Background Several factors affect heart transplant (HTx) and lung transplant (LTx) program outcomes. Variabilities in institutional and community characteristics have been shown to influence survival. At present, half of HTx centers in the United States do not possess a concomitant LTx program. This study sought to better understand the characteristics of HTx with and without LTx programs. Methods Nationwide transplant data were collected from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) in August 2020. SRTR star rating ranges from tier 1 (lowest) to tier 5 (highest). HTx volumes and SRTR star ratings for survival were compared between the centers with heart-only (H0) programs and the centers with heart-lung (HL) programs. Results SRTR star ratings were available for 117 transplant centers with one or more HTx reported. The median number of HTx performed over 1 year was 16 (interquartile range [IQR]: 2–29). The number of HL centers (n = 67, 57.3%) were comparable to H0 centers (n = 50, 42.7%; p = 0.14). The HTx volume at the HL centers (28 [IQR: 17–41]) exceeded the HTx volume at the H0 centers (13 [IQR: 9–23]; p < 0.01), but were comparable to the LTx volume at the HL centers (31 [IQR: 16–46]; p = 0.25). The median HTx one-year survival rating was 3 (IQR: 2–4) at both the H0 and HL centers (p = 0.85). The HTx and LTx volumes were positively associated with the respective 1-year survivals (p < 0.01). Conclusion While the presence of an LTx program is not directly associated with HTx survival, it has a positive association with the HTx volume. Background: Predicted heart mass (PHM) is a commonly used tool for donor‐to‐recipient size matching. However, incorporating body weight as part of PHM can be considered problematic given its high variability, and low metabolic nature of fat. We sought to assess whether substituting the actual donor and recipient weight with the ideal body weight (IBW) would affect the association of donor‐to‐recipient PHM ratio with 1‐year and overall survival after heart transplantation. Methods: The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database was queried for adult patients who received a primary heart transplant between January 2000 and September 2021. Results: Both PHM and ideal PHM (IPHM) ratios were associated with one‐year (PHM: p =.003; IPHM: p =.0007) and overall (PHM: p =.02; IPHM: p =.02) survival. In the continuous analysis with restricted cubic splines, both PHM (p =.0003) and IPHM (p =.00001) were associated with relative hazards of death. The study of the single-crystal X-ray structures of both the trans bis and the tris isomers of the compound, 2,2'-dioxybiphenyl-chloro-cyclotetraphosphazenes confirms its flexibility that gives rise to different crystalline forms obtained from the same system. The calculated low-energy barriers and the highly disordered phosphazene ring conformations observed in the solid state support the flexibility of the phosphazene ring.

Structural and spectral perturbations are seen when oxalate ion is substituted at the binding site for carbonate ion, in lactoferrin protein that belongs to the family of transferrin proteins. However, polypeptide folding and domain closure remain unaffected by the substitution. Oxalate is bound to iron at the C-lobe site of the bilobal transferrin in a symmetric 1,2-bidentate manner, whereas at the N-lobe site, the binding is asymmetric. This happens because oxalate, being a larger anion, displaces the wall forming arginine at the anion binding site.

CuI complexes containing the bulky dialkylbiarylphosphane 2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl (tBuXPhos, L) and an ancillary ligand (Cl−, Br−, I−, MeCN, ClO4− or SCN−) have been structurally characterized, namely, chlorido[2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP]copper(I), [CuCl(C29H45P)], 1, bromido[2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP]copper(I), [CuBr(C29H45P)], 2, [2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP]iodidocopper(I), [CuI(C29H45P)], 3, (acetonitrile‐κN)[2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP]copper(I) hexafluoridophosphate, [Cu(CH3CN)(C29H45P)]PF6, 4, [2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP](perchlorato‐κO)copper(I), [Cu(ClO4)(C29H45P)], 5, and di‐μ‐thiocyanato‐κ2S:N;κ2N:S‐bis{[2‐(di‐tert‐butylphosphanyl)‐2′,4′,6′‐triisopropylbiphenyl‐κP]copper(I)}, [Cu2(NCS)2(C29H45P)2], 6. Iodide complex 3 shows significant CuI–arene interactions, in contrast to its chloride 1 and bromide 2 counterparts, which is attributed to the weaker interaction between the iodide ion and the CuI centre. When replacing iodide with an acetonitrile (in 4) or perchlorate (in 5) ligand, the reduced interaction between the CuI atom and the ancillary ligand results in stronger CuI–arene interactions. No CuI–arene interactions are observed in dimer 6, due to the tricoordinated CuI centre having sufficient electron density from the coordinated ligands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physicochemical and crystallographic studiesreveal the binding behavior of lactoferrin (Lf) to iron(III) and copper(II). Lfis a glycoprotein that easily binds with iron in biological fluids and thus controls its presence therein. The studies show that binding is done through the carbonate (CO3) anion which locks in bidentate fashion to the metal. Oxalate (C2O4) ions can displace one or both CO3 in a Lf-Cu(II) complex but notin a Lf-Fe(III) complex. In the hybrid (CO3-C2O4) complex, which results when alittle EDTA is present, the CO3 binds specifically at the C-lobe, displacing nearby side chains. A generalized model for anion binding is developed from these results.

The plant hormone ethylene is involved in many plant development stages including germination, leaf loss, aging, growth and fruit ripening. Ethylene has been used successfully to ripen fruit, but after it was discovered to be produced naturally by most plants, experiments have begun to explore whether absorption of ethylene emitted by plants can slow their aging.

Research was conducted to examine the coordination chemistry of copper(I) with PBz3. Results were based on the X-ray structure determination of the complex and a comparison of the solid-state 31P CPMAS NMR parameters of (Cu(PBz3)2)(CuBr2) and (Cu(PBz3)2)PF6 with the ones derived from a range of other two-, three- and four-coordinate copper(I) phosphine complexes. Findings reveal that bis(tribenzylphosphine)copper(I) salts preferentially form two-coordinate linear 'CuP2' complexes.
