Abstract

Spherical proportional counters (SPCs) are gaseous particle detectors sensitive to single ionization electrons in their target media, with large detector volumes and low background rates. The $\mbox{NEWS-G}$ collaboration employs this technology to search for low-mass dark matter, having previously performed searches with detectors at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM), including a recent campaign with a 135 cm diameter SPC filled with methane. While in situ calibrations of the detector response were carried out at the LSM, measurements of the mean ionization yield and fluctuations of methane gas in SPCs were performed using a 30 cm diameter detector. The results of multiple measurements taken at different operating voltages are presented. A UV laser system was used to measure the mean gas gain of the SPC, along with $\mathrm{^{37}Ar}$ and aluminum-fluorescence calibration sources. Abstract

The neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) is a sensitive probe for currently undiscovered sources of charge-parity symmetry violation. As part of the TRIUMF Ultracold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration, we are developing spin analyzers for ultracold neutrons (UCNs) to be used for a next-generation experiment to measure the neutron EDM with unprecedented precision. Spin-state analysis of UCNs constitutes an essential part of the neutron EDM measurement sequence. Magnetized iron films used as spin filters of UCNs are crucial experimental components, whose performance directly influences the statistical sensitivity of the measurement. To test such iron film spin filters, we propose the use of polarized cold-neutron reflectometry, in addition to conventional UCN transmission experiments. The new method provides information on iron film samples complementary to the UCN tests and accelerates the development cycles. We developed a collaborative effort to produce iron film spin filters and test them with cold and ultracold neutrons available at JRR-3/MINE2 and J-PARC/MLF BL05. In this article, we review the methods of neutron EDM measurements, discuss the complementarity of this new approach to test UCN spin filters, provide an overview of our related activities, and present the first results of polarized cold-neutron reflectometry recently conducted at the MINE2 beamline.

Abstract

The NEWS-G direct detection experiment uses spherical proportional counters to search for light dark matter candidates. New results from a 10 day physics run with a $135\,\mathrm{cm}$ in diameter spherical proportional counter at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane are reported. The target consists of $114\,\mathrm{g}$ of methane, providing sensitivity to dark matter spin-dependent coupling to protons. New constraints are presented in the mass range $0.17$ to $1.2\,\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$, with a 90% confidence level cross-section upper limit of $30.9\,\mathrm{pb}$ for a mass of $0.76\,\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A method was developed for measuring photonuclear reactions concurrently at several discrete photon beam energies on a stack of different target materials via a single irradiation. Concentric ring targets of the materials (in order from front to back targets: Au, TiO$_2$, Zn, Os, and Au) were irradiated at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S). As a proof of principle, we report the result of the cross section measurements from the front Au target. The excitation functions of the $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,n)$^{196}$Au and $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,3n)$^{194}$Au reactions were determined in the incident photon energy range of 13-31 MeV using quasi-monoenergetic photon beams provided at HI$\gamma$S. The cross sections of the combined ground state (2$^{-}$) and short-lived first isomeric state (m1, 5$^{+}$), and of the second isomeric state (m2, 12$^{-}$) in the $^{196}$Au production are obtained separately by subtracting the $\gamma$ rays from the internal conversion of the second isomeric state. The excitation function of the second isomeric state via the photon-induced reaction $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,n)$^{196m2}$Au was measured for the first time. By using the activation method rather than direct neutron counting, the exclusive cross sections for the ($\gamma$,n) and ($\gamma$,3n) reactions were determined. Comparing the yields from the front and back gold targets validates our ability to simulate the effect of photon scattering in the target stack and provides a method for assessing the systematic uncertainty of our technique.

Abstract

Security is an important topic in our contemporary world, and the ability to automate the detection of any events of interest that can take place in a crowd is of great interest to a population. We hypothesize that the detection of events in videos is correlated with significant changes in pedestrian behaviors. In this paper, we examine three different scenarios of crowd behavior, containing both the cases where an event triggers a change in the behavior of the crowd and two video sequences where the crowd and its motion remain mostly unchanged. With both the videos and the tracking of the individual pedestrians (performed in a pre-processed phase), we use Geomind, a software we developed to extract significant data about the scene, in particular, the geometrical features, personalities, and emotions of each person. We then examine the output, seeking a significant change in the way each person acts as a function of the time, that could be used as a basis to identify events or to model realistic crowd actions. When applied to the games area, our method can use the detected events to find some sort of pattern to be then used in agent simulation. 10. Enhancing MR vascular Fingerprinting through realistic microvascular geometries

