Abstract

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton emission with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction $^{3}\mathrm{He}(\mathrm{n},\mathrm{p})^{3}\mathrm{H}$, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active $^3\rm{He}$ target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the most poorly understood aspects of electro-weak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory (EFT) calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is $A_{PV} = \left( 1.58 \pm 0.97 ~\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.24~\mathrm{(sys)}\right)\times10^{-8}$, which has the smallest uncertainty of any parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Abstract

Significant progress has been made to experimentally determine a complete set of the parity-violating (PV) weak-interaction amplitudes between nucleons. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the n$^3$He experiment that was used to measure the PV asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{PV}}$ in the direction of proton emission in the reaction $\vec{\mathrm{n}} + {^3}\mathrm{He} \rightarrow {^3}\mathrm{H} + \mathrm{p}$, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized gaseous $^3\mathrm{He}$ target. This asymmetry has was recently calculated \cite{Viviani,Viviani2}, both in the traditional style meson exchange picture, and in effective field theory (EFT), including two-pion exchange. The high precision result (published separately) obtained with the experiment described herein forms an important benchmark for hadronic PV (HPV) theory in few-body systems, where precise calculations are possible. To this day, HPV is still one of the most poorly understood aspects of the electro-weak theory. The calculations estimate the size of the asymmetry to be in the range of $(-9.4 \rightarrow 3.5)\times 10^{-8}$, depending on the framework or model. The small size of the asymmetry and the small overall goal uncertainty of the experiment of $\delta A_{\mathrm{PV}} \simeq 1\times10^{-8}$ places strict requirements on the experiment, especially on the design of the target-detector chamber. In this paper we describe the experimental setup and the measurement methodology as well as the detailed design of the chamber, including results of Garfield++ and Geant4 simulations that form the basis of the chamber design and analysis. We also show data from commissioning and production and define the systematic errors that the chamber contributes to the measured $A_{\mathrm{PV}}$. We give the final uncertainty on the measurement.

Abstract

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near $T_C$, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises., Comment: 476 authors, 237 pages, lists of figures and tables, 219 references

Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents a concept for a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This upgrade, referred to as sPHENIX, brings exciting new capability to the RHIC program by opening new and important channels for experimental investigation and utilizing fully the luminosity of the recently upgraded RHIC facility. sPHENIX enables a compelling jet physics program that will address fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The upgrade concept addresses specific questions whose answers are necessary to advance our understanding of the quark-gluon plasma: (1) How to reconcile the observed strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with the asymptotically free theory of quarks and gluons? (2) What are the dynamical changes to the quark-gluon plasma in terms of quasiparticles and excitations as a function of temperature? (3) How sharp is the transition of the quark-gluon plasma from the most strongly coupled regime near Tc to a weakly coupled system of partons known to emerge at asymptotically high temperatures? In three Appendices, we detail the additional physics capabilities gained through further upgrades: (A) two midrapidity detector additions, (B) a forward rapidity upgrade, and (C) an evolution to an ePHENIX detector suitable for a future Electron Ion Collider at RHIC., Comment: 427 authors, 63 institutions, 159 pages. v2 has correction only to the author list. 39. Quantifying trophic interactions and niche sizes of juvenile fishes in an invaded riverine cyprinid fish community

Abstract

Quantifying feeding interactions between nonindigenous and indigenous fishes in invaded fish communities is important for determining how introduced species integrate into native food webs. Here, the trophic interactions of invasive 0+ European barbel Barbus barbus (L.) and the three other principal 0+ fishes in the community, Squalius cephalus (L.), Leuciscus leuciscus (L.) and Phoxinus phoxinus (L.), were investigated in the River Teme, a River Severn tributary in Western England. B. barbus has been present in the River Teme for approximately 40 years. Analyses of stomach contents from samples collected from three sites between June and September 2015 revealed that, overall, fishes displayed a generalist feeding strategy, with most prey having low frequency of selection. Relationships of diet composition versus body length and gape height were species-specific, with increasing dietary specialisms apparent as the 0+ fishes increased in length and gape height. The trophic niche size of invasive B. barbus was always significantly smaller than S. cephalus and L. leuciscus and was significantly smaller than P. phoxinus at two sites. This was primarily due to differences in the functional morphology of the fishes; 0+ B. barbus were generally restricted to foraging on the benthos, whereas the other fishes were able to forage on prey present throughout the water column. Nevertheless, the invasive B. barbus were exploiting very similar prey items to populations in their native range, suggesting these invaders were strongly pre-adapted to the River Teme and this arguably facilitated their establishment and invasion.

41. Trophic consequences for riverine cyprinid fishes of angler subsidies based on marine-derived nutrients

Abstract

The crossing of freshwater ecosystem boundaries by marine-derived nutrients (MDN) is usually associated with migratory salmonid fishes returning to natal rivers. An alternative source of MDN in fresh waters is the widespread use of pelletised marine fishmeal (“pellets”) by freshwater anglers as they target large-bodied cyprinid fishes, such as European barbel Barbus barbus. Here, the trophic consequences of MDN from pellets for riverine cyprinid fishes were tested. Approaches used stable isotope analyses in controlled and wild scenarios, using B. barbus and chub Squalius cephalus as model species. The isotopic niche, measured as standard ellipse area, was used to assess trophic niche size, and mixing models predicted the extent to which MDN contributed to fish diet. In experimental mesocosms, B. barbus fed low volumes of pellets (c. 3 per fish) for 130 days had isotopic niche sizes that were up to four times larger than a control and “medium” (6 per fish) and “high” pellet (12 per fish) treatments. Somatic growth rates were significantly higher in the “medium” and “high” treatments. In pond enclosure experiments, when juvenile B. barbus and S. cephalus were fed pellets daily for 100 days, there was a substantial and significant shift in the position of their isotopic niche compared to controls with no pellets fed. However, for each species, there were no significant differences in their somatic growth rates in the presence/absence of pellets. In a lowland river, high proportions of MDN contributed to the diet of B. barbus and S. cephalus captured by angling, but with substantial individual variability in those captured by electric fishing. Across all B. barbus >400 mm, MDN dietary contributions ranged between 9% and 71%. This suggested some individual diet specialisations within their population that was associated with feeding on this angler subsidy and that also resulted in a significant increase in the size of their population isotopic niche. Abstract

