Abstract

The following authors were omitted from the original version of this Data Descriptor: Markus Reichstein and Nicolas Vuichard. Both contributed to the code development and N. Vuichard contributed to the processing of the ERA-Interim data downscaling. Furthermore, the contribution of the co-author Frank Tiedemann was re-evaluated relative to the colleague Corinna Rebmann, both working at the same sites, and based on this re-evaluation a substitution in the co-author list is implemented (with Rebmann replacing Tiedemann). Finally, two affiliations were listed incorrectly and are corrected here (entries 190 and 193). The author list and affiliations have been amended to address these omissions in both the HTML and PDF versions.

Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes. SAPFLUXNET version 0.1.5 is freely available from the Zenodo repository (10.5281/zenodo.3971689; Poyatos et al., 2020a). The "sapfluxnetr"R package-designed to access, visualize, and process SAPFLUXNET data-is available from CRAN.

Abstract

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-filled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the first time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the first time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. This paper details this enhanced dataset and the processing methods, now made available as open-source codes, making the dataset more accessible, transparent, and reproducible.

7. National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education: An Assessment. White Paper

Abstract

In 2001, the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) was created to "stimulate collaboration between selected liberal arts colleges and to act as a catalyst for the effective integration of emerging and newer digital technologies into teaching, learning, scholarship, and information management." In July 2015, NITLE migrated its operations from Southwestern University to the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). In conjunction with this migration, CLIR initiated a rigorous analysis of NITLE's current condition and the needs of its constituents. CLIR's assessment of NITLE comprises three interrelated activities: (1) composing a history of NITLE and setting it in the larger context of organizations devoted to technology in liberal education; (2) conducting interviews with key stakeholders in NITLE's past, present, and potential future; (3) and designing, administering, and analyzing a survey of current and former NITLE members and interested parties. These activities resulted in a rich, textured picture of the organization and the many ways in which it engaged with its members over the years. Based on the analysis performed for this report, the authors believe that a future organization seeking to serve constituents similar to those served by NITLE should: (1) Maintain a liberal arts college focus; (2) Perform market research to determine how a future organization should support members at the local and/or national level; (3) Clearly articulate the organization's mission, primary audience, and value proposition; (4) Ensure that membership fees are in line with members' perceived return on investment; (5) Develop a culture of ongoing assessment; (6) Regularly communicate with members; and (7) Distinguish the organization from others with similar audience or mission. 8. Exploring Local Level Factors Shaping the Implementation of a Blended Learning Module for Information and Geospatial Literacy in Ontario

Abstract

The objectives of this research study were to examine local level factors shaping the implementation of a blended pedagogical approach for geospatial- and information-literacy, and to understand implementer satisfaction. As such, we addressed the following research questions: What local-level factors shape the implementation of the blended learning model? and How satisfied are implementers (faculty, administrators and library instructional/support staff) with the new blended learning model for geospatial and information fluency? Focus groups (n = 7) plus one interview (total n = 22) were conducted with key stakeholders (e.g., staff, faculty, administrators) to better understand facilitators, barriers, and/or issues related to module development, in addition to perceptions about how the modules are utilized by teaching assistants (TAs), instructional assistants (IAs), and instructors. Participants were identified according to their status as either discipline-specific instructional staff (i.e., instructor, TA, IA) or staff who supported the development of modules (i.e., library instructional staff, library management, administrators). From an ontological standpoint that privileges an individual perspective on the nature of reality, while epistemologically seeking to understand the relationship between the "knower" and what can be known, we adopted a theory of constructivism to support this inquiry. Transcripts were imported into a qualitative analysis software package (NVivo 8.0) for organization, coding and analysis. Instructors found value in the online modules, particularly in a blended learning setting. Instructors felt that having the material in advance, in-class time could be better focused on interaction, assignments, and assessments and resulted in reduced anxiety in busy lab environments. Several key themes emerged, including: (a) instructor expectations (time constraints, sustainability, and collaborative nature of development process) and assessment (student grades and performance); (b) implementation benefits (course content consistency, more lab time devoted to instructor support, provision of additional course resources, and opportunities for student reflection; (c) implementation challenges (inadequate support for information literacy, perceptions of an increase in student workload, and definitional issues surrounding blended learning); (d) course-tailored modules (dichotomy of needs--course tailored vs. generic modules, value in a quiz component, and changing context of lab environment); and (e) key areas for improvement. Focus group respondents illustrated the importance of engaging students in the process of blended learning model development. Future iterations of blended learning modules should explicitly incorporate student feedback through focus groups during their development.

