Abstract

Altitude training is a common practice among middle-distance and marathon runners. During acclimatization, sympathetic drive may increase resting metabolic rate (RMR), therefore implementation of targeted nutritional interventions based on training demands and environmental conditions becomes paramount. This single case study represents the first nutritional intervention performed under hypobaric hypoxic conditions (3900 m) in Paralympic sport. These results may elucidate the unique nutritional requirements of upper body endurance athletes training at altitude.

Abstract

Studies on the effects of exercise training in persons with cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) are scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an 8-week stationary arm-crank exercise (ACE) training programme on the level of autonomy, exercise performance, pulmonary functional parameters and resting heart rate variability (HRV) in persons with CSCI. Quadriplegia Index of Function (QIF), arm-crank peak power output (Ppeak), spirometric variables, and HRV indices were measured before and after the training programme in a group of 11 persons with CSCI. ACE training increased Ppeak in both groups (p < 0.05), whereas maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) and low frequency HRV (LF) improved only in the lower CSCI group (p < 0.05). Moreover, QIF and Ppeak were significantly correlated before (r = 0.88; p < 0.01) and after (r = 0.86; p < 0.01) the training period. However, no significant changes were found in the level of autonomy (QIF) as a result of the intervention. Therefore, stationary ACE training appears to be a feasible and effective method for aerobic exercise in persons with tetraplegia and a short-term intervention is able to significantly improve exercise capacity, cardiac autonomic regulation and respiratory muscle endurance, regardless of the absence of significant immediate changes in the level of autonomy. 41. Microstructural evolution of a modified HP alloy: experimental and complementary computational study

Abstract

In this work is presented results of the microstructural characterization of austenitic stainless steel (HP series) modified with Nb, aged at temperatures of 750, 800, 850, 900 and 950oC in air at different times. Microstructural changes were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with (EDS), x-ray diffraction and Vickers hardness. In the as-cast condition, the microstructure consists of an austenitic matrix and eutectic carbides network, Cr, Nb-rich carbides. The Cr-rich carbides are M7C3 type, whereas, those rich in Nb are NbC. During aging, there is a second precipitation in the matrix of very fine needle form of M23C6 carbides, which leads to an increase in hardness. After that, the decreasing in hardness is associated with a coalescence phenomenon of the secondary precipitates. Computational modeling shows that M23C6 is lesser stable than M7C3 carbide.

Abstract

The hydrolysis of the cis-platin drug on a SiO2(100) hydrated surface was investigated by computational modeling. The cisplatin molecule presents weak interactions with the neighbouring OH groups of the hydrated surface. The cisplatin hydrolysis is not favourable on the SiO2(100) surface. Consequently, the adsorption properties of SiO2(100) are improved considering the surface’s modification with K, Mg, or NH2 functional species. In general, the system is more stable and the molecule-surface distance is reduced when cisplatin is adsorbed on the promoted surfaces.The hydrolysis is a favourable process on the SiO2(100) functionalized surfaces. The cisplatin hydrolysis is most favoured when the surface is functionalized with the NH2 specie. The electron density exchange plays a main role in the adsorption process. cis-[PtCl2(NH3)2] and cis-[PtCl(NH3)2]+ are adsorbed on the functionalized surface via Cl–N and Cl–Si interactions, while the cis-[Pt(NH3)2]2+ complex is adsorbed through Pt–O, Pt–Si, and Pt–Hinteractions. After adsorption, the strength of the N–Si, Si–O, and N–H superficial bonds of the functionalized SiO2(100) changes favouring the interaction between the molecule and their complexes with the surface.
