Gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron-star (BNS) mergers have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) and the fundamental interactions that determine its properties. However, Bayesian parameter estimation frameworks do not typically sample over microscopic nuclear-physics parameters that determine the EOS. One of the major hurdles in doing so is the computational cost involved in solving the neutron-star structure equations, known as the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations. In this paper, we explore approaches to emulating solutions for the TOV equations: Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP), Gaussian Processes (GP), and a data-driven variant of the reduced basis method (RBM). We implement these emulators for three different parameterizations of the nuclear EOS, each with a different degree of complexity represented by the number of model parameters. We find that our MLP-based emulators are generally more accurate than the other two algorithms whereas the RBM results in the largest speedup with respect to the full, high-fidelity TOV solver. We employ these emulators for a simple parameter inference using a potentially loud BNS observation, and show that the posteriors predicted by our emulators are in excellent agreement with those obtained from the full TOV solver., Comment: 13 pages and 9 figures. The next generation of ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors will observe mergers of black holes and neutron stars throughout cosmic time. A large number of the binary neutron star merger events will be observed with extreme high fidelity, and will provide stringent constraints on the equation of state of nuclear matter. In this paper, we investigate the systematic improvement in the measurability of the equation of state with increase in detector sensitivity by combining constraints obtained on the radius of a $1.4 \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ neutron star from a simulated source population. Since the measurability of the equation of state depends on its stiffness, we consider a range of realistic equations of state that span the current observational constraints. Gravitational-wave astronomy has revolutionized humanity's view of the universe, a revolution driven by observations that no other field can make. This white paper describes an observatory that builds on decades of investment by the National Science Foundation and that will drive discovery for decades to come: Cosmic Explorer. Major discoveries in astronomy are driven by three related improvements: better sensitivity, higher precision, and opening new observational windows. Cosmic Explorer promises all three and will deliver an order-of-magnitude greater sensitivity than LIGO. Cosmic Explorer will push the gravitational-wave frontier to almost the edge of the observable universe using technologies that have been proven by LIGO during its development. With the unprecedented sensitivity that only a new facility can deliver, Cosmic Explorer will make discoveries that cannot yet be anticipated, especially since gravitational waves are both synergistic with electromagnetic observations and can reach into regions of the universe that electromagnetic observations cannot explore. With Cosmic Explorer, scientists can use the universe as a laboratory to test the laws of physics and study the nature of matter. Cosmic Explorer allows the United States to continue its leading role in gravitational-wave science and the international network of next-generation observatories. Core-collapse supernovae are among the astrophysical sources of gravitational waves that could be detected by third-generation gravitational-wave detectors. Here, we analyze the gravitational-wave strain signals from two- and three-dimensional simulations of core-collapse supernovae generated using the code F{\sc{ornax}}. A subset of the two-dimensional simulations has non-zero core rotation at the core bounce. A dominant source of time changing quadrupole moment is the $l=2$ fundamental mode ($f-$ mode) oscillation of the proto-neutron star. From the time-frequency spectrogram of the gravitational-wave strain we see that, starting $\sim 400$ ms after the core bounce, most of the power lies within a narrow track that represents the frequency evolution of the $f-$mode oscillations. The $f-$mode frequencies obtained from linear perturbation analysis of the angle-averaged profile of the protoneutron star corroborate what we observe in the spectrograms of the gravitational-wave signal. We explore the measurability of the $f-$mode frequency evolution of protoneutron star for a supernova signal observed in the third-generation gravitational-wave detectors. Measurement of the frequency evolution can reveal information about the masses, radii, and densities of the proto-neutron stars. We find that if the third generation detectors observe a supernova within 10 kpc, we can measure these frequencies to within $\sim$90\% accuracy. We can also measure the energy emitted in the fundamental $f-$mode using the spectrogram data of the strain signal. We find that the energy in the $f-$mode can be measured to within 20\% error for signals observed by Cosmic Explorer using simulations with successful explosion, assuming source distances within 10 kpc., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

