Aim/purpose – In this paper, we explore the contribution of Human Resource Management Systems (HRMS) to innovation in SMEs. We consider two HRMS with different orientations: Commitment HRMS (focusing on long-term career development to increase employees’ creativity) and Collaboration HRMS (focusing on the use of external human capital to achieve innovation). We believe that SMEs’ radical and incremental innovation follow different paths from a configurational perspective. We want to understand how the two HRMS influence radical and incremental innovation, consequently, we explore the contributions of Commitment HRMS and Collaboration HRMS.

The reduction of resinous species in Portuguese forest areas has caused constraints to wood industry supplies. Portugal represents the extreme southwest of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) natural distribution and large gaps exist in the knowledge of its wood-quality characteristics. Understanding the relationship between these traits is important for recognizing which combination of wood properties is the most suitable for specific uses. To address these questions, we assessed wood-quality traits, namely, wood-density components (microdensitometric analysis), chemical composition (NIR spectrometry) and mechanical properties (bending tests) of wood samples collected at five representative forest sites in Portugal. Our results showed that Portuguese Pinus sylvestris has good radial growth and denser wood, higher extractive content and higher stiffness and strength than northern European provenances. The lignin content was within the range attributed to softwoods. Among the Portuguese stands, trees growing at lower-altitude sites exhibited denser wood and higher mechanical properties, while trees from high-elevations showed higher amounts of lignin. Ring density was more strongly correlated with earlywood than latewood density. A negative, non-significant correlation was found between ring density and width, supporting the assumption that the higher radial growth (ring width) does not negatively affect wood quality (density). In general, chemical properties had a weak relationship with physical and mechanical properties (MOE and MOR). Both mechanical traits were positively correlated with density and growth components, supporting the assumption that trees with high radial growth do not exhibit poorer mechanical performances.

The precise nature of the reaction between lanthanum nitrate and sodium molybdate at specific pH levels 7.6, 5.5 and 4.1 has been studied by means of electrometric techniques involving potentiometric and conductometric titrations, in aqueous and alcoholic media using each reagent as titrant. Well-defined breaks and inflections in the titration curves provide cogent evidence for formation and precipitation of lanthanum normal-La2O3.3MoO3, para- La2O3.7MoO3 and octa-2 La2O3.24MoO3 molybdates in the vicinity of pH 5.9, 4.8 and 4.2, respectively. Analytical investigations of the precipitates of lanthanum molybdates have also been carried out, which substantiate the results of the electrometric study.

Relatamos um caso de mielopatia transversa aguda em paciente masculino de 31 anos de idade, branco, portador de leucemia aguda linfoblástica, subtipo L3 (LLA-L3). Esta é uma forma grave de leucemia e compromete mais crianças em relação aos adultos. Menos de 1% dos pacientes leucêmicos apresentam complicações espinais. No paciente em estudo, a sintomatologia instalou-se de modo abrupto e com as seguintes características: dores nas costas, paraplegia crural flácida e perda das funções sensitivas e vegetativas abaixo do segmento afetado. O diagnóstico etiológico foi estabelecido após a realização dos seguintes exames: hemograma, mielograma, análise do líquido cefalorraqueano e ressonância magnética de coluna dorsal. Foi instituído tratamento específico, que não interferiu com a evolução fatal da doença.

Os autores apresentam uma série de 15 pacientes submetidos a cirurgia cardíaca cuja proteção miocárdica foi obtida por infusão de solução cardioplégica sangüínea isotérmica por via retrógrada atrial. As operações consistiram em 11 revascularizações do miocárdio e 4 cirurgias orovalvares. Após instalação da circulação extracorpórea, iniciou-se a infusão da solução cardioplégica de indução na porção inicial da aorta, exceto nos casos de insuficiência aórtica. A solução de indução foi infundida por cinco minutos, passando-se, então, à solução de manutenção. No início da infusão da solução de manutenção, através de cateter de 4,0 mm no átrio direito, as veias cavas e o tronco pulmonar foram pinçados e passou-se a aspirar a aorta. Todos os pacientes saíram de circulação extracorpórea sem qualquer dificuldade ou suporte inotrópico. Não houve registro de infarto agudo do miocárdio. Dois pacientes com fibrilação atrial apresentaram ritmo sinusal já no centro cirúrgico.

