In: Normbegrip en incidenten: een verkenning van het klantperspectief. BTO 2022.005. De afgelopen jaren hebben verschillende BTO studies laten zien dat het vertrouwen in Nederlands kraanwater gemiddeld gezien hoog is.

Dit artikel presenteert de resultaten van twee studies die aantonen dat zowel de algemene perceptie als de gebruikservaringen van bewoners met vacuümtoiletten als waterbesparend alternatief overwegend positief zijn.

De populariteit van producten voor kraanwaternabehandeling en de opvang en toepassing van regenwater lijkt in zowel Nederland als Vlaanderen te groeien. Dit was aanleiding voor diepgaand onderzoek naar achterliggende klantmotivaties. De bevindingen tonen aan dat klanten blijven investeren in bijvoorbeeld thuisfilters, hoewel drinkwaterbedrijven herhaaldelijk benadrukken dat het gebruik hiervan overbodig is. Daarnaast wint regenwatergebruik aan populariteit, vooral gedreven door de wens om water te besparen, de factuur te verlagen en Vlaamse wet- en regelgeving. Deze verschuivingen benadrukken wederom het belang voor de drinkwatersector om te blijven investeren in een goed begrip van de complexe wereld van de mens achter de watermeter.

In 2015 zijn vier klantperspectieven van drinkwaterklanten geïdentificeerd. Het lopende onderzoeksproject ‘Klantperspectieven 2.0’ onderzoekt hoe de omvang van deze perspectieven verandert in de tijd. Een analyse toont dat de groepen, opvallend genoeg, ongeveer even groot zijn gebleven.

Een studie naar de waardebeleving en prijspercepties van kraanwater laat zien dat huishoudelijke klanten water associëren met een breed scala aan zowel particuliere als maatschappelijke waarden. De studie geeft inzicht in het verband tussen deze waarden van water en de prijsperceptie van kraanwater.

Even in the setting of optimal resuscitation in high-income countries severe sepsis and septic shock have a mortality of 20–40%, with antibiotic resistance dramatically increasing this mortality risk. To develop a reference dataset enabling the identification of common bacterial targets for therapeutic intervention, we applied a standardized genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic technological framework to multiple clinical isolates of four sepsis-causing pathogens: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae species complex, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Exposure to human serum generated a sepsis molecular signature containing global increases in fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis and metabolism, consistent with cell envelope remodelling and nutrient adaptation for osmoprotection. In addition, acquisition of cholesterol was identified across the bacterial species. This detailed reference dataset has been established as an open resource to support discovery and translational research.

In een eerste verkenning naar drinkwaterbesparing uitgevoerd door Berenschot en Arcadis (2022) blijkt dat de inzet van een breed instrumentarium nodig is om de beleidsambities te halen. Daarnaast wordt ook gesteld dat een groot deel van het waterbesparingspotentieel ligt bij huishoudens. Daarin wordt gesteld dat een combinatie met energiebesparing mogelijk kansrijk is en dat slimme watermeters een belangrijk middel zijn om drinkwaterbesparing te realiseren. Het Berenschot en Arcadis rapport is echter onvoldoende specifiek over de inschatting van het waterbesparingspotentieel van verschillende maatregelen en hoe die passen binnen het tijdspad van nu tot 2035. Daarom heeft dit BTO-onderzoek als doelstelling om de effectiviteit en haalbaarheid van de belangrijkste drinkwaterbesparingsmaatregelen te schetsen in de context van de beleidsambitie van 100 LPPPD in 2035. Deze maatregelen zijn vervolgens gegroepeerd in vier scenario’s waardoor inzicht verworven wordt in hoe fundamentele beleidskeuzes het wel of niet halen van deze beleidsambitie beïnvloeden. Daarmee geeft dit rapport een zo goed mogelijk onderbouwde en genuanceerde inschatting van mogelijke drinkwaterbesparing, welke maatregelen daarin effectief kunnen zijn en wat de kernoverwegingen zijn. Deze kennis en inzichten zijn ook relevant voor de afweging hoe de waterbeschikbaarheid voor mens en natuur in Nederland gewaarborgd kan worden in de nabije toekomst.

A new variant of Streptococcus pyogenes serotype M1 (designated 'M1UK') has been reported in the United Kingdom, linked with seasonal scarlet fever surges, marked increase in invasive infections, and exhibiting enhanced expression of the superantigen SpeA. The progenitor S. pyogenes 'M1global' and M1UK clones can be differentiated by 27 SNPs and 4 indels, yet the mechanism for speA upregulation is unknown. Here we investigate the previously unappreciated expansion of M1UK in Australia, now isolated from the majority of serious infections caused by serotype M1 S. pyogenes. M1UK sub-lineages circulating in Australia also contain a novel toxin repertoire associated with epidemic scarlet fever causing S. pyogenes in Asia. A single SNP in the 5' transcriptional leader sequence of the transfer-messenger RNA gene ssrA drives enhanced SpeA superantigen expression as a result of ssrA terminator read-through in the M1UK lineage. This represents a previously unappreciated mechanism of toxin expression and urges enhanced international surveillance.

