8. The impact and experience of female police officers in peacekeeping missions: A qualitative exploration.

Abstract

This paper explores the differences in experiences between female and male police officers deployed in United Nations peacekeeping missions. In the last decade, the United Nations Police (UNPOL) have pushed to increase the percentage of female officers deployed to peacekeeping missions. These UNPOL officers are at the forefront of post-conflict police reform. Police reforms can have a serious impact on how females are treated in UNPOL and in the host nation. UNPOL officers face various challenges, including difficulties transitioning into a multicultural environment and the physical dangers they must circumvent in a peacekeeping mission. The differences between male and female officers are discussed to provide insight into the impact of the missions and the policy implications to improve the effectiveness and efficacy of the missions. Abstract

Minimal attention has been given to United Nations Police (UNPOL) officers and how all phases of their deployments affect them. The purposes of the study are 1) to discuss how UNPOL officers��� experiences in a peacekeeping mission impact their lives, personally and professionally, through the process of pre-deployment to post-deployment, 2) to discuss how personal characteristics relate to these experiences, and 3) to begin to address gaps in current research of UNPOL officers deployment experiences. The qualitative study involved interviews of 61 UNPOL officers. Thematic analysis was used to analyze how pre-deployment, deployment, and post-deployment periods affect a diverse set of officers from a wide range of developed, developing, and least developed nations in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America.

Abstract

To determine a) whether clinical response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is associated with decreased platelet activation in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and b) if any medical/demographic characteristics predict response to ECT or changes in platelet activation. Increased platelet activation may underlie the increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with MDD.
