For many purposes, classical plasma dynamics models can work surprisingly well even for strong electromagnetic fields, approaching the Schwinger critical fields, and high frequencies, approaching the Compton frequency. However, the applicability of classical models tends to depend rather sensitively on the details of the problem. In the present paper, we study the specific case of plasma oscillations to draw a line between the classical and quantum relativistic regimes. Due to the field geometry of study, mechanisms like radiation reaction and Breit-Wheeler pair production, which tend to be important for electromagnetic fields, are rather effectively suppressed. Moreover, we find that the polarization current due to the electron spin is generally negligible for frequencies below the Compton frequency, compared to the free current, whose magnitude is well-approximated by the classical Vlasov theory. However, we show that pair creation due to the Schwinger mechanism can sometimes be important for surprisingly modest field strengths, of the order of 10 % of the critical field or even smaller. We present an experimental study of immiscible, two-phase fluid flow through a three-dimensional porous medium consisting of randomly-packed, monodisperse glass spheres. Our experiments combine refractive-index matching and laser-induced fluorescence imaging to resolve the morphology and stability of the moving interface resulting from the injection of one fluid into another. The imposed injection rate sets a balance between gravitational and viscous forces, producing interface morphologies which range from unstable collections of tangled fingers at low rates to stable sheets at high rates. The image data are complemented by time-resolved pressure measurements. We develop a stability criterion for the fluid interface based on the analysis of the 3D images and the pressure data. This criterion involves the Darcy permeability in each of the two phases and the time derivative of the pressure drop across the medium. We observe that the relative permeability encountered by the invading fluid is modified by the imposed flow rate in our experiment, which impacts the two-phase flow dynamics. We show that, in addition to the balance between the relevant forces driving the dynamics, local regions of crystalline order in the beadpack (crystallites) affect the stability of the invading front. This work provides insights into how disorder on multiple length scales in porous media can interact with viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces to determine the stability and dynamics of immiscible fluid interfaces., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

We use a recently developed kinetic model derived from the Dirac equation, in order to study electromagnetic wave propagation in superstrong magnetic fields, such as in magnetars, where relativistic Landau quantization is prominent. The leading contribution to the conductivity tensor in such a plasma is calculated. It is found that the electron Hall current has an anomalous contribution, in the quantum relativistic regime, where the effective particle energy has a significant contribution from the diamagnetic and Zeeman energy. As a result, a new quantum resonance frequency appears, and the dispersion relation for the left- and right-hand polarized modes are strongly modified for long and moderate wavelengths. The implications for magnetar physics are discussed.

Purpose: To derive kinetic equations for multi-compartmental contrast agent distribution from first principles and apply it to two and three compartments for Gd-EOB-DTPA using low time resolution human liver DCE-MRI data. Methods: The continuity and diffusion equation were combined and used to derive a general form for differential equations governing multi-compartmental particle exchange. They were applied to two (equivalent to the Tofts model) and three compartments. Both models were fit to human DCE-MRI data with low temporal resolution and three compartment model's parameters' implications are discussed. Results: The model derived for two compartments is shown to be equivalent with the Tofts model. Using reasonable biological and physical assumptions an analytical solution for the three compartment model is obtained. The three compartment model was able to fit all Gd-EOB-DTPA DCE-MRI data whereas the Tofts model did not. Differences were increased for cases with large as well as rapid uptake of contrast. Conclusion: We demonstrated the ability to fit sparse Gd-EOB-DTPA DCE-MRI data using a three compartment model derived from first principles whose parameters can be used to help quantify overall and regional liver function.

Real-time light detection and ranging (LiDAR) perceptions, e.g., 3D object detection and simultaneous localization and mapping are computationally intensive to mobile devices of limited resources and often offloaded on the edge. Offloading LiDAR perceptions requires compressing the raw sensor data, and lossy compression is used for efficiently reducing the data volume. Lossy compression degrades the quality of LiDAR point clouds, and the perception performance is decreased consequently. In this work, we present an interpolation algorithm improving the quality of a LiDAR point cloud to mitigate the perception performance loss due to lossy compression. The algorithm targets the range image (RI) representation of a point cloud and interpolates points at the RI based on depth gradients. Compared to existing image interpolation algorithms, our algorithm shows a better qualitative result when the point cloud is reconstructed from the interpolated RI. In this paper, a phase-space description of electron-positron pair-creation will be applied, based on a Wigner transformation of the Klein-Gordon equation. The resulting theory is similar in many respects to the equations from the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. However, in the former case, all physics related to particle spin is neglected. In the present paper we compare the pair-production rate in vacuum and plasmas, with and without spin effects, in order to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the spinless approximation. It is found that for modest frequencies of the electromagnetic field, the pair production rate of the Klein-Gordon theory is a good approximation to the Dirac theory, provided the matter density is small enough for Pauli blocking to be neglected, and a factor of two related to the difference in the vacuum energy density is compensated for.