The importance of stakeholder engagement in asset management is widely accepted and emphasised. Nonetheless, in asset management practice, stakeholder engagement is still often applied in an unsystematised and ad hoc manner. By proposing a framework of considerations for the deliberate design of stakeholder engagement, this study aims to contribute to the realisation of integrated asset management by offering a means to explicate the often implicit considerations regarding stakeholder engagement. By providing a conceptual exploration, as well as an analysis of three asset management cases in the Netherlands, this article provides building blocks for deliberate stakeholder engagement, guided by consideration of the mission, local context, and available time. Taking the daily reality of asset managers as a reference, this study develops a synthesis between literature on stakeholder engagement and asset management, hereby showing that both material and relational considerations should be made deliberately in all phases of an asset management project.

Item does not contain fulltext, Background: The aims of this study were: (1) to explore the frequency of discrepancies in work accommodations reported by workers and their supervisors, and (2) to investigate whether these discrepancies are associated with full return to work (RTW). Methods: We used data from a longitudinal survey study of long-term sick-listed workers and their supervisors (n = 406). Discrepancies in reports on implementing eight types of work accommodations were explored. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to test associations between discrepancies in reported work accommodations and odds of full RTW 27 months after the sick-leave onset. Results: Discrepancies were the lowest for the work accommodation therapeutic RTW (53%) and the highest (85%) for job training or education and reimbursement of therapy or treatment. Four out of eight types of work accommodations were more often reported by workers than by their supervisors. Only a discrepancy on a job reassignment within the organization was associated with lower odds of full RTW (OR 0.56, 95%-CI 0.36-0.88). Conclusion: We found substantial discrepancies in the reported implementation of work accommodations between workers and their supervisors. Future research should focus on disentangling mechanisms that lead to discrepancies to avoid inefficiencies in the RTW process.

01 april 2023, Item does not contain fulltext, INTRODUCTION: Kidney failure negatively affects opportunities for work participation. Little is known about work functioning of employed CKD patients. This study investigates work-related outcomes, and examines associations between patient characteristics and employment status. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional survey study in nine nephrology outpatient clinics in the Netherlands among working age (18-67 years) CKD Stage G3b-G5, dialysis and transplant patients (n = 634; mean age 53.4 years (SD 10); 53% male; 47% Stage G3b-G5, 9% dialysis, 44% transplantation). We assessed employment status, work disability, work-related characteristics (i.e., work situation, working hours, job demands), work functioning (i.e., perceived ability to work, productivity loss, limitations in work), work environment (i.e., work accommodations, psychosocial work environment), as well as health status and fatigue. RESULTS: Sixty-five percent were employed reporting moderate work ability. Of those, 21% received supplementary work disability benefits, 37% were severely fatigued, 7% expected to drop out of the workforce, and 49% experienced CKD-related work limitations. Work accommodations included reduced working hours, working at a slower pace, adjustment of work tasks or work schedule, and working from home. Multivariable analysis of sustained employment showed associations with younger age, male gender, higher level of education, better general and physical health and pre-emptive transplantation. Transplant patients had the highest work ability and highest expectation to maintain work. Dialysis patients had the highest productivity loss and perceived the most limitations regarding functioning in work. Stage G3b-G5 patients reported the lowest social support from colleagues and highest conflict in work and private life. Toenemende waterschaarste en een groeiende drinkwatervraag vragen om maatregelen van waterbedrijven. Uitbreiding van productiecapaciteit en waterbesparingsmogelijkheden en waterbewustzijn bij huishoudelijke klanten krijgen steeds meer aandacht, maar het is voor de drinkwatersector ook steeds belangrijker bij te dragen aan de realisatie van een lager waterverbruik bij zakelijke grootverbruikers. Zij kunnen bijvoorbeeld de relatie met zakelijke grootverbruikers versterken om de urgentie van waterbesparing te benadrukken en hen te faciliteren bij het identificeren van waterbesparingsmogelijkheden. Ook kunnen waterbedrijven bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van beleid en regelgeving voor het verminderen van zakelijk grootverbruik, kennis delen over waterbesparing bij zakelijke grootverbruikers en gezamenlijk een duidelijke structuur ontwikkelen voor het aanbieden van industriewater om actief bij te dragen aan realisatie van de beleidsdoelstelling voor minder zakelijk grootverbruik van drinkwater, zoals vastgelegd in de kamerbrief Water Bodem Sturend.

Drinkwater maken uit gezuiverd rioolwater is technisch goed mogelijk. Internationaal is hier al decennia ervaring mee, onder meer in de Verenigde Staten, Namibië en Singapore. Ook voor Nederland is dit relevant vanwege de stijgende watervraag en dreigende tekorten, onder andere bij droogte. Samen met onderzoeksinstituut KWR heeft Vitens een oriënterend onderzoek gedaan naar de sociale acceptatie van hergebruik van gezuiverd afvalwater als bron voor drinkwater. Wanneer ervaren mensen waterhergebruik als veilig en acceptabel, en hoe kan een drinkwaterbedrijf hierop inspelen?

Publieke acceptatie en angst voor sociale weerstand vormen een belangrijke uitdaging bij de implementatie van waterhergebruik. De Universiteit van Antwerpen heeft in samenwerking met KWR onderzoek gedaan naar een succesverhaal van drinkwaterhergebruik door het waterbedrijf Aquaduin aan de Vlaamse kust.