NASA's Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observed X-ray emission from the pulsar PSR J0030+0451 in 2018. Riley et al. reported Bayesian parameter measurements of the mass and the star's radius using pulse-profile modeling of the X-ray data. This paper reproduces their result using the open-source software X-PSI and publicly available data within expected statistical errors. We note the challenges we faced in reproducing the results and demonstrate that the analysis can be reproduced and reused in future works by changing the prior distribution for the radius and the sampler configuration. We find no significant change in the measurement of the mass and radius, demonstrating that the original result is robust to these changes. Finally, we provide a containerized working environment that facilitates third-party reproduction of the measurements of mass and radius of PSR J0030+0451 using the NICER observations., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We study the detectability of gravitational-wave signals from sub-solar mass binary neutron star systems by the current generation of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We find that finite size effects from large tidal deformabilities of the neutron stars and lower merger frequencies can significantly impact the sensitivity of the detectors to these sources. By simulating a matched-filter based search using injected binary neutron star signals with tidal deformabilities derived from physically motivated equations of state, we calculate the reduction in sensitivity of the detectors. We conclude that the loss in sensitive volume can be as high as $78.4 \%$ for an equal mass binary system of chirp mass $0.17 \, \textrm{M}_{\odot}$, in a search conducted using binary black hole template banks. We use this loss in sensitive volume, in combination with the results from the search for sub-solar mass binaries conducted on data collected by the LIGO-Virgo observatories during their first three observing runs, to obtain a conservative upper limit on the merger rate of sub-solar mass binary neutron stars. Gravitational-wave observations of neutron star mergers can probe the nuclear equation of state by measuring the imprint of the neutron star's tidal deformability on the signal. We investigate the ability of future gravitational-wave observations to produce a precise measurement of the equation of state from binary neutron star inspirals. Since measurability of the tidal effect depends on the equation of state, we explore several equations of state that span current observational constraints. We generate a population of binary neutron stars as seen by a simulated Advanced LIGO-Virgo network, as well as by a planned Cosmic Explorer observatory. We perform Bayesian inference to measure the parameters of each signal, and we combine measurements across each population to determine $R_{1.4}$, the radius of a $1.4M_{\odot}$ neutron star. We find that with 321 signals the LIGO-Virgo network is able to measure $R_{1.4}$ to better than 2% precision for all equations of state we consider, however we find that achieving this precision could take decades of observation, depending on the equation of state and the merger rate. On the other hand we find that with one year of observation, Cosmic Explorer will measure $R_{1.4}$ to better than 0.6% precision. In both cases we find that systematic biases, such as from an incorrect mass prior, can significantly impact measurement accuracy and efforts will be required to mitigate these effects., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

This paper presents an interdisciplinary effort aiming to develop and share sustainable knowledge necessary to analyze, understand, and use published scientific results to advance reproducibility in multi-messenger astrophysics. Specifically, we target the breakthrough work associated with the generation of the first image of a black hole, called M87. The image was computed by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. Based on the artifacts made available by EHT, we deliver documentation, code, and a computational environment to reproduce the first image of a black hole. Our deliverables support new discovery in multi-messenger astrophysics by providing all the necessary tools for generalizing methods and findings from the EHT use case. Challenges encountered during the reproducibility of EHT results are reported. The result of our effort is an open-source, containerized software package that enables the public to reproduce the first image of a black hole in the galaxy M87.

