The ability to analyse aspects of visual culture--works of art, maps or plans, graphs, tables and X-rays--quickly and efficiently is critical in decision-making in a broad range of disciplines. Eye tracking is a technology that can record how long someone dwells on a particular detail in an image, where the eye moves from one part of the image to the other, and the sequence the viewer uses to interpret visual information. These MP4 recordings can be played back and graphically enhanced with coloured dots and lines to point out this natural and fluent eye behaviour to learners. These recordings can form effective pedagogical tools for learning how to look at images through the eyes of experts by mimicking the patterns and rhythms of expert eye behaviour. This paper provides a meta-analysis of studies of this kind and also provides the results of a cross-disciplinary project which involved five different subject areas. The consensus arising from our meta-analysis reveals an emerging field with broad concerns in need of more integrated research. None of the studies cited in this article are interdisciplinary across the sciences and arts and, while some of them address higher education in medicine and computing, there are no interdisciplinary studies of how eye tracking is important for teaching in arts and science subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition, none of the studies address how learning practitioners find these eye recordings useful for their own understanding of learning processes. This establishes the unique contribution of this project.

Cardiac inherited diseases can have considerable psychosocial effects, including lifestyle limitations, anxiety and depression. Most research to date on patient experiences of CID has been conducted with people from Western cultures, yet culture can shape patient views and experiences of health. The aim of this research was to explore the experiences and perspectives of Māori and Pasifika living with a cardiac inherited disease (CID). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 Māori and 14 Pasifika patients living with a cardiac inherited disease and seven of their family members, using Talanoa and Kaupapa Māori methodologies. Themes from the interviews were identified using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three common themes were identified as important in shaping participants' perceptions and experiences of CID: (1) difficulty in understanding the disease as separate from symptoms, (2) considering ancestors and future generations and (3) the role of spirituality and religion. This study highlights a gap between indigenous patients' understanding of CID and the western biomedical approach. Patients' understanding and treatment behaviours depend on symptoms, familial ties and spirituality. The findings support the need for transparency and culturally appropriate practices in healthcare. ContextSickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia are rare but chronic blood disorders. Recent literature showed impaired quality of life (QOL) in people with these blood disorders. Assessing one of the determinants of QOL (i.e. illness perceptions) therefore, is an important next research area.ObjectiveWe aimed to explore illness perceptions of people with a blood disorder with drawings in addition to the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (Brief IPQ). Drawings are a novel method to assess illness perceptions and the free-range answers drawings offer can add additional insight into how people perceive their illness.MethodWe conducted a cross-sectional study including 17 participants with a blood disorder. Participants' illness perceptions were assessed by the Brief IPQ and drawings. Brief IPQ scores were compared with reference groups from the literature (i.e. people with asthma or lupus erythematosus).ResultsParticipants with SCD or thalassemia perceived their blood disorder as being more chronic and reported more severe symptoms than people with either asthma or lupus erythematosus. Research has shown that the composition of breath can differ based on the human's behavioral patterns and mental and physical states immediately before being collected. These breath-collection techniques have also been extended to observe the general processes occurring in groups of humans and can link them to what those groups are collectively experiencing. In this research, we applied machine learning techniques to the breath data collected from cinema audiences. These techniques included XGBOOST Regression, Hierarchical Clustering, and Item Basket analyses created using the Apriori algorithm. They were conducted to find associations between the biomarkers in the crowd's breath and the movie's audio-visual stimuli and thematic events. This analysis enabled us to directly link what the group was experiencing and their biological response to that experience. We first extracted visual and auditory features from a movie to achieve this. We compared it to the biomarkers in the crowd's breath using regression and pattern mining techniques. Our results supported the theory that a crowd's collective experience directly correlates to the biomarkers in the crowd's breath. Consequently, these findings suggest that visual and auditory experiences have predictable effects on the human body that can be monitored without requiring expensive or invasive neuroimaging techniques. It is now common to see pedestrians looking at their mobile phones while they are walking. Looking at a mobile phone can cause stooped posture, slower gait, and lack of attention to surroundings. Because these walking characteristics have been associated with negative affect, walking while looking at a mobile phone may have negative effects on mood. This study aimed to investigate whether walking while looking at a mobile phone had psychological effects. One hundred and twenty-five adults were randomised to walk in a park either with or without reading text on a mobile phone. Participants wore a fitness tracker to record pace and heart rate, and posture was calculated from video. Self-reported mood, affect, feelings of power, comfort, and connectedness with nature were assessed. The phone group walked significantly slower, with a more stooped posture, slower heart rate, and felt less comfortable than the phone-free group. The phone group experienced significant decreases in positive mood, affect, power, and connectedness with nature, as well as increases in negative mood, whereas the phone-free group experienced the opposite. There was no significant mediation effect of posture on mood; however, feeling connected with nature significantly mediated the effects of phone walking on mood. In conclusion, individuals experience better wellbeing when they pay attention to the environment rather than their phone while walking. More research is needed to investigate the effects of performing other activities on a mobile phone on mood while walking and in other settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
