Abstract: PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

2. Impact of an Intensive Multi-Disciplinary STEM Enrichment Program on Underrepresented Minority Student Success

Abstract: Purpose: This study examines the impact of participation in a STEM Enrichment Summer Bridge Program, funded by the NSF Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, on undergraduate student success outcomes, particularly for under-represented students. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses propensity score matching and logistic regression analysis to examine the effects of participation in the STEM enrichment program on graduation and retention in STEM after matching on baseline socio-demographic and pre-college characteristics. Findings: The analysis found that program participation had a significant effect on increasing both the graduation rates and retention of under-represented minority students in STEM fields. In addition, results indicated that program participation had a particularly strong impact for Pell-eligible students in terms of course grades. Research limitations/implications: Data obtained for this study were limited to a single Hispanic-serving/Asian-serving institution, and therefore are not necessarily representative of the graduation and retention trends of the larger population of underrepresented minority (URM) students across the nation. Originality/value: This study uniquely adds to the existing body of literature surrounding the retention of URM students in STEM fields by accounting for baseline variables, such as pre-college academic achievement and socio-demographic characteristics, that could lead to bias in estimating results. Specifically, this study addresses limitations of previous studies by comparing participants and non-participants of the STEM enrichment program who are matched on a selection of baseline characteristics.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to investigate the sustainability and job satisfaction of veteran music teachers. The study was designed to provide descriptive information that might inform music teacher educators, new music teachers, and administrators about teacher retention in the music education field. Specific research questions included the following. 1. What characteristics of school culture serve as the best predictor for job satisfaction in veteran music teachers in North Carolina? 2. What coping strategies contribute to the prevention of burnout among veteran music teachers in North Carolina? North Carolina music teachers who had over fifteen years of experience (N = 176) were administered an online survey. Using Qualtrics®, the veteran music teachers answered questions associated with the characteristics of school culture (e.g., career/working conditions, administrative support, student quality, and staff collegiality)and coping strategies that prevent music teacher burnout. Administrative support (p =.01) and student quality (p < .001) were found to be statistically significant predictors of job satisfaction in veteran music teachers (p < .05). Coping strategies that contributed to the prevention of burnout as stated by veteran music teachers included trying new strategies and materials in the classroom, healthy living, self-care, maintaining interests outside of music and teaching, and maintaining a work and life balance. As secondary variables of the study, data were examined to determine if gender and primary teaching level affected North Carolina veteran music teachers' job satisfaction. Male middle school music teachers had the lowest self-reported job satisfaction levels; whereas, male elementary school music teachers had the highest self reported levels of job satisfaction. No significant differences between female veteran music teachers' job satisfaction were found at any teaching level (p > .05). Veteran music teachers felt respected at work when they received administrative support, verbal or written appreciation, and parental, staff, and student support and recognition. Administrative support included being involved in decision making, demonstrating trust in teachers, and providing autonomy in the music classroom. Veteran music teacher advice to administrators about music teacher job satisfaction included supporting and valuing teachers, valuing music as a part of the curriculum, and saying thank you to teachers. The majority of subjects (80%) were satisfied with their jobs as music teachers and 80% of veteran music teachers intended to continue teaching until retirement. The majority of subjects found working with students the most enjoyable aspect of their job (92%).

23. The Influence of Lean on K-12 District Management: A Case Study

Abstract: For decades, policymakers and educators have focused on public school equity and adequacy, while paying little attention to efficiency. This qualitative single case study was designed to capture explicit information about Lean management, operations, and culture in a K-12 Michigan school district engaged in Lean training and implementation for a period of three years. Lean is a multidisciplinary management system rooted in manufacturing that claims to reduce expenses and build efficiencies by improving process flow, waste reduction, and customer value as a means of achieving continuous improvement. Respect for people is also a defining characteristic of Lean. Utilizing a purposeful sample, the study applies an emergent theme design to analyze the extent to which Lean efficacy occurred. District administrators and central office workers engaged in interviews and more than 80 hours of observation. A review of district artifacts corroborated verbal and visual data, and any emerging themes, in order to promote validity. The research adds to the body of knowledge regarding public school management by offering alternative means of using limited resources, especially during times of economic challenge. Abstract: Background: The American Diabetic Association recommends that patients with diabetes have routine diabetic foot examinations to prevent diabetic foot conditions and amputations. The providers at the practice center were not performing routine diabetic foot examinations regularly. The providers were concerned with the increase in amputations and wanted to find a way to decrease amputations. Therefore, the 3-minute diabetic foot examination was chosen because of its brevity and ease of use. Purpose: To determine whether implementing the 3-minute diabetic foot examination and risk stratification tool decreases the number of diabetic foot complications leading to amputations. Methods: Providers received education on how to perform the 3-minute diabetic foot exam. The examination had three parts that each took one minute to complete: 1) patient’s history of foot complications and foot symptoms; 2) foot exam; and 3) patient education on how to manage daily foot care. Results: Using the 3-minute diabetic foot examination and risk stratification tool allowed us to make faster referrals to specialists. Implementation of the 3-minute foot examination reduced amputations. No amputations occurred within the six months of follow-up during post-implementation. Conclusion: Using the 3-minute foot examination and risk stratification tool was effective in decreasing foot amputations. We recommend that the practice center continue to examine diabetic feet using the 3-minute diabetic foot examination and risk stratification tool to prevent amputations in diabetic patients.