O "California Mastitis Test" (CMT) estima o conteúdo de células somáticas no leite e é interpretado subjetivamente, estabelecendo-se escores que, na maioria dos casos, variam de 1 a 5. O escore 1 indica uma reação completamente negativa e os de 2-5 indicam graus crescentes de resposta inflamatória do úbere, sendo normalmente considerados como indicativos de mastite subclínica. Dependendo da interpretação dos escores, o CMT pode produzir resultados falso-positivos ou falso-negativos. Esse trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a sensibilidade e a especificidade do CMT em relação à contagem de células somáticas (CCS). Foram utilizadas 3.012 amostras de leite provenientes de 760 vacas Holandesas ou mestiças Holandês-Zebu, pertencentes a 15 rebanhos. Todas as amostras foram submetidas ao CMT e processadas para CCS em equipamento Fossomatic 90. Os valores médios de CCS (x 1.000 células/ml) obtidos para os escores de CMT foram 1 (79,9), 2 (333,5), 3 (670,3), 4 (1.354,0) e 5 (4.455,6). Três opções de interpretação (doente/não-doente) para o CMT foram testadas, em relação aos valores de CCS, iniciando com 100.000 células/ml: (a) 1 versus 2, 3, 4, e 5; (b) 1 e 2 versus 3, 4 e 5; (c) 1, 2, 3 versus 4 e 5. As sensibilidades do CMT em identificar corretamente quartos mamários acima de 200.000 células/ml foram 79%, 61% e 34%, para as opções a, b e c, respectivamente. Para identificar corretamente contagens acima de 500.000 células/ml, as sensibilidades do CMT, para as opções a, b e c, foram, respectivamente: 93%, 82% e 54%. A sensibilidade do CMT em identificar quartos mamários com mastite subclínica foi adequada (acima de 80%) quando a interpretação do teste foi mais rigorosa (opções a e b). A interpretação da reação 3 como negativa (opção c) só alcançou sensibilidade de 80% para contagens entre 1.200.000 e 1.400.000 células/ml. As especificidades do CMT, para CCS de 200.000 e 500.000 foram, respectivamente, 90% e 80% (opção a), 97% e 90% (opção b) e 99% e 97% (opção c).

Abstract Background The evolutionary history of the biota of North Africa and Arabia is inextricably tied to the complex geological and climatic evolution that gave rise to the prevalent deserts of these areas. Reptiles constitute an exemplary group in the study of the arid environments with numerous well-adapted members, while recent studies using reptiles as models have unveiled interesting biogeographical and diversification patterns. In this study, we include 207 specimens belonging to all 12 recognized species of the genus Stenodactylus. Molecular phylogenies inferred using two mitochondrial (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA) and two nuclear (c-mos and RAG-2) markers are employed to obtain a robust time-calibrated phylogeny, as the base to investigate the inter- and intraspecific relationships and to elucidate the biogeographical history of Stenodactylus, a genus with a large distribution range including the arid and hyper-arid areas of North Africa and Arabia. Results The phylogenetic analyses of molecular data reveal the existence of three major clades within the genus Stenodactylus, which is supported by previous studies based on morphology. Estimated divergence times between clades and sub-clades are shown to correlate with major geological events of the region, the most important of which is the opening of the Red Sea, while climatic instability in the Miocene is hypothesized to have triggered diversification. High genetic variability is observed in some species, suggesting the existence of some undescribed species. The S. petrii - S. stenurus species complex is in need of a thorough taxonomic revision. New data is presented on the distribution of the sister species S. sthenodactylus and S. mauritanicus. Conclusions The phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus Stenodactylus presented in this work permits the reconstruction of the biogeographical history of these common desert dwellers and confirms the importance of the opening of the Red Sea and the climatic oscillations of the Miocene as major factors in the diversification of the biota of North Africa and Arabia. Moreover, this study traces the evolution of this widely distributed and highly specialized group, investigates the patterns of its high intraspecific diversity and elucidates its systematics.

