Abstract

We report the design, operation and performance of a high-resolution, low-latency, bunch-by-bunch feedback system for nano-beam stabilisation. The system employs novel, ultra-low quality-factor cavity beam position monitors (BPMs), a two-stage analogue signal down-mixing system, and a digital signal processing and feedback board incorporating an FPGA. The FPGA firmware allows for the real-time integration of up to fifteen samples of the BPM waveforms within a measured latency of 232 ns. We show that this real-time sample integration improves significantly the beam position resolution and, consequently, the feedback performance. The best demonstrated real-time beam position resolution was 19 nm, which, as far as we are aware, is the best real-time resolution achieved in any operating BPM system. The feedback was operated in two complementary modes to stabilise the vertical position of the ultra-small beam produced at the focal point of the ATF2 beamline at KEK. In single-BPM feedback mode, beam stabilisation to 50$\pm$5 nm was demonstrated. In two-BPM feedback mode, beam stabilisation to 41$\pm$4 nm was achieved.

Abstract

A high-resolution, intratrain position feedback system has been developed to achieve and maintain collisions at the proposed future electron-positron International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype has been commissioned and tested with a beam in the extraction line of the Accelerator Test Facility at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan. It consists of a stripline beam position monitor (BPM) with analogue signal-processing electronics, a custom digital board to perform the feedback calculation, and a stripline kicker driven by a high-current amplifier. The closed-loop feedback latency is 148 ns. For a three-bunch train with 154 ns bunch spacing, the feedback system has been used to stabilize the third bunch to 450 nm. The kicker response is linear, and the feedback performance is maintained, over a correction range of over $\pm$60 {\mu}m. The propagation of the correction has been confirmed by using an independent stripline BPM located downstream of the feedback system. The system has been demonstrated to meet the BPM resolution, beam kick, and latency requirements for the ILC.

Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. Abstract

The Dark matter Experiment using Argon Pulse-shape discrimination (DEAP) has been designed for a direct detection search for particle dark matter using a single-phase liquid argon target. The projected cross section sensitivity for DEAP-3600 to the spin-independent scattering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on nucleons is $10^{-46}~\rm{cm}^{2}$ for a 100 GeV/$c^2$ WIMP mass with a fiducial exposure of 3 tonne-years. Abstract

The Hamamatsu R5912-HQE photomultiplier-tube (PMT) is a novel high-quantum efficiency PMT. It is currently used in the DEAP-3600 dark matter detector and is of significant interest for future dark matter and neutrino experiments where high signal yields are needed. We report on the methods developed for in-situ characterization and monitoring of DEAP's 255 R5912-HQE PMTs. This includes a detailed discussion of typical measured single-photoelectron charge distributions, correlated noise (afterpulsing), dark noise, double, and late pulsing characteristics. The characterization is performed during the detector commissioning phase using laser light injected through a light diffusing sphere and during normal detector operation using LED light injected through optical fibres.

Abstract

The Hamamatsu R5912-HQE photomultiplier-tube (PMT) is a novel high-quantum efficiency PMT. It is currently used in the DEAP-3600 dark matter detector and is of significant interest for future dark matter and neutrino experiments where high signal yields are needed. We report on the methods developed for in-situ characterization and monitoring of DEAP's 255 R5912-HQE PMTs. This includes a detailed discussion of typical measured single-photoelectron charge distributions, correlated noise (afterpulsing), dark noise, double, and late pulsing characteristics. The characterization is performed during the detector commissioning phase using laser light injected through a light diffusing sphere and during normal detector operation using LED light injected through optical fibres.

Abstract

The Dark matter Experiment using Argon Pulse-shape discrimination (DEAP) has been designed for a direct detection search for particle dark matter using a single-phase liquid argon target. The projected cross section sensitivity for DEAP-3600 to the spin-independent scattering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on nucleons is 10−46cm2 for a 100 GeV/c2 WIMP mass with a fiducial exposure of 3 tonne-years. This paper describes the physical properties and construction of the DEAP-3600 detector.