Abstract

MR vascular Fingerprinting proposes to use the MR Fingerprinting framework to quantitatively and simultaneously map several microvascular characteristics at a sub-voxel scale. The initial implementation assessed the local blood oxygenation saturation (SO 2), blood volume fraction (BVf) and vessel averaged radius (R) in humans and rodent brains using simple 2D representations of the vascular network during dictionary generation. In order to improve the results and possibly extend the approach to pathological environments and other biomarkers, we propose in this study to use 3D realistic vascular geometries in the numerical simulations. 28,000 different synthetic voxels containing vascular networks segmented from whole brain healthy mice microscopy images were created. A Bayesian-based regression model was used for map reconstruction. We show on 8 healthy and 9 tumor bearing rats that realistic vascular representations yield microvascular estimates in better agreement with the literature than 2D or 3D cylindrical models. Furthermore, tumoral blood oxygenation estimates obtained with the proposed approach are the only ones correlating with in vivo optic-fiber measurements performed in the same animals.

11. Increasing Women's Representation in School Leadership: A Promising Path towards Improving Learning

Abstract

Emerging evidence shows a positive association between women school leaders and student performance. Some studies suggest women school leaders are more likely than their male counterparts to adopt effective management practices that may contribute to improved outcomes. However, women remain largely underrepresented in school leadership positions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This brief presents emerging insights on the association between women school leaders and education outcomes and draws attention to women's underrepresentation in school leadership roles. It highlights the need for further research on gender and school leadership to identify policies and practices that can be implemented to increase women's representation and scale high-quality management practices adopted by women leaders to more schools to improve education outcomes for all children. [The development of this brief was a collaborative effort with the Gender at the Centre Initiative (GCI), led by International Institute for Educational Planning-UNESCO Dakar and the UN Girls' Education Initiative.]

Abstract

Two years into the COVID-19 global pandemic, education has been seriously disrupted. In response to this crisis, the global priority remains to ensure every child is supported so they can return to school and catch up on lost learning. Recognizing the need to accelerate education recovery with urgent, at-scale action, this joint report by UNICEF in partnership with UNESCO and the World Bank highlights staggering levels of learning loss globally and takes stock of the measures being taken by countries to mitigate learning losses as schools reopen. Based on a survey of 122 UNICEF country and fundraising offices administered in early March 2022, the report presents the importance of and progress made in five key actions for education recovery, the RAPID: (1) Reach every child and retain them in school; (2) Assess learning levels; (3) Prioritize teaching the fundamentals; (4) Increase catch-up learning and progress beyond what was lost; and (5) Develop psychosocial health and well-being so every child is ready to learn.

13. Alloprof: a new French question-answer education dataset and its use in an information retrieval case study

Abstract

Teachers and students are increasingly relying on online learning resources to supplement the ones provided in school. This increase in the breadth and depth of available resources is a great thing for students, but only provided they are able to find answers to their queries. Question-answering and information retrieval systems have benefited from public datasets to train and evaluate their algorithms, but most of these datasets have been in English text written by and for adults. We introduce a new public French question-answering dataset collected from Alloprof, a Quebec-based primary and high-school help website, containing 29 349 questions and their explanations in a variety of school subjects from 10 368 students, with more than half of the explanations containing links to other questions or some of the 2 596 reference pages on the website. We also present a case study of this dataset in an information retrieval task. This dataset was collected on the Alloprof public forum, with all questions verified for their appropriateness and the explanations verified both for their appropriateness and their relevance to the question. To predict relevant documents, architectures using pre-trained BERT models were fine-tuned and evaluated. This dataset will allow researchers to develop question-answering, information retrieval and other algorithms specifically for the French speaking education context. Furthermore, the range of language proficiency, images, mathematical symbols and spelling mistakes will necessitate algorithms based on a multimodal comprehension. The case study we present as a baseline shows an approach that relies on recent techniques provides an acceptable performance level, but more work is necessary before it can reliably be used and trusted in a production setting.

