Abstract

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion.

20. NDVI Prediction of Mediterranean Permanent Grasslands Using Soil Moisture Products.

Abstract

Vegetation indices are widely used to assess vegetation dynamics. The Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the most widely used metric in agriculture, frequently as a proxy for different physiological and agronomical aspects, such as crop yield or biomass, crop density, or drought stress. Much effort has therefore been directed to NDVI forecasting, which is usually correlated with precipitation. However, in Mediterranean and arid climates, the relationship is more complex due to prolonged dry periods and sparse precipitation events. In this study, we forecast the NDVI 7 and 30 days ahead for Mediterranean permanent grasslands using a machine learning Random Forest (RF) model for the period from 2015 to 2022. The model compares two soil moisture products as predictors: simulated soil moisture values based on in situ soil moisture sensor observations and remote sensing-derived observations of Soil Water Index (SWI) values. We further analyzed the anomalies of the predicted NDVI using the z-score. The results show that both products can be used as reliable predictors for permanent grasslands in Mediterranean areas. Predictions at 7 days are more accurate and better forecast the negative effect of drought on vegetation dynamics than those at 30 days. This study shows the potential of using a simple methodology and readily available data to predict the grassland growth dynamics in the Mediterranean area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. An inter-comparison of approaches and frameworks to quantify irrigation from satellite data

Abstract

This study provides the first inter-comparison of different state-of-the-art approaches and frameworks that share a commonality in their utilization of satellite remote-sensing data to quantify irrigation at a regional scale. The compared approaches vary in their reliance on either soil moisture or evapotranspiration data or their joint utilization of both. The two compared frameworks either extract irrigation information from residuals between satellite observations and rainfed hydrological models in a baseline framework or use soil water balance modeling in a soil-moisture-based inversion framework. The inter-comparison is conducted over the lower Ebro catchment in Spain where observed irrigation amounts are available for benchmarking. Our results showed that within the baseline framework, the joint approach using both soil moisture and evapotranspiration (ET) remote-sensing data only differed by +37mm from the irrigation benchmark (922mm) during the main irrigation season over 2 years and by +47 and -208mm for approaches relying solely on soil moisture and ET, respectively. A comparison of the different frameworks showed that the main advantage of the more complex baseline framework was the consistency between soil moisture and ET components within the hydrological model, which made it unlikely that either one ended up representing all irrigation water use. However, the simplicity of the soil-moisture-based inversion framework, coupled with its direct conversion of soil moisture changes into actual water volumes, effectively addresses the key challenges inherent in the baseline framework, which are associated with uncertainties related to an unknown remote-sensing observation depth and the static depth of the soil layers in a conceptual model. Abstract

The roadmap to enable operational soil moisture (SM) monitoring for meteorologic and hydrological early warning is challenged by the uncertainty within the available remote sensing and modelling products. This study addressed two relevant uncertainties: the residual trends in the series and the spatial consistency. While the latter has been often revisited to validate remote sensing and modelling products against in-situ data, the former is often disregarded in studies addressing SM changes. This study evaluated three SM products: (1) the Satellite Application Facility on Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management (H SAF) active Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT)-derived dataset, (2) the passive subset of the European Space Agency (ESA) - Climate Change Initiative (CCIp), and (3) the modelled dataset from the European Drought Observatory (EDO). The analysis was carried out over Europe in the period 2007–2022 at 10-day temporal scales. We obtained that even these popular datasets are subject to patches of spatial inconsistency and residual trends when compared to the in-situ data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). In view of the great complementarity shown by the active and passive remote sensing and the modelled SM estimates, two merged products are proposed and tested against in-situ data. Results indicate that combining H SAF ASCAT, CCIp and EDO equals or surpasses the spatial and temporal consistency of the individual SM products alone, even when only the near-real-time products of H SAF ASCAT and EDO are combined. Thus, merging remote sensing and modelled SM products is advantageous for enhanced spatial and temporal operational monitoring of SM at the European scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Irrigation is the main driver of crop production in many agricultural regions across the world. The estimation of irrigation water has the potential to enhance our comprehension of the Earth system, thus providing crucial data for food production. In this study, we have created a unique operational system for estimating irrigation water using data from satellite soil moisture, reanalysis precipitation, and potential evaporation. As a proof of concept, we implemented the method at a high resolution (1 km) during the period of 2015–2023 over the area south of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine, which collapsed on 6 June 2023. The selected study area enabled us to showcase that our operational system is able to track the effect of the pandemic and conflict on the irrigation water supply. Significant decreases of 63 % and 44 % in irrigation water compared to the mean irrigation water between 2015 and 2023 have been identified as being linked to the collapse of the dam and, potentially, to the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively.