Abstract

This paper reports the first results of a direct dark matter search with the DEAP-3600 single-phase liquid argon (LAr) detector. The experiment was performed 2 km underground at SNOLAB (Sudbury, Canada) utilizing a large target mass, with the LAr target contained in a spherical acrylic vessel of 3600 kg capacity. The LAr is viewed by an array of PMTs, which would register scintillation light produced by rare nuclear recoil signals induced by dark matter particle scattering. An analysis of 4.44 live days (fiducial exposure of 9.87 tonne-days) of data taken with the nearly full detector during the initial filling phase demonstrates the detector performance and the best electronic recoil rejection using pulse-shape discrimination in argon, with leakage $<1.2\times 10^{-7}$ (90% C.L.) between 16 and 33 keV$_{ee}$. No candidate signal events are observed, which results in the leading limit on WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section on argon, $<1.2\times 10^{-44}$ cm$^2$ for a 100 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass (90% C.L.)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

16. Development of high-resolution cavity beam position monitors for use in low-latency feedback systems

Abstract

The FONT beam-based, intra-train feedback system has been designed to provide beam position stabilisation in single-pass accelerators. A FONT feedback system utilising position information from three high-resolution cavity beam position monitors (BPMs) has been commissioned at the interaction point (IP) of the Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) at KEK, Japan. The ultimate goal of the feedback in the IP region is to stabilise the low-emittance electron beam to the nanometre level. The operation, optimisation and resolution performance of this IP system forms the subject of this thesis. The IP feedback system makes use of beam position measurements from the BPMs to drive an upstream kicker and provide a local correction. The BPMs have a fast decay time of ~25 ns to allow bunches within the beam train to be resolved. The operation of the IP BPMs, the noise floor, and position sensitivity to phase are discussed in detail. Attempts are made to diagnose an unwanted ~60 MHz oscillation in the cavity signals, which is bunch charge-dependent and thus likely beam generated. The BPM resolution estimate was notably improved from 50 nm to 20 nm using waveform integration in analysis of the BPM signals. A multi-parameter fit was used to address inaccurate calibrations and charge-dependencies to achieve more consistent resolution performance and produce a best-ever resolution estimate for the BPMs of 17.5 ± 0.4 nm. A novel mode of IP beam position stabilisation using two BPMs as input to the feedback has been successfully demonstrated. The beam position was stabilised to 57 ± 4 nm, as measured at an independent BPM. Feedback performance was improved to this level by sampling the waveform to optimise bunch-to-bunch correlation. Analysis suggests correction capability could be enhanced by firmware waveform integration to achieve a measurable beam stabilisation of ~40 nm in the future.

Abstract

The magnetic properties and magnetoresistance of thin-film circular and elliptical magnetic rings made from Co, NiFe, NiFe/FeMn, and Co/Cu/NiFe have been explored. Single-layer rings show stable onion and vortex states and metastable twisted states containing a 360° wall. For NiFe rings, four-point magnetotransport results can be explained quantitatively by anisotropic magnetoresistance. NiFe/FeMn exchange-biased rings show offset hysteresis loops, and the easy axis is determined by a combination of the ring ellipticity and the exchange coupling. In Co/Cu/NiFe multilayer rings the behavior is dominated by the magnetostatic coupling between the domain walls in the Co and NiFe. In the major loop the giant magnetoresistance varies between three distinct levels corresponding to combinations of onion and vortex states in the NiFe and Co layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Large area square arrays of circular cobalt dots, nominally 100 nm in diameter and 20 nm in thickness, were patterned using interference lithography. Magnetic remanent states were measured using off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that the dots are mostly single domain, although vortex states and multidomain configurations are occasionally observed. Significant magnetic interactions between adjacent dots result in variations in their magnetization direction away from the direction of the applied field. The suitability of such dots for data storage applications is discussed. Quantitative magnetic phase measurements were also obtained by applying the transport of intensity equation to images acquired using the Fresnel mode of Lorentz microscopy in the TEM. Abstract

A study of the magnetization reversal process of NiFe elliptical rings has been made as a function of ring size and ring orientation with respect to the applied field. The long axis of the rings ranged from 600 nm to 6 μm and the ring width and thickness were fixed at ∼220 and 20 nm, respectively. The magnetization reversal mechanism was characterized using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy as a function of the angle between the long axis of the ellipse and the applied field. A decrease in the range of stability of the intermediate vortex state with increasing angle between the long axis and the applied field was observed. The structure of the remanent domain walls was dependent on the size of the ring, and a phase diagram of domain-wall type as a function of ring geometry calculated from Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations is presented for comparison with the experimental data.