Abstract Introduction Emapalumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that targets free and receptor-bound interferon-gamma (IFNγ), neutralizing its biological activity. IFNγ levels differ by orders of magnitude between patients with primary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and macrophage activation syndrome (MAS; a form of secondary HLH) in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA). Therefore, this study aimed to develop a population pharmacokinetic model for emapalumab across a patient population with a wide range of total (free and emapalumab-bound) IFNγ levels using observations from patients with primary HLH or MAS in sJIA in clinical trials. Methods Pharmacokinetic data were pooled (n = 58; 2709 observations) from studies enrolling patients administered emapalumab for primary HLH or MAS in sJIA. Patients with primary HLH were administered emapalumab 1 mg/kg (potentially increasing to 3, 6, and up to 10 mg/kg based on clinical response) every 3 days. Patients with MAS in sJIA were administered emapalumab 6 mg/kg, followed by 3 mg/kg every 3 days until day 15 and twice weekly until day 28. An earlier population PK model was re-parameterized using this data. Results The final model for emapalumab comprised a 2-compartment model with first-order elimination. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have collaborated in the third round of the Survey on National Education Responses to COVID-19 School Closures, administered by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and OECD to Ministry of Education officials. The questions covered four levels of education: preprimary, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary. While the first two rounds of the survey were implemented during the periods May-June and July-October 2020, respectively, the third round was implemented during the period February-June 2021. In total, 143 countries responded to the questionnaire. Thirty-one countries submitted responses to the OECD ("OECD survey") and 112 countries responded to the UIS ("UIS survey"). Seven countries responded to both surveys. In these instances, the more complete set responses were used in analysis.

Abstract

Although Ferralsols result from a deep weathering, small amounts of potassium-bearing 2:1 phyllosilicates were identified their B horizons in many studies but the consequences on total potassium (K) content and K availability remain under discussion. Our objective was to discuss this issue by measuring the total amount of K, as well as the cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the amount of exchangeable K using chemical analyses of bulk samples, combined with backscattered electron scanning images (BESI) and chemical analyses using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) on cross-sections of undisturbed samples. Our results showed that the total and exchangeable K were related to the presence of elongated particles corresponding to 2:1 phyllosilicates at varying degrees of weathering. These 2:1 phyllosilicates ranged from weathered muscovite to hydroxy-Al interlayered vermiculites (HIV). The quantities of K reserve potentially available over time for plant nutrition ranged from 259 to 5 044 g ha−1 m−1. The stock of exchangeable K+ ranged from 86 to 207 kg ha−1 m−1 when it was higher than the detection limit (18 kg ha−1 m−1). It was related to the density of the elongated particles

Abstract

IMPORTANCE:. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) frequently occurs in patients with cardiac arrest. Diagnosis of VAP after cardiac arrest remains challenging, while the use of current biomarkers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) or procalcitonin (PCT) is debated. OBJECTIVES:. To evaluate biomarkers’ impact in helping VAP diagnosis after cardiac arrest. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:. This is a prospective ancillary study of the randomized, multicenter, double-blind placebo-controlled ANtibiotherapy during Therapeutic HypothermiA to pRevenT Infectious Complications (ANTHARTIC) trial evaluating the impact of antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent VAP in out-of-hospital patients with cardiac arrest secondary to shockable rhythm and treated with therapeutic hypothermia. An adjudication committee blindly evaluated VAP according to predefined clinical, radiologic, and microbiological criteria. All patients with available biomarker(s), sample(s), and consent approval were included. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES:. The main endpoint was to evaluate the ability of biomarkers to correctly diagnose and predict VAP within 48 hours after sampling. The secondary endpoint was to study the combination of two biomarkers in discriminating VAP. Blood samples were collected at baseline on day 3. Routine and exploratory panel of inflammatory biomarkers measurements were blindly performed. Analyses were adjusted on the randomization group. RESULTS:. Among 161 patients of the ANTHARTIC trial with available biological sample(s), patients with VAP (n = 33) had higher body mass index and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, more unwitnessed cardiac arrest, more catecholamines, and experienced more prolonged therapeutic hypothermia duration than patients without VAP (n = 121). In univariate analyses, biomarkers significantly associated with VAP and showing an area under the curve (AUC) greater than 0.70 were CRP (AUC = 0.76), interleukin (IL) 17A and 17C (IL17C) (0.74), macrophage colony-stimulating factor 1 (0.73), PCT (0.72), and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) (0.71). Multivariate analysis combining novel biomarkers revealed several pairs with p value of less than 0.001 and odds ratio greater than 1: VEGF-A + IL12 subunit beta (IL12B), Fms-related tyrosine kinase 3 ligands (Flt3L) + C–C chemokine 20 (CCL20), Flt3L + IL17A, Flt3L + IL6, STAM-binding protein (STAMBP) + CCL20, STAMBP + IL6, CCL20 + 4EBP1, CCL20 + caspase-8 (CASP8), IL6 + 4EBP1, and IL6 + CASP8. Best AUCs were observed for CRP + IL6 (0.79), CRP + CCL20 (0.78), CRP + IL17A, and CRP + IL17C. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE:. Our exploratory study shows that specific biomarkers, especially CRP combined with IL6, could help to better diagnose or predict early VAP occurrence in cardiac arrest patients.