The application of biochar in soil provides various benefits that can vary in intensity as the pyrolysis temperature increases. However, its low density makes this material easily transportable and prone to being removed from the system. The objective of this study was to investigate the pyrolysis temperatures and compression pressure of densified biochar carrier capsules on the physiological quality of Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum seeds. Produced at three final pyrolysis temperatures (300, 600, and 900 °C), the biochar was characterized through bulk and true density analyses, immediate composition, pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, water-soluble carbon, characterization of organic structures by FTIR, and PAH analysis. Subsequently, the biochar was compacted by briquetting at two compression pressures (50 and 200 psi) with one seed per capsule, and germination, emergence, and quality of generated seedlings were evaluated. After verifying residue normality and variance homogeneity, analysis of variance was conducted following a completely randomized design in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, with four replications per treatment and two additional control treatments. Upon identifying significant differences, regression model adjustments were performed. Cluster-based multivariate analysis was used to identify similarities among the studied treatments, both for capsules and controls. Pyrolysis temperature and compression pressure influenced seed germination, emergence, and initial seedling growth. Lower pressure favored shoot development, while higher pressure favored root development and generated seedlings of higher quality. The interest of biofuel producers in Neotropical species that have high growth rates, slight wood density variability, and elemental composition that does not compromise the environment has increased in recent decades. We investigated the density and chemical characteristics of wood of Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber × Ducke) Barneby as a source for the generation of bioenergy. Apparent radial wood density profiles (X-ray densitometry (XRD)) and the elemental distribution (X-ray fluorescence (XRF)) of Cl, S, K, and Ca in the wood of nine S. parahyba var. amazonicum trees, divided into three diameter classes (I = 15.5, II = 19.5, and III = 23.5 cm) were analyzed. The high heating value (HHV) of the wood samples was determined, and the energy density was estimated by the product of the HHV and the apparent density. Trees that grew better (classes II and III) produced wood with higher density. These trees showed higher concentrations of K and S, and lower concentrations of Ca and Cl. The highest Cl concentrations were observed in classes with smaller diameters. The chlorine levels met the standards for use of this wood as fuel, but the sulfur levels were higher than the threshold recommended by the ISO 17225-3:2021 guidelines, which can limit the use of the species for certain energy uses. The wood of S. parahyba var. amazonicum had interesting characteristics for the production of bioenergy due to its low density, so it can be used in the production of solid biofuels such as pellets and briquettes. Monitoring chlorine and sulfur is important, since during the combustion of biomass they are released into the atmosphere and can negatively contribute to the effects of climate change., (© 2023. Tannins are polyphenols that can be extracted from different parts of the plant and have different known commercial applications. The extraction of tannins generates a significant amount of low-density wastes. An alternative that can be applied to ensure energy reuse of this low-density waste is a densification process, such as briquetting. Thus, this research work aimed to assess the energy potential of the residue from the extraction of tannins of different forest species, aiming at its energy reuse in the form of briquettes. Stem barks of 6 forest species (Acacia mangium, AM; Anacardium occidentale, AO; Anadenanthera colubrina, AC; Azadirachta indica, AI; Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia, MC; Mimosa tenuiflora, MT) were used after tannin extraction. Bulk density, energy (higher, lower, and net heating value) and thermal (TG/DTG) properties, and chemical constitution (extractives, lignin, and holocellulose) of the materials were determined. In addition, briquette compaction ratio, apparent density, volumetric expansion, and water adsorption over the days were evaluated. The highest bulk densities were found in the barks of Anadenanthera colubrina (0.529 g.cm -3 ) and Mimosa tenuiflora (0.407 g.cm -3 ), whereas the species that showed the best result of higher heating value was Acacia mangium (20.44 MJ.kg -1 ), followed by Azadirachta indica (19.39 MJ.kg -1 ) and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (18.85 MJ.kg -1 ). Briquetting increased the density of the evaluated material by 2.3 to 4.9 times. All briquettes produced with wastes from tannin extraction evaluated in this work showed potential for energy production. With more information on the quantification of waste generated and data on the economic viability of production, these tannin-producing industries can benefit both environmentally and economically, by reusing these wastes for energy production., (© 2022. Objectives: to build and validate an educational booklet to promote the involvement of parents in labor and birth., Methods: methodological study developed in five stages: situational diagnosis; bibliographic survey; construction of illustrations, layout, design and texts; content and appearance validation by judges (25 experts) and calculation of the Flesch Readability Index; and validation with the target audience (12 parents). A minimum Content Validity Index of 0.80 was considered., Results: the booklet was entitled "Father Presence" and was developed in 11 topics. In Content and Appearance Validation, the Validity Index obtained an overall score of 0.97. Cronbach's alpha was 0.92, indicating excellent reliability of its content. A global score of 74% for readability was obtained, considered easy to understand., Conclusions: the material was successful in the validation process, and it can be recommended for parents to use it during the prenatal period, promoting the inclusion of the partner and preparing them for labor and birth.