The last decade has brought about a profound transformation in multimessenger science. Ten years ago, facilities had been built or were under construction that would eventually discover the nature of objects in our universe could be detected through multiple messengers. Nonetheless, multimessenger science was hardly more than a dream. The rewards for our foresight were finally realized through IceCube's discovery of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, the first observation of gravitational waves by LIGO, and the first joint detections in gravitational waves and photons and in neutrinos and photons. Today we live in the dawn of the multimessenger era. The successes of the multimessenger campaigns of the last decade have pushed multimessenger science to the forefront of priority science areas in both the particle physics and the astrophysics communities. Multimessenger science provides new methods of testing fundamental theories about the nature of matter and energy, particularly in conditions that are not reproducible on Earth. The next generation of gravitational-wave observatories can explore a wide range of fundamental physics phenomena throughout the history of the universe. These phenomena include access to the universe's binary black hole population throughout cosmic time, to the universe's expansion history independent of the cosmic distance ladders, to stochastic gravitational-waves from early-universe phase transitions, to warped space-time in the strong-field and high-velocity limit, to the equation of state of nuclear matter at neutron star and post-merger densities, and to dark matter candidates through their interaction in extreme astrophysical environments or their interaction with the detector itself. We present the gravitational-wave detector concepts than can drive the future of gravitational-wave astrophysics. We present an overview of future observational facilities that will significantly enhance our understanding of the fundamental nature of dark matter. These facilities span a range of observational techniques including optical/near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, measurements of the cosmic microwave background, pulsar timing, 21-cm observations of neutral hydrogen at high redshift, and the measurement of gravitational waves. The workshop Dawn VI: Next Generation Observatories took place online over three days, 5-7 October, 2021. More than 200 physicists and astronomers attended to contribute to, and learn from, a discussion of next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. The program was centered on the next generation of ground-based gravitational-wave observatories and their synergy with the greater landscape of scientific observatories of the 2030s. Cosmic Explorer (CE), a concept developed with US National Science Foundation support, was a particular focus; Einstein Telescope (ET), the European next generation concept, is an important complement and partner in forming a network. The concluding summary of the meeting expressed the sentiment that the observational science accessible to CE and ET, also in combination with data from other non-GW observatories, will stimulate a very broad community of analysts and yield insights which are exciting given the access to GWs from the entire universe. The need, and desire, for closer collaboration between ET and CE was expressed; a three-detector network is optimal for delivering much of the science. The science opportunities afforded by CE and ET are broad and compelling, impacting a wide range of disciplines in physics and high energy astrophysics. There was a consensus that CE is a concept that can deliver the promised science. This Horizon Study describes a next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave observatory: Cosmic Explorer. With ten times the sensitivity of Advanced LIGO, Cosmic Explorer will push gravitational-wave astronomy towards the edge of the observable universe ($z \sim 100$). The goals of this Horizon Study are to describe and evaluate design concepts for Cosmic Explorer; to plan for the United States' leadership in gravitational-wave astronomy; and to envisage the role of Cosmic Explorer in the international effort to build a "Third-Generation" (3G) observatory network that will make discoveries transformative across astronomy, physics, and cosmology., Comment: 173 pages

We determine the ability of Cosmic Explorer, a proposed third-generation gravitational-wave observatory, to detect eccentric binary neutron stars and to measure their eccentricity. We find that for a matched-filter search, template banks constructed using binaries in quasi-circular orbits are effectual for eccentric neutron star binaries with $e_{7} \leq 0.004$ ($e_{7} \leq 0.003$) for CE1 (CE2), where $e_7$ is the binary's eccentricity at a gravitational-wave frequency of 7~Hz. We show that stochastic template placement can be used to construct a matched-filter search for binaries with larger eccentricities and construct an effectual template bank for binaries with $e_{7} \leq 0.05$. We show that the computational cost of both the search for binaries in quasi-circular orbits and eccentric orbits is not significantly larger for Cosmic Explorer than for Advanced LIGO and is accessible with present-day computational resources. We investigate Cosmic Explorer's ability to distinguish between circular and eccentric binaries. In 2016, LIGO and Virgo announced the first observation of gravitational waves from a binary black hole merger, known as GW150914. To establish the confidence of this detection, large-scale scientific workflows were used to measure the event's statistical significance. They used code written by the LIGO/Virgo and were executed on the LIGO Data Grid. The codes are publicly available, but there has not yet been an attempt to directly reproduce the results, although several analyses have replicated the analysis, confirming the detection. We attempt to reproduce the result presented in the GW150914 discovery