Abstract

Objective: The study examines the effects of message modalities (visual vs. textual) and rhetorical approaches (narrative vs. expository information) on the elaboration and recall of COVID-19 vaccine information among individuals with diverse levels of science literacy. Methods: We recruited 328 U.S. adults who were not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and measured their message elaboration and information recall following exposure to a comic strip, an infographic, a written story, and a short article pertaining to the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Results: Results indicated no significant difference in levels of message elaboration and information recall among the four treatment groups. However, exposure to narratives mitigated the gap in message elaboration, whereas exposure to visual information reduced the disparity in information recall among individuals with varying levels of science literacy. Conclusion: Narratives can serve as a powerful tool for engaging individuals with lower levels of science literacy, as well as reducing the dependence on scientific knowledge for information processing among those with higher literacy levels. Furthermore, the inclusion of visuals in vaccine messages can augment their effectiveness in fostering shared knowledge among audiences with varying levels of science literacy.

Abstract

The New Experiments With Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) collaboration intends to achieve $\mathrm{sub-GeV/c^{2}}$ Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) detection using Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs). SPCs are gaseous detectors relying on ionization with a single ionization electron energy threshold. The latest generation of SPC for direct dark matter searches has been installed at SNOLAB in Canada in 2021. This article details the different processes involved in the fabrication of the NEWS-G experiment. Abstract

Sensitive computations are now routinely delegated to third-parties. In response, Confidential Computing technologies are being introduced to microprocessors, offering a protected processing environment, which we generically call an isolate, providing confidentiality and integrity guarantees to code and data hosted within -- even in the face of a privileged attacker. Isolates, with an attestation protocol, permit remote third-parties to establish a trusted "beachhead" containing known code and data on an otherwise untrusted machine. Yet, the rise of these technologies introduces many new problems, including: how to ease provisioning of computations safely into isolates; how to develop distributed systems spanning multiple classes of isolate; and what to do about the billions of "legacy" devices without support for Confidential Computing? Tackling the problems above, we introduce Veracruz, a framework that eases the design and implementation of complex privacy-preserving, collaborative, delegated computations among a group of mutually mistrusting principals. Veracruz supports multiple isolation technologies and provides a common programming model and attestation protocol across all of them, smoothing deployment of delegated computations over supported technologies. We demonstrate Veracruz in operation, on private in-cloud object detection on encrypted video streaming from a video camera. In addition to supporting hardware-backed isolates -- like AWS Nitro Enclaves and Arm Confidential Computing Architecture Realms -- Veracruz also provides pragmatic "software isolates" on Armv8-A devices without hardware Confidential Computing capability, using the high-assurance seL4 microkernel and our IceCap framework.

Abstract

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) is a process in which neutrinos scatter on a nucleus which acts as a single particle. Though the total cross section is large by neutrino standards, CE$\nu$NS has long proven difficult to detect, since the deposited energy into the nucleus is $\sim$ keV. In 2017, the COHERENT collaboration announced the detection of CE$\nu$NS using a stopped-pion source with CsI detectors, followed up the detection of CE$\nu$NS using an Ar target. The detection of CE$\nu$NS has spawned a flurry of activities in high-energy physics, inspiring new constraints on beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, and new experimental methods. The CE$\nu$NS process has important implications for not only high-energy physics, but also astrophysics, nuclear physics, and beyond. This whitepaper discusses the scientific importance of CE$\nu$NS, highlighting how present experiments such as COHERENT are informing theory, and also how future experiments will provide a wealth of information across the aforementioned fields of physics., Comment: contribution to Snowmasss 2021. Abstract