Objective: To compare the effects of obesity on sleep quality, the anthropometric and autonomic parameters of adolescents., Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with adolescents aged 11 to 18, analyzing parameters such as BMI, sleep quality records, waist circumference, fat percentage, blood pressure and sexual maturation, in addition to autonomic cardiac function through the analysis of heart rate variability., Results: The anthropometric parameters of waist circumference, percentage fat mass, were significantly higher in the group of obese adolescents. Sympathetic modulation in LF% was significantly higher in obesity. Parasympathetic modulation in HF% was significantly lower in obese than in eutrophic., Conclusion: Obese adolescents do not have poor sleep quality; there is no distinction between boys and girls regarding the analyzed variables; however, obesity alone was responsible for negatively influencing anthropometric parameters, as well as impairing the autonomic cardiac modulation.

The purpose of this study was to compare the association between anti and pro-oxidant activity, nitrite concentration, and blood pressure (BP) in middle-aged and older women with different levels of estimated training status (TS). The sample consisted of 155 females (50-84 years) who were submitted to a physical examination to evaluate estimated TS through the "Functional Fitness Battery Test," BP measurements, and plasma blood samples to evaluate pro-oxidant and antioxidant activity and nitrite concentrations. Participants were separated by age into a middle-aged group (<65 years) and an older (≥65 years) group and then subdivided in each group according to TS. Blood biochemistry was similar between groups. On the other hand, protein oxidation was lower in participants with higher TS, independent of age. Older females with higher TS presented higher nitrite concentrations, lower lipoperoxidation, and lower values of BP compared with those with lower TS. Lower GPx activity was observed in participants with higher TS compared with middle-aged with lower TS. Thus, our results suggest that good levels of TS may be associated with lower oxidative stress and higher nitrite concentration and may contribute to maintain normal or reduced blood pressure values.