We study the contribution from the electron spin to the ponderomotive force, using a quantum kinetic model including the spin-orbit correction. Specifically, we derive an analytical expression for the ponderomotive force, applicable for electrostatic waves propagating parallel to an external magnetic field. To evaluate the expression, we focus on the case of Langmuir waves and on the case of the spin-resonance wave mode, where the classical and spin contributions to the ponderomotive force are compared. Somewhat surprisingly, dependent on the parameter regime, we find that the spin contribution to the ponderomotive force may dominate for the Langmuir wave, whereas the classical contribution can dominate for the spin resonance mode. Naturally, this does not prevent the opposite case from being the more common one.

A blind spot is any input to a program that can be arbitrarily mutated without affecting the program's output. Blind spots can be used for steganography or to embed malware payloads. If blind spots overlap file format keywords, they indicate parsing bugs that can lead to exploitable differentials. For example, one could craft a document that renders one way in one viewer and a completely different way in another viewer. They have also been used to circumvent code signing in Android binaries, to coerce certificate authorities to misbehave, and to execute HTTP request smuggling and parameter pollution attacks. This paper formalizes the operational semantics of blind spots, leading to a technique based on dynamic information flow tracking that automatically detects blind spots. An efficient implementation is introduced and evaluated against a corpus of over a thousand diverse PDFs parsed through MuPDF, revealing exploitable bugs in the parser. All of the blind spot classifications are confirmed to be correct and the missed detection rate is no higher than 11%. On average, at least 5% of each PDF file is completely ignored by the parser. Our results show promise that this technique is an efficient automated means to detect exploitable parser bugs, over-permissiveness and differentials. We study the evolution of electrostatic plasma waves, using the relativistic Vlasov equation extended by the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction, accounting for the back-reaction due to the emission of single particle Larmor radiation. In particular, the Langmuir wave damping is calculated as a function of wavenumber, initial temperature, and initial electric field amplitude. Moreover, the background distribution function loses energy in the process, and we calculate the cooling rate as a function of initial temperature and initial wave amplitude. Finally, we investigate how the relative magnitude of wave damping and background cooling varies with the initial parameters. In particular, it is found that the relative contribution to the energy loss associated with background cooling decreases slowly with the initial wave amplitude.

Strong field physics close to or above the Schwinger limit are typically studied with vacuum as initial condition, or by considering test particle dynamics. However, with a plasma present initially, quantum relativistic mechanisms such as Schwinger pair-creation are complemented by classical plasma nonlinearities. In this work we use the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism to study the interplay between classical and quantum mechanical mechanisms for ultra-strong electric fields. In particular, the effects of initial density and temperature on the plasma oscillation dynamics are determined.

We present experiments and theory describing the transition from viscosity-stabilized flow to gravitationally unstable fingering for two-phase flow in a 3D synthetic porous medium. Observation is made possible by the use of our newly developed table-top 3D-scanner based on optical index matching and laser-induced fluorescence, which is described in detail. In the experiment, a more dense, more viscous fluid injected at a fixed flow-rate from a point source at the top of the flow cell displaces a less viscous, less dense fluid. We observe a stable invasion zone near the inlet, which increases in size with increasing flow rates, and presents initially a close to hemispherical shape. At later times, the invasion front transits to an unstable mode and a fingering flow regime. The transition occurs at a predicted critical radius, Rc, corresponding to the zero of the combined viscous and gravitational pressure gradient., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We have studied the linear dispersion relation for Langmuir waves in plasmas of very high density, based on the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. The vacuum contribution to the physical observables leads to ultra-violet divergences, that are removed by a charge renormalization. The remaining vacuum contribution is small, and is in agreement with previously derived expressions for the time-dependent vacuum polarization. The main new feature of the theory is a damping mechanism similar to Landau damping, but where the plasmon energy give rise to creation of electron-positron pairs. The dependence of the damping rate (pair-creation rate) on wave-number, temperature, and density is analyzed. Finally, the analytical results of linearized theory are compared.

The first interstellar object to be observed in our solar system 1I/2017 U1 'Oumuamua combines the lack of observable cometary activity with an extra-gravitational acceleration. This has given rise to several mutually exclusive explanations based on different assumptions in the material composition of 'Oumuamua. We show how a combination of observations in the infrared and optical spectra may serve to distinguish between these explanations once another object with 'Omuamua-like properties comes close enough to earth. This possibility is linked to the widely different thermal properties of the different material models that have been proposed. Developing a model for the thermal conduction and infrared signal from a fractal model we compare predictions of the infrared signal with that from standard thermal models that assume 'Oumuamua to be either a solid piece of rock/ice or a thin sheet.