paper using publicly available code on the Open Science Grid. We show that we can reproduce the main result but we cannot exactly reproduce the LIGO analysis as the original data set used is not public. Galactic core-collapse supernovae are among the possible sources of gravitational waves. We investigate the ability of gravitational-wave observatories to extract the properties of the collapsing progenitor from the gravitational waves radiated. We use simulations of supernovae that explore a variety of progenitor core rotation rates and nuclear equations of state and examine the ability of current and future observatories to determine these properties using gravitational-wave parameter estimation. We use principal component analysis of the simulation catalog to determine the dominant features of the waveforms and create a map between the measured properties of the waveform and the physical properties of the progenitor. We use Bayesian parameter inference and the parameter map to calculate posterior probabilities for the physical properties given a gravitational-wave observation. We estimate the ratio of the progenitor's core rotational kinetic energy to potential energy ($\beta$) and the post bounce oscillation frequency. For a supernovae at the distance of the galactic center (8.1 kpc) with $\beta = 0.02$ our method can estimate $\beta$ with a $90\%$ credible interval of $0.004$ for Advanced LIGO, improving to $0.0008$ for Cosmic Explorer. We demonstrate that if the core is rotating sufficiently rapidly for a signal observed by Cosmic Explorer, our method can also extract the post bounce oscillation frequency of the protoneutron star to a precision of within $5$~Hz ($90\%$ credible interval) allowing us to constrain the nuclear equation of state. For a supernovae at the distance of the Magellanic Clouds (48.5 kpc) Cosmic Explorer's ability to measure these parameters decreases slightly to $0.003$ for rotation and $11$~Hz for the postbounce oscillation frequency ($90\%$ credible interval). Significant human and observational resources have been dedicated to electromagnetic followup of gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. As the sensitivity of LIGO and Virgo improves, the rate of sources detected will increase. Margalit & Metzger (2019; arXiv:1904.11995) have suggested that it may be necessary to prioritize observations of future events. Optimal prioritization requires a rapid measurement of a gravitational-wave event's masses and spins, as these can determine the nature of any electromagnetic emission. We extend the relative binning method of Zackay et al. (2018; arXiv:1806.08792) to a coherent detector-network statistic. We show that the method can be seeded from the output of a matched-filter search and used in a Bayesian parameter measurement framework to produce marginalized posterior probability densities for the source's parameters within 20 minutes of detection on 32 CPU cores. We demonstrate that this algorithm produces unbiased estimates of the parameters with the same accuracy as running parameter estimation using the standard gravitational-wave likelihood. We encourage the adoption of this method in future LIGO-Virgo observing runs to allow fast dissemination of the parameters of detected events so that the observing community can make best use of its resources., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The Data Quality Segment Database (DQSEGDB) software is a database service, backend API, frontend graphical web interface, and client package used by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), Virgo, GEO600 and the Kamioka Gravitational wave detector for storing and accessing metadata describing the status of their detectors. The DQSEGDB has been used in the analysis of all published detections of gravitational waves in the advanced detector era. Two binary neutron star mergers, GW170817 and GW190425, have been detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo. These signals were detected by matched-filter searches that assume the star's orbit has circularized by the time their gravitational-wave emission is observable. This suggests that their eccentricity is low, but full parameter estimation of their eccentricity has not yet been performed. We use gravitational-wave observations to measure the eccentricity of GW170817 and GW190425. We find that the eccentricity at a gravitational-wave frequency of 10 Hz is $e \leq 0.024$ and $e \leq 0.048$ for GW170817 and GW190425, respectively (90% confidence). This is consistent with the binaries being formed in the field, as such systems are expected to have circularized to $e \leq 10^{-4}$ by the time they reach the LIGO-Virgo band. Our constraint is a factor of two smaller that an estimate based on GW170817 being detected by searches that neglect eccentricity. However, we caution that we find significant prior dependence in our limits, suggesting that there is limited information in the signals. We present a search for gravitational waves from merging binary neutron stars which have non-negligible eccentricity as they enter the LIGO observing band. We use the public Advanced LIGO data which covers the period from 2015 through 2017 and contains $\sim164$ days of LIGO-Hanford and LIGO-Livingston coincident observing time. The search was conducted using matched-filtering using the PyCBC toolkit. We find no significant binary neutron star candidates beyond GW170817, which has previously been reported by searches for binaries in circular orbits. We place a 90% upper limit of $\sim1700$ mergers $\textrm{Gpc}^{-3} \textrm{Yr}^{-1}$ for eccentricities $\lesssim 0.43$ at a dominant-mode gravitational-wave frequency of 10 Hz. The absence of a detection with these data is consistent with theoretical predictions of eccentric binary neutron star merger rates. Using our measured rate we estimate the sensitive volume of future gravitational-wave detectors and compare this to theoretical rate predictions. The ringdown is the late part of the post-merger signature