Background: Heart failure represents an important public health issue due to its high costs and growing incidence worldwide. Evidence showing the regenerative potential of postmitotic heart tissue has suggested the existence of endogenous cardiac stem cells in adult hearts. Cardiosphere-derived cells (CDC) constitute a candidate pool of such cardiac stem cells. Previous studies using acute myocardial infarction (MI) models in rodents demonstrated an improvement in cardiac function after cell therapy with CDC. We evaluated the therapeutic potential of CDC 60 days after MI in a rat model., Methods: CDC were obtained from human discarded myocardial tissue and rat hearts by enzymatic digestion with collagenase II. At 10-15 days after isolation, small, round, phase-bright cells (PBCs) appeared on top of the adherent fibroblast-like cells. The PBCs were collected and placed on a nonadherent plate for 2 days, where they formed cardiospheres which were then transferred to adherent plates, giving rise to CDC. These CDC were characterized by flow cytometry. Wistar rats were submitted to MI through permanent occlusion of the anterior descending coronary artery. After 60 days, they were immunosuppressed with cyclosporine A during 10 days. On the third day, infarcted animals were treated with 5 × 10 5 human CDC (hCDC) or placebo through intramyocardial injection guided by echocardiogram. Another group of animals was treated with rat CDC (rCDC) without immunosuppression. hCDC and rCDC were stably transduced with a viral construct expressing luciferase under control of a constitutive promoter. CDC were then used in a bioluminescence assay. Functional parameters were evaluated by echocardiogram 90 and 120 days after MI and by Langendorff at 120 days., Results: CDC had a predominantly mesenchymal phenotype. Cell tracking by bioluminescence demonstrated over 85% decrease in signal at 5-7 days after cell therapy. Cardiac function evaluation by echocardiography showed no differences in ejection fraction, end-diastolic volume, or end-systolic volume between groups receiving human cells, rat cells, or placebo. Hemodynamic analyses and infarct area quantification confirmed that there was no improvement in cardiac remodeling after cell therapy with CDC., Conclusion: Our study challenges the effectiveness of CDC in post-ischemic heart failure.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of resistance exercise training on hemodynamics and cardiac autonomic control in ovariectomized spontaneously hypertensive rats. Female rats were divided into 4 groups: sedentary control (SC), sedentary hypertensive (SH), sedentary hypertensive ovariectomized (SHO), and resistance-trained hypertensive ovariectomized (RTHO). Resistance exercise training was performed on a vertical ladder (5 days/week, 8 weeks) at 40-60% maximal load. Direct arterial pressure was recorded. Vagal and sympathetic tones were measured by heart rate (HR) responses to methylatropine (3 mg/kg, iv) and propranolol (4 mg/kg, iv). Ovariectomy resulted in additional increases in blood pressure in hypertensive rats and was associated with decreased vagal tone. Resistance exercise trained rats had lower mean arterial pressure than untrained rats (RTHO: 159±2.2 vs SHO: 177±3.4 mmHg), as well as resting bradycardia (RTHO: 332±9.0 vs SHO: 356±5 bpm). Sympathetic tone was also lower in the trained group. Moreover, sympathetic tone was positively correlated with resting HR (r=0.7, P<0.05). The additional arterial pressure increase in hypertensive rats caused by ovarian hormone deprivation was attenuated by moderate-intensity dynamic resistance training. This benefit may be associated with resting bradycardia and reduced cardiac sympathetic tone after training, which suggests potential benefits of resistance exercise for the management of hypertension after ovarian hormone deprivation.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of single-point laser Doppler perfusion monitoring (LDPM) in the assessment of microvascular reactivity in the skin during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)., Design: Cross-sectional observational study., Setting: Government-affiliated teaching hospital., Participants: Twenty male patients aged 60 ± 2 years who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting under CPB., Interventions: The authors assessed the endothelium-dependent vasodilation of the skin microcirculation at the forehead and forearm using LDPM coupled with thermal hyperemia. This measurement was performed before and after the induction of anesthesia, during and after CPB, and 24 h after the end of the surgical procedure., Results: The basal values of microvascular flow before the induction of anesthesia were significantly higher in the skin of the forehead compared with that of the forearm. There were no significant alterations in microvascular reactivity throughout the recording periods for both recording sites, as assessed by the vasodilation range expressed as cutaneous vascular conductance (arbitrary perfusion units/mean arterial pressure)., Conclusions: Using LDPM, the authors showed that the microcirculatory bed of the skin of the forehead, which is readily accessible during cardiac surgery, is a suitable model for the study of microvascular reactivity and tissue perfusion in cardiovascular surgical procedures using CPB. This technique could, thus, be suitable for evaluating the effects of drugs or technical procedures on tissue perfusion during cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. This study tested the hypothesis that simvastatin treatment can improve cardiovascular and autonomic functions and membrane lipoperoxidation, with an increased effect when applied to physically trained ovariectomized rats. Ovariectomized rats were divided into sedentary, sedentary+simvastatin and trained+simvastatin groups (n = 8 each). Exercise training was performed on a treadmill for 8 weeks and simvastatin (5 mg/kg) was administered in the last 2 weeks. Blood pressure (BP) was recorded in conscious animals. Baroreflex sensitivity was evaluated by the tachycardic and bradycardic responses to BP changes. Cardiac vagal and sympathetic effects were determined using methylatropine and propranolol. Oxidative stress was evaluated based on heart and liver lipoperoxidation using the chemiluminescence method. The simvastatin-treated groups presented reduced body weight and mean BP (trained+simvastatin = 99 ± 2 and sedentary+simvastatin = 107 ± 2 mmHg) compared to the sedentary group (122 ± 1 mmHg). Furthermore, the trained group showed lower BP and heart rate compared to the other groups. Tachycardic and bradycardic responses were enhanced in both simvastatin-treated groups. The vagal effect was increased in the trained+simvastatin group and the sympathetic effect was decreased in the sedentary+simvastatin group. Hepatic lipoperoxidation was reduced in sedentary+simvastatin (≈21%) and trained+simvastatin groups (≈57%) compared to the sedentary group. Correlation analysis involving all animals demonstrated that cardiac lipoperoxidation was negatively related to the vagal effect (r = -0.7) and positively correlated to the sympathetic effect (r = 0.7). In conclusion, improvement in cardiovascular and autonomic functions associated with a reduction of lipoperoxidation with simvastatin treatment was increased in trained ovariectomized rats.