RATIONALE: Genomic loci are associated with forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) or the ratio of FEV1 to forced vital capacity (FVC) in population samples, but their association with COPD has not yet been proven, nor have their combined effects on lung function and COPD been studied. OBJECTIVES: To test association with COPD of variants at five loci (TNS1, GSTCD, HTR4, AGER and THSD4) and evaluate joint effects on lung function and COPD of these SNPs, and variants at the previously reported locus near HHIP. METHODS: Sampling from 12 population-based studies (n=31,422), we obtained genotype data on 3,284 COPD cases and 17,538 controls for sentinel SNPs in TNS1, GSTCD, HTR4, AGER and THSD4. In 24,648 individuals (including 2,890 COPD cases and 13,862 controls), we additionally obtained genotypes for rs12504628 near HHIP. Each allele associated with lung function decline at these six SNPs contributed to a risk score. We studied the association of the risk score to lung function and COPD. RESULTS: Association with COPD was significant for three loci (TNS1, GSTCD, HTR4) and the previously reported HHIP locus, and suggestive and directionally consistent for AGER and TSHD4. Compared with the baseline group (7 risk alleles), carrying 10-12 risk alleles was associated with a reduction in FEV1 (β=-72.21 ml, P=3.90x10-4) and FEV1/FVC (β=-1.53%, P=6.35x10-6), and with COPD (OR=1.63, P=1.46x10-5). CONCLUSIONS: Variants in TNS1, GSTCD and HTR4 are associated with COPD. Our highest risk score category was associated with 1.6-fold higher COPD risk than the population average score.

Abstract

Transverse momentum (\(p_{\rm T}\)) spectra measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au + Au, d + Au and pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}\) and in Au + Au collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 62.4 \mathrm{GeV}\) are presented. A suppression of the yield of high \(p_{\rm T}\) hadrons in central Au + Au collisions by a factor 4-5 at \( p_{{\text{T}}} > 5 \) is found relative to the pp reference scaled by the nuclear overlap function \(\langle T_\mathrm{AB} \rangle\). In contrast, direct photons are not suppressed in central Au + Au collisions and no suppression of high \(p_{\rm T}\) particles can be seen in d + Au collisions. This leads to the conclusion that the dense medium formed in central Au + Au collisions is responsible for the suppression.

Abstract

Results from the PHENIX experiment of measurements of high- $p_{\rm T}$ particle production presented at the Hard Probes 2004 Conference are summarized. This paper focuses on a sub-set of the measurements presented at the conference, namely the suppression of $\pi^0$ production at moderate to high $p_{\rm T}$ as a function of angle with respect to the collision reaction plane, $\Delta\phi$ , for different collision centralities. The data are presented in the form of nuclear modification factor as a function of angle with respect to the reaction plane, $R_{AA} (\Delta \phi)$ . The data are analyzed using empirical estimates of the medium-induced energy loss obtained from the $R_{AA} (\Delta \phi)$ values. A geometric analysis is performed with the goal of understanding the simultaneous dependence of R AA on $\Delta\phi$ and centrality. We find that the centrality and $\Delta\phi$ dependence of the $\pi^0$ suppression can be made approximately consistent using an admittedly over-simplistic description of the geometry of the jet propagation in the medium but only if the energy loss is effectively reduced for short parton path lengths in the medium. We find that with a more "canonical" treatment of the quenching geometry, the $\pi^0$ suppression varies more rapidly with $\Delta\phi$ than would be expected from the centrality dependence of the suppression.

Abstract

EI; International audience; The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has observed a large enhancement of baryon and anti-baryon production at ~ 2-5 GeV/c, compared to expectations from jet fragmentation. While a number of theoretical interpretations of the data are available, there is not yet a definitive answer to the “baryon puzzle”. We investigate the centrality dependence of -meson production at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions with $sqrt {^{s}NN}=200 GeV$. Comparison with the proton and anti-proton spectra reveal similar shapes, as expected for soft production described by hydrodynamics. However, the absolute yields show a different centrality dependence. The nuclear modification factors for $\phi$ are similar to those of pions, rather than (anti)protons that have similar mass. At intermediate , baryon/meson effects seem to be more important than the mass effects, in support of recombination models.

Abstract

O. Drapier on behalf of the PHENIX Collaboration, EI; The PHENIX experiment at RHIC measured single electron spectra in p + p, d + Au and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV, and in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4$ GeV. In these spectra, electrons from semi-leptonic decays of charmed particles are the dominant contribution after subtraction of all 'photonic' sources (photon conversions, Dalitz decays, decays of light vector mesons). The p + p open charm production cross-section is found to be in good agreement with pQCD NLO calculations. The shape of the distributions obtained for p + p interactions is compared with those observed for nucleus-nucleus collisions. From p + p to d + Au and Au + Au interactions, open charm production is found to scale with the number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$ . Au + Au data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62.4$ GeV is compatible with the ISR p + p results scaled by $N_{\rm coll}$ . The elliptic flow parameter v2 of heavy flavor electrons has also been measured, and is found to be non-zero in the intermediate pT range.