As is well-known, for plasmas of high density and modest temperature, the classical kinetic theory needs to be extended. Such extensions can be based on the Schr\"odinger Hamiltonian, applying a Wigner transform of the density matrix, in which case the Vlasov equation is replaced by the celebrated Wigner-Moyal equation. Extending the treatment to more complicated models, we investigate aspects such as spin dynamics (based on the Pauli Hamiltonian), exchange effects (using the Hartree-Fock approximation), Landau quantization, and quantum relativistic theory. In the relativistic theory we first study cases where the field strength is well beyond Schwingers critical field. Both weakly relativistic theory (gamma factors close to unity) and strongly relativistic theory are investigated, using assumptions that allow for a separation of electron and positron states. Finally, we study the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner (DHW) formalism, which is a fully quantum relativistic theory, allowing for field strengths of the order of the Schwinger critical field or even larger. As a result, the quantum kinetic theory is extended to cover phenomena such as Zitterbewegung and electron-positron pair creation. Wave-particle interaction (WPI) is one of the most fundamental processes in plasma physics in which one most prominent example is the Landau damping. Owing to its excellent energy-exchange mechanism, the WPI has gained increasing interest not only from theoretical points of view but also its many important applications including plasma heating and plasma acceleration. In this review work, we present theoretical backgrounds of linear and nonlinear wave-particle interactions in quantum plasmas. Specifically, we focus on the wave-particle interactions for homogeneous plasma waves (i.e., waves with infinite extent rather than a localized pulse) as well as for propagating electrostatic waves in the weak and strong quantum regimes to demonstrate the modifications of several classical features including those associated with resonant and trapped particles. The linear and nonlinear theories of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) are studied in a partially degenerate quantum plasma with two-temperature electrons and stationary ions. The initial equilibrium of electrons is assumed to be given by the Fermi-Dirac distribution at finite temperature. By employing the multi-scale asymptotic expansion technique to the one-dimensional Wigner-Moyal and Poisson equations, it is shown that the effects of multi-plasmon resonances lead to a modified complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with a new nonlocal nonlinearity. Besides giving rise to a nonlocal nonlinear term, the wave-particle resonance also modifies the local nonlinear coupling coefficient of the KdV equation. The latter is shown to conserve the number of particles, however, the wave energy decays with time. A careful analysis shows that the two-plasmon resonance is the dominant mechanism for nonlinear Landau damping of EAWs. An approximate soliton solution of the KdV equation is also obtained, and it is shown that the nonlinear Landau damping causes the wave amplitude to decay slowly with time compared to the classical theory., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure; The revised version to appear in Physics of Plasmas (Oct 2021)

We derive a system of coupled partial differential equations for the equal-time Wigner function in an arbitrary strong electromagnetic field using the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. In the electrostatic limit, we present a 3+1-system of four coupled partial differential equations, which are completed by Ampere's law. This electrostatic system is further studied for two different cases. In the first case, we consider linearized wave propagation in plasma accounting for the nonzero vacuum expectation values. We then derive the dispersion relation and compare it with well-known limiting cases. In the second case, we consider Schwinger pair production using the local density approximation to allow for analytical treatment. The dependence of the pair production rate on the perpendicular momentum is investigated and it turns out that the spread of the produced pairs along with perpendicular momentum depends on the strength of the applied electric field.

With the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies, the fields of immunogenomics and adaptive immune receptor repertoire research are facing both opportunities and challenges. Adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing (AIRR-seq) has become an increasingly important tool to characterize T and B cell responses in settings of interest. However, the majority of AIRR-seq studies conducted so far were performed in individuals of European ancestry, restricting the ability to identify variation in human adaptive immune responses across populations and limiting their applications. As AIRR-seq studies depend on the ability to assign VDJ sequence reads to the correct germline gene segments, efforts to characterize the genomic loci that encode adaptive immune receptor genes in different populations are urgently needed. The availability of comprehensive germline gene databases and further applications of AIRR-seq studies to individuals of non-European ancestry will substantially enhance our understanding of human adaptive immune responses, promote the development of effective diagnostics and treatments, and eventually advance precision medicine., Comment: 22 pages,1 table

Electron holes (EH) are localized modes in plasma kinetic theory which appear as vortices in phase space. Earlier research on EH is based on the Schamel distribution function (df). A novel distribution function is proposed here, generalizing the original Schamel df in a recursive manner. Nonlinear solutions obtained by kinetic simulations are presented, with velocities twice the electron thermal speed. Using 1D-1V kinetic simulations, their propagation characteristics are traced and their stability is established by studying their long-time evolution and their behavior through mutual collisions., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Scientific Reports

Slow flow of a single fluid through a porous medium is well understood on a macroscopic level through Darcy's law, a linear relation between flow rate and a combination of pressure differences, viscosity, and gravitational forces. Two-phase flow is complicated by the interface separating the fluids, but understanding of two-dimensional, two-phase flow has been obtained from experiments using transparent cells. In most three-dimensional media, however, visual observation is difficult. Here, we present preliminary results of experiments on a model medium consisting of randomly packed glass spheres, in which one fluorescent liquid invades another. By refractive index matching and scanning with a sheet-shaped laser beam, we obtain slices of the flow patterns, which we combine into three-dimensional pictures. We observe a compact region of invading fluid, surrounded by finger-like protrusions. The compact region becomes more dominant with increasing invader flow rate. The patterns are theoretically analyzed in terms of the interplay between gravitational, viscous, and capillary forces.