COVID-19 school closures initially revealed more than 75% of children lacked access to critical digital learning opportunities. Three out of four were living in the poorest 40% of households. Digital learning is impossible without connectivity and electricity. However, in places like Chad, Malawi and Niger, the proportion of people with access to electricity is below 1 in 5. What efforts will ensure these children are not further left behind in future crises if schools are again closed? How much will universal access to digital learning cost? The answer is US$1.4 trillion. This paper estimates the cost of universalizing digital learning by 2030, in alignment with the conceptual framework of the Reimagine Education initiative. It provides a rationale for cost assumptions; classifies costs into enabling digital learning and delivering digital learning; and, finally, discusses financing achievability by comparing the estimated costs with current spending in education and other sectors.

Abstract

Training and certification of personnel in capsule preparation are essential procedures, overseen by the pharmacist who delegates these tasks. These procedures aim not only to ensure the efficacy and safety of operations but also to establish a clear chain of responsibility. They align with established best practices. Certification grants formal authorization to qualified individuals to perform specific tasks. For new hires, a comprehensive training program is designed to facilitate their integration and empower them from the onset. We propose training objectives structured around a competency-based approach, highlighting objective evaluation criteria applicable in real-world practical settings. These training objectives address critical aspects such as the handling of hazardous substances, weighing and mixing of powders, and capsule filling. They also emphasize the importance of documentation and traceability. Specialized preparations and tools are offered to facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes.

Abstract

Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. Abstract

The amount of energy released by a nuclear recoil ionizing the atoms of the active volume of detection appears "quenched" compared to an electron of the same kinetic energy. This different behavior in ionization between electrons and nuclei is described by the Ionization Quenching Factor (IQF) and it plays a crucial role in direct dark matter searches. For low kinetic energies (below $50~\mathrm{keV}$), IQF measurements deviate significantly from common models used for theoretical predictions and simulations. We report measurements of the IQF for proton, an appropriate target for searches of Dark Matter candidates with a mass of approximately 1 GeV, with kinetic energies in between $2~\mathrm{keV}$ and $13~\mathrm{keV}$ in $100~\mathrm{mbar}$ of methane. We used the Comimac facility in order to produce the motion of nuclei and electrons of controlled kinetic energy in the active volume, and a NEWS-G SPC to measure the deposited energy. The Comimac electrons are used as reference to calibrate the detector with 7 energy points. A detailed study of systematic effects led to the final results well fitted by $\mathrm{IQF}~(E_K)= E_K^\alpha~/~(\beta + E_K^\alpha)$ with $\alpha=0.70\pm0.08$ and $\beta = 1.32\pm0.17$. In agreement with some previous works in other gas mixtures, we measured less ionization energy than predicted from SRIM simulations, the difference reaching $33\%$ at $2~\mathrm{keV}$, Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Kaluza-Klein (KK) axions appear in theories with extra dimensions as higher mass, significantly shorter lifetime, excitations of the Peccei-Quinn axion. When produced in the Sun, they would remain gravitationally trapped in the solar system, and their decay to a pair of photons could provide an explanation of the solar corona heating problem. A low-density detector would discriminate such a signal from the background, by identifying the separation of the interaction point of the two photons. The NEWS-G collaboration uses large volume Spherical Proportional Counters, gas-filled metallic spheres with a spherical anode in their centre. After observation of a single axionlike event in a 42 day long run with the SEDINE detector, a $90\%$ C.L. upper limit of $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<8.99\cdot10^{-13}\,GeV^{-1}$ is set on the axion-photon coupling for a KK axion density on Earth of $n_{a}=4.07\cdot10^{13}\,m^{-3}$ and two extra dimensions of size $R = 1\,eV^{-1}$., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. Abstract

The three-dimensional structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) is embedded in so-called generalized parton distributions, which are accessible from deeply virtual Compton scattering. In this process, a high energy electron is scattered off a nucleon by exchanging a virtual photon. Then, a highly-energetic real photon is emitted from one of the quarks inside the nucleon, which carries information on the quark's transverse position and longitudinal momentum. By measuring the cross-section of deeply virtual Compton scattering, Compton form factors related to the generalized parton distributions can be extracted. Here, we report the observation of unpolarized deeply virtual Compton scattering off a deuterium target. From the measured photon-electroproduction cross-sections, we have extracted the cross-section of a quasi-free neutron and a coherent deuteron. Due to the approximate isospin symmetry of quantum chromodynamics, we can determine the contributions from the different quark flavours to the helicity-conserved Compton form factors by combining our measurements with previous ones probing the proton's internal structure. These results advance our understanding of the description of the nucleon structure, which is important to solve the proton spin puzzle.