Objective: To analyze the results of isolated on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) in patients >70 years-old in comparison to patients <70 years-old., Methods: Patients undergoing isolated CABG were selected for the study. The patients were grouped in G1 (age > 70 years-old) and G2 (age <70 years-old). The endpoints were in-hospital mortality, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke, reexploration for bleeding, intra-aortic balloon for circulatory shock, respiratory complications, acute renal failure, mediastinitis, sepsis, atrial fibrillation, and complete atrioventricular block (CAVB)., Results: 1,033 patients were included, 257 (24.8%) in G1 and 776 (75.2%) in G2. Patients in G1 were more likely to have in-hospital mortality than G2 (8.9% vs. 3.6%, respectively; P=0.001), while the incidence of AMI was similar (5.8% vs. 5.5%; P=0.87) than G2. More patients in G1 had re-exploration for bleeding (12.1% vs. 6.1%; P=0.003). G1 had more incidence of respiratory complications (21.4% vs. 9.1%; P<0.001), mediastinitis (5.1% vs. 1.9%; P=0.013), stroke (3.9% vs. 1.3%; P=0.016), acute renal failure (7.8% vs. 1.3%; P<0.001), sepsis (3.9% vs. 1.9%;P=0.003), atrial fibrillation (15.6% vs. 9.8%; P=0.016), and CAVB (3.5% vs. 1.2%; P=0.023) than G2. There was no significant difference in the use of intra-aortic balloon. In the forward stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis age > 70-year-old was an independent predictive factor for higher in-hospital mortality (P=0.004), reexploration for bleeding (P=0.002), sepsis (P=0.002), respiratory complications (P<0.001), mediastinitis (P=0.016), stroke (P=0.029), acute renal failure (P<0.001), atrial fibrillation (P=0.021) and CAVB (P=0.031)., Conclusion: This study suggests that patients > 70 years-old were at increased risk of death and other complications in the CABG's postoperative period in comparison to younger patients.

Torrefaction is a mild pyrolysis process (usually up to 300 degrees C) that changes the chemical and physical properties of biomass. This process is a possible pre-treatment prior to further processes (transport, grinding, combustion, gasification, etc) to generate energy or biofuels. In this study, three eucalyptus wood species and bark were subjected to different torrefaction conditions to determine the alterations in their structural and energy properties. The most severe treatment (280 degrees C, 5h) causes mass losses of more than 35%, with severe damage to anatomical structure, and an increase of about 27% in the specific energy content. Bark is more sensitive to heat than wood. Energy yields are always higher than mass yields, thereby demonstrating the benefits of torrefaction in concentrating biomass energy. The overall mass loss is proposed as a relevant parameter to synthesize the effect of torrefaction conditions (temperature and duration). Accordingly, all results are summarised by analytical expressions able to predict the energy properties as a function of the overall mass loss. Unlabelled: The Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4) questionnaire was developed by the French Neuropathic Pain Group and is a simple and objective tool, with the ability to distinguish nociceptive from neuropathic pain. The purpose of this work was to validate the DN4 questionnaire in the Portuguese language in order to allow its use in clinical and research settings. A double-blind, accuracy study was conducted, consisting of translation, back-translation, literal evaluation, semantic equivalence, and communication with the target population. The Portuguese version of the questionnaire was applied in a sample of 101 patients with neuropathic (N = 42) or nociceptive pain (N = 59), ranked according to medical diagnosis. The reproducibility, reliability and validity of the instrument were analyzed, and showed a high diagnostic power for this version of the DN4 questionnaire. The Portuguese version of the DN4 questionnaire presented good validity and reliability, allowing it to identify neuropathic pain and neuropathic characteristics of mixed pain syndromes., Perspective: This article presents the first validated neuropathic pain questionnaire in the Portuguese language and represents a useful tool in the assessment of neuropathic pain both in the clinical setting and in population-based studies. This study investigated the influence of heat treatment on the chemical composition of Eucalyptus saligna and Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis woods to understand its role in wood processing. E. saligna and P. caribaea var. hondurensis woods were treated in a laboratorial electric furnace at 120, 140, 160 and 180 degrees C to induce their heat treatment. The chemical composition of the resulting products and those from original wood were determined by gas chromatography. Eucalyptus and Pinus showed a significant reduction in arabinose, manose, galactose and xylose contents when submitted to increasing temperatures. No significant alteration in glucose content was observed. Lignin content, however, increased during the heat process. There was a significant reduction in extractive content for Eucalyptus. On the other hand, a slight increase in extractive content has been determined for the Pinus wood, and that only for the highest temperature. These different behaviors can be explained by differences in chemical constituents between softwoods and hardwoods. The results obtained in this study provide important information for future research and utilization of thermally modified wood.

