach is used. Our conclusion is that the DFAQ does contribute to students' academic performance and frees the lecturer-learner consultation time. (Contains 3 figures.)

Abstract

In previous studies, Knowledge Management (KM) strategies have been examined as objects of organizations, instead of scrutinizing their characteristics or relative quality and content. This study aims to examine the key characteristics of KM strategies in Agricultural Research Organizations (AROs) in East Africa in terms of what exists, what does not exist and why. To comprehensively answer the research questions and understand the phenomena under investigation the study adopted a pragmatism paradigm to allow facts and concerns to arise from the context. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed using semi-structured Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and a questionnaire respectively. A novel empirical description and explanation of the key characteristics of KM strategies in AROs in East Africa is presented. The study identifies the key concepts and gaps in the characteristics of KM strategies and elucidates what AROs in East Africa should do differently to coherently formulate and execute KM strategies in practice. The main characteristics of KM strategies in AROs in East Africa are practicability, technology-focus, alignment, implementation processes and relevance. Through abstraction and theorization of the key concepts, a detailed description and explanation as a reference for scholars and practitioners in the KM field is provided. Further, the study highlights context as an important and relevant perspective in particularizing the characteristics of a KM strategy and interpretation of related empirical findings. Future studies can use the concepts presented in this study to develop a theoretical framework for analyzing the characteristics of KM strategies in organizations. The idea of linking the study outcome to an empirical situation is a novel contribution. Abstract

Understanding how people make real-life decision choices has important implications for individuals and organisations. Various approaches have been explored in studying the issue of choice as it relates to Information Systems phenomena. There is still limited understanding of how individuals make natural choices when they are faced with many alternatives. This article presents Ethnographic Decision Tree Modelling (EDTM) developed by Gladwin as an appropriate method for understanding real-life choice in Information Systems research. Through a descriptive literature review, EDTM is introduced and its philosophical and theoretical basis is discussed. The study suggests how EDTM can be used to enrich contributions in IS research. Abstract

Cell phone usage has grown phenomenally in Africa, and particularly in South Africa where initial growth forecasts have been greatly exceeded. This technology therefore provides opportunities for services such as banking to reach critical mass. All major retail banks in South Africa provide cell phone banking, but very few customers actually use it. This study examines the factors that influence the adoption of cell phone banking in South Africa, as a means of understanding how to possibly increase the rate of adoption. A framework developed in Singapore identifying factors influencing the adoption of Internet banking was used as a basis, and amended to assess cell phone banking. Factors identified as influences included relative advantage, trialability, and consumer banking needs, with perceived risk having a major negative influence. [c] 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Social information systems, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have become an integral part of social life attracting billions of people and continuing to proliferate. While these systems are developed for specific purposes they can also contain embedded capability that allows their use in ways that compromise societal wellbeing. We approach this problem from the perspective of information systems (IS) development with the view that IS development paradigms incorporating moral and ethical considerations offer a proactive means of addressing this issue. Using the grounded theory method (GTM) this research in progress seeks to develop an explanatory theory behind the actions of IS developers in the creation of social information systems. In this manuscript we explore the utility of the affordance concept to illustrate the feasibility of proactively curbing the future unethical use of social information systems during their development. Then, after elaborating how variations of GTM shape the research contribution, the form of GTM to be used in the research is described. The research will contribute to moving IS practice towards a moral epistemology and inform IS development policy making bodies and broader society of the ethical obligations of those involved in IS development. Abstract

Research exploring reasons behind the failure of information system (IS) projects tends to focus on projects that have already failed rather than examine issues faced by IS project teams before the failure occurs. Our research addresses this gap by exploring the influence of culture on IS development (ISD) projects. The case study method is used to examine two strategic projects in a single organization in South Africa. A theory for analysing culture's influence during ISD is developed using inductive reasoning. Culture is conceptualized as dynamic and emergent with varying levels of culture occurring simultaneously in organizations. This research describes how the overlapping of different cultural levels raises issues for ISD teams. Comprehending the relevance of the multiple cultures that exist in ISD projects offers further opportunity for refining explanations for cultural contradictions. A typology of cultural contradictions that emerge during ISD is introduced and discussed. Furthermore, the findings indicate that despite variation in the context of each project, there is similarity in the nature and effect of emergent cultural contradictions.