Abstract

The NEWS-G collaboration uses Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In this paper, we report the first measurements of the nuclear quenching factor in neon gas at \SI{2}{bar} using an SPC deployed in a neutron beam at the TUNL facility. The energy-dependence of the nuclear quenching factor is modelled using a simple power law: $\alpha$E$_{nr}^{\beta}$; we determine its parameters by simultaneously fitting the data collected with the detector over a range of energies. We measured the following parameters in Ne:CH$_{4}$ at \SI{2}{bar}: $\alpha$ = 0.2801 $\pm$ 0.0050 (fit) $\pm$ 0.0045 (sys) and $\beta$ = 0.0867 $\pm$ 0.020 (fit) $\pm$ 0.006(sys). Our measurements do not agree with expected values from SRIM or Lindhard theory. We demonstrated the feasibility of performing quenching factor measurements at sub-keV energies in gases using SPCs and a neutron beam.

Abstract

The article aims at exploring the use of multilingual education to build a convivialist society. The article reflects theoretically on how to combine convivialist education and multilingual education. Today’s hyperdiversity in society faces a dual challenge in accelerating and unsettling climate change. The convivialist manifesto entails five key principles namely: common naturality where humans are interdependent with nature; common humanity which must be respected in each person beyond any identity differences; common sociality, based on long-lasting and rich relationships in various human communities; legitimate individuation where the singularity of the person contributes to the common good; and eventually, creative opposition where conflicts are dealt in a fertile, peaceful and deliberative manner. These key principles are additionally subordinated to the need to control human desire for hubris and never-ending possession which represents a political alternative to material growth ideology. The concept of intertwining convivialist education and multilingual education is illustrated through a case study [Master dissertation] in a Norwegian school context focusing on the significance of mother tongue education in the school curriculum for mitigating climate change. The data for the case study was gathered by conducting focus group discussions with three mother tongue teachers and two Norwegian language teachers working in a language school for newly arrived immigrant pupils in Norway. The findings identified the limitation of the Norwegian, section 2-8, lacunas in the bilingual learning curricula and it argued for the need to strengthen mother tongue education and the role of mother tongue teachers in promoting sustainable development in the school curriculum. Based on the study’s specific contextual findings and theoretical perspectives combining convivialist and multilingual education, the article infers that promoting multilingual education in schools can help mitigate climate change, and promote biocultural diversity and build a more convivialist society. The article thus aims to suggest some practical suggestions in a Norwegian plurilingual context and furthermore, it explores an expanded theoretical frame for convivialist multilingual education.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Although immunomodulators have established benefit against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in general, it is uncertain whether such agents improve outcomes without increasing the risk of secondary infections in the specific subgroup of previously immunocompromised patients. We assessed the effect of immunomodulators on outcomes of immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022335397). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and references of relevant articles were searched up to 01-06-2022. Authors of potentially eligible randomized controlled trials were contacted to provide data on immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control (i.e., placebo or standard-of-care). Findings: Eleven randomized controlled trials involving 397 immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included. Ten trials had low risk of bias. There was no difference between immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control regarding mortality [30/182 (16.5%) vs 41/215 (19.1%); RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.61–1.41; p = 0.74], secondary infections (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.64–1.58; p = 0.99) and change in World Health Organization ordinal scale from baseline to day 15 (weighed mean difference 0.27, 95% CI -0.09–0.63; p = 0.15). In subgroup analyses including only patients with hematologic malignancy, only trials with low risk of bias, only trials administering IL-6 inhibitors, or only trials administering immunosuppressants, there was no difference between comparators regarding mortality. Interpretation: Immunomodulators, compared to control, were not associated with harmful or beneficial outcomes, including mortality, secondary infections, and change in ordinal scale, when administered to immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19.
