The black hole candidate, XTE J1752-223, was discovered in 2009 October when it entered an outburst. We obtained radio data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array for the duration of the ~9 month event. The lightcurves show that the radio emission from the compact jet persisted for the duration of an extended hard state and through the transition to the intermediate state. The flux then rose rapidly by a factor of 10 and the radio source entered a series of at least 7 maxima, the first of which was likely to be emission associated with the compact jet. The subsequent 6 flares were accompanied by variable behaviour in terms of radio spectrum, degree of linear polarisation, morphology and associated X-ray behaviour. They were, however, remarkably similar in terms of the estimated minimum power required to launch such an ejection event. We compare the timing of radio peaks with the location of the ejecta, imaged by contemporaneous VLBI experiments. We then discuss the mechanism behind the events, in terms of whether discrete ejections is the most likely description of the behaviour. One ejection, at least, appears to be travelling with apparent superluminal motion. The range of properties, however, suggests that mutiple mechanisms may be relevant and that at least some of the emission is coming from shocked interactions amongst the ejecta and between the ejecta and the interstellar medium. We also compare the radio flux density with the X-ray source during the hard state and conclude that XTE J1752-223 is a radio-weak/X-ray-bright outlier on the universal correlation for black hole transient sources., Comment: 14 pages; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Double-double radio galaxies (DDRGs) offer a unique opportunity for us to study multiple episodes of jet activity in large-scale radio sources. We use radio data from the Very Large Array and the literature to model two DDRGs, B1450+333 and B1834+620, in terms of their dynamical evolution. We find that the standard Fanaroff-Riley II model is able to explain the properties of the two outer lobes of each source, whereby the lobes are formed by ram-pressure balance of a shock at the end of the jet with the surrounding medium. The inner pairs of lobes, however, are not well-described by the standard model. Instead we interpret the inner lobes as arising from the emission of relativistic electrons within the outer lobes, which are compressed and re-accelerated by the bow-shock in front of the restarted jets and within the outer lobes. The predicted rapid progression of the inner lobes through the outer lobes requires the eventual development of a hotspot at the edge of the outer lobe, causing the DDRG ultimately to resemble a standard Fanaroff-Riley II radio galaxy. Jets from X-ray binaries are continuously injecting matter and energy into the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). However, there exist to date relatively few cases where jet-ISM interactions have been directly observed. We review the current examples, and go on to present new data on the proposed hotspots of GRS1915+105, finding no concrete evidence for any association between the hotspots and the central source, in agreement with previous findings in the literature. Unipolar induction (UI) is a fundamental physical process, which occurs when a conducting body transverses a magnetic field. It has been suggested that UI is operating in RX J0806+15 and RX J1914+24, which are believed to be ultra-compact binaries with orbital periods of 5.4 min and 9.6 min respectively. The UI model predicts that those two sources may be electron cyclotron maser sources at radio wavelengths. Other systems in which UI has been predicted to occur are short period extra-solar terrestrial planets with conducting cores. If UI is present, circularly polarised radio emission is predicted to be emitted. We have searched for this predicted radio emission from short period binaries using the VLA and ATCA. In one epoch we find evidence for a radio source, coincident in position with the optical position of RX J0806+15. Although we cannot completely exclude that this is a chance alignment between the position of RX J0806+15 and an artifact in the data reduction process, the fact that it was detected at a significance level of 5.8 sigma and found to be transient, suggests that it is more likely that RX J0806+15 is a transient radio source. We find an upper limit on the degree of circular polarisation to be ~50%. The inferred brightness temperature exceeds 10^18 K, which is too high for any known incoherent process, but is consistent with maser emission and UI being the driving mechanism. XTE J1748-288 is a black hole X-ray transient which went into outburst in 1998 June. The X-ray lightcurves showed canonical morphologies, with minor variations on the ``Fast Rise Exponential Decay'' profile. The radio source, however, reached an unusually high flux density of over 600 mJy. This high radio flux was accompanied by an exceptional (>20%) fractional linear polarisation, the variability of which was anti-correlated with the flux density. We use this variability to discuss possible depolarisation mechanisms and to predict the underlying behaviour of the (unresolved) core/jet components., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the results of a series of RXTE and ATCA observations of the recently-discovered X-ray transient IGR J17497-2821. Our 3-200 keV PCA+HEXTE spectral analysis shows very little variations over a period of ~10 days around the maximum of the outburst. IGR J17497-2821 is found in a typical Low Hard State (LHS) of X-ray binaries (XRB), well represented by an absorbed Comptonized spectrum with an iron edge at about 7 keV. The high value of the absorption (~4 e22 cm-2) suggests that the source is located at a large distance, either close to the Galactic center or beyond. The timing analysis shows no particular features, while the shape of the power density spectra is also typical of LHS of XRBs, with ~36% RMS variability. No radio counterpart is found down to a limit of 0.21 mJy at 4.80 GHz and 8.64 GHz. Although the position of IGR J17497-2821 in the radio to X-ray flux diagram is well below the correlation usually observed in the LHS of black holes, the comparison of its X-ray properties with those of other sources leads us to suggest that it is a black hole candidate., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

The large mechanical luminosity of the jets of GRS 1915+105 should give rise to luminous emission regions, similar to those observed in radio galaxies, where the jets interact with the gas surrounding the source. However, no radio synchrotron emission of the expected morphology has been found. Here we present the results of a study suggesting that radio bremsstrahlung from the compressed and heated ISM in front of the jets should be detectable, while the synchrotron lobes may be too faint. We identify these jet impact sites with two well-known IRAS regions. This identification suggests a distance of GRS 1915+105 of $6.5\pm1.6$ kpc, significantly closer than the usually assumed distance of 11 to 12 kpc. We discuss the implications of this reduced distance estimate. The apparent motion of small-scale jet components is not superluminal, so if superluminal motion is required for an object to be termed a microquasar, GRS 1915+105 actually does not qualify. The jets of GRS 1915+105 carry a considerable energy away from the central source into the ISM. The similarity of the jets of this source and jets in radio galaxies or radio-loud quasars suggests that we should detect large-scale, synchrotron emitting radio structures surrounding GRS 1915+105. However, these large structures have not been found. We show that by adapting a model for the radio lobes of extragalatic jet sources we predict a radio surface brightness of the equivalent structures of GRS 1915+105 below the current detection limits. The model uses an energy transport rate of the jets averaged over the jet lifetime. This transport rate is found to be considerably lower than the power of the jets during the rare major ejection events. Thus the lobes contain less energy than would be inferred from these events and produce a lower radio luminosity. The model also predicts a lifetime of the jets of order $10^6$ years and a gas density of the ISM in the vicinity of GRS 1915+105 of $\sim 150$ cm$^{-3}$. The impact sites of the jets are identified with two {\sc iras} regions with a flat radio spectrum located on either side of GRS 1915+105. Observations of molecular lines and dust emission from these objects are consistent with our interpretation. Distance estimates for the {\sc iras} regions give 6.5 kpc and our model implies that this is also the distance to GRS 1915+105. This low distance estimate in combination with the observed motions of jet ejections on small scales yields a jet velocity of about 0.7 c and an angle of $53^{\circ}$ of the jets to our line of sight., Comment: replaced with shorter (10 pages) emulateapj version
