Abstract

Agroecology uses ecological processes and local resources rather than chemical inputs to develop productive and resilient livestock and crop production systems. In this context, breeding innovations are necessary to obtain animals that are both productive and adapted to a broad range of local contexts and diversity of systems. Breeding strategies to promote agroecological systems are similar for different animal species. However, current practices differ regarding the breeding of ruminants, pigs and poultry. Ruminant breeding is still an open system where farmers continue to choose their own breeds and strategies. Conversely, pig and poultry breeding is more or less the exclusive domain of international breeding companies which supply farmers with hybrid animals. Innovations in breeding strategies must therefore be adapted to the different species. In developed countries, reorienting current breeding programmes seems to be more effective than developing programmes dedicated to agroecological systems that will struggle to be really effective because of the small size of the populations currently concerned by such systems. Particular attention needs to be paid to determining the respective usefulness of cross-breeding v. straight breeding strategies of well-adapted local breeds. While cross-breeding may offer some immediate benefits in terms of improving certain traits that enable the animals to adapt well to local environmental conditions, it may be difficult to sustain these benefits in the longer term and could also induce an important loss of genetic diversity if the initial pure-bred populations are no longer produced. As well as supporting the value of within-breed diversity, we must preserve between-breed diversity in order to maintain numerous options for adaptation to a variety of production environments and contexts. Abstract

Agroecology uses natural processes and local resources rather than chemical inputs to ensure production while limiting the environmental footprint of livestock and crop production systems. Selecting to achieve a maximization of target production criteria has long proved detrimental to fitness traits. However, since the 1990s, developments in animal breeding have also focussed on animal robustness by balancing production and functional traits within overall breeding goals. We discuss here how an agroecological perspective should further shift breeding goals towards functional traits rather than production traits. Breeding for robustness aims to promote individual adaptive capacities by considering diverse selection criteria which include reproduction, animal health and welfare, and adaptation to rough feed resources, a warm climate or fluctuating environmental conditions. It requires the consideration of genotype×environment interactions in the prediction of breeding values. Animal performance must be evaluated in low-input systems in order to select those animals that are adapted to limiting conditions, including feed and water availability, climate variations and diseases. Finally, we argue that there is no single agroecological animal type, but animals with a variety of profiles that can meet the expectations of agroecology. The standardization of both animals and breeding conditions indeed appears contradictory to the agroecological paradigm that calls for an adaptation of animals to local opportunities and constraints in weakly artificialized systems tied to their physical environment.

