Abstract

The wide application of screening mammography has led to an increase in diagnosis of non palpable breast lesions (NPBL), representing nowadays 20% of all malignant breast tumors. The finding of a NPBL represents a clinical problem that involves the competences of different specialists as radiologist, pathologist and surgeon. The present study analyses a series of 167 patients observed during the last twelve years at the Surgical Clinic of the University of Trieste. Diagnosis was made in 83.3% of cases in screening programs and in remaining patients with risk factors. One-hundred and twenty-one patients (72.46%) underwent ultrasound. Seventy-seven cases underwent FNAB. All the patients underwent excisional biopsy after surgical needle localization under X-ray or ultrasound guidance. Histological examination was performed intraoperatively on frozen sections only in the first years; now we performed always a postoperative histological examination in microcalcifications and in lesions

An autofluorescence analysis has been performed on healthy as well as tumour thyroid tissue samples to distinguish follicular cancer from normal thyroid. Complete spectra and synchronous spectra have been recordered from properly stored samples. Fluorescence bands located at 350 nm and 400 nm has been observed in the analysed cancer samples.

Abstract

il saggio analizza il rapporto tra leader e masse nei fascismi valutando il ruolo giocato da tematiche populiste nelle oratorie dei due capi di fascismo e nazionalsocialismo. Le ragioni alla base di una siffatta problematica di ricerca sono da ricondurre a fattori esterni ed interni alla storiografia. Negli ultimi anni l’interesse per il populismo come fenomeno politico è andato crescendo di pari passo con la diffusione di questi movimenti all’interno di una crisi dei sistemi democratici così come si erano costituiti dopo la fine della seconda guerra mondiale. Prendendo le mosse da queste premesse, questo saggio si allontana però dalla contemporaneità per esaminare gli elementi populistici presenti nel rapporto tra leader e masse nel fascismo italiano e nel nazionalsocialismo tedesco come prima esplorazione per una comparazione di più ampio respiro.

Abstract

Polyaniline (PANI) is an electro-active polymer of great interest thanks to its outstanding physical and chemical properties which make it suitable for various applications in optics, bioelectronics, biosensors, diagnostics and therapeutic devices. Unfortunately, PANI is infusible and insoluble in most common solvents and, thus, very difficult to process. In the attempt of improving processability, yet preserving its interesting properties, PANI has been synthesized in the form of particles and dispersed into a hydrogel matrix. The synthesis of PANI–hydrogel composites proceeds via γ-irradiation of PANI dispersions as obtained by ‘in situ’ polymerization of aniline in the presence of water-soluble, polymeric stabilizers. The chosen stabilizers are able to undergo to chemical cross-linking when exposed to ionizing radiations, so forming the highly hydrophilic network that entrap PANI particles. The presence of a hydrogel matrix induces biocompatibility to the final composite material which, in a typical bottom-up approach, may become suitable for the development of biocompatible, optoelectronic devices. Some morphological and optical features of these novel soft, functional nano-composites are here presented.

Abstract

The main purpose of the SYRMEP (SYnchrotron Radiation for MEdical Physics) research team is the investigation and development of innovative techniques for medical imaging. A dedicated beamline has been built at ELETTRA to evaluate the effectiveness of synchrotron-based techniques in medical radiology with particular interest to mammography, and more in general, to the imaging of biological and biomedical samples, either in planar or tomographic set-ups. Taking advantage of the high intensity and high spatial coherence of Synchrotron Radiation (SR), phase sensitive techniques such as Phase Contrast (PhC) and Diffraction Enhanced Imaging (DEI) can be applied. After successful studies carried out on test objects and in vitro samples, the research in mammography is aiming at in vivo clinical trials. For this purpose, the layout of the SYRMEP beamline has been substantially modified and the safety system has been completely redesigned to guarantee the compliance with current radiation protection guidelines. In the present paper, the main characteristics of the beamline and an overview of the results obtained in different contexts of biomedical imaging are presented. Moreover, the status of the project for clinical mammography is outlined.

Abstract

Background: Ritonavir-boosted nirmatrelvir (N/r) is an antiviral which targets the main viral protease, administered to prevent the progression of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients at high risk for severe COVID-19. We present a real-life case-control study evaluating the efficacy of N/r therapy in SARS-CoV-2 omicron variants positive outpatients in Campania region, Italy, with the aim of assessing the occurrence of three outcomes (hospital admission, admission in ICU and death) in cases and controls., Methods: We enrolled SARS-CoV-2 positive subjects that came to our attention in Early antiviral treatment ambulatory of Infectious Diseases ward of University Federico II of Naples, Italy from January 1st, 2022, to December 31st, 2022, during the first five days from symptoms occurrence. Patients were enrolled as cases or controls if they were treated with N/r or not treated at all, respectively., Results: 1064 patients were included (cases: 423, controls: 1184). Cases showed a lower mortality compared with controls while no differences were observed for other outcomes. Vaccinated patients showed a lower mortality compared with non-vaccinated ones (0.5% vs. 7.8%, p < 0.001). After full-matching propensity score, N/r reduced hospitalization rate only in unvaccinated patients. In contrast N/r significantly reduced mortality regardless of vaccination status., Conclusions: Treatment with N/r has proven effective in reducing mortality among outpatients with SARS-CoV-2 infection during several omicron variant surges. The beneficial effect of N/r treatment in reducing progression is more pronounced in unvaccinated patients., Competing Interests: Declarations.
