1. A framework for understanding data science

Abstract

The objective of this research is to provide a framework with which the data science community can understand, define, and develop data science as a field of inquiry. The framework is based on the classical reference framework (axiology, ontology, epistemology, methodology) used for 200 years to define knowledge discovery paradigms and disciplines in the humanities, sciences, algorithms, and now data science. I augmented it for automated problem-solving with (methods, technology, community). The resulting data science reference framework is used to define the data science knowledge discovery paradigm in terms of the philosophy of data science addressed in previous papers and the data science problem-solving paradigm, i.e., the data science method, and the data science problem-solving workflow, both addressed in this paper. The framework is a much called for unifying framework for data science as it contains the components required to define data science. For insights to better understand data science, this paper uses the framework to define the emerging, often enigmatic, data science problem-solving paradigm and workflow, and to compare them with their well-understood scientific counterparts, scientific problem-solving paradigm and workflow., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Data science is not a science. It is a research paradigm with an unfathomed scope, scale, complexity, and power for knowledge discovery that is not otherwise possible and can be beyond human reasoning. It is changing our world practically and profoundly already widely deployed in tens of thousands of applications in every discipline in an AI Arms Race that, due to its inscrutability, can lead to unfathomed risks. This paper presents an axiology of data science, its purpose, nature, importance, risks, and value for problem solving, by exploring and evaluating its remarkable, definitive features. As data science is in its infancy, this initial, speculative axiology is intended to aid in understanding and defining data science to recognize its potential benefits, risks, and open research challenges. AI based data science is inherently about uncertainty that may be more realistic than our preference for the certainty of science. Data science will have impacts far beyond knowledge discovery and will take us into new ways of understanding the world.

Abstract

Data science is not a science. It is a research paradigm. Its power, scope, and scale will surpass science, our most powerful research paradigm, to enable knowledge discovery and change our world. We have yet to understand and define it, vital to realizing its potential and managing its risks. Modern data science is in its infancy. Emerging slowly since 1962 and rapidly since 2000, it is a fundamentally new field of inquiry, one of the most active, powerful, and rapidly evolving 21st century innovations. Due to its value, power, and applicability, it is emerging in over 40 disciplines, hundreds of research areas, and thousands of applications. Millions of data science publications contain myriad definitions of data science and data science problem solving. Due to its infancy, many definitions are independent, application specific, mutually incomplete, redundant, or inconsistent, hence so is data science. This research addresses this data science multiple definitions challenge by proposing the development of coherent, unified definition based on a data science reference framework using a data science journal for the data science community to achieve such a definition. This paper provides candidate definitions for essential data science artifacts that are required to discuss such a definition. They are based on the classical research paradigm concept consisting of a philosophy of data science, the data science problem solving paradigm, and the six component data science reference framework (axiology, ontology, epistemology, methodology, methods, technology) that is a frequently called for unifying framework with which to define, unify, and evolve data science. It presents challenges for defining data science, solution approaches, i.e., means for defining data science, and their requirements and benefits as the basis of a comprehensive solution.

7. Reconciliation in ethnic conflict through identity transformation

Abstract

This thesis utilises a socio-psychological approach to reconciliation to explore the process of reconciliation between groups divided by intractable ethnic conflict in the Mindanao-Sulu region of the Philippines. It suggests that, in order for reconciliation to advance, group identities, in the form of a specific configuration of societal beliefs held by ethnic groups in such situations, require transformation. Specifically, this study explores the reconciliation process in the absence of formal settlement, shedding light upon how reconciliation develops, the actors involved and the challenges faced in such circumstances. Through the case of Mindanao, this thesis analyses a stage and type of conflict which has hitherto been little studied in relation to reconciliation, and in a region (Southeast Asia) which has also been comparatively neglected. Using data acquired from fieldwork interviews conducted with key stakeholders in Mindanao, analysis of a wide range of documents and a content analysis of both the national and Mindanaobased print media, the extent of identity transformation in line with reconciliation in Filipino society, is explored. The role of societal elites and social institutions in reflecting, disseminating and appealing to conflict-supporting societal beliefs, as well as their role in progressing reconciliation, is assessed. Existing attempts to promote reconciliation initiatives are evaluated. This study argues that reconciliation initiatives undertaken at the pre-settlement stage can have significant influence on both individual and group identities. It also suggests that, whilst there has been substantial progress in transforming conflict-supporting societal beliefs and forging transcendent identities crucial to the process of reconciliation at a Mindanao level, this success has not been replicated to the same degree at the national level. These findings have significance for future policy relating to the conflict and for the theoretical literature on reconciliation. They support initiatives undertaken at the pre-settlement stage and suggest that reconciliation should be considered as consisting of multiple independent, yet intrinsically linked, processes which advance at differing tempos across various levels of society and between stake holders.

Abstract

The database research community is rightly proud of success in basic research, and its remarkable record of technology transfer. Now the field needs to radically broaden its research focus to attack the issues of capturing, storing, analyzing, and presenting the vast array of online data. The database research community should embrace a broader research agenda -- broadening the definition of database management to embrace all the content of the Web and other online data stores, and rethinking our fundamental assumptions in light of technology shifts. To accelerate this transition, we recommend changing the way research results are evaluated and presented. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. GDPR in Europe and similar regulations, such as the California CCPA, require new levels of privacy support for consumers. Most challenging to IT departments is the “right to be forgotten”. Hence, an enterprise must ensure that ALL information about a specific consumer be deleted from enterprise storage, when requested. Since enterprises are internally heavily “siloed”, sharing of information is usually accomplished by copying data between systems. This makes finding and deleting all copies of data on a particular consumer difficult. GDPR also requires the notion of purposes, which is an access control model orthogonal to the one customarily in SQL. Herein, we sketch an implementation of purposes and show how it fits within a conventional access control framework. We then propose two solutions to supporting GDPR in a DBMS. When a “green field” environment is present, we propose a solution which directly supports the process of ensuring GDPR compliance at enterprise-scale. Specifically, it is designed to store every fact about a consumer exactly once. Therefore, the right to be forgotten is readily supported by deleting that fact. On the other hand, when dealing with legacy systems in the enterprise, we propose a second solution which tracks all copies of personal information, so they can be deleted on request. Of course, this solution entails additional overhead in the DBMS. Once data leaves the DBMS, it is in some application. We propose “sandboxing” applications in a novel way that will prevent them from leaking data to the outside world when inappropriate. Lastly, we discuss the challenges associated with auditing and logging of data. This paper sketches the design of the above GDPR compliant facilities, which we collectively term SchengenDB.