Abstract

Cette étude présente les principaux résultats d’estimation de paramètres génétiques et de détection de QTL obtenus dans le cadre du projet PhenoFinlaitsur les caractères de composition en acides gras (AG) du lait dans les trois races bovines Holstein, Montbéliarde et Normande. Les paramètres génétiques sont estimés à partir de 101 858 contrôles élémentaires de 21 947 vaches en première lactation. Chaque contrôle est caractérisé par son profil en AG, estimé par spectrométrie moyen infra rouge. Les paramètres génétiques dépendent beaucoup du mode d’expression des caractères : acides gras exprimés en proportion du lait ou de la matière grasse. Exprimés en teneur dans le lait, les AG saturés (SAT) présentent une héritabilité plus élevée que les insaturés (INSAT) mais l’écart est plus faible quand ils sont exprimés en pourcentage d’AG totaux. Les mesures d’AG sont fortement corrélées entre stades de lactation, à l’exception du premier mois qui apparait comme un caractère assez différent. Les corrélations génétiques sont positives entre SAT, positives entre INSAT. Entre SAT et INSAT, le signe des corrélations diffère selon le mode d’expression. Les SAT sont très fortement corrélés au taux butyreux du lait. 7500 vaches ont été génotypées avec la puce SNP Bovine 50k Beadchip et 500 autres ont été imputées depuis un génotypage sur la puce SNP bovine 7k, permettant une recherche de QTL par LDLA (analyse combinant liaison intra famille et déséquilibre de liaison). Au total, sur 31 caractères, 544 QTL ont été détectés dans l’ensemble des trois races, soit environ 9 par caractère et par race. Les QTL les plus importants ont été trouvés sur les chromosomes 14 (gène DGAT1), 26 (gène SCD), 13, 16, 17, 19 et 27. Les QTL les plus significatifs sont observés sur le chromosome 5 dans les 3 races, une région non décrite jusqu’à présent. On observe une forte colocalisation de QTL entre caractères, en particulier entre acides gras du même type, reflétant leur origine métabolique commune. Une fraction notable, au moins un tiers, de ces QTL semble partagée entre races. Ces résultats favorables ouvrent la voie à la prise en compte du profil en AG en sélection mais aussi à la recherche des mutations responsables de ces variations., This study presents the main genetic results obtained in the PhenoFinlait projects with regards to genetic parameters and QTL detection for milk composition in fatty acids (FA) in the French Montbeliarde (MO), Normande (NO) and Holstein (HO) cattle breeds. Expressed in % of milk, test-day saturated FA (SAT) had higher heritability estimates than unsaturated FA (UNSAT) but this difference was smaller when the traits were in % of fat. FA measurements were highly genetically correlated across different stages of lactation except in the beginning of lactation. Genetic correlations between FA in milk were positive across SAT, and also positive across UNSAT. Between SAT and UNSAT, their sign changed according to the mode of expression. SAT were strongly and positively correlated to fat content in milk. Seven-thousand five-hundred cows were genotyped with the Bovine 50k Beadchip and 500 other cow genotypes were imputed from their Bovine LD Beadchip (7k). A QTL detection analysis was carried out by Linkage and Linkage Disequilibrium Analysis (LDLA). For 31 traits, 544 QTL were detected in the three breeds, corresponding to an average of 9 per trait and breed. The most important QTL were found on chromosomes 14 (DGAT1 gene), 26 (SCD gene), 13, 16, 17,19 and 27. The most significant QTL were found on chromosome 5, a region not yet described until now. QTL often colocalized across traits, especially for fatty acids of the same type, reflecting their common metabolic origin. A relatively high fraction of the QTL, more than one third, was found to be shared across breeds. These results pave the way for including FA in selection and also for the discovery of the underlying causative mutations.

Abstract

Genetic parameters of milk composition in fatty acids (FA) were estimated in the three French Montbeliarde (MO), Normande (NO) and Holstein (HO) cattle breeds. Data originated from the PhénoFinlait project and from the national genetic database. They contained 101,858 test-day records from 21,947 cows in first lactation. Each test-day was characterized by its profile in FA in milk, as estimated from Mid-Infrared (MIR) spectrometry. Three different models were used to analyze either individual test-day data, or lactation means. Test-day saturated FA (SAT) had higher heritability estimates (from 0.16 to 0.44) than unsaturated FA (UNSAT). FA measurements were highly genetically correlated across different stages of lactation except in the beginning of the lactation. Genetic correlations between FA in milk were positive across SAT, also positive across UNSAT, and negative between SAT and UNSAT. SAT were positively correlated to fat content in milk. The definition of the traits, expressed in percentage of milk or fat, was discussed.