Abstract

Research Data Management (RDM) is a suite of connected processes and practices applied throughout the research lifecycle. It is a critical component of the digital research infrastructure that supports scholarship and innovation within and beyond McMaster University. Applying good RDM practices improves the efficiency and impact of research, increases research visibility, facilitates collaboration, protects intellectual property, enables reuse and verification of research results, and supports a culture of reproducibility. McMaster's Research Data Management (RDM) Strategy outlines how the institution will support its researchers in producing the highest quality research, meeting disciplinary and funder expectations, and leading the adoption of best practices. McMaster commits to providing a researcher-focused and integrated framework of interconnected and complementary guidelines, infrastructure, policies, practices, supports, technologies, tools, training, and services. Our vision is to enable McMaster researchers to adapt and thrive in a research environment that places increasing emphasis on data, its good management, and its reuse. Grounded in an extensive research process and informed by broad engagement and consultation with the institution’s research stakeholder communities, this Strategy has been co-developed by McMaster’s Institutional Strategy Working Group, which operates under the governance of the Research Information Technology Committee (RITC), and comprises representatives from the faculties, research and IT support units, research centres and institutes, and affiliated research hospitals. 11. Social, equitable, collaborative: 10 years of teaching and learning at the Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship

Abstract

In the 10 years since its founding in 2012, the Lewis and Ruth Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship has become a hub through which expertise and resources are shared with the campus community and anyone seeking to do more with digital scholarship. In this chapter, we explore how the centre has leveraged its involvement in teaching and learning to build a community to support the needs of researchers, mentor and develop the talents of emerging scholars, and produce unique programming to make learning about digital scholarship accessible. We share the core values of teaching and learning that guide programming, services, and activities at the centre, prioritizing the social before the technological, striving for equitability of access, and being collaborative by design. The goal of our chapter is to demonstrate how approaching teaching and learning in a way that prioritizes social connections and relationships, a critical engagement with digital technologies, and relational accountability has enabled the centre to iteratively build a reciprocal model of engagement that continues to adapt to the evolving role of digital scholarship in the McMaster community.

The following authors were omitted from the original version of this Data Descriptor: Markus Reichstein and Nicolas Vuichard. Both contributed to the code development and N. Vuichard contributed to the processing of the ERA-Interim data downscaling. Furthermore, the contribution of the co-author Frank Tiedemann was re-evaluated relative to the colleague Corinna Rebmann, both working at the same sites, and based on this re-evaluation a substitution in the co-author list is implemented (with Rebmann replacing Tiedemann). Finally, two affiliations were listed incorrectly and are corrected here (entries 190 and 193). The author list and affiliations have been amended to address these omissions in both the HTML and PDF versions.

Abstract

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-filled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the first time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the first time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. This paper details this enhanced dataset and the processing methods, now made available as open-source codes, making the dataset more accessible, transparent, and reproducible. Ce résumé présente les conclusions du Forum canadien sur la curation de données, un événement national de trois jours tenu en octobre 2019 visant à trouver les obstacles et les défis ressentis dans le travail de curation et à articuler la manière dont une approche nationale de curation de données au Canada pourrait surmonter ces défis. Abstract

This report summarizes the outcomes of the Canadian Data Curation Forum, a national, three-day event held in October of 2019 to identify perceived barriers and challenges to curation work, and to articulate how a national approach to data curation in Canada could address these challenges. Next steps for the development of a national curation service are outlined in the report, and include engagement with researchers, data producers, and other stakeholders to ensure the development of services that are relevant to their needs; investment in infrastructure, including the ‘human layer’ required for curation; strengthening a curation community of practice; and support for services and resources that will facilitate growth in curation capacity at the local level., Supported by funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, McMaster University Library, and Canadian Association of Research Libraries' (CARL) Portage Network.

As more scholars incorporate social media data into their research, technical knowledge to acquire and analyze data is necessary, but so too is an understanding of the norms and values embedded within data protocols and practices. What are the ethical complexities of incorporating ‘public’ social media data into research? And what challenges do researchers face when working with social media platforms as sources of evidence and as objects of research? The aim of the workshop is two-fold: 1) we will discuss some of the practical and philosophical questions pertaining to social media data and research ethics; and, 2) we will spend time reviewing the DMP Assistant.

Data curation is an iterative process that adds value to scholarship by optimizing research datasets for current use, as well as future discovery and reuse. Moreover, it ensures that datasets developed and archived by researchers epitomize the FAIR guiding principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (Wilkinson et al., 2016). In order to meet these aspirations, data curators require a unique complement of disciplinary knowledge, information management skills, and software expertise. While advances are being made in automating data curation processes, the heterogeneous and multidisciplinary nature of research data commonly requires human curators to define FAIR standards for datasets and collaborate with researchers to realize them. Given that individual curators within research groups, organizations, and institutions are unlikely to possess all of the required skills and expertise, there is a significant need for training opportunities that expand their capabilities, and for higher-level coordination that standardizes practices across organizations. To address this need, McMaster University, in partnership with the Canadian Association of Research Libraries’ Portage Network and the Portage Network Curation Expert Group (CEG) (Portage Network, 2019), organized the first Canadian Research Data Curation Forum to promote and advance the practice of data curation in Canada. The event took place in Hamilton, Ontario from Oct. 16-18, 2019. The main goals of this event were to provide (1) a community-building stakeholder forum to better understand the current state and unmet needs of data curation practice in Canada, (2) professional development for data curators, and (3) a clear articulation of the next steps for the development of this profession in Canada.
