Lima bean is an important crop in Northeastern Brazil and a source of food and income for farmers in the region. However, there have been few genetic studies on this species, which limits the knowledge available for use in breeding programs. The objective of this study was to estimate the relationship between cycle and production traits using canonical correlation analysis and to identify traits that can be used for the indirect selection of lima bean. The experiment was conducted at the Department of Plant Science of the Universidade Federal do Piauí, Teresina, in a randomized block design with five replications, in which 11 agronomic traits from six lima bean populations in the F3 generation originating from biparental crosses were evaluated in 2019. The data were subjected to canonical correlation analysis using the virtual environment R. The results showed that only the first coefficient of the canonical pair was significant (r = 0.5531) by the quisquare test, suggesting that the studied groups were not independent, as the cycle traits showed coefficients of large magnitudes in the relationship between groups. The canonical correlation results suggested that there is a linear association between cycle and production traits in lima beans, in which days to flowering, days to maturation, pod length, seed width, and seed thickness contribute the most to the association between groups. On-farm conservation characterized by cultivation by smallholder farmers in agricultural and quilombola (formed by descendants of Afro-Brazilian slaves) communities is a tool for the maintenance of seeds and genetic diversity. Smallholder farmers who grow local varieties in diversity centers and communities contribute to supporting the capacity of agricultural and food systems to adapt to adverse conditions. Widely cultivated in the Northeast region of Brazil, lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L), despite having relative economic and social importance, is little exploited in terms of conservation aspects. Based on a process of participatory interview, this article documents the knowledge of smallholder farmers associated with local varieties of this species, as well as the practices and strategies used for on-farm conservation in three producing areas of northeastern Brazil. The results revealed that farmers have a low level of education; the main factor for the loss of traditional knowledge is the disinterest of younger people in agriculture. The study highlights the importance of integrating scientific knowledge with traditional knowledge to develop sustainable agroecosystems, in which on-farm conservation is an alternative to diversify agriculture, but which requires government and private support to stimulate and enhance agricultural activities and the interaction among smallholder farmers. The aim of this study was to compare the Multiple Linear Regression and Artificial Neural Network models in prediction of grain yield of ten landrace varieties of lima bean and evaluate adaptability and stability through the Lin and Binns method for identification of the best performing variety. Trials were conducted in the municipalities of Teresina, PI, and São Domingos do Maranhão, MA, through measurement of 12 traits, except for grain yield in São Domingos do Maranhão. The parameters of Pearson and Spearman correlation, root mean square error, mean absolute error, and coefficient of determination were used to compare the models. The Artificial Neural Network proved to be more adequate for prediction of grain yield. Adaptability and stability analyses indicated that the environments are discriminant for selection of promising genotypes, and that the landrace variety Mulatinha can be recommended for planting in the municipalities. This research aimed to morphologically characterize and estimate the genetic diversity of 21 Capsicum accessions belonging to the Capsicum Germplasm Active Bank at the Universidade Federal do Piauí (BAGC–UFPI) using uni- and multivariate analysis. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, by completely randomized experimental design with four repetitions, with one plant per plot. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the comparison of means for seven quantitative variables were performed, followed by clustering the averages by the Scott-Knott test (P < 0.05). The analysis of the seven quantitative and thirteen qualitative descriptors was estimated based on the Gower distance. Later, it was performed the principal component analysis and the UPGMA hierarchical cluster method. Results characterized and identified a wide intra- and interspecific genetic variability related to the fruit size, colors, and shapes among the Brazilian Capsicum genotypes belonging to the BAGC–UFPI. The descriptors used in this research were effective in the discrimination of the pepper accessions, especially the closely related C. frutescens and C. chinense species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