emitted during the coalescence of two black holes and comprises of a superposition of quasi-normal-modes. Within general relativity, because of the no-hair theorems, the frequencies and damping times of these modes are entirely determined by the mass and angular momentum of the final Kerr black hole. A detection of multiple ringdown modes would potentially allow us to test the no-hair theorem from observational data. The parameters which determine whether sub-dominant ringdown modes can be detected are primarily the overall signal-to-noise ratio present in the ringdown signal, and on the amplitude of the subdominant mode with respect to the dominant mode. In this paper, we use Bayesian inference to determine the detectability of a subdominant mode in a set of simulated analytical ringdown signals. Focusing on the design sensitivity of the Advanced LIGO detectors, we systematically vary the signal-to-noise ratio of the ringdown signal, and the mode amplitude ratio in order to determine what kind of signals are promising for performing black hole spectroscopy., Comment: 7 figures, 2 tables

The properties of neutron stars are determined by the nature of the matter that they contain. These properties can be constrained by measurements of the star's size. We obtain stringent constraints on neutron-star radii by combining multimessenger observations of the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 with nuclear theory that best accounts for density-dependent uncertainties in the equation of state. We construct equations of state constrained by chiral effective field theory and marginalize over these using the gravitational-wave observations. Combining this with the electromagnetic observations of the merger remnant that imply the presence of a short-lived hyper-massive neutron star, we find that the radius of a $1.4\,\rm{M}_\odot$ neutron star is $R_{1.4\,\mathrm{M}_\odot} = 11.0^{+0.9}_{-0.6}~{\rm km}$ (90% credible interval). Using this constraint, we show that neutron stars are unlikely to be disrupted in neutron-star black-hole mergers; subsequently, such events will not produce observable electromagnetic emission., Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures

We optimize the third-generation gravitational-wave detector to maximize the range to detect core-collapse supernovae. Based on three-dimensional simulations for core-collapse and the corresponding gravitational-wave waveform emitted, the corresponding detection range for these waveforms is limited to within our galaxy even in the era of third-generation detectors. The corresponding event rate is two per century. We find from the waveforms that to detect core-collapse supernovae with an event rate of one per year, the gravitational-wave detectors need a strain sensitivity of 3$\times10^{-27}~$Hz$^{-1/2}$ in a frequency range from 100~Hz to 1500~Hz. We also explore detector configurations technologically beyond the scope of third-generation detectors. We find with these improvements, the event rate for gravitational-wave observations from CCSN is still low, but is improved to one in twenty years.

The management of security credentials (e.g., passwords, secret keys) for computational science workflows is a burden for scientists and information security officers. Problems with credentials (e.g., expiration, privilege mismatch) cause workflows to fail to fetch needed input data or store valuable scientific results, distracting scientists from their research by requiring them to diagnose the problems, re-run their computations, and wait longer for their results. SciTokens introduces a capabilities-based authorization infrastructure for distributed scientific computing, to help scientists manage their security credentials more reliably and securely. SciTokens uses IETF-standard OAuth JSON Web Tokens for capability-based secure access to remote scientific data. These access tokens convey the specific authorizations needed by the workflows, rather than general-purpose authentication impersonation credentials, to address the risks of scientific workflows running on distributed infrastructure including NSF resources (e.g., LIGO Data Grid, Open Science Grid, XSEDE) and public clouds (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure). By improving the interoperability and security of scientific workflows, SciTokens 1) enables use of distributed computing for scientific domains that require greater data protection and 2) enables use of more widely distributed computing resources by reducing the risk of credential abuse on remote systems. Science reproducibility is a cornerstone feature in scientific workflows. In most cases, this has been implemented as a way to exactly reproduce the computational steps taken to reach the final results. While these steps are often completely described, including the input parameters, datasets, and codes, the environment in which these steps are executed is only described at a higher level with endpoints and operating system name and versions. Though this may be sufficient for reproducibility in the short term, systems evolve and are replaced over time, breaking the underlying workflow reproducibility. A natural solution to this problem is containers, as they are well defined, have a lifetime independent of the underlying system, and can be user-controlled so that they can provide custom environments if needed. This paper highlights some unique challenges that may arise when using containers in distributed scientific workflows. The PRIMAD model with its six components (i.e., Platform, Research Objective, Implementation, Methods, Actors, and Data), provides an abstract taxonomy to represent computational experiments and enforce reproducibility by design. In this paper, we assess the model applicability to a set of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) workflows from literature sources (i.e., published papers). Our work outlines potentials and limits of the model in terms of its abstraction levels and application process.