The objective of the present study was to identify metabolic, cardiovascular and autonomic changes induced by fructose overload administered in the drinking water of rats for 8 weeks. Female Wistar rats (200-220 g) were divided into 2 groups: control (N = 8) and fructose-fed rats (N = 5; 100 mg/L fructose in drinking water for 8 weeks). The autonomic control of heart rate was evaluated by pharmacological blockade using atropine (3 mg/kg) and propranolol (4 mg/kg). The animals were submitted to an intravenous insulin tolerance test (ITT) and to blood glucose measurement. The fructose overload induced a significant increase in body weight (approximately 10%) and in fasting glycemia (approximately 28%). The rate constant of glucose disappearance (KITT) during ITT was lower in fructose-fed rats (3.25 +/- 0.7%/min) compared with controls (4.95 +/- 0.3%/min, P < 0.05) indicating insulin resistance. The fructose-fed group presented increased arterial pressure compared to controls (122 +/- 3 vs 108 +/- 1 mmHg, P < 0.05) and a reduction in vagal tonus (31 +/- 9 vs 55 +/- 5 bpm in controls, P < 0.05). No changes in sympathetic tonus were observed. A positive correlation, tested by the Pearson correlation, was demonstrable between cardiac vagal tonus and KITT (r = 0.8, P = 0.02). These data provided new information regarding the role of parasympathetic dysfunction associated with insulin resistance in the development of early metabolic and cardiovascular alterations induced by a high fructose diet.

We describe a case of a 67 year-old patient with obstructive coronary artery disease that, in the preoperative survey for inguinal herniorraphy surgery, discovered, by a two-dimensional echocardiogram, a tumor in left atrium, mobile, non-obstructive. The patient underwent a cineangiocoronariography showing severe stenosis in the left anterior descending artery, moderate stenosis in the left circumflex artery, near the origin of the first marginal branch, and a non-obstructive plaque in the right coronary artery. There was also moderate left ventricular dysfunction. After that, the patient has gone coronary artery bypass surgery and resection of the left atrial tumor. The histological exam revealed that the tumor was, in fact, a myxoma.

Background: Patients with extensive coronary artery disease (CAD) have better prognosis when treated with coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG), especially when left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) is present. However, there are scanty data about the clinical course of patients not referred to CABG because of extensive and severe atherosclerotic involvement of distal coronary arteries (ENDCAD). The aim of this study was to evaluate patients with multivessel (MV) or left main CAD (LM) who had CABG precluded because of ENDCAD., Methods and Results: Between August 1999 and July 2001, 51 patients who had clinical indication but were not eligible for CABG because of ENDCAD were followed for at least 12 months or until death. There were 32 men and 19 women (age 61+/-9 years). Previous acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was present in 31 (60.8%), diabetes mellitus (DM) in 28 (54.9%), systemic arterial hypertension in 37 (72.5%), LVD (left ventricular ejection fraction <40%) in 26 (51%), 3 vessel CAD in 31 (60.8%), and LM in 4 (7.8%). During follow-up there were 20 cardiac (39.2%) deaths, 19 (37.2%) AMI, and 3 (5.8%) patients developed congestive heart failure. There were 2 (3.9%) noncardiac deaths. Patients with DM (60.7% versus 13%; P=0.001; odds ratio [OR], 10.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.46 to 43.09), LVD (76.9% versus 0%; P<0.0001; OR, 4.33; 95% CI, 2.14 to 8.74), 3-vessel CAD (51.6% versus 20%; P=0.039; OR, 4.26; 95% CI, 1.16 to 15.69), and LM (100% versus 34%; P=0.019; OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.004 to 1.556) were more likely to die. There was no deaths in patients with 2-vessel CAD but they had more nonfatal AMI (43.8% versus 14.3%; OR, 4.667; 95% CI, 1.188 to 18.332)., Conclusions: Patients in whom CABG could not be performed because of ENDCAD had high mortality, especially in the presence of LVD. DM (particularly insulin-dependent), LM CAD, and 3-vessel CAD were independent markers of increased risk.