Abstract

National audience; Studies carried out since 1993 on scrapie infected flocks, have allowed to describe the frequency of susceptible alleles of the PrP gene in French dairy sheep breeds, to verify the greater risk of susceptible animals, and to test the selection feasibility and efficiency based on PrP genotyping. The idea of using a genetic strategy to eradicate scrapie in infected flocks was born as a result. Since 2002, the programme to eradicate scrapie in French sheep livestock, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, is rooted in a genetic strategy based on the genotyping of the PrP gene : its objective is aimed both at eradicating scrapie in infected flocks and reinforcing the resistance of the entire national flock. The fact that it was launched within the framework of the livestock selection organisation, defined in 1966 by a French law, is obviously a key point to explain its efficient and rapid implementation from the starting year. Moreover, it illustrates the mobilisation of all the people in charge of the sheep breeding programmes in France : the jointed evolutions observed for the ARR allelic frequency, the genetic merit for production traits and the maintenance of criteria describing the genetic variability are evidence of a good application of the objectives defined for the breeding programmes. The national supervision, carried out by INRA, the Institut de l’Elevage and France UPRa selection, will set out, in the next years, to reach all the objectives of this national programme, particularly by supplying scrapie infected flocks with resistant sheep, managing the genetic variability of the selection flocks and diffusing resistant germplasm towards the commercial flocks. This plan is based on the following crucial points : resistance of ARR/ARR is universal to natural infections and ARR/ARR sheep are not healthy carriers. It will be necessary to always check these crucial points and include any new scientific knowledge in the breeding programmes.; Les travaux conduits en ovins laitiers dès 1993 dans des élevages ovins atteints de tremblante ont permis de connaître la fréquence des allèles sensibles du gène PrP selon les races considérées, vérifier le risque accru de tremblante pour ces génotypes, et tester la faisabilité d’une sélection sur le gène PrP et son efficacité sur le risque de tremblante dans les troupeaux. Ils ont ainsi contribué à l’émergence de l’outil génétique pour éradiquer la tremblante dans les élevages atteints. Depuis 2002, le programme d’éradication de la tremblante mis en place en France par le Ministère de l’Agriculture, est fondé sur le génotypage du gène PrP : il vise à éradiquer à court et moyen terme la tremblante dans les élevages atteints, tout en renforçant la résistance génétique à moyen et long terme de l’ensemble du cheptel national, compte tenu des délais de renouvellement des cheptels femelles. Avoir choisi d’asseoir le programme national de sélection sur le dispositif existant d’amélioration génétique du cheptel national, organisé dans le cadre de la loi de l’Elevage de 1966, est manifestement un point clé pour expliquer la mise en oeuvre rapide et efficace du programme dès la première année, confirmant la mobilisation massive de tous les maîtres d’oeuvre des schémas de sélection des ovins en France : les évolutions conjointes constatées pour les fréquences alléliques en faveur de l’allèle ARR, les index de sélection pour les caractères de production et les indicateurs de gestion de la variabilité génétique sont une bonne illustration de l’application des objectifs assignés aux programmes de sélection. L’encadrement national, conduit par l’INRA, l’Institut de l’Elevage et France UPRa Sélection (Unité de Promotion et de sélection de Race), s’attachera, dans les prochaines années, à vérifier et à aider à la mise en oeuvre des quatre objectifs du programme national de sélection, en particulier la fourniture de reproducteurs résistants pour les élevages atteints, la gestion de la variabilité génétique dans les noyaux de sélection et la diffusion vers les élevages de production. Ce programme repose sur les points clés d’universalité de la résistance génétique à la tremblante en situation de contamination naturelle et d’absence de porteurs sains, qu’il faudra en permanence continuer de valider.

Abstract

4 patients with solid genitourinary tumors and HIV1 infection have been treated in our institution over the last 2 years. Two patients had seminoma, 1 renal adenocarcinoma and 1 renal angiosarcoma. All had deeply impaired immunity with a low CD4 level. 3 had or developed a true AIDS syndrome according to the WHO and CDC criterias of 1988. The remaining patient was seropositive and died less than 3 months following the diagnosis of renal angiosarcoma. He is the first reported case of renal sarcoma in a patient infected with HIV1. 2 patients were homosexuals, and the 2 others were drug addicts. Along with other reported cases, our cases underline the association between the depression of immunity due to HIV and the onset of solid genitourinary tumors.

A three-year research (1993-95) of maize in Eastern Croatia indicated major differences in weed composition and weed infestation values depending on soil type, climatic conditions and seasonal aspects. On untreated controls, the dominant species on eutric cambisol (Sorghum halepense, Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Echinochloa crus galli) had higher infestation levels during the season, relative to main weed species on lessive pseudogleic (Amaranthus retroflexus) and lessive soil type (Polygonum lapathifolium). The application of different weed control (two hoeings ; metolachlor + atrazine mixture broadcast application ; metolachlor + atrazine mixture band spraying and rimsulfuron single application) gave 96%, 93%, 79% and 93% weed control. In the same variants the yield of female inbred maize lines was increased 130% 123%, 65% and 92%.

The aim of the two year (1997-98) comparative field study on lessive pseudogleic soil in Eastern Croatia was determine the efficacy of nine herbicides and their combinations without or with a low rate of atrazine on dominant weed (Echinochloa crus galli, Chenopodium album, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Equisetum arvense, Calystegia sepium). The heaviest infestation was by E. crus galli (484 shoots/m2). The best total weed control effect was obtained by the sulcotrione+bromoxynil tank mixture (99.4% control), followed by sulfonylurea herbicide combinatios plus Trend 90 surfactant: 50% prosulfuron & 30% primisulfuron + nicosulfuron (96.4%) ; thifensulfuron + nicosufuron (95.3%) and rimsulfuron + 50% prosulfuron & 30% primisulfuron (93.9% control).