This paper presents a parameter estimation analysis of the seven binary black hole mergers---GW170104, GW170608, GW170729, GW170809, GW170814, GW170818, and GW170823---detected during the second observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Virgo observatories using the gravitational-wave open data. We describe the methodology for parameter estimation of compact binaries using gravitational-wave data, and we present the posterior distributions of the inferred astrophysical parameters. We use the Pearson cross-correlation statistic proposed by Liu and Jackson, and employed by Creswell et al., to look for statistically significant correlations between the LIGO Hanford and Livingston detectors at the time of the binary black hole merger GW150914. We compute this statistic for the calibrated strain data released by LIGO, using both the residuals provided by LIGO and using our own subtraction of a maximum-likelihood waveform that is constructed to model binary black hole mergers in general relativity. To assign a significance to the values obtained, we calculate the cross-correlation of both simulated Gaussian noise and data from the LIGO detectors at times during which no detection of gravitational waves has been claimed. We find that after subtracting the maximum likelihood waveform there are no statistically significant correlations between the residuals of the two detectors at the time of GW150914., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. We present the first Open Gravitational-wave Catalog (1-OGC), obtained by using the public data from Advanced LIGO's first observing run to search for compact-object binary mergers. Our analysis is based on new methods that improve the separation between signals and noise in matched-filter searches for gravitational waves from the merger of compact objects. The three most significant signals in our catalog correspond to the binary black hole mergers GW150914, GW151226, and LVT151012. We assume a common population of binary black holes for these three signals by defining a region of parameter space that is consistent with these events. Under this assumption, we find that LVT151012 has a 97.6\% probability of being astrophysical in origin. No other significant binary black hole candidates are found, nor did we observe any significant binary neutron star or neutron star--black hole candidates. It has been suggested by Weinberg et al. (2013) that an instability due to the nonlinear coupling of a neutron star's tide to its $p$- and $g$-modes could affect the gravitational-wave phase evolution of a neutron-star binary. Weinberg (2016) suggests that this instability can turn on as the gravitational-waves pass through the sensitive band of ground-based detectors, although the size of the effect is not known. The discovery of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 provides an opportunity to look for evidence of nonlinear tides from $p$-$g$ mode coupling. We compute Bayesian evidences that compare waveform models that include the $p$-$g$ mode coupling to models that do not. Using the waveform model and priors of Essick et al. (2016) we find that the observation of GW170817 is consistent with $p$-$g$ mode coupling, in agreement with Abbott, B. P., et al. (2019a). We investigate the properties of the model and find that this consistency is due to degeneracy in a large region of the parameter space between the the model that includes nonlinear tides from $p$-$g$ mode coupling and the standard post-Newtonian model that does not. We investigate the consistency of the GW170817 signal with regions of the parameter space where the effect of nonlinear tides is not degenerate with the standard model. Regions of the nonlinear tide parameter space that have a fitting factor of less than 99$\%$ (98.5$\%$) are disfavored by a Bayes factor of 15 (25). We conclude that the consistency of the GW170817 signal with the model of Essick et al. We introduce new modules in the open-source PyCBC gravitational- wave astronomy toolkit that implement Bayesian inference for compact-object binary mergers. We review the Bayesian inference methods implemented and describe the structure of the modules. We demonstrate that the PyCBC Inference modules produce unbiased estimates of the parameters of a simulated population of binary black hole mergers. We show that the posterior parameter distributions obtained used our new code agree well with the published estimates for binary black holes in the first LIGO-Virgo observing run.

The management of security credentials (e.g., passwords, secret keys) for computational science workflows is a burden for scientists and information security officers. Problems with credentials (e.g., expiration, privilege mismatch) cause workflows to fail to fetch needed input data or store valuable scientific results, distracting scientists from their research by requiring them to diagnose the problems, re-run their computations, and wait longer for their results. In this paper, we introduce SciTokens, open source software to help scientists manage their security credentials more reliably and securely. We describe the SciTokens system architecture, design, and implementation addressing use cases from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) Scientific Collaboration and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) projects. We also present our integration with widely-used software that supports distributed scientific computing, including HTCondor, CVMFS, and XrootD. SciTokens uses IETF-standard OAuth tokens for capability-based secure access to remote scientific data. The access tokens convey the specific authorizations needed by the workflows, rather than general-purpose authentication impersonation credentials, to address the risks of scientific workflows running on distributed infrastructure including NSF resources (e.g., LIGO Data Grid, Open Science Grid, XSEDE) and public clouds (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure). We use gravitational-wave observations of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 to explore the tidal deformabilities and radii of neutron stars. We perform Bayesian parameter estimation with the source location and distance informed by electromagnetic observations. We also assume that the two stars have the same equation of state; we demonstrate that for stars with masses comparable to the component masses of GW170817, this is effectively implemented by assuming that the stars' dimensionless tidal deformabilities are determined by the binary's mass ratio $q$ by $\Lambda_1/\Lambda_2 = q^6$. We investigate different choices of prior on the component masses of the neutron stars. We find that the tidal deformability and 90$\%$ credible interval is $\tilde{\Lambda}=222^{+420}_{-138}$ for a uniform component mass prior, $\tilde{\Lambda}=245^{+453}_{-151}$ for a component mass prior informed by radio observations of Galactic double neutron stars, and $\tilde{\Lambda}=233^{+448}_{-144}$ for a component mass prior informed by radio pulsars. We find a robust measurement of the common areal radius of the neutron stars across all mass priors of $8.9 \le \hat{R} \le 13.2$ km, with a mean value of $\langle \hat{R} \rangle = 10.8$ km. The joint detection of gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 ushered in a new era of multi-messenger astronomy. Joint GW-EM observations can be used to measure the parameters of the binary with better precision than either observation alone. Here, we use joint GW-EM observations to measure the viewing angle of GW170817, the angle between the binary's angular momentum and the line of sight. We combine a direct measurement of the distance to the host galaxy of GW170817 (NGC 4993) of $40.7\pm 2.36$ Mpc with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo GW data and find that the viewing angle is $32^{+10}_{-13}\,\pm 1.7$ degrees (90% confidence, statistical, and systematic errors). We place a conservative lower limit on the viewing angle of $\ge 13^\circ$, which is robust to the choice of prior. This measurement provides a constraint on models of the prompt $\gamma$-ray and radio/X-ray afterglow emission associated with the merger; for example, it is consistent with the off-axis viewing angle inferred for a structured jet model. The final stage of a binary black hole merger is ringdown, in which the system is described by a Kerr black hole with quasinormal mode perturbations. It is far from straightforward to identify the time at which the ringdown begins. Yet determining this time is important for precision tests of the general theory of relativity that compare an observed signal with quasinormal mode descriptions of the ringdown, such as tests of the no-hair theorem. We present an algorithmic method to analyze the choice of ringdown start time in the observed waveform. This method is based on determining how close the strong field is to a Kerr black hole (Kerrness). Using numerical relativity simulations, we characterize the Kerrness of the strong-field region close to the black hole using a set of local, gauge-invariant geometric and algebraic conditions that measure local isometry to Kerr. We produce a map that associates each time in the gravitational waveform with a value of each of these Kerrness measures; this map is produced by following outgoing null characteristics from the strong and near-field regions to the wave zone. We perform this analysis on a numerical relativity simulation with parameters consistent with GW150914- the first gravitational wave detection. We find that the choice of ringdown start time of $3\,\mathrm{ms}$ after merger used in the GW150914 study to test general relativity corresponds to a high dimensionless perturbation amplitude of $ \sim 7.5 \times 10^{-3}$ in the strong-field region. This suggests that in higher signal-to-noise detections, one would need to start analyzing the signal at a later time for studies that depend on the validity of black hole perturbation theory., Comment: 23+4 pages, 22 figures

Advanced LIGO's raw detector output needs to be calibrated to compute dimensionless strain h(t). Calibrated strain data is produced in the time domain using both a low-latency, online procedure and a high-latency, offline procedure. The low-latency h(t) data stream is produced in two stages, the first of which is performed on the same computers that operate the detector's feedback control system. This stage, referred to as the front-end calibration, uses infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering and performs all operations at a 16384 Hz digital sampling rate. Due to several limitations, this procedure currently introduces certain systematic errors in the calibrated strain data, motivating the second stage of the low-latency procedure, known as the low-latency gstlal calibration pipeline. The gstlal calibration pipeline uses finite impulse response (FIR) filtering to apply corrections to the output of the front-end calibration. It applies time-dependent correction factors to the sensing and actuation components of the calibrated strain to reduce systematic errors. The gstlal calibration pipeline is also used in high latency to recalibrate the data, which is necessary due mainly to online dropouts in the calibrated data and identified improvements to the calibration models or filters., Comment: 20 pages including appendices and bibliography. 11 Figures. 3 Tables
